Thank you for showing how to cut the scraps and construct the quilt. I made one with over 1000 pieces. I love it and it used up a lot of scraps that I wanted to put to good use. Everyone who sees the quilt likes the scrappy look.
hi, I'm France Thibodeau, I'm 14 years old, My mom does a lot of sewing since shes young and so am I and Your videos inspire me to continue my hard work , Keep up the good work
I just found a shop in my area that sells donated fabrics. They sell scraps $1 per bag. You fill the bag! So glad to come across this video. Next time I’ll pick up a couple of bags of scraps and try this design.
This is the best scrap quilt “pattern” I have seen‼️ Your tutorials are fantastic and i feel you’ve become my quilting mentor 😊 I made a mistake and cut my scraps 2x4” and then was relieved that all I have to do is trim them down. Thank you so much Laura! You’re the Best! Cathy
I just found your channel, i just wanted to tell you I have taught my son how to sew, he always watched me sew at a young age. I had five children and three girls. I sewed a lot of shorts and t-shirts. I also taught sewing for a while. It turned out fine because my son showed his wife how to sew. So if they want to sew , let them.
Fell in love with this quilt! Finished the top yesterday. Making the back out of squares that are the same size as the top squares. Using scrap strips for the binding! I have learned so much from you! Thank you for your excellent educational videos! My friends give me their scraps. Wait til they see what i did with them!
Hi Phyllis.I’m a Phyllis too. Lol. This is a great video, it looks so eye catching and easy to make for a novice like me. And i just wanted to say HI to another who shares the same name, which means Green Leafy Branch. As an adult, i think :Cool name. Mom loved Phyllis Diller, and i got teased as a little kid but now most people younger than me don’t have a clue who she was. And it’s always fun when i meet another Phyllis. Have a beautiful day and be blessed.
I love this scrappy design! I made one for myself & one for my sister. Now after each quilt project, I cut up my leftovers into these rectangles so I'll have enough ready to sew into donation quilts for our regional women's shelter.
Great scrap buster quilt. I am doing this and I love how it is turning out. When I was sewing the pieces together, I felt like it was the fishes and loaves, never ending.
I just finished the scrappy quilt top and I really love it. This from someone who doesn't really like scrappy quilts. I put a black border around it to frame it. I look at it on the design wall and it reminds me of a quilt my great-grandmother made out of our old clothes. Very fond memories. Thanks for the quilt demo.
l did it! First quilting project ever and only stroller-sized but it looks fantastic - from a distance.. All the fabrics were different weights and the stitching is far perfect but I learned a lot and enjoy every minute of it. Plus the imminent great granddaughter gets a unique gift that reflects the conventional preference of her mother on the top (baby pinks and blues) but also dad's gothic aesthetic (Dia de Muertos) on the back. So sincere thanks for your skill and generosity in sharing it.
I’ve always wanted to make a quilt but it’s always felt like a huge undertaking. This can be done in bite sized pieces which is perfect for me. And it doesn’t need expensive fabric, all perfectly colour coordinated. Brilliant! Thank you!
Always a pleasue Laura! Your easy and understandable manner of explaining so we can all grasp your idea and method, and then go do our own. Lovely quilt on the wall, by the way... Danielle
I'm having so much fun cutting my scraps and enjoying all the different designs I hadn't seen in a while. I can hardly wait to start sewing. I really love scrappy quilts this will be my first one. Thanks Laura
I am so glad I saw your video, I can put them to gather very easy. I was about 4 yr. old watching my mother put then 1 peace at a time. I thought I will never do that. Well now I can. My mother called it a crazy quilt,
Thank you so much Laura, at last this is a common sense quilt which is like it was originally - using up any scrap material that is lying around. My Granny would have had 10 Canary fits if she had to actually buy material to make a quilt. She used to make rag rugs, French knitting doileys and more out of waste materials.
Laura 's sense of color combination is so neat -- I was wowed by the yellow, olive, orange scrappy quilt that came out towards the end-- very inspiring!
