    Couple of things:
    1) Boy came back from war. Lost his limbs, hearing, eyesight, everything, due to a landmine.
    2) Clips were from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun".
    3) The fast "choppy" thrashing before the solo is SOS for "kill me". That's what the officer was saying in the film, "over and over again, kill me". Metallica played that.
    This song is a masterpiece.

This is an anti-war song inspired by the book "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The clips in the video are from the movie made from that book. Metallica bought the rights so that they could use the footage. The book is crazy intense and I do recommend it. This song will mean much more after reading it. Also, I would recommend having the lyrics handy for all of these songs that you are listening to for the first time. So much more meaning in the lyrics when combined with the feel of the music.
I really enjoy seeing you all react to the music that I grew up with. My kids and their friends are constantly exposing me to different music and I am always better because of it. Music is the universal language...put yourself where the artist is in the moment and feel the feels...no better way to express humanity in my opinion.

I'm going to be honest, I believe your subs probably wanted a serious intent with this particular song. Its theme is one of a fallen soldier who has given the most and is left with nothing but pain and not even the dignity of death. I think they probably just wanted this to be a seriously reacted song. • @Frostrazor
    @Frostrazor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +397

I will explain the nature of metal music - and this speaks to a lot of your comments:
"I feel like the guitar has a voice and has something to say"
    "I feel the anger"
"This makes me want to throw a chair"
    etc.
Metal music has epic and profound lyrics like old-school rap. In fact metal and rap are very similar in their cadences and flow. And rap even samples a lot of metal bass riffs. Metal music is predicated on telling deep stories that speak to some serious and often times dark shit. Just like good rap music does....or did.
Think of the lyrics as painting a picture like a movie does. Every good movie has music that enhances the scene. Try watching some horror without the music - not as captivating. Try watching an action scene or adventure scene without the music in the movie - not as exciting or adrenalizing.
The instruments in the metal band are playing the mood music to enhance the emotion, to make you feel a sort of way that is congruent with the lyrical message and imagery.
Metal music and Classical music are both the two most powerfully moving music out there; so you can see the correlation on how that music is composed in the song - to affect your emotions. Yes the guitar is talking, yes the drums are beating a war like pattern and rhythm to enhance and escalate the feelings of doom or aggression. Just like in a movie.
As many have said the movie clips in this music video is from Johnny Got His Gun. The title "One" is asking the question "Well what about that ONE?" In the book that the movie was based off of, it says that a person left in the condition that the young soldier is in after the mortar shell has about one-in-a-million chance of ever surviving the injuries. Well....if there's one in a million....what do you do with that One?
Now imagine this happening to someone that went to war so that you can stay home and have freedoms. When you get a moment - thank a soldier for their service.

Sigh, I knew the video version would confuse all of them. Which is why I am starting to feel that the only real way for this group to react to videos is by using "lyric versions". Because when you have the lyrics in front of you, you KNOW that the song about wanting to die because the horrors of war has taken everything from you physically, mentally and emotionally. That due to a landmine, without arms, legs, speech, hearing, sight, that your body becomes an endless torture chamber of darkness and silence, cut off from the "outside world", slowly driving you insane. I agree and disagree, your right but one thing your wrong on one thing....he wants to die ( his head is sending a military code S.O.S. - Help! Wants to die!!) because he has nothing to live for, his father is keeping him alive and it's the patient's thoughts you hear his mind thinking out loud as to the guitarist emotions to war and deaths.
1989 I saw this video while pregnant with my first child and this song scares me to death I can feel the anger and pain and feeling so much death. I refuse to hear this song since then. War is not right and too many deaths just FOR POWER.
Watching you guys watching this is not as painful because of stopping and trying to understand this music video.
Oh BTW I was curious as to how you would react that's why I'm watching. Totally missed the point!!! This song is so deep to death that I could feel his pain.....when I first watched it I didn't get the video until now but my feelings still remains the same.

