Hello Wranglerstar. I'm a long time watcher and first time commenting. I work as a crew supervisor for an environmental program and many of you're videos have helped me in teaching my crew in basic tool maintenance. I always enjoy coming home from a hard day in the woods and watching a few of your videos.
Replace all 4 relays. Keep 1 onboard for emergencies, and file the other 2 good ones in Grandads treasure chest your cleaning out. Also for when jack is going through the drawers in 25 yrs cleaning out what you've hoarded, a strip of masking tape with winch relay written on it might be useful, although i doubt the winch will still be around.
LOL , on the almost getting stuck . Years ago we went up in the high country in my old van with studs all the way around and limited slip rear end along with two more wheels with chained up snow tires to go sledding . I was driving around a turn around spot and what I thought was packed snow on top of gravel was actually some gravel on top of 2' of snow . Van broke through and was sitting on the frame . Worked up a good sweat and it took two four bye fours to help get me out . Memories ! Have a great Christmas !
You are on a run. Love these simple videos. Humorous everyday things produced with professional realism. If you ever get tired of this homestead gig, make MOVIES. You certainly have the knack.
As a proud Brit (Welshman) I am loving how your sarcastic one liners are getting so much better, will have to make you an Honorary Welshman if you keep this up. That electrical wiring on those lights omg, don't go to bed and leave those switched on. I would love to see the UL test report when they got certified, if they ever did.
It's not specifically 'Moonraker' that is traditional, but in days gone by there was always, always a James Bond film on Boxing Day. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family, from Bonnie Scotland!
@Wranglerstar heads up on the swedish welcome light bulbs -- even good bulbs WILL look dark and you can mistake them for being burned out. it's just what they do... don't toss bulbs simply because they're darkened. i found this out the expensive way. also, if your light is like ours, the 7-bulb light uses different lights than the 5-bulb ones... they look the same, but are not compatible (something like 17V for the 7's vs 23V for the 5's). google "christmas classics 1907-55-na" for the bulbs. there's a place local here that sells them... if you're unable to find bulbs and need some.
I've found that the best source for those odd bulbs is the local garden center, the kind that also sells gifts and home decor. In my area at least it's easier to find and cheaper than online when you factor in shipping. Just be careful that you get the right voltage bulb: With 120v mains, the 7 bulb candelabras take a 17v bulb, whereas the 5 bulb candelabra take a 23v bulb.
I had the same problem with my XD9000i. So during my troubleshooting I ran a jumper ground from battery to the winch housing and it worked in both directions. The factory ground on the housing was corroded inside so I took the motor off then cleaned it with PB Blaster and WD-40 and now it works great.
Working in the woods almost 18yrs now........its cheaper to fix things at home then in the woods. Cheaper for parts and everything......change all the syliniods while your at it sounds good to me. Maybe toss in switches if that fits the bill.......kr make a repair bag for the winch with spare larts and the tools you need
Isn’t it just always the way life works! The day after you throw away a time capsule box worth of old bulbs that you need one! It’s just how life is!! Love the channel, love this current series of fixing and tackling the projects and process of making a proper work shop!
Good video. Two things ring true: 1. I’ve fixed a lot of things by handling them, 2: I’ve imagined wonderful outings that turn out not wonderful. I like the “warts and all” honesty of your channel. Merry Christmas!
Little electrical lesson. When you took off the back of the candelabra, it was obvious the lights were wired in series. One of the wires from the switch went to each end of the candelabra. There was a single wire running between each candle. The main reason they do this is to keep costs down. Each of those bulbs are probably rated for 15-20 volts adding the 7 together gives you a total of 105V-140V load. To hook the lights in parallel would either require having 110V lights, or some sort of transformer to reduce the power to 15V, both would raise the cost to the customer. BTW, I would try the old lights again. You tightened up the candle stick and the lights came on. That indicates the candle was not tight in it's socket, not the bulb being out. Try that before buying anything.
What a productive day for you! I've lost track of how many times I've been able to fix something by taking it apart and putting it back together, without ever figuring out what the real problem was. Sorry about the tree-cutting trip; you all really deserved a nice family outing without the stress.
It would be best to change all the relays because they have all been subjected to same elements and the other 3 will follow suit soon. The candelabra is a series circuit and uses 20 volt bulbs. If you rewire the candelabra in parallel circuit you can then use the more common 120 volt bulbs that are far more available as night light bulbs.
And (#4) from my British friend... he says "...in th past when we were channel restricted, there was little choice in movies, and so on Boxing day you'd end up watching some old film or other...Moonraker, the Great Escape, Lawrance of Arabia..." so there ya go!
