Ran a brand new 8640 in 1980. Absolutely loved that tractor and pulled a 10 bottom 800 series international moldboard plow in b range 2 and handled it like a dream on some very steep Eastern Oregon wheat fields
When I was a child I would go with my uncle to a farm about 40 miles from where I lived. He was a tractor mechanic and fixed any of their tractors when he was needed. They had a team of 8630’s and 8640’s. I would get up in the cab and pretend I was driving them. I just loved those big John Deere’s.
We had same plow on our 8630. We use to crank the big crank by the cylinder 10 turns for striking out. Seven /18 and an 86 was my life. Put over 10000 hrs on it till we traded it on 8870
I miss helping farmers to, I use to help local ones back in late 70s and early 80s but I now work at a small stone quarry so I tell everyone ( especially kids) I'm 56 almost 57 and I play with real Tonka toys😆👍😊
I spent my childhood in northern Indiana working on my uncles farm. He raised hogs and at his peak was running 10,000 head. Not the biggest operation, but pretty large. He worked about 18,000 acres and 14,000 was corn just to feed the hogs. Occasionally when it was a good year I can remember him selling 2 or 3 semi loads, but mostly it was ground up for feed. The rest was beans, wheat, some alfalfa and sunflowers. And John Deere was his brand. He had over a dozen tractors, 3 of them being this model. As a ten year old kid I wasn't allowed to run them. I was relegated to a 4440 with a front loader attachment. Running the fields to remove rocks, cleaning up spills, burying dead hogs, pulling grain carts at harvest, that kind of work. But I can remember watching all three John Deere 8640's side by side making short work out of a field. I believe he was pulling 10 bottom plows, but that may not be right. Hard to remember that far back! Nice video. Brought back some really fond memories
Just found this, when I was farming we had a Stiger nice tractor, & used a 9X18 Case moldboard, the smell of fresh turned dirt was always nice. The bank said that we were through farming in 1985
Nice tractor , great save, awesome it belonged to your grandpa, i love the old iron!! Plow looks like its doing a beautiful job!! Good to hear your doing some organic farming!!
Yeah crazy we got to find her and bring her back! Things a ripper! Love the plow . 7 shovels allot more then 5. One of the only organic certified farmers in area. Hard to do. Thanks for support
The tractor looks good! Kinda sounds like it might have an exhaust manifold leak with the slight ticking going on. I had a 8450 that I redid the manifold on and it went away. But other than that she looks great!
Awesome. They definitely are a good pulling work horse. Just pay attention to the motor. Check the oil drain plug after sitting in off-season before starting. If no coolant comes out first yer good, if it does you got troubles.
I feel like these old tractors will make a comeback. Someday all the old combines, plows, disc's and cultivators will be face resurrection. The farmer can work on this equipment. No call to the local dealership needed.
Been following your progress on the 8640. Nice to see reclaiming and repurposing a piece of family history. Looks and sounds good! Greetings from sw manitoba canada.
@@MichiganMarineFarmer you need to brush up your Canuck skills as it's pronounced EH! 🤣🤣🤣 see you have a 4455, do you like it? We run 3 4450s here. 2 power shifts 2wd and 1 quad MFD. Great tractors lots of hrs on them but still go and go.
@@MichiganMarineFarmer had lots of smoke here too. Was very dry in spots here, we managed to get just enough rain to get things thru till about mid Aug. Since then, showery and high humidity, been slow harvesting and haying. We have very little crop mostly pasture and hayland but hay crops are decent to good. The grain guys for the year we had are pleasantly suprised how crops are yielding.
I love to use this tractor in fs22 I wish I could farm in real life. I’ve bene on farms but never worked any fields or anything like that, I plan to hopefully work on one soon though. Wish me luck guys I’m excited to get that experience.
Beautiful! Sad to see plowing is a thing of the past now the last 5-6 years due to severe droughts most of us here in the Balkans switched to subsoiling and it conserves moisture better than the plowed ground goes deeper than the plow and is more wider so at the end of the day we plowed roughly 9 hectares with our tractor its a deere 6920s and with a subsoiler we go around 10,5-11 ha with the same fuel😮
@MichiganMarineFarmer never been in the states and I do NOT wish to buddy we've all seen your policies towards us i have all the respect for you you're a hard working man and a fellow farmer but your government man it's dragging the world to it's end. Best of wishes and stay safe 🙏
Need a piece of rebar to punch around to see if your plowing level, back in the day we had homemade 2 inch by 6 foot levels on plows so you could see everything from the seat.
@@MichiganMarineFarmer if ya get some cylinder collars, you can lift that wheel up nother hole, put 2” collar on cylinder then u have lil up and down from tractor for closing furrows. Also take some weight off the pin in the gauge wheel spread out to back Wheel
I've always wondered how fields have nice neat edges even when they've been initially plowed with a staggered arrangement running diagonally like that. How do they make nice neat edges with plowing implements like that? That tractor is very strong, look after her and get that exhaust manifold leak fixed sooner rather than later! She will do much hard work when it comes to the field work associated with getting a crop grown and ready for harvest! 😁👍👍🚜
It's not down pressure, what you are doing is trying to get the platform leveled up so the boards are at a consistent depth. Nice setup for doing some old school mold board plowing. Sounds like maybe you need to do a valve adjustment on that deere though.
On your strike out your plow should be running more level left to right your furrow wheel was a little shallow, should be pretty good once you start working the land out though, with the furrow wheel in furrow.

Why is it so satisfying watching dirt turn over? That tractor is a beast
Damn thing could pull it idling! Love plow videos. Bunch more being added now
I think that my biggest draw to plowing, dirt completely turned nothing left in top buy new soil

Grandpa would be proud. That 8640 is not even breaking a sweat with those 7 bottoms.
Definitely levels to this game. I love it! not stressing the tractor out to much. Appreciate you watching and commenting
Sounds like it could go up a gear and drop the revs to achieve the same output with less fuel.
Of course it shouldn’t break a sweat, that plow was made for a 100 horse tractor such as an IH 1206. This 8640 should be running 200-225 HP.
We use to pull a 3 bottom plow with a Farmall 400 that was only 40 hp. A 60 hp IH 560 can pull a 4 bottom plow with ease.
back when tractors were tractors, loved it.
Thanks!
That plough is awesome!! That John Deere is getting after it for sure! good job guys!👍💯👊

No auction. found randomly in a guy's tree line. What happened to the 8630?
Love that tractor, it’s still running like a top. It didn’t even know that plow was behind it. Thanks for posting the great video.
Thanks for watching and the nice words!
It really goes! We always use to spray old engine oil/diesel mix on the bottoms and coulters after they polished up.
Good stuff! We just threw some paint on her
I always sprayed mine with silver spray paint after I was done for the year. they didnt rust and it wore off easy the next time I plowed
