my free spool was hard to pull out fixed it by pulling the gears out and changeing the grease as my one had way to much in it .. once i changed it i can now basicly pull it out with 1 finger haha
Great ingenuity there guys, another option for the future could be a 3D printer, you can print out the custom parts you need using different types of plastic such as TPU for gaskets or ABS for external fittings. You can buy a decent printer for a couple of hundred dollars
Really liked the tear down. Stuff i noticed is often when coils are wet like the solenoids, sometimes it creates croision on the coil, cuasing the coil to ark and short. Might be better off just getting a new box or solenoids or i guess if you got protection before battery it wont matter until it fails. The drainage holes on the box is probably to allow water to exit (ideally), If it was totally sealed, as temperature outside heated up and cooled down air and moisture would slowly make its way into the box though that expansion and construction. With this then comes internal condensation causing water to become trapped and kill the internal elections. It's a common fault on solar lights and stuff. Downside i guess is if you do a river crossing or bog hole and water enters :(
love your work guys. actually pulling apart and fixing instead of just replacing. inside of my cheap aldi winch was the same. i expected much worse after having it submurged multiple times
To fix freespool, pull the gearbox apart, hit it all with degreaser, and put back in new grease, but not so much, and use good quality grease. Not that red stuff, the green waterproof stuff is pretty good, but anything with moly in it will do the best job.
Yeah I second the moly grease. Same stuff you put in the CVs for the high pressure. I rebuilt mine once and didnt have the proper grease and stuck some high temp wheel bearing grease and it was to viscous and a real pain to unspool. Next rebuild some good moly grease and what a world of difference.
My kings winch/solenoid is making the same noise, after watching this vid im going to pull the solenoid apart tomorrow, great video very informative, hopefully that's the only thing wrong with it. Cheers
to make free spool easier pull the gearbox apart, and on the sleeve that the free spool knob moves in and out to engage, ensure the outer sliding surface is clean of any excessive amounts of grease. i like to use som light oil on mine. this should make spooling out easier.
It’s hard to unspool probably because someone has rebuilt it in the past and used wheel bearing grease or something similar that is to heavy. Probably last longer actually as a result.
I recently saw a video from Ed China ( formerly from Wheeler Dealers) using a solution of Vinegar 12 cup and 2 Tbl Sp. of salt to remove and clean copper wires that were suffering from corrosion- then neutralising with a solution of water and Bi-Carb of soda.
Love your videos, we should go on a 4wd trip together. I'm from NSW and rock a mercedes x class 350d edition 1, I'm pretty keen to get it out on the tracks
When ever i install a winch i take the solenoid out of the cover and mount it inside tge engine bay so you can spray it with crc and visually check its condition every time you oven your bonnet
The winch is hard to pull out because it has excellent seals. I had a Tigerz and now a Kings and they both do the same thing. But they both are perfect inside, unlike other name brands which freespool easily but let water in. Just use the motor to spool out.
I have been looking into fairleads. Lock your hubs and Robert Pepper. I have bought a second hand Warn 9000ld. I am going to build a multi controller. But the roller fairlead. The one you're using, you are losing about 300kg. So reading reading. I found polyurethane roller replacement. So I paint the housing a good colour and ads the new rollers. I should only lose about 10% power out of the winch.
Did this and it was fairly clean to start with , didn’t fix it unfortunately Inside of the winch looks similar to yours once opened nice and clean , Put it back together and tried to bump run the winch with some jumper leads off a battery, still no luck. Any suggestions where to go from here
Well done Cobra ya got it goin again. Hey the same to my warn xd9000 winch but the crease was cooked so cleaned it all up and re-greased it. Now it will pull but won't hold the weight on the line it will free spool back instead of holding the tension. Do you think I put the gears in the wrong way or something else?
Hi Boys, great video, but not much of a challenge for you. If you can find another old winch, clean it up and mount to the rear of the patrol. Do the wiring and test it out Regards Alex
If its anything like my grande winch u will find the planetary gears have begun rusting and probably siezing up. Its the beginning of the end of that winch
Yeah agree with this. The planetary gears in the gear box is what causes the heavy spooling... i had the same issue. Clean out the old grease and put in some fresh stuff. I couldnt free spool mine and now i can pull out the rope with one hand.
Great content Fella’s. would recommend smothering all the electrics with dielectric grease as an extra water sealer.👍
My winch has shit itself, thought I'd check TH-cam and here you are fixing the exact same winch. Great video , cheers
Great to see someone actually fix the problem rather than waste the money to replace it. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Robert!!
Great video guys, was very shocked at how clean the guts of the winch was, when you pulled it apart.
Us too!! Very happy hahah!! Cheers mate
Good video boys. Love the old lathe and tools in the workshop. Shows you don't need all the expensive tools to get stuff done.
Thanks bill!! definitely man! all been passed down through the family!
The Grande winch was made by Tigerz11, which was bought out by kings maybe 7-8 years ago. They were quite a good winch for the price.
Great video guys 👍🏼. I'm 15 and can't get a 4WD yet but love watching these types of videos from you guys.
Thanks Zed!! you'll have one soon enough!! cheers mate!
Excellent vid. Informative without all the waffle and without being tedious, well done !!!!
Cheers Swish Swish!! really appreciate it!
great to see young fellas off the playstations and wheeling
This channel is so under rated
Thanks guys so good to know all about fixing my winch.
Well done. Just what I needed to see. Had mine in bits today. Cleaned and regreased. Still clicking.. solonoid tomorrow.
Thanks.
my free spool was hard to pull out fixed it by pulling the gears out and changeing the grease as my one had way to much in it .. once i changed it i can now basicly pull it out with 1 finger haha
excellent fix. I loved the look on the face when he punched the button and the battery wasn't connected. 😂👍

Keep up the good content guys! I’ve been procrastinating servicing my control box and this video prompted me to finally do it. Cheers 🤟🏻
Thanks Gordotay!! yeah mate it's a good feeling having it done and knowing you can rely on it ! :)
love your work guys.
actually pulling apart and fixing instead of just replacing.
inside of my cheap aldi winch was the same. i expected much worse after having it submurged multiple times
Thanks Josh! Yeah definitely! It's the way to go!