what i always do is replace all relays and keep the working ones in the car in case of an emergency. you never know when you'll be in a pickle and that will get you out of a pinch in no time and you'll look like a pro. always ready for the unexpected. im' always the one getting called for help cause i try to keep extra stuff and parts and get myself, friends and family out of trouble. it also feels good to be able to say "yes i can help you"its a very rewarding feeling,
A really good Christmas movie that's kinda hard to get, (but I did get it from Amazon), is "The Christmas Box," with Richard Thomas (John-Boy Walton) & an Elderly & still Regal Maureen O'Hara. As unforgettable as "The Christmas Carol." Well worth the hunt to find it.
There might not be a problem with the bulbs What you found when you twisted that 1 candle stick was a loose connection so those bulbs may very well be good. That candelabra is wired in series so what you do is take one bulb out of the 1 that is plugged in and working and replace it with the individual bulbs from the other ones 1at a time and if the bulb is good the whole candelabra will light up if you find a bed bulb it will not Light up. That is the way we had to check our tree lights When I was a boy.
I'd be careful reversing polarity on a solenoid...I had the same problem on a trim motor on a Yamaha outboard was told to try reversing the positive and negative and it caught on fire... Turns out that particular solenoid was only meant to have polarity one way. When a put the hot wire on the ground it caused resistance through the entire wiring harness. Luckily we killed the fire before it got further but it did almost a thousand in damage and left me stranded a few times before it was finally fixed correctly.... Since then I've never had the nerve to reverse polarity on anything that's broken one way and not t'other.
It's not that we British watch Moonraker on Boxing Day, it's more the fact that a terrestrial TV channel will likely show a Bond movie sometime on the 26th. It's often on late afternoon when everyone is still recovering from lunch so maybe it's a captive audience thing 😜
Fun fact boxing day was originally an Irish tradition but it was renamed boxing day as all the left over Christmas food would be put in boxes and given to the homeless on the 26th of December
Yes with a 8ft box extend cab f250 many many times i cant turn around on logging roads. Practice up your reversing skills cody. I have reversed down a wash out and around a corner before. Many many times there is just no room to turn around. Lucky the only damage i have got is torn off mudflaps and one cracked valve stem from my off road adventures in my 92 f250 diesel with a slide in camper in the box in the BC rocky mountians.
Ive had those traps be quite successful but I had a larger roller. I also had almost the entire thing covered im peanut butter with the bucket and ramp against a wall, seems to be a more natural place to travel for them.
The Hakkapeliitta R2's are phenomenal tires. I have them on a 2015 Honda Accord, and it's totally transformed the car. Granted they weren't easy for me to source but well worth the time and investment.
My first car was a 1975 MGB convertible. It was a lot of things. Reliable was not one of them. haha. Even with the issues, I still loved it and continue to love British cars.
I was looking for a midget and found a '79 Spitfire. I don't regret it, I had a LOT of fun in that car. And a new transmission, new top, new carb, new header...When the fuel pump went south on the ride home after buying it the bells should have started going off...But hey, when you're 16. I learned a lot about cars with that one.
Hello Wranglestar, greetings from Czech Republic. Love your show, watch it everytime. I think you are ingenious with your repairs. Continue and have a good time as well. Thanks for that you are sharing your videos with us. :)
i don't know why but this was one of the best videos I've seen on youtube! Thank you again Cody! Season's greetings from a fellow homesteader from snowy Finland!
Not Moonraker necessarily, but there's usually a James bond film on tv on Christmas/Boxing day. More appropriately Die Hard is usually on in the run upto Christmas!
Cody, I was not offended. I do agree about MG to some extent. I would not say Moonraker on boxing day is a national tradition but I do watch James bond during the holiday season.
I love this style of video where you are fixing stuff. I know I need to learn more about electricity and the fact that you dont know much more than me is kinda nice
Moonraker is kinda true. It used to be that every christmas, normally boxing day; a bond film would be on tv. Any of the pre-Dalton films though rather than specifically moonraker :) Sadly not such a tradition these days. Don't think I've seen a Bond film on the schedule on boxing day for years.
I think you have been lead astray, as far as I know watching Moonraker on Boxing Day isn't a tradition!! You have inspired me to sort out my workshop, somewhat smaller than yours so shouldn't take too long. Another habit I have got into is sharpening my chainsaw, re fueling etc before putting away.
Love the A Team effort. That switch is a knock off of noma OUTDOOR garden lighting. looks like parallel wiring, not series. Your problem was that little prong on the switch, sometimes they jostle away from the wire, when you took it off and put it back on you fixed the connection.

