Hi Lewis! To be honest I don’t use mortises much because I’ve had issues with not getting the dovetail quite right and they break out on me. But I’m improving that part and do like the way they look when used as a foot so will be utilizing them more going forward

A very pretty bowl. I made one with similar grain pattern from very old wood a neighbor gave me. Beautiful! I just got some new carbide inserts today from amazon. I had been sharpening them with diamond cards until I hit a screw and chipped one.

Hi Chris, thanks for watching! Yes, I know all about the glove police but I’ve found it to be a bit of a necessity for me. Any of the gloves I wear are very close-fitting and I try to know where all my body parts are at all times so I feel relatively comfortable wearing them. This one is a softball batting glove and works out really nicely 😊

Hi there, thanks for stopping by! I have what I think is a negative rake carbide cutter from Simple Woodturning Tools - it is cupped and is used for shear scraping. I just haven’t had much luck lately with it - can’t find the sweet spot to cut. I’ll have to get a hold of them and find out if there’s something I’m not doing right - I’ve not used that one much so the cutter should not be dull. So many tools, so little money to go around! 😂
@@LisaRamlow so Simple wood tools arent selling a proper Negative rake cutter, because Easy Wood Tools own the Patent on this, reason i know this is because EWT are a supporter of my Channel so i get a lot of inside information direct from them...... regards to using it right, you hold the tool parallel to the floor and completely flat, no need to twist or rotate the tool in any way..... another reason for huge chip out or shattering could be the resin mix was slightly off in some way...... on a side note, im just about to record my podcast for the week (Makers International Podcast) And you are going to be my weekly Shoutout, i found your channel today and you do awesome work :)
Oh hey thanks for the shoutout, that’s so awesome! I’m still working on the reasons I’m dealing with the resin shattering and chipping. I asked Alumilite and they said temperature can play a big part so I tried to address that and the working time on this project-turned the shop heat up to 68, warmed the blank and mold and the pressure pot for that matter, and was well within the working time. I measure by weight in grams and mix thoroughly making sure to scrape the bottom & sides so I just dunno. But I’ll keep at it and just make it work somehow! I’ll keep the EWT in mind - I find I prefer the traditional tools to the carbides most of the time but there are certainly uses for both. I guess what I have is marketed as a shear scraper, and can be rotated (it has a round shaft) to be more or less aggressive. I just haven’t played with it much. Thanks for the advice, I’ll check out your channel!

I love the scraper mostly when my carbides need a new blade and leaves all irregular choppy holes on the wood and/or the epoxy. You managed to persevere with the rough carbide and the bowl gadget or was it the spindle gauge and the final turnout a great conversation piece.
Thank you Sylvie, the resin chipping out is a pain for sure. I had no idea that a negative rake carbide cutter would make all the difference - I’ve not had a single chip or shatter since I switched to that for resin. Next resin piece I do I’ll show a comparison between a freshly sharpened gouge and the negative rake carbide. It’s totally a game changer for resin work. And I didn’t know this until a few videos ago, but carbide cutters can be sharpened quickly and easily on a diamond card. I’m going to do a Workshop Wednesday of sharpening mine here soon but there are lots of videos out there now that show you how to do it. Thanks for watching 😊

Oh yes of course, an oak burl in the turkey roaster, that's exactly what should..... actually thats pretty genius. I've got a little toaster oven that I use for smaller pieces, but Ive had pretty much that same roaster sitting down in my basement for 14 years.

You mentioned needing to get new carbides.... have you had much experience with sharpening them? I find it works pretty well on mine, and I can go four or five sharpenings before I need a new blade.
Thanks Eric! I’ve heard of Frenchies from Kim Tippin and will try it. I’ve made new shellac with flakes and will probably make a new batch of OBs and one of Frenchies to see what the differences might be.
Hey Lisa Beautiful bowl very good narrating. A machinist tip... if your carbide is getting dull. spray a little mixture of water & Joy dish soap on a diamond Stone or card and turn carbide cutting edge down and circle the stone in a figure 8 motion, not a circular motion. This will insure even distribution of pressure on carbide and will sharpen it. This will save you a ton of money. (hopefully). I look forward to your next video.
@@LisaRamlow I think U can get a card at Woodcraft for appx 15bucks. Also I made an error when i said Joy. I meant Dawn dishsoap, it really doesn't matter just whatever you have mix a little in a squirt bottle & use it. Happy turning.

