Intro? He threw one killer of a solo there. Although his tone was very muddy at the time. It's a bummer he never had the time to evolve his tone and EQ into smth possibly even heavier and cooler
The "Take a look to the sky just before you die" line is one of my favourite lines in any song, and from Richard looking up to the sky when James says it I'm glad im not the only one who cant help but look up when he says it 😂
A looooot of brilliant decisions were made during production of this song. For example: the echo of James’s voice when he sings the line “Time Marches On”. Even lyrically, very brilliant writing: Stranger Now Are His Eyes to this Mystery, Hears the Silence So Loud. Admittedly, Metallica is not a band I usually listen to, but For Whom the Bell Tolls is in my opinion a perfectly written song. Lyrically and musically.
Metalica's best album. Not a dud on it. This song is the type of song you blast on your car stereo so everyone else can hear it too while your head bashes up against the steering wheel. Great song writing too: "crack of dawn, all is gone, except the will to be" That's some great stuff right there. Fun song. And yes "Aerosmith was much better on blow." I want that on a shirt And yes Angel of Death is based on Josef Mengele. the morbid Angel of Death.one of many twisted individuals in Not-See Germany. Yes he MUST hear Creeping Death and Fight Fire with Fire.
Classic song and cool review. \m/ I've done a book report for my English class on "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Hemingway, never read the book but watch the movie :P Can't wait to see the review for Creeping of Death and Angel of Death, both a classic metal songs and both speaks to my Jewish heritage and are really close to my heart. Angel of Death in particular, my late grandmother RIP is a survivor from the Auschwitz extermination camp. In the lyrics they speak about Auschwitz and Josef Mengele(Angel of Death) who operated in Auschwitz.
My love to your family. I lost most of mine in the holocaust. My grandfather (rip) survived the Invasion of Normandy as a United States soldier. He never spoke of it, but I do know one story (the only thing I think he ever mentioned to my grandmother). I know he was there with his best friend whom at one point during the invasion jumped on a grenade to save my grandfathers life. He died in my grandfathers arms as my grandfather was trying to put his friends intestines back into his body. Rip. You see it movies like Saving Private Ryan, but it was real. I can't even imagine. Without that very brave soul, my mom, my family now, me of course... wouldn't be here today.
The first time I saw Metallica, was the Day on the Green show that you always see when you see Cliff playing this song. I was not expecting them to be good, based on their name I thought they were a hair metal band. The edit/remix of this song that is used during the opening credits of the movie Zombieland is peak filmmaking. Kirk got so good at writing solos for these songs, that the expectations ruined it for everyone. Now he hates writing solos and it's all our fault. He is one of the best ever and IMO way better than his hero MS. Mustaine would have ruined this album, firing him is the best thing Metallica ever did. Search your feelings, you know this to be true. 🤟🧙♂🤟
“What does your shirt say?” “Cattle Decapitation” “Yeah, i guess i could see that after a minute.” “Cool shirt.” “One of my favorites.” “Lighting a cigarette on a dumpster fire.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Gotta love metal band logos ❤🤟
Of course Metallica is required listening, so thank you for doing this one! I'm just still here waiting on Dream Theater to return :( Judson needs to listen to Home by Dream Theater!
That next Metallica video is going to fire! One of my favorites of theirs. It's how I start my Passover Seder each year. 100% true. I love the energy and mix from the Moscow show version; that's the one I most often play; it's a fantastic edit! When I listen to this song "For Whom the Bell Tolls", I prefer the '94 Woodstock version (there's a few on here that are a high quality audio (not video). It's Jason of course, but he really honors Cliff and again... the energy, the hype... gets the blood pumping! This one actually if you're interested. th-cam.com/video/xZ8P8MxDTRs/w-d-xo.html And Speaking of "Angel of Death"; I lost most of my family in the holocaust. A lot of people think "Oh Slayer, they're glorifying it". No. It's an education if you pay attention. It tells the story, and it's important to be reminded of the horrors that happened and the absolute Evil people that exist in this world (then and now) so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
You need to play the live version from 1985's A Day on the Green For whom the bell tolls With Cliff's opening bass solo It will blow his mind clean off his shoulders
My fav album by them... CREEPING DEATH... 😈🤘...trapped under ice... Who made u god to flip the switch of DEATH.. Just harda$$ lyrics from start to finish...
Escape is genuinely so good. It feels a lot like ride the lightning but with some fun tweaks. The stomping and the sirens are so cool. The band hates the song tho, since it was made to please the producers@@vonclod123
