    Woodworking is a form of art, and whether you use resin, or not, contrast the color, or throw the rainbow at your work, it is art. If you like it or not, you must always appreciate the creativity and vision that went into it. I like the bowl.

    Absolutely gorgeous Lisa, I am personally a huge fan of chocolate resins over bright blues. I am in the process of purchasing a 24/36 Laguna and setting up a shop after 7 years without one. I have been a bowl turner for 30 years and had the honor of being mentored by Barbara Dill out of Virginia. Thanks so much for motivating me to get turning again!! Keep the videos coming my friend.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Brian! I love all the resins and am quite fond of blue but I tend to use that on the lighter woods or cherry. I really wanted this to complement the burl and not complete with it. I have the bigger burl I cored this one from about half filled with resin - it sucked up a lot more than I’d thought!

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Gary! It is a big damn mess, that’s for sure, and I do prefer to turn wood but I love the look of some hybrid blanks so they’ll be in the rotation 😁

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Lisa it is a big mess. I worked as a wood pattern maker and 90% of what I made was out of wood. But sometimes our customers wanted resin patterns as they held up better with all the sand they packed around them when making their molds.
      I used epoxy casting resin, laminating resin, polyester, polyurethane and other
      So I mixed and poured more resin than you can imagine. As well as needing to machine some of it for various reasons. The dust and the fumes can be an issue and I am thinking it is one reason I lost most of my sense of smell.
      So those are my main reasons and I do agree about the hybrid blanks. They look pretty cool!

    I love the unexpected patterns you get from a burl. That must be frustrating to have such a nice piece but not be able to turn it until it’s dry enough. I think this turned out beautifully. 👍

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! When I first started turning I basically just turned everything start to finish whether it was dry or not - sometimes it worked out, sometimes not so much. It is still hard to wait for particularly interesting pieces to come out of the kiln, but I have a table full of bowls ready to finish turn so I have a pretty consistent turnover 👍

  • @TheWoodWhirler
    @TheWoodWhirler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Lisa, been a while since I've talked to you. You sure have improved, proud of you. Now about round carbides. That's what I use to turn resin, the regular ones, not negative rake ones. I don't get chip-outs. The thing I have against NG cutters is that they are throw-aways, no sharpening. Three things I do to avoid chip-outs are speed, angle of cut, and never cut over the edge. I turn at about 1000 rpm, hold my cutter at about 30 to 45 degrees toward my cut, and as I said never go over the edge. I mentioned the angle once before to you and you replied that your shafts were square and it was difficult. Well to solve that, just grind some rounds on the two bottom of the square. Not too much, just enough to where it's easy to hold. When you cut at an angle it is slicing, not raking, thus a much easier and smoother cut. When you cut over the edge, it's like cutting end-grain. You have no support behind the cut. So to solve that, stop the cut about 1/2" before the edge and come into it from the outside. Hope that helps. Take care, Larry

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Larry, I am definitely getting better every day and am having so much fun! I prefer to use the traditional gouges as much as I can, and I have several bowl scrapers with NR grinds so I use a bit of everything depending on the project. If I used a whole NR round carbide cutter in a year I’d be surprised, but I totally get where you’re coming from. The resin chipped really bad on this piece at the edge, and that is to be expected since it really grabbed it coming off - cutting the other way it probably wouldn’t have been so chunky with the straight carbide. Thanks for the tips as always!

    • @TheWoodWhirler
      @TheWoodWhirler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LisaRamlow, I think you will find that cutting into the edge regardless of what you are using or the material you are cutting will give you better results. You know it's all about what you are used to. I used traditional tools for years but got lazy and started using carbides. It's the end result that counts and we are both doing just fine. Take care, Larry

    Some day I want to do some resin turning. The only show I do any more, the Oregon Country Fair, they have LOTS of jugglers there, and I want to do some contact juggle balls. Watching the grabbing of the round carbide tool, I wonder if angling it down would help. If you are using a standard scraper on bowls like I do, raising the handle to get the same top angle of a NRS, it still doesn't cut like a NRS. I do cut below center on the outside of a bowl. Of course, I shear scrape every thing....
    Oh, oils.... I use walnut oil for most of my bowls. It cures so slowly that there is almost no risk of it catching fire. It happened to me once. Set some rags to dry on black plastic bags in summer sun. That was enough to trigger spontaneous combustion. With drying oils, if you have a wood stove, that is another way to dispose of them....

      Huh, juggling balls!? That would be really cool! I have not loved the results I’m getting from the walnut oil when using it with the Beall buffing system so I’ve gone back to using Tried & True Danish Oil, which is polymerized linseed oil, and like that pretty well. I use that on pieces I’m turning specifically for utility pieces because I really like the way the bidding system makes the bowls feel. Hope you’re doing well out there!

    Beautiful bowl. Great choice of resin color. It really allows the beauty of the burl to show.

    Great job! Resin is expensive and was pleased to see your method of limiting excessive waste. I’m with you on the use of resin, but also the extreme mess it makes when turning.

      I try not to waste it for all sorts of reasons. I don’t love turning it but I do love the look once it’s done 😁

    I love it! The first time I saw resin being used, I thought it was blasphemy, especially with a bright unnatural color. But the finished product caught my eye. Not too bad, actually. This one - the one you just made - is the first one I've seen with a natural color. I love it!

    perfect choice and I think that those turners that will not use resin at time do them selfies a disservice and some of there work could benefit from it

      Hi Kenneth! I agree. I’ll never be a turner who says “let’s put all kinds of crazy things into resin!” But it does have its place and holds some pieces together that without it, may not have made it through the turning process. I’m going to do the bigger oak burl with this same color and offer them as a set 😁

    I think it is stunning, and the complementary colours are perfect. Resin isn't a medium that I want to work with but I love that otherwise unusable Woods, especially exotic stuff can be turned by using resins. I also think this bowl might have been very interesting with clear resin. Sort of highlighting the faults and cracks in dramatic way. Anyway, great work, mate. Cheers