Hi there! The scraper I was using is a cheap Benjamin’s Best bowl scraper that I made into a negative rake by grinding a bevel on the top side. To make shellac, I purchased shellac flakes and dissolved them in denatured alcohol. There are different ratios of flakes to alcohol depending on what you want to do with it. I’m mostly using shellac as a sanding sealer so I’m using a 1# cut, and I mix a small amount up at a time as it can go “bad” if left for too long. I used 1oz flakes to 8oz DNA and that’s a 1# cut. From watching lots of resin projects, I wonder if you need to switch brands. Nick Zammeti is fearless about fixing his resin projects on the fly. He uses a brand I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else use. The guy at Blacktail Studios really knows his resin. He seems to be devoted to helping his viewers. I know he’d be willing to give you some suggestions. Maybe he could be a resource? I feel like you & Kim Tippin Wood Working are on the same wavelength about making your own products. I am definitely considering other brands of resin but since I literally just opened that gallon kit of Alumilite I’ll middle through til it’s gone. Stuff’s too expensive to give up on. I follow Kim and Nick and recently watched the guy from Blacktail so we are on the same page there! Jake Thompson also has some good videos on resin, and I’ve used Liquid Diamonds also though I can’t remember which projects were which anymore. My shop is an incredibly well insulated pole barn on a concrete slab so it stays really cool and a bit humid there in the summer. Now that the weather is starting to change I’ll be turning the furnace back on and I’ll do some experimenting with the Alumilite-maybe that’ll help someone else 😊 How are you doing out there? Are you far enough from the fires?

Fantastic bowl Lisa! Gorgeous grain! Congratulations on 1000 subscribers. Hey a little hint about the carbide cutters. You can sharpen them on a stone, maybe 400 grit and a dab of WD40. Put it face down and go round and round and back and forth. You don't need a high priced sharpening system for that. Check out,"the Wood Whirler" for videos on sharpening the carbide cutters. Hi Paige, thanks for stopping by! You’re the third person who has mentioned sharpening the carbide cutters so I’ll have to give it a shot. I have a couple of decent water stones and I also have a super-slow speed for carving tools. It’s a homemade thing I bought from a fellow carver and it’s pretty cool - he converted an old shiatsu foot massage thing into a sharpener. It has flat plates - a 600grit diamond, a 1200grit diamond, and a leather stropping disk/plate. There are two shafts that rotate in opposite directions and they turn super slow so as not to burn the temper off carving tools. I bet that would work, even if I don’t turn it on. I’ve been using it to touch up skews and stuff. 🤔
I know nothing about epoxy or turning wood but I wondered what would happen if you mixed the epoxy in a bowel and THEN put the burl into the epoxy. Would that have worked?
Hi Edith thanks for watching. Your idea does work, and in fact I ended up doing that a little bit with this one. The trickiest bit about casting wood in resin is that the wood floats so you either have to hot glue it to the bottom of the mold or put a non-stick barrier under a weight or something heavy to hold the wood in the mold. I started this one by putting the burl blank in the bowl and holding it down while pouring some resin around the edges, hoping to fill it from the bottom. That wasn’t quite working so I pulled the burl out, poured some resin in the bottom of the bowl, then put the wood blank back in the bowl and pushed it down into the resin. I think I just didn’t get it quite even, and I probably could have used a little more resin to make sure all the voids were filled.

