Metallica never made the same album twice... this was their 4th album 'And justice for all' from 1988. 'One' was inspired by the novel and movie 'Johnny got his gun' (which was used for the video) about a WW I soldier who is wounded in combat and has lost his limbs, sight, hearing and voice... This was also Metallica's first music video, which was low-budget & shot in a warehouse... released in 1989, the video debuted on MTV and pushed the 'And justice for all' album to 2 million in sales (8 million today)
So Metallica is one of those bands that have different versions of themselves, because they are really talented and they have different formations, and that is very clear in their albuns. But what is impressive for me about them, is their essence, their identity through all these years with different formations. They are just true legends! Check it out "Fade to Black" as well, cause you're going to love it.
This is very pleasant to come on here to. I haven't watched your reaction yet but I am right after this. This is Metallica's first video and the music hits real hard and the lyrics along with the movie clips makes it emotional. Can't wait to see this.
Metallica "WHIPLASH" to be a true metal-head. It is the DEFINITION of "head-banging". Metallica "And Justice For All" is possibly the most socially-aware song ever written. Metallica "Turn The Page" one of the BEST cover songs recorded.
Yes it’s from Johnny got his gun. A book that became a movie and Metallica has the movie rights to it. The book was actually written about a WWI soldier from Canada.
"Only a few notes make my spine curve". Poetic expression for music that makes you feel it, not just listen to it. Sadly there is not much that makes my spine curve nowadays.
This song is one of the biggest ones (no pun intended) from Metallica. I was at the concert last week, and the played it, imagine how HARD I started singing/headbanging when the DARKNESS IMPRISIONING me part kicked in. Great reaction as always, I'm very happy you enjoyed it so much, it's a incredible musical arrangement indeed.
This is Metallica’s very first video. The song is based on a war movie called ‘Johnny Got His Gun’, and the movie clips are masterfully interwoven in the video. 1971 is when the movie came out, and the soldier lost his arms, legs, and ability to speak. Incredible song and devastating video l
This video was my first Metallica experience, when I saw it on MTV as a teenager. Few videos have ever impacted me as much as this one did, the definition of living Hell! Twenty-five years later as a Veteran who has fought in war, I am thankful I did not have such a fate!
I get a rush listening to this song every time I hear it, such an epic song by Metallica, however I think this is the first time I was excited for a reactor to experience it and dying to hear what you had to say in the pauses. Absolutely LOVED your reaction! You understood the song and the story and how it ties in to this movie it was inspired by. "One" is on my top ten list of all (metal) rock songs ever made, glad you love it too.
There is NO Comparison to hearing this song live in the 4th row in Amherst, MA Back in The early 90's! The pyrotechnics almost melted your face off and the intensity was PURE RAW EMOTION! I WILL NEVER FORGET that Concert!
I love your honest reactions. Your conflicted feelings on this song are understandable due to the subject matter, but there's nothing wrong with truly enjoying this song. One has always been a favorite because it is such a banger. If you like the guitars in this song, could I recommend a much earlier song of theirs called Four Horsemen ( th-cam.com/video/0AhqeQifPSs/w-d-xo.html ). *SO GOOD*
@@x8nis mustaine wrote the song The Mechanix before joining Metallica. When he joined Metallica they played it as The Mechanix. When he got kicked out they changed the name, slowed down the tempo and added the middle section that sounds like "Sweet Home Alabama"
It's hard to headbanging and watching your reaction to Metaliica at the same time. This whole song is a absolutely masterpiece; second part of the song is phenomenal. Just prepare for more song like this from this almighty band.
Probably my favorite reaction to this song. You can see a new metalhead being born. You were getting into it when the drums picked up but then when the guitar took over your just threw your arms up. Great stuff.
The movie is called “Johnny got his gun”, I’m currently reading the book as that the movie and this song is based off of. If you haven’t read it check it out, it’s super powerful, very dark material.
I think I’ve come to appreciate a lot of songs that while I didn’t hate them, they just weren’t among my top listens because of these videos. Getting a new perspective from people who are listening to a song for the first time is like listening to it for the first time. One is definitely an example of that. Whether it’s you or Lost In Vegas or The Charismatic Voice, I’ve developed a whole new appreciation for this song. So, please keep doing this and don’t be afraid to go further.