Watching moonraker on boxing day (I'm British) I would say is true but it's basically any bond film would qualify. Plus I've always used Sinkers bars for pest control purposes with great success.
I’d put my money on the problem lies inside the individual sockets over time the small contact in the center of the light socket is pushed down over many years constantly having pressure on it if you replace the bulb there is a chance that the new one could be shorter by a fraction. Under normal circumstances the contact is springy and will push up and make contact. But when worn out it won’t. Easy fix is with the light unplugged take a small screwdriver and gently pry up raising that contact. With your particular light when one isn’t making contact it opens the circuit and leaves you in the dark. I hope this helps
That's actually how many of those dial switches work. generally speaking, they typically aren't used for anything with a lot of power going through it.
Its so nice to see someone actually fix something. We live in such a disposable culture................99% of people would have thrown it away, and found a new plastic one on amazon.
Been watching your videos for over a year now and always look forward to seeing you uploaded a new one I have even gotten my fiance to start watching and give me the green light to start out jurney to get a place in the north west thank you keep it up
Yea if a circuit is wired in parallel then one bulb can go out and the rest will stay lit, that candelabra is wired in series like a daisy chain therefore if one component in the chain goes bad the circuit is broken ie won't work
Hi cody, i'm English and your MG comment is spot on but we can wire a plug😁. The moonraker thing is correct but it's just that they put it on EVERY YEAR on the tv. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Love these mystery fix videos. Good job jumping solenoid - common sense diagnosis. Amazing that solenoids last about 10 years clicked on/off hundreds times/day in summer months on golf carts.
It’s probably a threaded ground. They oxidize a bit and just need a little cleaning. Real similar to a flashlight. Wise advise is always check the ground first
Oh boy I was watching from behind the sofa when you were fault find the mains issues. Thought is was going to be you lighting up like a Christmas tree. RE Gold-finger. For some reason the Television on Christmas day in Britain is normally pretty dire, probably because most people are playing charades eating and drinking way too much instead, but there is always an old classic film on. It always used to be the "Great Escape" a classic WW II POW escape film. Every year. I think they wore out that copy. Its like a tradition. There is only so much excitement you can handle in a day
Napa sells a relay thatch a generic replacement, a continuations use duty cycle solenoid if you ever need it in a pinch, they also work great on tractors & even airplanes.
It's nice when a manufacturer chimes in. I've found that the electrics on Warn's are kinda... ehh. I've had to replace those relays so many times it's crazy. When one goes, the rest aren't too far behind. I replace all of them when one goes.
Your welcome. For top gear that is. Do you watch the grand tour on amazon prime it’s top gear plus a big budget. Yes you are so right our cars are fantastic. Fantastically bad that is. And not always moon raker but a James Bond film is always on at some point at Christmas. Would love some more tree/logging/chainsaw content by the way. How’s the wood processor doing. Love the vids thank you from England.
There are three wires going in to the top of the motor (and one ground on the bottom). The furthest wire to the right (the A terminal) is always negative. The two wires on the left (F1 and F2), that are close to each other, are either positive or negative, they change polarity when changing direction. F1 and F2 were the wires you should have switched in your test (now you switched F2 with A). ;) But good thing you found the broken relay! Image: ibb.co/ZVWr41b
I would still replace the brushes on the winch motor, or at least look at them. Do a full tune up while you have it apart. I'm also worried about the exposed battery wire behind the passenger seat there. What if something grounds it? Cheers, George