The reason you don't know whats going on is because you all are talking over the song. It's about a troop that got blown up and he ended up deaf, blind, mute, no arms, and no legs. He is alone in the dark, can't move arms or legs, can't talk or even hear them. It's like a dream but he knows he's not asleep and its real. He shakes his head in Morse Code "SOS" for help and "Kill me" over and over again.

That’s the deal with many very well written metal songs…the whole song tells a story and each part feeds into or off of the parts that precede it or follows. Pausing in the middle of this song in particular causes them to lose the story line. Because these guys are very insightful and observant, I would love to hear what they would have to say about this video the second time through. Also this was based off of a true story that's why they wrote the song since they really support the military and troops that fight for all of us 🤘❤🤘

    I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, wake me
Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, help me
    Darkness
    Imprisoning me
    All that I see
    Absolute horror
    I cannot live
    I cannot die
    Trapped in myself
    Body my holding cell
    Landmine
    Has taken my sight

Guy got blowed up in war. Lost all limbs. Lost hearing and speech. Nods head in sos, " kill me". The rest of us keep people alive because they are technically alive. He spends the rest of what we concider life, in a vacuum.
He wants to die. We dont hear him.
    Nobody hears him.
Imagine you were asleep and couldn't wake up from a nightmare. For the rest of your life, nobody knew you were sleeping.

I've watched a couple of your Metallica reaction vids now. When listening to any of their music, please for your own sakes google the meaning of behind each Metallica song and find their printed lyrics (especially for their 80's albums) so y'all won't be so confused and asking your audience to do the work for you.
    Respectfully,
    A lifetime Metallica fan

The black & white scenes are from a 1971 antiwar movie "Johnny Got his Gun". It's a powerful song. You can see that the injured soldier just wants to die after all of the injuries he's endured.

