    Get a Multimeter here amzn.to/2br8FpE
    Today we are troubleshooting the clicking noise in my smittybilt winch. I went to winch someone out and the solenoid was clicking. I had originally thought there was relays inside that was clicking but that was soon discovered not to be the issue. I've had issue before with this smittybilt winch making clicking noise the first time was a questionable ground I thought which I still don't think was the answer. I was using my multimeter to troubleshoot the clicking noise when I measured a large voltage drop and seen sparks. It seems the solenoid cover needs a good ground. I added another ground and we'll see if this issue comes back if it does then i'll look into replacing the winch solenoid.

    Oh man chasing a electrical issue can drive a sain man nuts. Grounds are a big problem considering we live in the north with the snow and salt. I am chasing a issue with my AC on my van. It is looking like a ground problem too. Problem is the AC relay is controlled via the ground and not the positive. Lucky me. Good Luck Jerry. -John

    Thank you so much for posting! I have that exact same bumper and looking for a replacement, who makes that bumper?

    My new one is doing the same. I know I hooked the short black ground to the wrong location of the winch but figured it would still work being it's metal. I have also blown a couple of fuses. Anyway I'll check for voltage drops thanks.

    What remote control are you using with the XRC8?? Thank You!

    If you think you have grounding problems, try owning a jeep with a fiberglass body. I bought stock in grounding straps. ;)
    If a solenoid has temperature related issues, usually that is a lubrication issue. Of course, most solenoids aren't made to be serviceable, so either replacement or creative repairs are typically the only fix. I have heard of people drilling a small hole in them, spraying something like WD-40 inside, and resealing them.
    The only other way temperature might play a role is an internal insulation or connection problem aggravated by either expansion, contraction, or condensation.
    When I do a winch pull like that, I tend to put the Ebrake on for some resistance.

    I have to say I've been really impressed with my Smittybilt winch. As cheap as they are, mine has never failed me. Got me out of a big mud pit just this weekend! Nice job on the fix, that arching looked crazy.

    I wonder if you're having problems because your bumper has a coating on it. good thing you saw that spark otherwise that could have drove you freaking nuts.. I got a new phone and it's really pissing me off

    Did the new Green (ground) wire get warm at all while in use? I'd look over the winch to bumper and bumper to frame mounts. If it's too much of a bitch to inspect, I'd throw a 4ga ground from Bumper to frame or Batt.

      nope didn't get warm, the motor has it's own ground that is grounded on the rad support that also has a ground running from the battery to it.

    Shittybuilt wenches.lol. Hows the engine holding up in your Jeep? Waiting for you to bite the bullet and rebuilt it.

    hardest pull was a guy who buried his truck and trailer with jet ski in sandy muck. Lots of strain, and I should have done a double line pull. but out he came. felt pretty good about that. don't use the hand held much since I installed in cab controls after watching your video few years back lol

      the in cab winch controls are the best no screwing around

    It's possible that the frame ground at the bumper wasn't good enough. I've had issues with grounding and ground noise when it came to electronics such as radios. I also just recently installed a steering wheel control for my aftermarket radio and the instructions said to use a separate frame ground for it. Ultimately it all gets to the negative side of the battery, but the route matters. The long term results will tell, but I think you might have fixed it. BTW, when you installed the wireless remote, does the receiver module have its own ground?

      @TestDontguess  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The receiver module and in cab winch controls both have their own mods, It is possible that the frame ground wasn't good enough. So far so good time will tell

    I have a gen. 2 smittybuilt, no issues as of yet, but good to know that it might have grounding issues. something to watch for.

    Could you do a teardown/rebuild video on the Smittybilt winch?

    • @TestDontguess
      @TestDontguess  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      that could be possible someday when it fails, the quad winch will most likely get a rebuild before the smittybilt