I remember going to Cedar Point when the Millennium Force first opened. The lines were long enough that the park actually hired a DJ to play music while people were waiting and unfortunately for everyone there was a gaggle of teenage girls whose place in line put them in front of that DJ for a little over 45 minutes. Nonstop boy band songs until about a minute into the 6th or 7th song the DJ cut the music. "I'm sorry, but I can't play this stuff anymore. The people here deserve a real boy band." On comes For Whom the Bell Tolls and every single male in that line erupted into cheers.
Greatest opening 10 minutes of a song. Saw a cattle decapitation in Pittsburgh I think, opening for Amon amarth. Another band that would be a good one, after Trivium of course. Good seeing you boys on the screen again. I wondered if he would think this song was too simple or not so pretty cool reaction
I saw Cattle open for Gwar many years ago before Brockie's death. As a writer, I couldn't get past their flyers which were misspelled, lol. It read: "Catle Decipitation". 🤣 I wonder if they ever made merch with that mistake? That'd be a gem, lol.
@smftv lol that's great. That's one of my regrets is not getting to see Gwar before Brockie died. I kept waiting for my friend to actually come through for their annual trip to Ohio State, usually right around Halloween. Still regret it
I got to see them 3x with Brockie. Very fortunate there, but I made one crucial mistake. Every time I was front row center stage. The first time I saw them, I was in a metal band (and dressed the part, because that's just how I dressed). I ruined a very expensive pair of leather pants that night! (rip). You should still go if you get the chance, but don't wear anything you like, lol. @@Kickenwing13
There's a throwback in the intro in Kirk's solo to Fairies Wear Boots by Black Sabbath. Also it would be cool to show him a live, more recent version of this one. The 4 Horsemen would be a cool one to start with on Kill Em' All
My favorite Bell Tolls live is from Woodstock '94. Jason does Cliff justice, it's a masterful version! And The Four Horsemen is one of my all time favs. I wish they'd play it live more often (the FULL) version, not the abridged one.
I enjoy it, but I also have to say maybe too much focus on metal. Hit Jetson with some Aphex Twin (some classical overlap there), or Autechre (yikes); or maybe even Max Richter's reinterpretation of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. He might be familiar with that, but I am very interested in his thoughts.
Used to be my favorite song by them. Unfortunately after seeing them live during the Black Album tour I was extremely disappointed with Lars and his lack of performing the rolls/fills which just like Cliffs amazing intro makes the song. At least for me 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻💯
I love this song, but I think I like the Sabaton cover better. The bass is easier to hear, and the vocals fit the theme of the song much better. Although it's missing that iconic bell
Great job, guys, as always, on an iconic tune of theirs, the one that got me into them & utterly hooked me for quite a long while! And, I’m right there with you, Richard, on those first four Metallica albums from the ‘80’s (the first three with Cliff!) were the absolute best of them(.) The Black Album was monumental for the band (and heavy music, too) but after that it was mostly downhill for me, and pretty much the end of my Metallica phase. “Creeping Death” is epic and a great one to go to next. 🤘🏼
Awhile back I started watching you two, I didn’t care for you . I’ve changed, you guys are entertaining so I’m watching, Texas. What state y’all in. You look California. HAHAHAHAHA.
It’s no Hells Bells 🔔, but every other band needed a song like Hells Bells 🔔 , Even Ozzys Bark At The Moon Album has a song that starts off with Bells , Even your Mom knows that Richard !!!! LMAO 😂 ,, Why Do Zombie woman have black eyes ? Because Zombie land has Big ol flailing boobies 😮!
Have you ever considered doing Killswitch Engage? Could be fun because you can do a little 3 episode series on it - one song from the original Jesse Leach era (e.g. My Last Serenade), one from the Howard Jones era (live version of The End of Heartache, or maybe Rose of Sharyn). Howard left the band and Jesse came back, but on the most recent album they recorded a track with both vocalists (The Signal Fire) as a surprise and it was really sick for the fans
My guys...check out The Warning, a Mexican band of three young sisters that are getting huge. They've opened for GnR, Foo Fighters, and Muse. Check out Dust to Dust live at Teatro Metropolitan in Mexico City. The Warning Army will flood your channel!
If you want your bass to scream like a demon being fucked by Cliff Burton, place your distortion pedal BEFORE the wah wah. You may need to open up the wah and adjust the setting of the potentiometer to get into a usable range.
My favourite opening 2 minutes of almost any tune.
INXS is a great band I agree
Just epic
I'm about to second that, but I've gotta think some more before I decide... 😹
one of the masterpieces in Metal music
Now he needs to see the live version of cliff ripping this intro
Day On The Green of course
Yep has to do a reaction to that live version.
Intro? He threw one killer of a solo there. Although his tone was very muddy at the time. It's a bummer he never had the time to evolve his tone and EQ into smth possibly even heavier and cooler

