- Two IH's tearing up some some no till fields I took on this year. Like every new filed i find, they have been beaned to death for 3+ years. It's a good thing I like corn. Watch out for the excitement mid video. No-till field edges harbor tree roots. This is from the last week of April, and all wet until Mother's Day. The 1086 pulls the White 458 12 pointer, and I borrowed an 8 point Bush hog from my uncle for the 1466.
Nice to see you guys are having fun together using old iron like that. My old iron is orange and I farm about 100 acres with my dad, he’ll be 78 next month and we chisel with an old Krause 9 shank that pulls easy behind the 7030 or sometimes the 190XT. Also I pull another 9 shank Allis Disk chisel behind my 7050. The Allis chisel will go so deep that it will make my dualed up 15,000 pound 7050 spin some times.
We tore out some trees a few years ago along an overgrown fence line and battled roots like you. Hauled a lot of roots and rocks that year.
The disk usually collects the rocks since we don't have a rock box on the tractors.
my dad used to say where ever trees grow corn will grow better!
Well, you don't want to harvest beans while dodging roots and stumps.

hahaha, funny thing. We do have some ground that does look like pasture.... We mowed it for hay today. Video to come.

That was a huge root! I thought you were going to stand that 14 straight up in the air. Looks like the 1086 is working fine since you fixed the transmission.
Soon, you'll see we made the transmission shift better.
wheels on the chisel plow up as high as they will go, chisels as deep as they will go. that's the way I do it. I like your style. nice run, great video!

It was at least 4 inches thick. We disposed of it into the brush. I found a few other roots like that.
Gotta get a ripper or root plow for those roots ;)! Hard on chisel teeth...
Hopefully they roots are trimmed back now. I have torn so much fresh ground this last season...
It might be because now that you have more powerful tractors and dig deeper it's name changed. Not sure what its called 18 inches deep. Breaking up the hard pan for better field drainage and crop growth down to moisture

I'll be renting over 100 acres, 65 of which will be corn.
Back in the 50's we called this a spring toothed harrow not a chisel.
For an update on the 1086 I would reccomend a IH 1566
That's going older. I am looking at 2+2s.

Ok probably 4hrs away. I can stop and look and give you some pictures if you want. I looked on there website and it isn't listed but neither is 90% of the used equipment.

The good part about this field is that it will be corn.
did you pass a cultivator after the chisel? i have similar old fields and was thinking of passing twice the chisel plow then maybe twice a cultivator and broadcast new hay mix seeds
I have never used a cultivator, we tend to have plenty of fresh organic material to deal with.
Boehm Farm . i dont know if a cultivator will deal with fresh organic matter. i was planning on passing a chisel plow on a 30yr old hay field then a few passes of the cultivator but not sure how it will handle the hay residu
mike di ioia if u have a new enough field cultivator it’ll handle the trash. I’d shred it to star with then chisel it. By new enough u need a long frame front to back I got a 1100 Deere that it just better have black dirt or it’ll plug and I got a sunflower 5431 that’ll handle a lot of trash the problem of balling up is in the harrows.

The 1086 is an iconic tractor ,a neighbor of mine had a 1086 and it would outpull his 2745 massey .
I sorta don't want our 1086 to move on. It has lots of hours, but I'll keep it running.
How many times do you chisel a field, after chiswling what do you use, I disc 2 to 3 times, cultivate 2 to 3 times, then spike harrow 2 to 3 times and I still have bunch of grass mogels I can't get rid of, does the chisel get rid of them? I got to find something that does a better job, is the chisel it?
Only chisel once. You should moldboard sod. Chiseling makes a mess in sod.
Throw some duals on that ole 14 and she will run with the wind.
It's a work in progress, I have the hubs and tires, i just need rims.
1066 black stripe was my first tractor that I bought in 1982 and financed it at the bank for 3500. Like the videos.

Was this a hay field or a corn field that just grew grass? And how many horsepower does the two internationals got?
Its was a terribly managed field of soybeans for a few years. Their both about 130 ponies.

you sure are going deep for spring tillage. Don't you think you will dry it out going so deep?
The deeper, the better to break any compaction. I know we haven't advertised it so much, but have you seen everyone else complaining about the rain? Yep, that's us too. Right now, removing moisture is top priority.
I don't think that you necessarily want to remove all of the moisture. Doing any kind of deep tillage in the spring can dry the ground out so much that the ground will be too dry especially when planting a crop. You want moisture in the soil so the seed will be in moist soil so it will germinate.
Trust me, moisture isn't an issue this year. We've had so much rain, that I'm thinking of building a pipeline to send it out west.
Well the ground can get as hard as a rock by going that deep in the spring. Plus you want some moisture reserves for the growing season because if the rain stops for a month you will want to have some to help the crop along.
