  • Following on from the two videos covering the testing/stripdown of the Warn contactor (solenoid), in this video we strip & inspect the 12v DC motor on a Warn ProVantage 4500-s winch. This winch was reported as failed by the owner & they sent it in for diagnosis. So...let's take a look & see why this, almost new, winch failed....
The techniques shown in this video will apply to the vast majority of small to medium size winches made by WARN & other vehicle type winch manufacturers.
    Enjoy

Yo Andy hello from alaska, just wanted to say thank you, you've saved me from buying a new winch, I went to start my machine this spring and while doing my check ups on it I found a winch that only clicked, after about 2 days of searching the net I found your channel, allth9 your vids didn't directly help me with my headache your vids did help me diagnose my problem of a faulty return to contactor wire that was failed inside the wire casing, it had continuity but could not deliver then amperage due to to much resistance, remember to check your wiring harnesses if you have a ghost issue. Good luck hope this comment helps someone else

Hey, just been speaking with Mrs Mechanic over lunch. She was also watching the livestream & noted in one of your comments that you mentioned that you know the family from the Alaska TV Series! Wow, worry I missed that! Apologies, well if you see then around let them know I'm a fan!
      Cheers for now

Great that we could see inside a winch an item many take for granted ! 🤘🇬🇧 Greetings from Teeside

Thanks. They aren't all that complicated so relatively easy to repair once you know what you're looking for :-)

swamped my Grizzly last fall and winch worked to get it out. Did everything needed to restart including all new fluids but never thought about winch again till recently. clicks at the solenoid but motor does nothing. Reviewing this video before i go any further. just wondering if something else to try before diving in???

Nice video! A lot of these smaller units are only rated for a 5% duty cycle. It states in the manual that they are only allowed to pull max load for 45 seconds in a 15 minute period. 45 seconds of pull, then 14 minutes and 15 seconds rest time. If the customer were to pull hard on this thing for 5 full minutes....thats way past its duty cycle rating

Yes, I read the 'table' in the Owners Manual a few weeks ago - crazy limited time of usage, I doubt many people are even aware of this aspect. I'll include it in my next winch video - I have another one to strip & poss repair...

If you know some places, you can have the armature re-wound and buy the brushes and put them in. Plus, bearings are bearings... I found a place that can upgrade a motor and make it more powerful

40:24 Part 3,4 & 5 when you took the cog that acts like a clutch that spring part No 4 was not with the cog.

Nice work, Andy. like your idea of repairing thinks and not throwing them away. 😉 Looking forward for the gearbox vídeo. Would you consider installing an aftermarket new bearing and brush pack as worn only sells the case?

Yes, Definitely, provided the armature is in good order & they seem to be of good quality etc...does seem odd that Warn don't supply a service kit for the motor!

The most common reason this happens is when the user powers out the cable for a long time. Not using the free spool. The motor never gets a chance to cool. Just lazy people who don’t want to walk back and forth or new users who don’t understand how to use a winch!

Hi Simon, yes, I'll maybe take a closer look when I do the final assembly video. Will likely be a few weeks away once the parts turn up :-)
See you on the livestream tomorrow...

Or check the gearbox first..if its kaputt the motor is losing money to by a new one.