It is called double bass drumming. Almost all metal bands do (though there are few who don't) fast double bass drummings . Lars also did it here. This song is pretty old too. That is why the video. This is before Robert Trujilo on bass. Kirk Hammett's solo is a total killer here. Plus the riffs combined with the double bass drums and on top laid James vocals screaming into your face makes this song stand out. The verse , intro and outro, everything is well executed in this song. Yes, there is a movie sequence going on. It is about a soldier who went to war and part of his brain had been removed due to injuries of war. The soldier cannot speak nor see anything. But he is alive (of course in a very terrible form). He uses morse codes to signal the ones who are around. And they are surprised when they know that he has been begging them to kill him as he suffers terribly more by living. You can clearly see it in the video. This speaks on the atrocities of war and the effects it impacts on human kind.
I always enjoy seeing/hearing peoples' reaction to this song, especially when they are able to understand the story within the lyrics. I'll always enjoy the musical content of "One" even though knowing what this song is about, it's difficult to watch the video. I spent a lot of time in the US Army and deployed (as an Infantryman) to Iraq and Afghanistan a total of 4 times. I've lost a really good friend in Kandahar Province to an IED but after the initial phase of grief was relieved that he did not suffer as this young man in the movie/video. In another instance I visited a member of my unit at the hospital in Kandahar Airfield when he had just come out of surgery after losing a leg. The remembrance of him lying in his bed, having not yet come out of his anesthesia, is when the scenes here especially resonate very deeply for me. It was very difficult to see any of my brothers hurt. He is doing very well now, btw. Additionally, the movie within this video was from, and depicts a time many decades ago, when some things are different than they are today. Bisscute, you made the reference of him just wanting to die. For me, I'm in agreement with his wishes. Before I ever deployed I always had made a legal document stating my wishes should I become incapacitated to the extent that I could not function on my own or was left in a vegetative state. A Living WIll, as it is called, was not a thing in the times of the movie here. I understand your body language for the music. As a solider, I appreciate how you understand the meaning of the lyrics. "One" is incredibly deep. Lyrically, It is incredibly dark, and is a song that begs discussion and complete comprehension of its message. You did really well with this! Thank you 👍
Double Bass Drums are a staple in metal since Motörhead started it. Oh and by the way if you havent listened to MOTÖRHEAD then you should know that without Motörhead there would be no Metallica.
The movie in the background is called "Johnny Got His Gun" Set in WW1 of a severely wounded soldier trapped in his mind. I think in some cases where "Mercy Kill" should be committed.
The footage is from the Film adaptation of Johnny got his Gun based on a novella by Dalton Trumbo. The story is a young man serving in World War I is horrifically injured in a artillery barrage(though the song says landmine) in the last day of the war a few hours before the truce happens. He's alive but he lost his sight, his jaw(meaning he cannot speak) most of his face, his ears, his arms and his legz. The doctors perform a experimental surgery and keep him alive as a pretty unethical way to expand scientific knowledge. The man eventually finds a way to communicate with the doctors by shaking his body in Morse code. He spends his life in the nightmare of being trapped in his own mind.
I love you, my dear❤❤ Edit: just finished watching. Dont feel bad for liking this song. It totally rocks even though it's a sad story. Keep banging your beautiful head. It's very therapeutic 😘🇺🇸🇩🇪
In the movie, the black and white parts are real life and the parts in color are the soldier dreaming after being blown up and put in the hospital on life support. In case no one explained everything completely, I will here. I’m not trying to be condescending whatsoever, in case anyone feels that way. It can be really difficult to enjoy the music and also try to focus on all the voice overs and what’s going on with the movie portion of the video. It took me several viewings when this came out to get and understand what was going on and I already knew the song and had figured out how to play it on guitar, so I had listened to it probably hundreds of times before the video came out about 4 months later. The movie parts depict a man who was hit by artillery fire (even though the lyrics say it was a land mine) and he somehow survives. However, doctors amputate both arms, both legs and the damage to his throat, ears and face make it so he is also blind, deaf and has no ability to speak. The doctors think he’s not conscious, that he is essentially brain dead. However, that not the case. He is fully aware and awake, but he can’t tell if he’s awake or sleeping because he can’t see or hear. All he can feel is when they are touching him. It’s a pure hell I can’t even imagine finding myself in. When he figures out how to communicate by bobbing his head to simulate Morse code, he first asks for help, then asks for them to kill him. The nurse tries to kill him, but is stopped by the general before she can. The final, shot of him thinking “SOS….help..me” over and over is exactly how the movie ends. I rented the movie, Johnny Got His Gun, right after this video released in 1989. I watched it in my room, alone. It was over 3 hours long, and was the most depressing movie I have ever seen. Once it was over, I had no energy. The movie drained me so much, emotionally, that I didn’t even want to get up. I turned off the TV and went to sleep even though it was around 4pm, I was 16 at the time.
