Warning About SuperWinch

- Warning! Superwinch, the company, is currently being sold. Their customer service was not even terrible because it's none existent. I would not buy another SuperWinch product again. Go buy a Warn or Comeup winch. I personally would have a very hard time justifying buying anything from the company again.
I hope this small heads up helps someone out. Go buy a Warn or a Comeup winch and save your self this headache! - บันเทิง
You have a Superwinch with an end mounted brake that doesn't heat soak the drum. The best winch for synthetic rope. End mounted brakes don't melt synthetic rope. Warn (and other) winches with drum mounted brakes can melt synthetic rope. I haven't used steel rope in 20 years on a Superwinch. I use 8mm (5/16") Amsteel Blue and only use two complete wraps on the drum. You don't need any more than that if you have synthetic rope extensions. The beauty of synthetic is that it is far safer in handling. If it does break you can splice it in the field. It is far lighter and you can sling it in your Jeep through the window if you have to move out of the way quickly and cannot respool the rope straight away. You can also shorten the rope as you set your rigging using daisy chain or other types of marine rigging techniques. I don't think I will ever use steel rope again.
I agree with the use of synthetic rope. No arguments here. However when I called SuperWinch they informed me that the drum on this winch could not handle the pressure that synthetic rope puts on the drum. They clam the drum on my model is to thin and I would have buy a new winch or attempt to find a drum they make for the synthetic version of this winch.
@@EmbarkWithMark Did they mention which part of the drum? The drum core or the end plates? A lot of winches have thin end plates that can bell out if you allow the synthetic winch rope to bunch up at the sides. This is just plain bad winching technique, you should always set your rigging to wind the rope in at 90 degrees to the drum. Steel rope can do the same damage to the drum, but the damage to the steel rope is usually noticeable far sooner. I guess two half moon stiffening plates could be cut from 3/16" sheet on a CNC plasma table and welded to the drum end plates to reinforce them. The welded seams on the drum face would need to be filed perfectly smooth to avoid snagging the rope.
@@vincentbentley1079 The exact phrasing was "Synthetic rope squeezes harder than steel cable, and when a load is applied the drum can be crushed". I thought about this and some stiffening plates could be welded on and then cleaned up to provide a smooth finished. This is one way to fix the problem.
@@EmbarkWithMark That's really interesting that Superwinch have said that. I have seen plenty of drums with the core scored up from cinching wire rope but none (yet) damaged by being crushed by synthetic rope. I have seen a few with synthetic ropes melted flat and stuck to the drum on winches with the brake in the drum. The word 'crushing' makes me think they are more concerned about the core of the drum collapsing. One way of preventing this could be by inserting a snug fitting 1/8" wall tube inside the drum, like sleeving a D30 axle.
I have three of these and they've been great. The early models with the black drums were not rated for synthetic line. Later models with the grey drum can use synthetic. Mine are all upgraded to 3/8 Amsteel Blue, 100 feet, and I usually use a snatch block or back out far enough so as to not overload the drum. All connections and fasteners need to be checked for tightness as all mine were loose from the factory. The plug for the remote is cheap as is the solenoid cover so it breaks easily. Mine are all converted to wireless remote now to solve this problem. It's a low end winch and I knew that when I purchased it. I'd probably still buy another, but the upgrades and pre install torqueing are, imho, necessary to make it a reliable product
Did you seat the cable before you used it? Always prestress the cable a few times prior to putting in use. This gives you max strength and minimizes the damage you encountered. Did they ship the winch to you with those pinches?
So the cable has been rewrapped multiple times under light tension. This wasn’t the first the winch had been put to work for recovery. They did not ship the cable to me pinched.
I take partial blame in the pinching of the cable. But I can’t help to think that the failing rollers also contributed to the issue. I also compared the cable Superwinch used on this winch to that of a Warn. The quality is definitely different. So that also may play a roll in it. I do have to remind myself that this is a “budget winch” compared to some other models, but still.
ive got two superwinch talons . one is 11 years old and the other is 12 . i have used the hell out of both . one is on a dedicated off road XJ and the other is on my yj . these have performed in water , mud , and 30 degrees below zero with zero issues ever . i have recovered myself and others countless times . i would put mine against any other brand in the same rating class all day long. mine have synthetic rope and even those are the originals .
I know of a few who have the older SuperWinch Talon too, and it appears to be a fantastic winch. ComeUp has peaked my curiosity. When it comes to SuperWinch, I know Westin bought them. I wonder how that has affected the quality of the product, if it has at all.
Around this time your video was posted Superwinch got sold to Westin Automotive...maybe that transition contributed to the poor support?
That was certainly part of it.
Most manufacturers that I've dealt with, especially when it comes to off road/Jeep parts, sell exclusively through vendors. The reason for this is so that they don't have to maintain a retail tax license and certificate, and also so that they can focus on manufacturing while somebody else handles the time and expense of individual retail customer relations. In the end, it's a much more streamlined and efficient business model. The brief response to your email was probably all the information that poor employee had. When the last company I worked for that changed hands, everyone who knew it was happening was fairly in the dark until it was over and some employees didn't even know until the header on their paychecks changed. I have had one manufacturer go above and beyond and offer to ship me a part at no cost because they couldn't sell it to me directly for the very reason I mentioned above, but there were special circumstances involved on both ends- though I must say that it did give me a warm and rosy feeling to get that kind of service : )