I feel like this one was pearls to pigs! Here's a little help.
Movie scenes are the 1971 movie, "Johnny Got His Gun", based on the 1938 novel of the same name by Dalton Trumbo. It's about an American soldier named Joe Bonham that was blown appart by a mortar shell on the last day of WWI. When he regains consciousness several days later, he is blind, deaf, and mute. He lost his whole face and his whole mouth. His eyes, nose and ears and gone. He lost all his limbs. Due to the immense brain trauma Joe endured, doctors assumed he was brain dead. They determined that all his movements were unconscious, and caused solely by autonomous nervous activity. He was just a brain-dead body kept alive by medical technology, to be studied until it dies. But Joe was conscious and feels everything they do to him. He finally managed to communicate with a nurse, who drew letters on his chest to write messages to him, and noticed his responses indicated he was conscious. Doctors did not believe the nurse at first, and thought it was wishful thinking and confirmation bias on her part. Then, Joe remembered Morse code and started sending messages by moving his head. This happened in a military hospital at the end of WWI, so there were many people around who knew Morse code. So they started talking to him by tapping Morse code on his chest, and he'd answer in Morse code by shaking his head. Now he's no longer a brain-dead curiosity. He's a conscious person who is asking them to end his existence. Now it's about medical ethics. How medicine has to keep him alive, now that they know Joe is conscious. How medical science condemned Joe to living in this condition by keeping him alive when they thought he was brain-dead, and that they were only keeping his body alive. Joe asks to die. That's all I'm going to say about the movie, because that's what's relevant for this video, but it's a great movie!
The music video shows relevant clips from the movie, including some dialogue which explain parts of the plot. Here is what they say:
    INTRO
It begins with sounds of combat; gunshots, field instructions. A shell falls and blows up. Cut to the surgical team. One mentions the massive trauma to Joe's brain. A second one declares: "He'll never know what happened to him, indicating, they believed Joe was brain-dead. The third surgeon declares that, had he seen the damage to Joe's brain, he would not have permitted him to live. Working those two scenes together, you can pretty much figure out that Joe was hit by an exploding device, and was in the hospital with such severe brain trauma, that medical professionals assumed he was brain-dead.
Now we see that Joe appears to be dreaming, and is calling for help. His head is bandaged in a way that his face is completely covered. Cut to philosophy of war with democracy as a motivation to send young men to war. We now know Joe enlisted and the reason for it. We see Joe live, then again comes the explosion. Back to the surgeons explaining how Joe is brain-dead and incapable of feeling or thinking. But Joe is thinking. He's wondering whether he's dead, dreaming, or awake.
    FIRST VERSE
Listen to the lyrics. They're Joe's thoughts.
    [Lyrics: I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me]
    SECOND VERSE
[Lyrics: Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now]
    CHORUS A
[Lyrics:Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh, please God, wake me.]
Next scene is Joe kept alive by medical devices, trying to communicate. They don't understand him. He realises he'll be like this for years.
    THIRD VERSE
[Lyrics: Back in the womb, it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live.]
    FOURTH VERSE
[Lyrics: Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me]
    CHORUS A
[Lyrics: Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh, please God, wake me.]
In the next clip, Joe thinks he's "like a piece of meat that keeps on living".
    BRIDGE #1
He contemplates his condition. He tries in vain to call for help.
    CHORUS B
[Lyrics: Now the world is gone, I'm just one
    Oh, God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh, please God, help me.]
    BRIDGE #2
    Movie clips:
Despair, delirium. Sees himself as a freak in a carnival show. His father is the M.C.
War scene. Colonel says: "Death has a dignity all its own."
More war. We see a flare. Explosion again. More despair and Joe calls to his father for help. Then, vision of Joe's father saying: "Don't you remember when you were little?" About how Joe played with his friend using Morse code. This is when Joe figures out he can communicate with Morse code.
    FIFTH VERSE
    [Lyrics: Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see, absolute horror
I cannot live, I cannot die
    Trapped in myself
    Body, my holding cell.]
    Enter the caring nurse.
The medical team figures out Joe is communicating with them using Morse code. He's alive and conscious. He's asking them for help.
    SIXTH VERSE
[Lyrics: Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech, taken my hearing
Taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul
Left me with life in hell.]
Now Joe is asking the medical team to end his life.
Military surgeon asks the military chaplain if he has a message for Joe, but the chaplain replies: "He's a product of you profession, not mine!" He's telling the surgeon, "this one's on you". He wants to die, you kept him alive, he should be dead, now we have to keep him alive. We can't kill him.
Meanwhile, the nurse is breaking down.
    GUITAR SOLO
Joe asks nurse to kill him. Nurse tries to kill Joe by crimping his breathing tube. Joe is thankful. Doctor enters the room, catching the nurse in the act, and stops her from killing Joe.
Joe says: "Pray for me", calls for his father, then envisions his father saying that each man faces death by himself. Alone.
Joe says: "Goodbye father." Joe is alone with his thoughts
    OUTRO
Joe thinks of what he could do if...
"SOS... Help me! SOS... Help me!"
People are celebrating the end of the war.
Joe is alone in the dark, forgotten, condemned to live like this.

This song is about a soldier fighting in a war and a mortar blows off in his face. He can't hear, see, smell, taste and he doesn't have arms or legs. He comes out of a coma in a hospital. During the time he is in the hospital he reflects on his life and things his father told him. Eventually the doctors get worried because he's having spasms all the time, but he doesn't seem to be dying. They call in the general and he can't figure it out either, but the soldier with the general recognizes it. "It's Morse code," he says. The general asks what he is saying and the soldier looks for a minute and then says, "He is saying K-I-L-L- M-E over and over again."
The lyrics are based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, which is about World War I.
In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie that was directed by Trumbo starring Timothy Bottoms and Jason Robards. The video for the song uses images and monologues from that movie.

One of my absolute favorites! My daughter and I headband to this. James Hetfield-vocals, Kirk Hammett-lead guitarist, Jason Newsted- bass, and Lars Ulrich-drums.
The song is about someone with PTSD.
