    Right before your interview, make sure to turn up the camera when nobody else can see you. Macbooks have photo booth for example. Then you can see what's in the background and angle of your face and so on.
    The best thing I did was signing up for lunch club and meeting people over video to practice talking over Zoom as I'm unemployed and socially awkward.

    Thank you so much for your content - I watched pretty much everything before having the most unconventional video interview ever yesterday (it wasn't so much an interview, but more an informal chat - I didn't even get the "Tell Me About Yourself"! I did manage to inject a couple of STAR stories though - huge thanks for the advice on those). I sent a follow up email today to thank them for taking the time to talk with me, and literally one minute later, I got a reply to let me know that an offer was coming my way!
    One thing I would suggest for video interviews where ambient lighting isn't great (it was a short notice interview taking place late afternoon on a dull December day!) - spectacle wearers need to be aware of reflected glare coming from the screen. It was only on testing my camera shortly before the interview that I noticed how distracting it was, so on starting the call, I removed my glasses so my eyes were visible rather than 2 reflections of my screen!
    Huge thanks once again - your advice has made a world of difference (as well as making me cringe remembering prior interviews where I have been less enlightened!)

    I just had my second virtual interview, the first virtual interview was a week ago. I am not sure what the psychology is behind this but I had a hard time switching to what seems to be my professional persona that has always gotten me through in person interviews. The in person interview I actually like more than virtual. I thought being a more reserved person I would appreciate being virtual but I am actually suddenly more out going during a face to face interview. I am unsure how I did on this second interview being in a relaxed environment yet trying to not be too relaxed. If anything it is practice, right?

    I am glad I found this channel. I was laid off recently after 30+ years. I just received an invite for a Digital Interview and realize I am not prepared. I have no camera on my computer so I will have to use my cell. I will watch many of your videos for inspiration.
    Question: Do I need to buy a web cam, or is ok to use cell?

    • @LeahKimBrighton
      @LeahKimBrighton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Beth, great question! You likely don't need to buy a web cam, unless your current computer doesn't have one. But, making sure that you have decent lighting, a clean background, and good wifi will be helpful, too. You can learn more here th-cam.com/video/XVq2zGDDS2M/w-d-xo.html. Hope it helps! 😊

    Omg!!!! This is WONDERFUL!!!! It is GOLD!!!!!! I am so excited to try this. And great energy with very nice ideas am! Thank you so much!!!! I am soooo glad I came across this. I have been trying to get into tech or university field recruiting and will apply your tips, I have been so longing to work with a team. I am an artist and teacher but I need a team to grow and feel well especially in pandemic. I have no experience in recruiting but it's related ... I have volunteered and I feel lost where to start even with internship company posts its expected you have years of recruiting experience (which I don't have ) its so confusing... any ideas what I can do?
    I already have been using the computer higher, I agree , it Is sooooo important. Great idea to type up your star story and questions.

    • @creatureofhabit5129
      @creatureofhabit5129 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SelfMadeMillennial I have never made a 30-60-90 day plan before (tbh I didn't even know they were an official thing). I have discovered that sometimes they ask for one in the interview process - but even if they don't ask for one, I know this is going to be such a game changer for me when I start my next job - just being intentional about my personal onboarding. I've been researching a lot, based on what they want, my experience that I can bring to make a quick impact but also taking into account the training time that will be required.
      Obviously every job is different and subjective and so for your audience you probably cant be too specific but what have you seen being really effective in a new starter? Is there anything that you would say is a great power move to "bring it" in your first 90 days?

    I've been through a few interviews lately, and I always get asked the question, can you tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a guest and I have a unique story, and I always ask if we can come back to the question to save awe that's such a sweet moment because I found the first time I used my story that was the entire interview and that I wasn't getting interviewed for my skill set needless to say I didn't get the job.

    Thanks for the tips! However, in the video, it kind of looks like you are looking at the space above the camera. I would recommend filming yourself beforehand to check where you are looking during a call or video making. It really distracts the one on the other side because all they can think is “wait, is she looking int the camera? Is she looking at herself? What is she looking at?”. Make sure the person watching feels like they are being looked at 😁👍

    I had a County government Zoom interview today and the "screensharing" tip DOESN'T WORK AT ALL. I don't know if I was the only one but when I asked "can I share my screen to show my previous work and walk you through it?" One of the panel interviewers completely rejected me and said "why don't you explain it to me verbally". What I want to show is a previous research poster and I have already sent it to HR before my interview because they requested me to do so. I was SHOCKED. I asked again, saying that it could be easier to understand and visualize, and then that interviewer was reluctant to open the sharing access. The vibe changed after this screensharing thing, and I think I won't get the job...☹

    How would I convey company morale and teamwork. Example my last job they incorporated an onsite gym. A lot of folks didn't really use it I did and lost 10 pounds. I thanked the HR staff for the neat gym & I was asked to be in our company video. It was used to get others in there & help with company morale and show how they cared about our over all health. I also got different departments to donate for the homeless. The new company advertises some of these types of actions. How would I get that across? I believe I saved the video I was in.