Thank you for showing me that all the scraps I was saving for some reason are going to be good for something. I just spent hours cutting squares but now as I get scraps I will cut them down to size right away and add to my box. It was also fun going down memory lane on the many things I have sewn since getting my machine in November. It has been a lot but I have yet to do a quilt. I am officially inspired.
I didn’t think I had enough to do a quilt. Now that I started cutting scraps. Wow! I have a lot of scraps cut out. I’m excited to see what I ended up with. Thanks!
Thank you for your tutorial on this scrappy quilt. It is always difficult to use up the small pieces of fabric we generate when making quilts. I have used this method and have produced/gifted four of these quilts since the pandemic hit Canada in March 2020. It continues to be my "go to" for using up quilt scraps. All of the recipients are thrilled to receive these one of a kind quilts (I am working to finish #24 and #25 of my "Quilting in the Time of Covid" ongoing series). Stay safe, stay healthy.
I love this quilt so much! I made one for my little 2 year old Granddaughter. She sleeps wrapped up in it every night. I keep cutting the pieces for another scrappy quilt. Thank you!
This is my favorite quilt. I’ve made 3 so far because it keeps my scrap collection under control and it is a leader and ender. It’s a go-to when I want to do some zen sewing and best of all the end product is so pretty. Thanks for sharing!
zen sewing.....thats the phrase I was looking for.....I have just learned to on a gifted ( expensive and wasted on me ) machine last year making masks for lockdown. Since then I made a pinny ( no pattern just copied one I owned ) and 2 scrappy pillowcases, they look great so now I am starting on a matching LOL duvet cover....it is sooo relaxing picking and pinning and sewing.....very rewarding too
Made a scrappy blue one from all kinds of blue hues, with a flying geese border. Absolutely fun, and it didn't take as long to finish as I thought. Over a thousand pieces, I truly enjoyed the process!
I've been wanting to make a scrappy quilt with the scraps of the dresses I've made for my daughters. You have made it so simple and easy that I feel confident I can actually make one. Thank for sharing!
What a cool , easy project with eye catching results! Not a fussy ,overly complicated style , fast to catch on to, and easy for a newbie to start off with. It makes a great, old school looking quilt. I appreciate it! Thank you and i look forward to watching more of your nifty ideas. I wish you a crafty new season, and peace, love ands joy. Happy scrapping!
This quilt is sooo very pretty !!! Since I don't have a long - arm machine, I guess I'll just hafta put the quilting "lines" on each individual large square, then sew them together. That's another way the squares won't be "going" the same way. TY for sharing this pattern with us. I'm gonna be making one of these soon when I can ever get some thread and batting to make it with - I have so many scraps to use - up, now. Love your channel. 😻
Thank you Laura for this video. I was given a box of vintage fabric that belonged to a lady who never threw away her scraps. I wondered what I would do with the fabric..now I know! lots of small scale floral prints and some plaids. so much fun!
Hi, Laura, Great video! I'm quilting my scrappy quilt (my second quilt ever) now and am loving the fun of it. I cleaned up quite a bit of my leftovers and added in some plain white squares. I treated the white fabric to enable printing, then printed them with quotes from famous women. I call it my Wise Women's Words Quilt. All the squares are 2 1/5" finished; the quilt dimensions are 60" x 80". Thanks for the inspiration!
Yes, other Phyllis, i was often teased ,called phyllis diller! I didnt mind. Fun to hear from you. I have decided to add to my scrappy quilt to lengthen it, since i have extras. It is truly my favorite quilt. laura is an amazing teacher!
I started this and it is so relaxing. I've yet to assemble the blocks. LOL! I'm enjoying braking down my scraps to size and throwing the pieces in a container. I believe they will make a beautiful quilt...soon. Thanks again for sharing.
