I've been daily driving a 1988 Honda Prelude 2.0Si 4WS since I purchased it in 2002. Over the years, I have done all the repairs and maintenance myself, and sometimes with the help of a friend. Early on in the ownership of my Prelude, the engine broke a rod, but fortunately the damage was not catastrophic.. Performed a rebuild with a used crankshaft and set of New Old Stock connecting rods (fortunate finds), rod and crank bearings, 3 new valves, and all the other parts needed to refresh the engine such as rings, gaskets, seals, timing components and clutch set were installed, along with a very mild port & polish on the cylinder head intake and exhaust runners while waiting for parts. The engine has been extremely reliable with basic maintenance and periodic tune-up over the years. Around 2009, I replaced the aging exhaust with a full stainless 4-2-1 OBX Header, and stainless 2.5" Catback exhaust from Legal Speed Designs (LSD), which has, in my own opinion, the most desirable exhaust note of any catback system available for the Prelude.
I have often driven newer and more powerful vehicles, which are sometimes fun and certainly faster, but I always find the handling dynamics of the Prelude to be highly satisfying. It is a really enjoyable and rewarding car to own, drive and maintain.

It's actually a "Limited Lifetime Warranty" on all safety restraints and harnesses, but in the manual it states for the "Useful life of the vehicle" so depending on the condition of the vehicle and the dealership service department's discretion, they may or may not do this service under warranty. I plan on asking my local Honda dealer for this repair on my 1988 Prelude 2.0Si 4WS, but I'm waiting until I repair a couple of body issues before I take it in, to reduce the chance of refusal. My seatbelts will still lock when pulled, but in cold and humid weather, the seatbelts do not like to retract like they should.

Nice Prelude! Would they be worth more stock today?? Owned an 88 Prelude S for years, great car, quality built- no rattles or squeaks. Good reliable engine, no leaks. It ate half shafts--put in 3sets before I sold it. Presently I have a low mileage 2000 SH, IMO not as good as my 88. It rattles, leaks, hard shifting, harder to work on. Love Preludes, personally the earlier models were the best.

I have the same dual carb B20A3 engine and it may seem slow on the paper but in real life it has plenty of torque around 4000 rpm and feels pretty sporty driving it 0-70 km/h in the city. And there is this feeling like squeezing into the seets, especially on the 2nd gear)) So maybe you have to regulate your carbs? Because it could be set to "sport" or "eco" roughly speaking)

FUN FACT: The 1988 3rd gen prelude was the fastest car beating even supercars, Ferrari's and Corvette's, etc in the slalom test that year.

    • @ConnorLee

We can’t find them here in the US either. It’s pretty much junkyards or online forums. People selling or parting out Ludes on Facebook marketplace. It’s just a challenge but if you look hard enough, you will find most of what you need. Not a lot of aftermarket companies still support the 3rd gen

Ey man, just discovered you channel, and i've been thinking about getting an older car with pop ups because i really like those. I want to start my project car and learn to work on cars and i was thinking about geting a 3rd gen prelude or a 5th gen celica, they are more between my budget but i really dont know which one to get. I like both of them but the exterior on the celica i like better while the interior on the prelude its more cool. The thing is the content you can find online on the celica is very scarce, most people have 6th/7th gen and i can hardly find anything on the 5th gen
What do you think about both of them?

    • @ConnorLee

I think both would be really great options! Obviously I’m biased towards the Lude haha
3rd gem prelude content is quite scarce as well so I don’t know your going to be any better off going one way or the other in regards to available content. I don’t know much about the celicas but it sure would be a cool project!