One of my all time favourite lyric lines!
Not easy to impress this dude 😂
I can appreciate that he's actually honest
It’s a great simple song , but yet the lyrics and music make it feel so big, that’s what greatness is all about!!
It's simple yet creates an atmosphere not many songs I've ever heard create, in any genre.
Metalica's best album.
Not a dud on it.
This song is the type of song you blast on your car stereo so everyone else can hear it too while your head bashes up against the steering wheel.
Great song writing too:

Yes he MUST hear Creeping Death and Fight Fire with Fire.
Finally found someone who agrees with me most people say I'm crazy
Agreed...best Metallica album
Yes, the Angel of Death was Mengele. Of course Judson would have WWII trivia in his cortex!
There’s not much he doesn’t know a little bit about. 😂
Classic song and cool review. \m/

finally!
one of the best old metallica songs
“What does your shirt say?”
“Cattle Decapitation”
“Yeah, i guess i could see that after a minute.”
“Cool shirt.”
“One of my favorites.”
“Lighting a cigarette on a dumpster fire.”
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Gotta love metal band logos
❤🤟
Let's do wild side motley crew official video!! 😄such Kool song! For whom the bell tolls was my fav for a long time!! Great pick!
So happy you guys finally got around to this one! Should really do the Symphony version from 99 sometime. Amazing performance
Of course Metallica is required listening, so thank you for doing this one!
I'm just still here waiting on Dream Theater to return :(
Judson needs to listen to Home by Dream Theater!
One of my favorites songs metallica. Live version with old james voice it's brilliant... Now for when The Mars Volta...
11:07 - You should show James Hefield and Kirk Hammett playing the star spangled banner!!
I’m so glad that my favorite logo is official now! 🌀🌀🌀👍👍👍
At least for recent videos.

One of the greatest metal albums of all time this is where I got my start bought it when I was a teenager long live metal bands all of them
Prob one of the only Metallica songs without a true guitar solo…..nevertheless this is in my top 3
You need to play the live version from 1985's
A Day on the Green
For whom the bell tolls
With Cliff's opening bass solo
It will blow his mind clean off his shoulders
Don't think it sinks in !!! That they were like 19 or 20 yrs olds ....True Badasses
My fav album by them... CREEPING DEATH... 😈🤘...trapped under ice... Who made u god to flip the switch of DEATH.. Just harda$$ lyrics from start to finish...
Ya, to me it's their best raw thrash album, how about Escape!!
@@vonclod123 no damn chains can hold me to the ground..deff good stuff
All killer, no filler!! that album.@@TheBFN

Damn why did I never connect the dots between the ending and Hendrix myself? 😢
Nice Cattle Decap shirt, would be interesting how Judson would react to them lol
We’re going to have to make that happen
Gotta do Creeping Death next indeed!
@3:56 *_"Lighting a cigarette on a dumpster fire."_*
That sounds like a metaphor for life if I've ever heard one.
Definitely have to show him the live in Oakland 1985 performance some time. Powerful!
YES!! Creeping Death!! my absolute fav.. might not be your fav but I love it!! xo
Even better, the live version of Moscow 91’
Iced earth - dantes inferno. Did never come as promised 😅

good shout on max richter mate superb that
Hit him with igorrr. He wont like it but its like a car crash where you cannot look away 😂
Show Judson that 85 video at A Day On The Green. He'll see Cliff in all his glory.
I’m going to need you to get him to react to “where owls know my name - Rivers of Nihil”
Killem All and And Justice For All are for me the two best albums Metallica ever made.
Great vid again guys
You should try listening to “Anasthesia (pulling teeth)” by Metallica. It’s a Cliff Burtons bass solo on “Kill em all”.
Creeping death is my favorite Metallica song ever my first impression
What about make him react to Keith Emerson? Emerson, Lake & Palmer is a great choice for him. Creeping Death next? My favourite song of all time!
Let's go!! Creeping Death next!
The title for Hemingway and Metallica are based on John Donne's poem.
“..it tolls for thee.”
Big ups
Rhyacian by The Ocean would be awesome for Judson to analyze.
Hey guys, you guys are the best, lol! From biblical references to Nazi's! Any Metallica song is good, plenty more to come...
Fight fire with fire outro dive bomb is super cool. If you close your eye it feels a bomb is about to drop beside you.
Absolutely, re: linking literature to lyrics. More, please! (I'm a literature nerd, so your talk of Hemingway, yes! 😄)

man, watch famous video of Mgla and Darkside playing! It's insane!
I'd like to hear Judson's take on "The Decline" by NOFX. A little punk is good for the soul.
Can't talk about fascism? Sounds a bit fascist.
+ Aerosmith did have good stuff in the late 80's and 90's.

Please react to Equilibrium - Kurzes Epos!
the bass enhanced version would have been better so he could really hear Cliff's godliness
The Call of Ktulu would be a great one too 😊
Thats been done, check the channel.
Already done
When I see him playing the piano searching, I think, yeah men, is E. Is Metallica.
When are you going to show him some Septicflesh? 😅

unique about Creeping Death is that is from the perspective of the plague. Wild.