After making masks fast and furiously to donate, I was very stressed. Wanted to sew, but not think. So I thought of your scrappy quilt. and got out my Accuquilt Go Big and cut hundreds of 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles and pieced them into a colorful 72" x 80" quilt. Is it a work of art? No! But it is colorful, cheerful and holds memories of many previous projects. And making it was very therapeutic. Also, when I laid out the first dozen blocks, I noticed that, like yours, the pattern didn't quite always work. Logic told me it should, and I figured out that if in each 8 patch block, the rectangles in the upper left quadrant are always either vertical or horizontal, then the pattern will run true throughout. (You provided a great fix for when this doesn't happen.) Thanks so much for this idea.
This is just what I was looking for! I was doubtful because of length of video how detailed it would be. Yet, you explained this so perfectly! I watched it once and I have no doubt I can do this. Thanks!
Thank you for this!. I think I found the answer to not only how to cut scraps...but also how to use my left overs. I keep quilt scraps grouped, labeled and for who. I am making fabric pieces from scraps to use for new “secondary” projects using same color scheme. This is definitely one of the easiest ways yet! Sherry, Vermont
Love your videos! I made the scrappy quilt last month - it is so colorful - I call it my happy scrappy quilt! Thank you for sharing the idea on how to use all the bits of material left over from other projects.
Thank you si much for the super useful tutorial for a absolute beginner like me... I 'm still fighting with my sewing machine but I fell in love with your beautiful blanket! The simpler the better!
I have viewed this video several times in the past couple of years. Great inspiration! I just started one with leftover charm squares and leftover jelly roll strips. I will surely use the ugly pieces I have, and will be adding in a charm pack I likely would never find use for (kewpie). Thanks for the inspiration!
Beautiful. Very wonderful idea. Thank you. And thanks to your grandmother for passing on this valuable and very useful idea for generations to come. It's really "Best out of waste (as you said scrap) in true sense and in toto. Hats off to your grandmother and God bless you for sharing this unique, very useful, economic piece of work. Try to show what to to do with the leftover small and smallest scraps of cloth and threads that are left out after sewing/stitching. Bye bye.
This is such a fun way to use up small pieces. I'm actually planning on doing a sort of advent calendar for myself for next Christmas. Each day will have 8 pieces for a block and a sort of hot drink packet like tea. Figured it would be a fun little personalized advent calendar
To keep myself from choosing the two scraps to sew together, I have two bins. One for light pieces and one for dark pieces - that way I don't stop when I see what I pulled. From a very OCD individual who's trying to be spontaneous.
Watched this again.... I definitely want to do this quilt.... The scrappiness has great appeal for me... So.. I'll take a day...and CUT! It looks like so much fun...
+SewVeryEasy one of mine will be a 30's scrap quilt... I have a bunch of 2 inch 30's strips... Most of my strips are 2.5 inches.. But, I do have scraps that can be cut into 2x3.5 pieces... I'm doing a postage stamp quilt, using leader and ender tour patched... Civil War repro., plus neutrals... Making tour patches (strip piecing) is addictive.
Love this quilt! I was recently given a bunch of scraps and went looking for this video. I have seen it before and knew it was the perfect pattern for my scraps. Thanks!
This idea of cutting the remnants into strips to fit two sizes only, and then sew them together is wonderful and is news to me!! I am going to take this idea to my aunt, to see if she starts sewing again, as for me I will look for remnants at the fabric store to make maybe a couch trow 36'by 36 I think I can handle that. Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I better start getting my sewing machine in shape.. I only have to ...get started, I love this way of piecing remnants of fabric. Just think of the may pieces I gave away, not knowing how to use them..... Thank you for the excellent tutorial., I appreciate it very much. Have a wonderful night. Josefina Mccarty
Thank you I have enjoyed your tutorial. It's so funny because the hardest thing for me is not to match because I have OCD. So my wonderful grand daughters had a race and made their own quilt! So Zianna and Ruby 9 & 7 y.o. you are my stars.
What a great idea! This is a great place to learn to start quilting as I am just now accumulating lots of scraps from various sewing projects! Thanks so much for the tip!