Hey! good idea! Will save time swapping the jaws👍 Are you using waxed or dewaxed shellac ? Maybe it's the wax that's causing the streaks. Zinser's 'Seal Coat' was dewaxed but they don't sell it anymore. I also used to use a Butyl type alcohol (from Behlens) that was supposed to be good for shellac flakes. Spinny bits? You a Dr. Who fan too? Spaghetti grain? Yep, crazy🤪 Van Vogh put that same feeling into a painting of his 😁 I believe. Or were you subconsciously influenced by the shavings under the late ? I was! Hi Mike! Ummm yeah. Me and the CA glue are still learning to be friends. It can be kind of a jerk sometimes. 😉 I’m not sure about waxes vs dewaxed. Ive been using the 3# cut can (not the Seal Coat) and then cutting it to 1# for my sanding sealer, and using it straight from the can to make the OB Shine Juice. This is my 2nd can of the Zinser and also a different can of DNA. My first projects worked out great, nice shine that stuck around and no streaking on the resin at all. I know with the premixed shellac you can get a “bad can” since they stopped putting the date code on it. I got some dewaxed super blonde shellac flakes and mixed up a new batch of 1# with the new can of Kleen Strip Green DNA and will make a new batch of shine juice as well. I think I’ll see a big difference. I can tell just by the smell of the DNA that it’s different - one of the cans I have is so strong it’ll just about knock you over. I’ve actually not watched Dr. Who (I know, crazy right!?) but I seem to have my own little language that we affectionately refer to as “LIsa-Speak.” You’ll come to recognize it 😂 I don’t know if Spaghetti Grain is really a thing, but someone in a FB Woodturning group referred to it as that and I think it’s a perfect description! I’m sure you can see the shavings on the floor but you also may be seeing my “deflector” - I bought a piece of cheap laminate, cut it to fit between the legs, and attached it on an angle toward the front so most of the shavings not getting shot off the backside would fall through and slide out the front. That laminate is a funky brownish swirly kind of pattern, that actually looks pretty all right with the wood shavings (like that’s a consideration 😂) No worries sir you’re not a PITA - I really enjoy taking with you guys and sharing in this turning obsession 😃 Take care
@@LisaRamlow Shellac wax ... Ever notice you need to shake the mixture ? The milky stuff at the bottom is wax. If you let it sit you can decant it and leave the wax behind. Sometimes you don't want the wax. Even flakes will have some. Thinking about the streaks - it is more likely it is drying too fast (you're overworking it) so maybe a quick alcohol wipe will smooth it out. Same thing can happen when brushing on flatwork. Lisa-speak - sure feels comfortable to my ears😃 I made a deflector too. On front to let them slide off the front onto my feet.😁 Anyway, love your work and your vids ... keep 'em coming please👍🙏
Hi Robert, lots of manufacturers make 5-min epoxy and you can get it in any hardware store, big box store, just about anywhere. Sometimes it comes in separate tubes, sometimes it’s double-plunger type applicator that dispenses equal amounts of resin and hardener. It’s not specifically for turning but it works well for filling small cracks and defects.
Hi Richard, I’ve had trouble with EVERYTHING shattering the resin. On the recommendation of several other tuners, I just got an Easy Wood Tools negative rake carbide finisher and HOLY GUACAMOLE they were not kidding when they said this is a must for resin. I mean, seriously. I am finishing up the finial for my next video, which is an apple and resin pot that I almost didn’t do because I screwed up the resin pour and I didn’t know of it was even going to cure. That negative rake cutter didn’t even think about chipping or shattering at all. I got one of my freshly sharpened bowl gouges to get up in a corner and that shattered immediately. I’m totally sold! Hoping to have the video editing and up tomorrow-check it out and I think you’ll be impressed with this tool! Only problem is now o want the square and diamond cutters 😂
I have been using sticky backed aluminium tape as a shuttering but it always leaks. This has now shown me to use a glue gun to adhere the tape as well. Thanks
Hi Robert, thanks for stopping by! I still have leaks with some of my resin things, but I’m learning as I go. Hot glue helps make a dam and it is quicker (and cheaper) than using silicone caulk, which some turners use as well. 😊
Hi there, it depends a little on the moisture content on the wood before hand - this burl was down to about 10% I think, which is about what kiln dried wood reads in my shop so it was pretty dry. I left it in for a couple of hours, just to get the whole blank warm and evaporate any surface moisture, etc. Most people (especially people who make pen blanks and other small things) use a toaster oven, but I found it really cumbersome. The roaster seems to do the same thing - I can keep the temp down below 200F and I can put bigger things in it 😃
@@LisaRamlow cool. I don't know these things which is why I asked. I dislike disposable tools, but I admit most of my tools are not carbide as I don't have a lathe yet.
I wish I had time to even think about it! it’s really astonishing how many things are involved in turning, running a small business, and in doing a channel. So. Many. Hats! 😂
Rather than buying new carbide invest in a when wet grinding knife sharpening system and a Tomex 186 jig and can just resharpen your carbide cutter all together it cost just over 200 bucks.
I’ll give that a try. In the meantime I’ve been using the “green” DNA and that is working better. Apparently there isn’t really a standard formula for adding the methanol and whatever other junk they add to make it undrinkable, and those additives affect the properties for the DNA. Cheaper the more stuff they add to it I guess. The “green” versions have much less added to the alcohol and that has seemed to make a difference in my finishing stuff.
Hi Robert, there are lots of TH-cam videos on drying in the microwave - I’ve not done it myself yet but basically you weigh the rough turned bowl when you start, nuke the bowl in short increments and then let cool, then weigh again. Once it stops losing weight it should be dry enough to finish turn. A search on YT should pull up lots of in depth videos. Good luck!

