  • Day 7 of the Great Britain rail tour saw two Black 5 locomotives arrive in Carlisle from Edinburgh. Here they were exchanged for Battle of Britain Class locomotive Tangmere for the onward journey to Liverpool. A little difficulty with uncoupling the buckeye coupling and then the Black 5's headed out to Carnforth, soon after Tangmere came from Upperby yard and made a slippery departure with what looked like a good shove from the rear judging by the acceleration of the train.

Thank you Bob. She gave us another good show the day after getting the train moving after a signal stop on London Road curve. Classic Southern performance

At 18:00 you zoomed in on the air compressor or was it an oiler? That silver handle going around got me puzzled. Really awesome video 👍😊😎

Thanks Dave You are right it is an air compressor and has an oiler fitted on it that has a small crank handle, they use it to pump oil by hand but when the compressor runs on steam the handle moves round. Got me puzzled too until I saw one in a drivers cab and asked about it. I don't know who made them, our trains never had air brakes in days of steam so these were added after all the vacuum braked stock was either converted or scrapped. I know you used air brakes from long ago with Westinghouse pumps on many locomotives.

@@ccrx6700 Interesting. Vacuum is easy to make with steam which is why we stuck with them but air brakes have more stopping force so are really the best to use Old #4 must be old LOL
