  • The city of Jasper is taking another step towards getting back to normal after a wildfire forced 5,000 residents and 20,000 visitors to flee the town and the national park seven weeks ago.
Starting Friday, tourists are allowed back, with some of the park's trails and day use areas available. Hotels are still not ready to welcome visitors and services across the city are still limited.
“If you plan to travel to Jasper, check what’s open and available before you go,” officials said.
Jasmine King reports from the mountain town, where there are mixed feelings about whether or not the town is truly ready to open for business.

No disrespect to the people who live on leased land in the National Park of Jasper, but everyone is entitled to come and see it and the large majority of the Jasper economy is driven by tourism...

Not the damaged town site. Once there are businesses up and running again, they’ll let us know. Until then, go somewhere else.

@@garywagner2466Gary you should perhaps move if you think you have some type of first claim to leased land in a National Park.
Give your head a shake Gary prehaps even a Wag(ner).

@garywagner2466 I live in Jasper and we don't agree with your attitude. It is a free country. Hotels are opening up to accomodate the tourists that we want to come here and to support the rebuild of the town.

Jasper isn’t a city. About 30% of the town was burned, and the residents all survived. Yes, it was a traumatic event that will take time to heal. Show some respect. When the residents want tourists back, they’ll say so. If you are going to the town site to gawk, go somewhere else in the park. There are 11,228 km² to look at.

Its pretty rude to imply that people not go gawk at Conservatives living in the environment they voted for themselves.
Watching leopards eat faces is plenty reason enough to visit.

I would think that visitors spending money at businesses in Jasper would aid and not hamper recovery efforts and even make it feel more “ normal “.

Do you realize just how unhelpful and even dangerous it is to support conspiracy theories and promote disunity in our country? No matter how terrible you believe the current federal government is, only bad things can come from slandering, badmouthing and otherwise fear mongering. STOP with the ridiculousness and do something HELPFUL!

So sad that right wing gov let this town burn, by not funding any preventative wild fire work.

Both sides are the same party. Stop falling for, and pushing divisive rhetoric. Your brain saw this go down, and the first thought it dumped out was "right vs left". You need help.

PARTS of Jasper were wiped out. Do a google search it will show you. Or watch a video or two of people returning to their homes destroyed. Unless of course you prefer to look entirely stupid in the comment section. If that was your plan, then congratulations, you succeeded.