A very pretty bowl. I made one with similar grain pattern from very old wood a neighbor gave me. Beautiful! I just got some new carbide inserts today from amazon. I had been sharpening them with diamond cards until I hit a screw and chipped one.

Great piece Lisa. The resin does not like that bowl at all, it just did not want to co-operate, but you did a great job of correcting it. The grain of the burr is always a true delight.

Hi Chris, thanks for watching! Yes, I know all about the glove police but I’ve found it to be a bit of a necessity for me. Any of the gloves I wear are very close-fitting and I try to know where all my body parts are at all times so I feel relatively comfortable wearing them. This one is a softball batting glove and works out really nicely 😊

Hi there, thanks for stopping by! I have what I think is a negative rake carbide cutter from Simple Woodturning Tools - it is cupped and is used for shear scraping. I just haven’t had much luck lately with it - can’t find the sweet spot to cut. I’ll have to get a hold of them and find out if there’s something I’m not doing right - I’ve not used that one much so the cutter should not be dull.

@@LisaRamlow so Simple wood tools arent selling a proper Negative rake cutter, because Easy Wood Tools own the Patent on this, reason i know this is because EWT are a supporter of my Channel so i get a lot of inside information direct from them...... regards to using it right, you hold the tool parallel to the floor and completely flat, no need to twist or rotate the tool in any way..... another reason for huge chip out or shattering could be the resin mix was slightly off in some way...... on a side note, im just about to record my podcast for the week (Makers International Podcast) And you are going to be my weekly Shoutout, i found your channel today and you do awesome work :)

I’m still working on the reasons I’m dealing with the resin shattering and chipping. I asked Alumilite and they said temperature can play a big part so I tried to address that and the working time on this project-turned the shop heat up to 68, warmed the blank and mold and the pressure pot for that matter, and was well within the working time. I measure by weight in grams and mix thoroughly making sure to scrape the bottom & sides so I just dunno. But I’ll keep at it and just make it work somehow!
I’ll keep the EWT in mind - I find I prefer the traditional tools to the carbides most of the time but there are certainly uses for both. I guess what I have is marketed as a shear scraper, and can be rotated (it has a round shaft) to be more or less aggressive. I just haven’t played with it much.

I love the scraper mostly when my carbides need a new blade and leaves all irregular choppy holes on the wood and/or the epoxy. You managed to persevere with the rough carbide and the bowl gadget or was it the spindle gauge and the final turnout a great conversation piece.
Thank you Sylvie, the resin chipping out is a pain for sure. I had no idea that a negative rake carbide cutter would make all the difference - I’ve not had a single chip or shatter since I switched to that for resin. Next resin piece I do I’ll show a comparison between a freshly sharpened gouge and the negative rake carbide. It’s totally a game changer for resin work. And I didn’t know this until a few videos ago, but carbide cutters can be sharpened quickly and easily on a diamond card. I’m going to do a Workshop Wednesday of sharpening mine here soon but there are lots of videos out there now that show you how to do it. Thanks for watching 😊

Oh yes of course, an oak burl in the turkey roaster, that's exactly what should..... actually thats pretty genius. I've got a little toaster oven that I use for smaller pieces, but Ive had pretty much that same roaster sitting down in my basement for 14 years.

Hey Lisa Beautiful bowl very good narrating. A machinist tip... if your carbide is getting dull. spray a little mixture of water & Joy dish soap on a diamond Stone or card and turn carbide cutting edge down and circle the stone in a figure 8 motion, not a circular motion. This will insure even distribution of pressure on carbide and will sharpen it. This will save you a ton of money. (hopefully). I look forward to your next video.

In my experience with aluminite ive found that a negative rake on the carbide doesn't get those large shatter marks.looks good.

Hi there! The scraper I was using is a cheap Benjamin’s Best bowl scraper that I made into a negative rake by grinding a bevel on the top side. To make shellac, I purchased shellac flakes and dissolved them in denatured alcohol. There are different ratios of flakes to alcohol depending on what you want to do with it. I’m mostly using shellac as a sanding sealer so I’m using a 1# cut, and I mix a small amount up at a time as it can go “bad” if left for too long. I used 1oz flakes to 8oz DNA and that’s a 1# cut.