a bit late, but to answer your question, it was from the 4th album, ...and justice for all (first album after Cliff Burton's death, so of course things changed a bit--they were in a bad mood and trying a new bassist).--the images are from the movie Johnny got his gun (1971, based on a novel from 1939. Hope it helps you. Have a nice day
"One' was a song written for the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" based on a novel written by Dalton Trombo. Set during the Civil War, it concerns a solider badly injured in battle. He had his face destroyed and with it all his physical sensory organs plus being a quadruple amputee. All that was left was a body unable to sense anything, unable to talk. Eventually, he was found to be trying to communicate in Morse code by pounding his head on the pillow, saying "Kill ME!" The book was banned by many schools, Trombo was blacklisted by Hollywood, unable to work under his own name as a scriptwriter. Most of the book is his thoughts running crazed over his past, in a panic. Worth reading but can be hard to get though.
First of all: Super awesome new haircolor! xD And of course: Thank you soo much for your reactions, I always love to see you going into the songs you do, and you really dig deep with listening to the lyrics, enjoy the sound, analyze the videos... Yea this is reaching to two sides with beeing a wild banger and makes you freak out, while the topic (it's fiction but represents the individual casualties of war pretty well) is super sad. Metallica somehow masters this movement on both sides, right? I love this song for soooo long and it's great to see it again with the reaction movements these years! :D Keep up your great work and channel - thank you a lot for beeing there and beeing great! :D
A very deep and powerful song both musically and lyrically that brings up some questions about morals and ethics regarding life, death, war humanity and so on.
Hi Bisscute, I remember when this video came out. It was the first Metallica Video. They were still pretty underground, as in not played on most radio stations. I saw them in a multiband concert in the summer of 1988. There were 5 bands, and they went on 2nd, so that tells you how unknown they still were at that point. My friend gave me the cassette tape for Master of Puppets. about 3 months before the concert. I was into the 80s Metal at the time, and that album blew me away as harder heavier and faster. I ended up buying it 2 more times on cassete because i wore it out. To this day, I still think Master of Puppets is their best album. I Was a fan ever since. about 6 months after the concert I went home and after school was watching viseos on a local music video channel. tThis video came on and when I saw James face, I was extremely excited! Metallica doing videos!! This is a great song and a deep song and video. I am sure others have already commented the movie the scenes were taken from. Thanks for Reacting to this classic Metal song/video.
if you were just reacting to the story and the words (big picture) then you would feel compassion, empathy, sadness. but when you are examining all the components that make up the telling of the story (little picture) you can feel wonderment and awe which make happiness. its the same with art. you can look at a painting depicting death and destruction (big picture) and feel the horror, the pain and the sadness. but looking closer, inspecting how the artist worked (little picture), you can see the fine strokes, the different brush movements and sizes. how they've mixed layers and colours to make shadow and shade. you're left in awe and admiration of the artists talent, and it can leave you feeling happy to have seen such work. you do what most reactors do not, you look at both pictures. you will feel both sides of the coin. don't apologise for it. you always show your understanding of all the elements. feel how the new experience makes you feel
The official video for "One" is in my opinion one of the best videos of all time, because it takes the song to another level. Not that the lyrics leave much room for interpretation, but together with the images it develops that is hard to escape. For me one of the best songs of Metallica. Thanks for your reaction.