I work as a crew supervisor for an environmental program and many of you're videos have helped me in teaching my crew in basic tool maintenance. I would say it even better when the winch company can sell you replaceable parts vs having to junk it
Where possible it’s always better to repair than replace
i guess I am quite randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to watch newly released movies online ?
Replace all 4 relays. Keep 1 onboard for emergencies, and file the other 2 good ones in Grandads treasure chest your cleaning out. glad you got your winch fixed. that one moment where you find out what the mystery problem is sometimes "just gives you the fizz"
You are on a run. Love these simple videos. Humorous everyday things produced with professional realism. If you ever get tired of this homestead gig, make MOVIES. You certainly have the knack.
I love the fact the you mentioned techniques from the comments and tested them. Excellent video!

FYI for Warn, if I ever need a winch you're my first stop before anyone else.

#3! Is bad! Not making internal contact. When you change it, cut open the old one to see the failure up close. Nice video again sir.

I had this exact problem and the same difficulties and after a bit of negotiation Warn fixed it free and out of warranty. Darn happy.

It's so strange that you mentioned "Moonraker", just before watching this video I watched one about Richard Kiel as Jaws.
Well done finding the faulty relay and it’s a good idea to replace all of them.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Good stuff. Back to some basics. Many will appreciate that.
haha the sweetloaf dropped the peppercorn on her jumper, she looked so confused.
I've totally done that kind of winter backing.

Merry Christmas Cody and Family!
Hello Wranglestar, greetings from Czech Republic. Love your show, watch it everytime. I think you are ingenious with your repairs. Continue and have a good time as well. Thanks for that you are sharing your videos with us. :)

Is there a video of you using all of the features on the van while on an outing? If not I'd love to see it. Keep up the great work!
A merry Christmas to you and your family, all the way from Portugal!
These multiple project videos are high speed. I like it.
The knife reveal was actually hilarious, that didnt last long!

Love the A Team effort. That switch is a knock off of noma OUTDOOR garden lighting. looks like parallel wiring, not series. Your problem was that little prong on the switch, sometimes they jostle away from the wire, when you took it off and put it back on you fixed the connection.
sounds like the drive alone was video worthy. keep it safe out there and happy holidays to your family!
Merry Christmas Wranglerstar Family 🎄
If your into James May he has a program which I think you would enjoy called The reassembler, he basically puts things back together, motorcycle, guitar etc, but he explains how it all works.

Have a Merry Christmas, and thank you for the always enjoyable content.
The honesty of I'm not really sure what I'm doing here in these is amazing 😂
Even a not so good adventure can give us good memories. Merry Christmas
That baby has such an impressive palette! Sourkraut, pepper corns!
Been watching your videos for over a year now and always look forward to seeing you uploaded a new one I have even gotten my fiance to start watching and give me the green light to start out jurney to get a place in the north west thank you keep it up

Christopher McNamee 9 of 10 of the candelabra in Sweden is wired in series 🙂
Christopher McNamee i learnt that in yr7 what are you learning in the US at ah 40
I learnt when I was in school to
Not sure about Moonraker specifically but classic bond is a great boxing day tradition.
Yep! Number 3 is faulty! It should indicate close to 0 like other ones!
Good explanation my friend of you’re work
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM OREGON!!🎄
Hi cody, i'm English and your MG comment is spot on but we can wire a plug😁. The moonraker thing is correct but it's just that they put it on EVERY YEAR on the tv. Merry Christmas to you and your family

Really enjoying these recent vids. Thank you and Merry Christmas
Great video, the sweet loaf is growing so fast! love her ❤️
@28:09 Heartracer! Long time no seeing you!
I also love the old top gear, btw go check out the Grand Tour if you hadn't already!
the serial way of hooking up these lights, rather than in parallel, is a cost saving decision... saves on copper wiring.
It’s probably a threaded ground. They oxidize a bit and just need a little cleaning. Real similar to a flashlight. Wise advise is always check the ground first
Ahhh I love when Wranglerstar cuddles with stuff out of his skill levels, I enjoy the videos keep up the good work Cody!
We only watch it because it's on TV every year.
16" Of wet snow Turns you into the grinch!

We watched that movie last week. an A+ movie for everyone.
Your how to fix-it videos are always my favorite to watch
Adventsljusstake = Candelabra, Glad 4:e advent nu på söndag till dig och din familj!
Loving the repair videos.
quick tip . thread the nut back on the bolt one turn then pull the socket off the stuck nut .
I would still replace the brushes on the winch motor, or at least look at them. Do a full tune up while you have it apart. I'm also worried about the exposed battery wire behind the passenger seat there. What if something grounds it? Cheers, George