I fully agree! I don’t have any hatred towards any of the employees I spoke with. My biggest problem was even the company was not providing there venders with parts. But I still use the winch to this day and it’s still functioning.
@@EmbarkWithMark Well either way, make sure you give it a dirty look every now and then, just so it knows you're watching ; )
K Kofler 😂👍
Thanks for the info. I have a 2000lbs Super winch on my atv. I see from your video you had trouble with Superwinch. My winch works fine but not sure if it's the rocker switch or the relay. It goes in but I have to switch the cables to make it go our. I heard they had trouble with the switches. For the money I can buy a Champion 2000lbs winch for under $90.00 dollars.
Thanks for your testimony
Your welcome!
Thank you for this video, I was just looking at buying one of these winches. I will stay far away from this company.
Glad I could help
Sup guys, Jeremy Renner here.....
Hahaha! You would not believe how much I get that in person.
Great video. A suggestion the term you’re looking for is, total cost of ownership.
The money, time and resources, spent to sustain a business decision.
I remember when super winch/ mile marker and a few other winch manufacturers were competing for Warn / winch market.
I know that warn products are expensive but their customers seem very satisfied.
For me, your experience has shown me No difference between superwinch and harbor freight, as it relates to customer support after the sale.
I’ll add warn and synthetic lines to my wish list.
Finally a suggestion, reconsider ditching superwinch. You have sunken costs invested in a winch but if any company does not consider their customers after the sale, what’s the value in their brand?
Good luck.
Thank you! Yes, I fully agree with what you have said. SuperWinch to me is no better than harbor freight or Smittybilt winches. Honestly, I might have received better support from them.
In regards to Warn. I have been researching and the only two winches I will consider replacing this one with is either Warn or Comeup. Both very good in my eyes with great customer support that I have seen first hand.
Yes, I am considering writing my sunken cost as a learning experience and buy a reputable brand who has value in my eyes as a consumer.
Embark With Mark I’ll check comeup? Frankly never heard of them. My winch choice will probably be warn 10k w/synthetic rope.
Your pinched winch line video issue cinched it. Thanks again for a great video and response.
@@josemdiaz6432 They seem to have some good products and apparently are a very established company. However, I fully agree. Warn and a synthetic line is a combination that is really hard to beat. One day I'll make the move as well. You are very welcome! Thank you for participating, and I am glad this was of use to you.
ypu might want to understand the business model of a manufacturer using an agent/distributor model. Not a shortcoming of Superwinch. They do wat they do best...manufacture. Not sell
You maybe right. That is something I don’t typically think about as an end user.
Am looking for a new winch. From your horror story you totally sold me on not looking at the superwinch. Minor parts but no support at all.
I keep looking at ComeUp, they have features that are hard to ignore, but somehow I find myself circling back to Warn.
@@EmbarkWithMark I was thinking about trying the engo winch.
@@EmbarkWithMark I do like warn but right now I got cheap china warn money not the good American ones
I think you need more education on winches.
Of course! I think most everyone could learn more about somethings. I was just trying to provide helpful info about a company. Out of curiosity, what info do you disagree with?
Sounds like you were caught in the middle of the time the company was going out of business. Westin Automotive stepped in and bought out Superwinch and acquired the rights. Superwinch is now in San Dimas Ca. They’re back and stronger and better than ever. This new ownership is exactly what the brand needed.
I got the 12.5i from a few years ago. Been great till now, it's spooling in with no remote input, no remote even plugged in. Bent my bumper a bit an killed my battery. Hope motors ok.
Was 800 when I bought it, they're 1400 now
Wow, I have herd of something like this happening with lesser brands. Makes me want to install a physical disconnect on it. Hopefully the fix is not too difficult.
@@EmbarkWithMark honestly thought about getting a new winch. This winch doesn't fit my bumper like it should. Too tall. Had to remove the control box off the top an zip tie it to the inside of the grill.
Thinking maybe a badlands apex. Looks pretty solid from what I've seen but have to check some reviews. Comes with a batt. Disco I think.

I know a few people who have badlands winches. They seem to be hit or miss on the quality. I am personally considering moving to a ComeUp or a Warn. The ComeUp winch is very appealing to me. It has some specs that are hard for me to ignore.
@@EmbarkWithMark I hear ya. But with what comes with the apex for the money you really can't beat it. And my winch being oow and now 1400 new. Time to make a change.
I don't do any serious off raiding so the apex should be ok
You just sold me on not to purchase from the company! those rollers should never wear out, NEVER! They are using substandard parts, no question about it. I'll likely send them a note regarding this post.
Looks and sounds like your not respecting the winch
Piss poor service n parts support really piss me off!. I just hope poor operators go under. It's Warn, Kingone, Runva who gives good support.
I totally agree! I’ve never herd of kingone, and Runva. I’ll have to check them out.

@@EmbarkWithMark Kingone and Runva are kicking Warn and Superwinch hear in New Zealand proving to be very efficient. Competition users prefer to use them as Warns fail big. There's heaps of Warns sold here all pulled apart and castings broken etc.
Dang youre hard on shit.
Sometimes things happen, and stuff breaks. I will say that I was not easy on this winch. I'll give it credit for still running, and I am still using it to this day.
Get a badlands 12000
I’d rather go with a ComeUp or Warn.