I really want to help. Seeing how COVID has shut down all the makers fairs and art festivals, I dug through my subscriptions to try to find you some resources on the resin trouble you’re having.
From watching lots of resin projects, I wonder if you need to switch brands. Nick Zammeti is fearless about fixing his resin projects on the fly. He uses a brand I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else use.
The guy at Blacktail Studios really knows his resin. He seems to be devoted to helping his viewers. I know he’d be willing to give you some suggestions. Maybe he could be a resource?
I feel like you & Kim Tippin Wood Working are on the same wavelength about making your own products. You both have a mad scientist vibe, in a good way. I can also see a lot of you in the Turn A Wood Bowl guy!

I am definitely considering other brands of resin but since I literally just opened that gallon kit of Alumilite I’ll middle through til it’s gone. Stuff’s too expensive to give up on. I follow Kim and Nick and recently watched the guy from Blacktail so we are on the same page there! Jake Thompson also has some good videos on resin, and I’ve used Liquid Diamonds also though I can’t remember which projects were which anymore. My shop is an incredibly well insulated pole barn on a concrete slab so it stays really cool and a bit humid there in the summer. Now that the weather is starting to change I’ll be turning the furnace back on and I’ll do some experimenting with the Alumilite-maybe that’ll help someone else 😊

You can sharpen carbide cutters. Use a diamond wet stone. Works well.

Fantastic bowl Lisa! Gorgeous grain! Congratulations on 1000 subscribers. Hey a little hint about the carbide cutters. You can sharpen them on a stone, maybe 400 grit and a dab of WD40. Put it face down and go round and round and back and forth. You don't need a high priced sharpening system for that. Check out,"the Wood Whirler" for videos on sharpening the carbide cutters. Saves you a lot of money.

Hi Paige, thanks for stopping by! You’re the third person who has mentioned sharpening the carbide cutters so I’ll have to give it a shot. I have a couple of decent water stones and I also have a super-slow speed for carving tools. It’s a homemade thing I bought from a fellow carver and it’s pretty cool - he converted an old shiatsu foot massage thing into a sharpener. It has flat plates - a 600grit diamond, a 1200grit diamond, and a leather stropping disk/plate. There are two shafts that rotate in opposite directions and they turn super slow so as not to burn the temper off carving tools. I bet that would work, even if I don’t turn it on. I’ve been using it to touch up skews and stuff. 🤔

I know nothing about epoxy or turning wood but I wondered what would happen if you mixed the epoxy in a bowel and THEN put the burl into the epoxy. Would that have worked?
Hi Edith thanks for watching. Your idea does work, and in fact I ended up doing that a little bit with this one. The trickiest bit about casting wood in resin is that the wood floats so you either have to hot glue it to the bottom of the mold or put a non-stick barrier under a weight or something heavy to hold the wood in the mold. I started this one by putting the burl blank in the bowl and holding it down while pouring some resin around the edges, hoping to fill it from the bottom. That wasn’t quite working so I pulled the burl out, poured some resin in the bottom of the bowl, then put the wood blank back in the bowl and pushed it down into the resin. I think I just didn’t get it quite even, and I probably could have used a little more resin to make sure all the voids were filled.

Are you using waxed or dewaxed shellac ? Maybe it's the wax that's causing the streaks. Zinser's 'Seal Coat' was dewaxed but they don't sell it anymore. I also used to use a Butyl type alcohol (from Behlens) that was supposed to be good for shellac flakes.

Spaghetti grain? Yep, crazy🤪 Van Vogh put that same feeling into a painting of his 😁 I believe. Or were you subconsciously influenced by the shavings under the late ? I was!

I’m not sure about waxes vs dewaxed. Ive been using the 3# cut can (not the Seal Coat) and then cutting it to 1# for my sanding sealer, and using it straight from the can to make the OB Shine Juice. This is my 2nd can of the Zinser and also a different can of DNA. My first projects worked out great, nice shine that stuck around and no streaking on the resin at all. I know with the premixed shellac you can get a “bad can” since they stopped putting the date code on it. I got some dewaxed super blonde shellac flakes and mixed up a new batch of 1# with the new can of Kleen Strip Green DNA and will make a new batch of shine juice as well. I think I’ll see a big difference. I can tell just by the smell of the DNA that it’s different - one of the cans I have is so strong it’ll just about knock you over.
I’ve actually not watched Dr. Who (I know, crazy right!?) but I seem to have my own little language that we affectionately refer to as “LIsa-Speak.” You’ll come to recognize it 😂
I don’t know if Spaghetti Grain is really a thing, but someone in a FB Woodturning group referred to it as that and I think it’s a perfect description!
I’m sure you can see the shavings on the floor but you also may be seeing my “deflector” - I bought a piece of cheap laminate, cut it to fit between the legs, and attached it on an angle toward the front so most of the shavings not getting shot off the backside would fall through and slide out the front. That laminate is a funky brownish swirly kind of pattern, that actually looks pretty all right with the wood shavings (like that’s a consideration 😂)

