She is a truly beautiful steam locomotive. A suruvior of days now long past, 765 is more alive than ever. Beautiful whistle. I appreciate the time and effort of this production, very well done on all fronts.
This is one of the best steam locomotive films I've seen in a long time! The engine starting up almost sounds like cannons going off! Talk about raw power! Great vid!
Incredible invention. Its amazing how just 2 pistons can lug all that weight like it’s nothing. That whistle would sound amazing on a huge stereo system to annoy the neighbors.
765's exhaust chuffs sound like gunshots, echoing around the surrounding hills. What an amazing sight to behold, and I imagine it was far more exhilarating in person!
Thank you for including the startup. I got to see this beast several times in the fall, back in the 80’s and 90’s. I still remember feeling that thump in my chest when it started moving again. Also the whistle was absolutely haunting on dark fall night.
This is probably the best steam locomotive video I've come across. Well composed with scenes taken from optimal vantage points surrounded by luscious green foilage. That first view with 765 starting from a dead stop was very impressive giving one the impression of actually being there. I may be wrong but I think 765 is a Pacific style locomotive with that 2-8-4 wheel arrangement. Even though 765's been a busy locomotive in excursion service I hope she comes through the Pittsburgh area in the not too distant future as it's been many a moon since we've had mainline steam in our town.
NKP 765 is a Class S-2 2-8-4 Berkshire Type steam locomotive built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1944. A 4-6-2 is a Pacific Type steam locomotive, like OR&N 197, built in 1905 by Baldwin.
A 69" driver berk is probably an ideal excursion engine. They will never allow the speed that could be achieved with 80" driver locomotives like SP 4449 and UP 844 and with the smaller drivers 765 can really dig in and pull.
Good ol American muscle and shotgun exhaust. Good job preserving this example of history FWRHS. You don't know where you're going to until you know where you've come from
This is one of the best steam locomotive videos I have ever seen. The way you were able to capture the sound is amazing. Although there are lots of videos of 765, I have been coming back to watch this particular one for over two years. Thank you for doing such a great job of documenting this locomotive and sharing your video!
I saw the NKP 765 up close and even got to go into the cabin, needing a ramp to get up there. Even a six foot tall person can stand in there comfortably. Truly a steam giant.
For those of you who have never had the experience of personally being around one of these locomotives to witness the awesome display of power these wonderful machines display, well....the first minute of this excellent video says it all !! thanks for posting this .
Same here, I can't stop watching the opening scene also. You can just feel the power of these magnificent machines, and to think they were basically designed with a slide ruler.
Someone needs to take this sound and use it for model steam trains. Even expensive ones have garbage sounds from the factory. Some people to pretty good with making custom ones for the GEVO’s and other diesels, but I’ve never heard a good steam engine

Perhaps it's because the whistle sounds hearty, healthy, and triumphant, in bold defiance of its obsolescence? And it starts chugging along, still sounding strong, healthy, and triumphant.

Awesome shots! Perfect lighting! Love this whole thing, but especially, the shot staring at 4:07, just a stunning shot! The huge smoke plume, the way they kicked on the cylinder cocks so it looks like they are going out of a fog filed river valley, priceless! Great job!
Diesel and electric locomotives have their appeal, but nothing beats steam. There are just so many moving parts and it's awesome to see them in action. Terrific video. Thank you!

To this day, this video still has the most legendary shot of 765. The raw power in the opening is unlike anything else I’ve seen.

The unions would give this a thumbs down since this icon of the past is a threat to the union operated diesels! : )

Perhaps it's because the whistle sounds hearty, healthy, and triumphant, in bold defiance of its obsolescence?