One of the first reactors I have seen hit all the important parts of this song..... and a more than pretty girl to boot. Wow. Thank you for this reaction.
What a song! What a video! What a reaction! Goosebumps all over the place! Just incredibly well done and well reacted to! Thanks, Biss, for sharing this with us! 😊👍👍👍
This will be an amazing video.... This song is about a man that lost his arms, legs, eye sight, ability to talk in war and just wants to dye but can’t communicate with anyone as he is just laying there in pain.... it goes much deeper but that’s it in a nut shell. I have seen many people do this song and have no clue what it’s about same goes with master of puppets being about drugs being your master pulling your strings. 😉
This video was met with criticism from fans because at one point, it was considered "selling out" to have a video on MTV by gatekeepers. Also, people hated that the movie scenes overpowered the song itself. I personally still think this is one of the few genuinely creepy metal videos ever done, because the subject matter and the dialog and visuals of the movie are so disturbing
Yep ! The music itself is ont of the moist wonderful pieces of music ever written. And the films is pretty good, and emotionnaly disturbing. But they even empower each other with this video clip.
Loved your reaction so much. One of my fav songs of all time, and the ride the video takes you on is quite intense. I love seeing you experiencing it for the first time! ❤

There are clips from a old film called Johnny Got a Gun. Now this film is about a young man who goes off WW1 (1914 - 1918). In a battle this young man is serious wounded. At the hospital the doctors are forced to remove his arms, legs, and his face. Leaving the young man alive, but trapped in his own body. Unable to communicate with the outside world. Being kept alive by machines, but wanting to die.
BissBeautiful, this is STILL my favorite song reaction from you. You express your feelings so well, especially talking about an act of mercy or a crime. And how torn you were between smiling and enjoying the music, yet still feeling sympathetic for the "soldier" and not sure if you should be enjoying the song as much as you did. Thank you
One of the best Tharsh Metal songs of all time
I truly love seeing your true heart in your reactions, Bisscute. Insightful, yes, but also just purely human. Thank you.
Whiskey in the jar and The prince too
Turn the Page? Whiskey in the Jar?
That was a different band.
Sanitarium, Ride the Lightning, Fade to Black....ALL AMAZING!! Love to see a reaction video to either Bisscute
Metallica lyrics are GOAT..., MoP, Fade to black, One, Disposable Heroes, etc...are emotional masterclass.
Fade to black
There is NO Comparison to hearing this song live in the 4th row in Amherst, MA Back in The early 90's! The pyrotechnics almost melted your face off and the intensity was PURE RAW EMOTION! I WILL NEVER FORGET that Concert!
Great choice. You can never go wrong with Metallica.
if you count out the moneymaker albums load reload, st anger..... they are so wrong..... i stopped listening to metallica because of that crap....
I will never grow tired of watching you ROCK OUT to Metallica!!!! You ROCK!!!!
My brother had a badass stereo back in the 80’s. Metallica came through my wall. Been a fan ever since
I love your honest reactions. *SO GOOD*
lol "theirs" you mean Mustaine's ;)
For a banger song, the “Jamming” version of “One” is great. It doesn’t have all of the movie clips.
@@goodini026 It wasn't just Mustaine
Thank you
The movie is called “Johnny got his gun”, I’m currently reading the book as that the movie and this song is based off of.
The best Metallica song and the best all around Metallica album 🖤
They are amazing ♥
This is the song that brought Metallica into the 'mainstream'. It was the first song of theirs that was played on the radio.
I mean its truly a great song
the music video on the basis of which the music video was made is "Johnny went to war" from 1971 :) I recommend watching
Loved the reaction Bisscute and don't feel the need to justify your enjoyment of the song, I mean we watch to see YOUR reaction.
This is one of the most iconic rock/metal songs ever. (IMHO of course) I can't wait for more of your reviews. :)
More to come I am sure
One of the best metal songs of all time.
Thank you 👍
This song is from their 4th album ...And Justice for All from 1988.
The end of the music video always gets me... because they just forget about him. He is truly left behind to die alone. Trapped.
What’s even more depressing is….that’s exactly how the movie ends.