I did the same and it free'd up the free spool real nice.
Well done young fella might have to try this now my winch power light is low and stopped working after going through some water
My kings winch/solenoid is making the same noise, after watching this vid im going to pull the solenoid apart tomorrow, great video very informative, hopefully that's the only thing wrong with it. Cheers
Great video Boys

Awesome channel looking forward to seeing you guys grow keep up the good work stay true to your self and your fans don’t let Fame change you all

Another great video.
A practical easy to understand how to on something we all will need to know sooner or later.
Nice stove and lathe by the way
Thanks Bruce!!
Great stuff brother. I will try to fix mine tomorrow.
Awesome mate, howcome someone so young knows so much about fixing stuff. Amazing.
Thanks mate!!

Awesome video guys have just had similar problem today of winch out ok but not in. Im now subscribed keep up the great work. JD

great video guys. very helpful.
Dremel works wonderful for this job
Nice vid young man, avid fan of GQ patrol cheers from the Philippines, keep safe
Thank you!!
When ever i install a winch i take the solenoid out of the cover and mount it inside tge engine bay so you can spray it with crc and visually check its condition every time you oven your bonnet
Good job well done! exactly what I have done in the past.
Thanks Damien!! Yeah it does the trick!
Well done mate good vid mate loved it 👍

Cheers legend, you've inspired me to do mine as its starting to need a tap to get it to winch in haha and its also hard to free spool🙌
ay ! awesome to hear Speedy! cheers mate
I’d keep those hoodie strings well away from that lathe!

Cheers legends, fixed mine today had the same problem 🤟🍺
Awesome to hear Tyron!!! hearing stuff like this makes all the filming worth it, legend !
Aussie Arvos keep the awesome vids boys, love the channel, have notifications on ready for your videos 👌👌
that wire wheel has me dead😂😂
Did this and it was fairly clean to start with , didn’t fix it unfortunately
Inside of the winch looks similar to yours once opened nice and clean ,
Put it back together and tried to bump run the winch with some jumper leads off a battery, still no luck. Any suggestions where to go from here
Handy video.
Shit go!! ‘Fix any winch… but…um…actually nah don’t worry about it’
Well done Cobra ya got it goin again. Hey the same to my warn xd9000 winch but the crease was cooked so cleaned it all up and re-greased it. Now it will pull but won't hold the weight on the line it will free spool back instead of holding the tension. Do you think I put the gears in the wrong way or something else?
yeah mate id say something went worng in the re-assembly process. Sounds like the free-spool/lock twist know isnt engaging properly
Mad dog! Looks like I'll have to pull her apart again ayy hooray haha
Did you work out why the cable was hard to pull out? My winch has been getting harder to spoil out over the years.
Not too sure mate, just could be due to its age, maybe gears binding up or something to do with the grease
Super helpful vid boys!
Thanks dayglo!
Grande was the original super centre winch before tigers 11 before kings
Ahh! Thanks for the info!!
No it wasnt.
Tigerz11 came first, then the grande was the kings first foray after rebranding from tigerz11.
Great Video boys
Cheers Darb!
Ayyye we need vids of gq going bush badly
I know right!! So keen to get out after lockdown!!
Use a bit of dielectric grease on all your solenoid rubber gaskets boys, it will help to keep water out of there 👌
Cheers Andrew!
Cheers boys very helpful
Cheers Adam!!
Hi Boys, great video, but not much of a challenge for you. If you can find another old winch, clean it up and mount to the rear of the patrol. Do the wiring and test it out

hahahhahah i like it !
good gob
good job thanks for the good content
Thanks Zac!!
winch binding due to distorsion when bolting to winch plate shimming required.
If its anything like my grande winch u will find the planetary gears have begun rusting and probably siezing up. Its the beginning of the end of that winch
Tried to buy a sticker and your website is down
Nyyyyyice.
Not sure if anyone commented it but Grande means big in spanish
thanks for the info hahah! makes sense !
@@AussieArvos You're welcome
Good vid. But PPE man! Protect your eyes when you're using a wire wheel!!!
to much grease in the gears causes pressure which makes free spool hard. dont pack the gear box full of grease
next time pull your winch rope out put it in free spool gear and press out on the winch when pulling on the rope out heaps quicker
I’m hoping the hilux I’m getting winch works
Too much grease is why free spools tight
Wash the synthetic rope, or the dirt/sand will break it
Thanks Benjamin! Defs good idea to do this!!
It'll save you a few bucks
that patrol is loud with the bonnet open...
tell me about it HAHAHAH
You didn't show if the rope pulls out any better. Can't see it would as nothing was changed. As below it might have to much grease
Hahah because you dont go extreme offroad 😂
Far out looks like a bucket grandad spec
Get yourself a roller fairlead and save your rope.
Hyundai is one propellers
Dude no! Change the grease in the gear box!! Use a marine grade grease. It will make it run a million times better. Will free spool out way easier too
Yeah agree with this. The planetary gears in the gear box is what causes the heavy spooling... i had the same issue. Clean out the old grease and put in some fresh stuff. I couldnt free spool mine and now i can pull out the rope with one hand.
buy a high quality winch in the first place , when you really need a winch you do not want it to fail. Warn made in the USA
Good advice... I’ll just buy a brand new car then.. numb nuts