I really like this idea. I've seen a lot of scrappy quilts online using fat quarters from the same line paired with a neutral which really look cohesive but aren't very scrappy. I want to use my random scraps and make them look good, however i do like the idea of using one or two plain fabrics to make the scraps pop and frame them.
I'm making a jean quilt now but this will definitely be my next one. I'm looking forward to cleaning out my bins. I don't see a link to the free pattern but it's so easy your tutorial says it all.
I’m making one and sizing my strips 2.5 x4.5. I’ve been cutting my pieces a little large and then trimming each 2 unit square to 4.5” square, which works fine. And if one original piece is a little narrow I borrow some width from its mate so the total 4.5” is still possible. Only a whisker here and there doesn’t seem to show. But I’m cutting my strips the hard way. I do like you’re method of alignment for cutting. I laid mine out and thought it looked a bit toooo crazy, so I make alternate my blocks with navy blue 4.5” squares. I discovered that makes them pop by laying out the idea on my navy carpet!
Hi, beautiful quilt, I'm making this one but shadow quilting each block. is coming out beautiful, many thanks. I been learning how to quilt a lot from you. Many, many thanks.
I know this is going to become one of my most favorite quilt patterns. You are a jewel for sharing it along with your excellent tutorial. I have already shared your site with many of my quilting buddies. Lots of positive feedback from everyone. I truly appreciate your video's they are awesome. Another great big thank you from a fan
My favorite quilt is Granny’s house dresses in a variation of this pattern. She did a block of three rectangles a bit narrower, each block included a piece of white sheet at one end. All of it is handsewn. Granny died in 1991.
I love how some of the points don't line up. I feel bad when mine scoot as I'm sewing, but I see this and think that at the end of the day, the result is beautiful
I have a ton of scraps that I have kept, but wasn't sure what to do with. I think I will go through my scrap basket and see what can be used for this quilt! Thank you very much!
A lot of people use a scrap to start sewing to prevent the threads from tangling. Some call it a spider, some call it a scrap charger and some people call it a leader or ender. This would make a great leader/ender project. Sew two strips together, leave it in your machine and sew you prize winning quilt. And every time you want to stop, pull two strips from your bucket of 2x3s and sew them together as your ender. Before you know it, you'll have completed you prize winning quilt and your bucket of 2x3s will be empty! And no more throwing away those spiders! ❤🌅🌵
Thank you for showing how to cut the scraps and construct the quilt. I made one with over 1000 pieces. I love it and it used up a lot of scraps that I wanted to put to good use. Everyone who sees the quilt likes the scrappy look.

After making masks fast and furiously to donate, I was very stressed. Wanted to sew, but not think. I just rewatched this older video. I’m using up my scraps!❤😊

This is such a fun way to use up small pieces.
I'm actually planning on doing a sort of advent calendar for myself for next Christmas. Each day will have 8 pieces for a block and a sort of hot drink packet like tea.
Figured it would be a fun little personalized advent calendar
I love scrappy quilts and will definitely start collecting my scraps for this quilt. I enjoy your videos very much! Thank you!
This is great! Another great way to do this is to run the scraps thru an Accuquilt Go, or other cutter, so they are ready to go! LOVE your videos!
good idea! thanks for sharing :)
I love scrappy quilts. Your tutorials are always the best; very informative, creative and easy to do. Thank you!
+Kay Alexander WOW thanks Kay, sew very happy you are enjoying them:)
I sure appreciate your videos! Thanks for taking the time to create them! with Covid.... quilting guilds haven't been meeting much...
I love this so much. I keep all of scraps and I wanted to do a quilt but I wasn’t sure how to do it but now I do! Thank you so much for this!
I enjoyed learning how to cut them and how you make it a truescrap quilt! love hpw you teach! excellent!