Double Bass Drums are a staple in metal since Motörhead started it. Oh and by the way if you havent listened to MOTÖRHEAD then you should know that without Motörhead there would be no Metallica.
The film they used in this music video is "Johnny Got His Gun". It was their first music video
The movie in the background is called "Johnny Got His Gun" Set in WW1 of a severely wounded soldier trapped in his mind. I think in some cases where "Mercy Kill" should be committed.
metallica rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you are adorable with great reactions
I love you, my dear❤❤
Edit: just finished watching.
World War I, not the Civil War.
First of all: Super awesome new haircolor! xD
And of course: Thank you soo much for your reactions, I always love to see you going into the songs you do, and you really dig deep with listening to the lyrics, enjoy the sound, analyze the videos... :D
Keep up your great work and channel - thank you a lot for beeing there and beeing great! :D
This is metal.
I got this album when it was released and I still get chills every time the double bass drum starts. EPIC song that will stand the test of time.
Hero of the Day, favorite Metallica song for me. Thanks for the reaction.
Honestly I did not mind the movie scenes it actually help understanding the message , and If you just get into this kind of music its super helpful
Loved your reaction so much. One of my fav songs of all time, and the ride the video takes you on is quite intense. I love seeing you experiencing it for the first time! ❤
Best reaction I've seen to this song so far. She was spot on from the start!
Your name fits you very well. You're absolutely adorable. Lol your accent literally makes me melt inside it's so soothing listening to!
This is my all time favorite song and Metallica is one of my top bands. They have so so many great songs.
Great reaction ❤
You can definitely get excited about the music and still appreciate the meaning of the song.
Metallica is my favourite band
Keep up the great work 🤟❤
Hello bisscute and greetings from Vibørg in Denmark the home town from Lars Ulrich the drummer from Metallica.
Yes he is the best drummer on this planet
Witnessing this song from the second row was literally breathtaking. You could feel each beat compressing your chest.!!
Recommend. Pantera "Cemetery gates" oficial video. 🤘🏻☠️🤘🏻
Bravo Bisscute! Next is Fade to Black. Keep Rocking🤟👍
I've seen so many reactions to this song and I'm always shocked how many can't figure what's happening and as soon as I seen you reacted to it I knew you would understand it you are super intelligent
Thank you , I appreciate it
@@BisscuteReacts very welcome gorgeous
You're a beautiful woman and have such a beautiful, caring soul Biss.
But one thing's for sure ...... this song 100% rocks so no shame enjoying it!
One -> I use in school to explain program-music to the kids -> correct - it's about 'Jonny goes to war' [1st WW] ...Rest-descriptions u'll also find in the internet (it's very sad)...
Спасибо за Металлику! Приятно пересматривать старые любимые видео вместе с тобой! )

I'd love to see you at your first Metallica concert. You'd lose your freaking mind. I've seen them five times since 1989. But the next day you'd have a sore neck from the whiplash from headbanging.🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 Keep it up!
I hope they come to Germany
Saw them live 👍and again this august 2023, can't wait, we will be around 70 k head bangers ✌️
Great reaction, a true headbanger! Keep up the good work loved the video!

& Why Metallica R So Anti-War!!
Very perceptive to notice it sounds to be from a different album. It is, and 10/10 for sensing something as subtle as that!
The movie is called Johnny Got His Gun.
It's about a soldier who loses his face, limbs and vocal chords and is set up to a machine which is keeping him alive, despite his pleas to kill him.
After Metallica used the film in this video, they brought the rights to the film and thus it's one of their most popular and critically acclaimed songs and videos.
Its also a must to hear this songs from the S&M album!!!!!!!!!!
Bisscute likes Metallica 🤓
Thanks for reaction 💕
One is one of my favorite Metallica songs, and its on one of my favorite albums of all time And Justice For All. This is also the band's first music video.
According to the book, he was kept alive for decades for religious reasons and because the medical profession was proud of their abilities.
Oh?❤️
The song is about a WW1 soldier who was hit with a mortar/land mine, his face was blown off, lost his hearing, speech, sight, lost his arms and legs! He absolutely should have died he was "ONE" in a million survivor! The movie this song is based on "Jonny got his gun" is actually free on TH-cam!