@@LisaRamlow Shellac wax ... Ever notice you need to shake the mixture ? The milky stuff at the bottom is wax. If you let it sit you can decant it and leave the wax behind. Sometimes you don't want the wax. Even flakes will have some. Thinking about the streaks - it is more likely it is drying too fast (you're overworking it) so maybe a quick alcohol wipe will smooth it out. Same thing can happen when brushing on flatwork.

So who makes this 5 min resin? Never heard of it. I have just purchased som uv resin which I am looking fwd to trying
Hi Robert, lots of manufacturers make 5-min epoxy and you can get it in any hardware store, big box store, just about anywhere. Sometimes it comes in separate tubes, sometimes it’s double-plunger type applicator that dispenses equal amounts of resin and hardener. It’s not specifically for turning but it works well for filling small cracks and defects.

Hi Richard, I’ve had trouble with EVERYTHING shattering the resin. On the recommendation of several other tuners, I just got an Easy Wood Tools negative rake carbide finisher and HOLY GUACAMOLE they were not kidding when they said this is a must for resin. I mean, seriously. I am finishing up the finial for my next video, which is an apple and resin pot that I almost didn’t do because I screwed up the resin pour and I didn’t know of it was even going to cure. That negative rake cutter didn’t even think about chipping or shattering at all. I got one of my freshly sharpened bowl gouges to get up in a corner and that shattered immediately. I’m totally sold! Hoping to have the video editing and up tomorrow-check it out and I think you’ll be impressed with this tool! Only problem is now o want the square and diamond cutters 😂

I have been using sticky backed aluminium tape as a shuttering but it always leaks. This has now shown me to use a glue gun to adhere the tape as well. Thanks
Hi Robert, thanks for stopping by! I still have leaks with some of my resin things, but I’m learning as I go. Hot glue helps make a dam and it is quicker (and cheaper) than using silicone caulk, which some turners use as well. 😊
You should try the tin foil tape thing though, its easy to change the shape of the shuttering and very sticky as well as being a cheap option.
How long do you typically leave the wood in the roaster?
Hi there, it depends a little on the moisture content on the wood before hand - this burl was down to about 10% I think, which is about what kiln dried wood reads in my shop so it was pretty dry. I left it in for a couple of hours, just to get the whole blank warm and evaporate any surface moisture, etc. Most people (especially people who make pen blanks and other small things) use a toaster oven, but I found it really cumbersome. The roaster seems to do the same thing - I can keep the temp down below 200F and I can put bigger things in it 😃

You can sharpen your insert. An when using insert you might wanna turn at 1300 or 1600 rpms

Rather than buying new carbide invest in a when wet grinding knife sharpening system and a Tomex 186 jig and can just resharpen your carbide cutter all together it cost just over 200 bucks.

In place of Everclear, try Vodka, use potato vodka, cheapest you can find.
I’ll give that a try. In the meantime I’ve been using the “green” DNA and that is working better. Apparently there isn’t really a standard formula for adding the methanol and whatever other junk they add to make it undrinkable, and those additives affect the properties for the DNA. Cheaper the more stuff they add to it I guess. The “green” versions have much less added to the alcohol and that has seemed to make a difference in my finishing stuff.
Does anyone have experience of using a microwave to dry wood?
Hi Robert, there are lots of TH-cam videos on drying in the microwave - I’ve not done it myself yet but basically you weigh the rough turned bowl when you start, nuke the bowl in short increments and then let cool, then weigh again. Once it stops losing weight it should be dry enough to finish turn. A search on YT should pull up lots of in depth videos. Good luck!
I have had a similar experience with alumilite prone to shattering. More than likely something I did wrong but never did figure out what. Frustrating.
Hi Steve, thanks so much for watching. I’ve had several viewers recommend a negative rake carbide tool to prevent the chipping and shattering-I ordered one today and it’ll be interesting to see if that makes a difference, with all the resin prep and casting being the same.