To keep myself from choosing the two scraps to sew together, I have two bins. One for light pieces and one for dark pieces - that way I don't stop when I see what I pulled. From a very OCD individual who's trying to be spontaneous.
smart! The ocd in me tries to take over with these things haha
That's a great ideal. I was having a panic attack just from watching the video 😂
My OCD slows me down because I keep trying to make it "perfect" instead of random.
Wonderful idea!!
Me being me I would try to do it in rainbow order!
Just finished my scrappy quilt, inspired by this video. So happy with it. Thank you.
Thank you so much ma'am.
You're always teaching easy technique, making it very simple for a new comer like me. Great.
Have a wonderful day!!💐💐💐

i love this pattern so much, this is as close as i get to “proper” quilting lol. they always look so good too!
I love this idea! I'm going to start a 2x3 1/2" scrap basket. Your quilt is beautiful. Thank you for another great video :)
+Paula Sydney Thanks and thanks for watching

I just found you!! What a treasure your channel has become to me!
Scraps from my last project. Problem solved with this scrap quilt. As always, fabulous. Thanks.
You’re a great teacher with a pleasant voice.🌸
I absolutely LOVE the look of the fabrics you're piecing together in this video!!!! I would have paid a pretty penny for the finished product!
I love this, I think I have enough scraps to make 3 or 4 quilts. Might be a good time for a sewing day to teach my daughter some more sewing tips.
+Jennie Wallick This would be a great teaching quilt:)
What a fun idea to use up small pieces. The quilt turned out super, and it would sure be fun to do with a group of friends.
I'm making a jean quilt now but this will definitely be my next one. I'm looking forward to cleaning out my bins. I don't see a link to the free pattern but it's so easy your tutorial says it all.
Thank you for this video. I finished my first quilt using this method. It was so much fun!
It was wonderful to meet you in person. I can't wait to have enough scraps to make this quilt❣❣❣
It won't take long :) have a great day!
I love the quilt on your wall. Im going to try this. A friend of mine just brought me a lot of 30s fabrics. Very excited to use them in this fashion.

+Nisreen Ameen thanks and thanks for watching
at 5:08 controlled color setting: her sense of color selection is always so neat!
My favorite quilt is Granny’s house dresses in a variation of this pattern. She did a block of three rectangles a bit narrower, each block included a piece of white sheet at one end. All of it is handsewn. Granny died in 1991.
Hi Laura, I love love love this quilt. I promise never to discard another scrap.
+Molly Serkin lol so many things you can do with scraps:)
I love how some of the points don't line up. I feel bad when mine scoot as I'm sewing, but I see this and think that at the end of the day, the result is beautiful
I totally love this idea, a quilt made of all the pieces of my various projects
That's just beautiful! Thanks for the tutorial. As a beginner quilter, I think I could do this.😌😌
Thank you for your time, I love watching your channel, your Honestly A True BLESSING.
Love your vids! I've started one but changed the size as I had loads of 2.5 strips and charm squares left over. Thanks for your great tutorial!!
good for you, let me know how it turns out:)
I have a ton of scraps that I have kept, but wasn't sure what to do with. I think I will go through my scrap basket and see what can be used for this quilt! Thank you very much!
Don't pick through them ...use all of them! What a great way of remembering all that you have done:)
I meant some might be too small, but I will definitely use all that are large enough! Thank you!
Your tutorial gave me a great idea for using extra blocks from previous quilts.
I just made one of these to donate and love it. Mixed pinks and purples.
I m going to make this later on! I am a teenage sewer and this seems so easy! I am going to try it and see if I can do it! Wish me luck
you can do IT:)
I did follow your lesson and mad a square it's fun but now I want to make something but not a quilt will keep watching for ideas from you
Let me see what I can come up with, thanks for joining along :)
Hi , thank you from a beginner quilter. Excited to try this easy method. Happy sewing.
Hello. I am from New Zealand and tomorrow i will start cutting and joy o joy How lovely is that.
Thanks very much
Have fun and please share the picture when you are done:)
Great idea :)
Great Idea! That will be my next project! I've boxes full of scraps, thank you,
Laura!
