Have you ever tried making an XL Quilt as you go quilt block? What would you do differently? This was so much fun, I can totally see a whole quilt made with several blocks just like these. Also, did you know about the tip for keeping your thread in the needle when you're using the thread cutting feature on your sewing machine? Let me know and enjoy!
Made a standard sized pillow sham to use up scraps to go with those in a Queen-sized quilt. Have also taken a small extra pieced block as the center for this style of scrappy string pieced block. Fun!
This is stinking cute...I've. Got about 4 or more scrappy quilts I need to finish quilting..I love scrappy ..Have you made jar quilts? I made a bunch and love making them as well.. I bought all kinds of fruit fabrics..Thanks again!Fun video ❤
I have been sewing the tiniest of scrap fabric together, and it is very relaxing for me. I actually need a small pillow case, so I will make one of these. Have a great week 😊
When you run out of scraps: if there is a quilt shop near you, they often have classes which generate lots of strips. The quilt shop near me sells bags of those strip packs for very cheap, they also sell larger scrap fabric pieces by the pound. That is how I first attempted to learn how to quilt blocks when I didn’t have a lot of money for fabric.
There's not many fabric stores within easy driving distance for me. The one that's about 30 minutes away is a small one and the ladies Make quilts. They have a basket now and then filled with scraps for a couple dollars a piece. There's some cute pieces for kids that I wouldn't normally buy. Got one with chickens on it and made my mom a hexy flower with chickens on it to sew to a crazy quilt. A real crazy crazy quote 🙃
I don't have a thread cutter because I use vintage Singer sewing machines with only a straight stitch for quilt piecing . Machines that can do zig-zag never have as straight of a stitch as a vintage straight stitch machine or that Juki that everybody likes so much. This is a terrific way to make a summer quilt or a blanket for tummy time for people who have babies.. By sewing it to a piece of fabric instead of using paper finishes it all in one step. My scrap pile just keeps getting bigger and I don't have any kind of organization other than a box. I definitely enjoyed your video and I hope you continue to make them.
I agree, vintage sewing machines sew straight stich like nothing else!. I guess the less machines do, the better they are at it! I have a couple of videos on scrap organization, don't know if you've watched any. And yeah, this type of quilt just screams summer! 😀
Another great tutorial on how to use my scraps. I think I'm going to make a scrappy baby doll quilt and pillow for my granddaughters babies 🥰. Thank you, Sandy, for another great tutorial 😊
your laugh is so warm and lovely and you are so well spoken and eloquent! i really enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing your talent and hard work with us 😊
Awesome. My grandkids and friends loved it. Ages 4-11. They love it. Never worry if someone don't like there would be dozens who will. Guarantee.. by experience 😊😊😊
I have literally started doing this work a few weeks ago. I was wondering the best way to make an envelope cushion cover this was so simple. Thank you.
1:42 There is a difference, but only a small one. QAYG is used to describe a project when you have batting/wadding as your foundation rather than a piece of fabric. Then you join the quilt blocks together with sashing strips and add backing fabric.
I'll probably have that issue soon but someone suggested here to go to local quilt shops and try to get the leftover scraps from their classes and that sounds like a great idea. I know you can find som bags on Etsy but I'm not sure what they go for...
Hi Debra. That's awesome, congratulations! For the scrappy project, it depends on what you want to do. It its the same project, it doesn't take that many scraps. 😁
You could but for those smaller pieces it would be harder. This way you get a clean back and if you used batting between the two or instead of the back, you would have a quilted quilt block immediately.
I started tonight but having trouble with edges being exposed. Can you do a video on how to avoid that? Especially when using small scraps. If I add a piece over two pieces. The top piece has raw edges.
Hi. I will be doing more of these, yes. The trick is to make sure the last piece you add is bigger than the previous one and that it covers the first piece completely when you're pining it.
Thank you for your wonderful video! I love your block! I’m confused about the back pieces though. Are they both 18 inches? How do they overlap if they are both 18 inches big?
I know this technique as QUILT AS YOU GO /QAYG or foundation piecing ... Can be done with a backing ....or .... without a backing that is added on later. Depends upon what you want to do with your made fabric ... what project you use it for.

Oh thanks for the advice! I’m wanting to learn how to quilt, so no scraps yet, but I love the look of scrap quilts.

Sounds great! Have fun 😁
Very cute! Organic in design. I like that it’s quick so I’ll finish it.
Yeah, I'm all into quick and easy these days 🙂
Love this tutorial. When I am working with scraps I use Elmer’s school glue to hold smaller pieces in place. Just a dab works. Love my scrap piles
Thank you 😁
What an infectious positive energy you have! I hope you havw a wonderful day my friend

lovely crumb quilt tutorial. I am obsessed with sewing crumb quilt blocks! just dont have enough scraps boo hoo

You can make a crazy quilt out of it.
how awesome will that look??
Wow is amazing I'm lazy to join fabric pieces but after seeing this I'm willing to try it 👌❤️❤️❤️

So cute!!
Love it! 😍 Thanks for sharing!😃
Put your batting and backing underneath the base and quilt as you go.
I love doing that. All that's left is binding
That's cool
love this
I want to try this but not sure if I have enough scraps. Just finished my very first quilt.
Hi Debra. That's awesome, congratulations! For the scrappy project, it depends on what you want to do. It its the same project, it doesn't take that many scraps. 😁
very cute
what size is the white background
18 by 18 inches
What is the purpose of sewing it to the white backing? Couldn't you just sew scraps together and then cut to square?
You could but for those smaller pieces it would be harder. This way you get a clean back and if you used batting between the two or instead of the back, you would have a quilted quilt block immediately.

Since I'm new to all this, can you tell me what you are using to sew the scraps on? And the brand please?
Hi! It's thermal adhesive, I use heat n'bond, I've left a link for it in the description. Have a great day!

I recently discovered and love it, so practical and fun! ☺️
I use scraps for every. Except I don't use that muslin piece. I just sew the pieces together or on batting. Then cut my shapes afterwards.
Yes, I usually sew them into batting as well.
I do it that way, too.
That way, the quilting is all done when the square is all done.
I learned it in a Women's Day magazine back in the 1970s
@@ellenhofer3343 love that!
I have 13Blocks Done I think I need 2 more To do.
💪 almost there!!
What do you use for a base fabric?
Hi! An old white sheet, it doesn't have to be anything fancy
Sometimes the back of a fabric is kind of cool to use upside down. Embrace your mistakes!
I like that! Never thought of it 🙂
This is called a crazy quilt a very old quilt😊 pattern!
😁

Is is unlikely you’ll ever run out of scraps
Don't talk, just sew,
you talk too much, we are more interested your action
That's rude!
I get bags of scraps at thrift stores. Some bags even have quilt blocks
all completed!
That's so cool 😎
