    In this video I take a piece of apple log and turn it into a natural edge bowl / vessel.
    And I got my tail center stuck in the tailstock quill. Again.

      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I’m sorry you’re having the same problem but I am glad it’s not just me 😂
      It’s too bad cuz the live center is really nice and if I don’t apply much pressure it will come out, but it doesn’t play nice if I have to help seat the spur drive. And it’s the only cup center I have so I may have to look at getting a new one

    Thanks for the shoutout! My former mechanic brain tells me to get a brass punch or brass stock Is fine and use a decent size hammer and the live center will pop right out. I wish my General had a hollow tailstock so I could use a knockout bar like you can. Where the handle screws onto the shaft, drill a hole for the set screw to sit in and it shouldn’t come loose when torquing on it. What this a green or dry piece of apple? It sure is pretty. Hope this helps. Jim

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jim! This is pretty dry which contributed to me taking a bit of a beating 😂
      The knockout bar that comes with the Laguna (for the headstock) has a brass tip and I used a biggish ball peen hammer. Another viewer said the knockout rod is too long and is absorbing some of the force so I’ll have to see what I can find that’s shorter and use a bigger hammer. It’s been stuck before and I’ve always been able to beat it out but this time I got it in there goooooood 🙄

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LisaRamlowIf it’s not metal on metal your probably not going to get the right amount of shock through the rod to remove the live center. My lathe came with a knockout bar that has a plastic end on it and never use it. Give the brass rod a try, safe turning!

  • @artr8285
    @artr8285 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Heat usually helps loosen metal parts. I would try a propane torch evenly around the extended tail stock to get it to expand. Once you get that center out, coat the taper with sharpie all around and then put it in and out a few times and check if it rubs off evenly around and down the taper. If there is only a shiny ring or high spots, that could be the problem. You might be able to polish off any problem areas or just get another one. Beautiful grain on that piece - a very nice job as usual. Glad to have you back!

    • @LisaRamlow

      Do be aware that apple, like cherry, has a tendency to crack so cut it right before you plan to turn it and definitely seal the end grain of you rough out blanks. Seems like the fruit woods can be a little tricky sometimes

    Nice bowl Lisa. Your pup sure was intent on his squirrel studies. About the stuck live center, steel knockout bar and a big enough hammer will take it out. I do not know what you have available for a shop table set-up but ...... I'd take the tail stock off the lathe and try punching it out in the vertical. Pour a little bit of Kroil or another penetrating oil in there and let is sit a spell. Let gravity help you and the hammer knock it out. Thanks for posting! Take Care!

    Beautiful apple jack bowl Lisa. I have a similar problem with my live centre on my 50 year old delta lathe. I use a square shank screwdriver between the live centre and my tail stock quill and back it in as far as it will go, then give a sharp push on the screwdriver handle toward the head stock. The live centre always comes out with this method although yours seems to be in there much more solid. Good luck solving your problem.

    • @LisaRamlow

      Is it a Laguna live center? Another viewer with a Laguna 24/36 said he had the same issue with his and I wonder if it’s a manufacturing issue. I don’t think I have a scraper that big but I did try the flat part of a big pry bar and it still wouldn’t budge. Got it stuck good I guess 😬

    Nice to see you back Lisa. Very nicely done. I like the project a lot. However boy was there a lot of hangout with that block Maybe that contributed to the chatter. Wow that taper must be off on that live center or nicked or burrs? Just a thought. Thanks again!

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey John! The long glue block could have contributed but it was singing between centers too so I think the worst of it was just from the cracks and voids. I really think the issue is just this tail center, and another Laguna owner (24/36) said he has the same issue. All the other centers eject properly, but this one just doesn’t reach to engage or something though I didn’t think about the taper being off 🤔. I’ve checked for nicks and burrs but everything feels smooth. Unfortunately this is the only cup center I have so I guess I’m gonna have to look for a new one. The OneWay centers are supposed to be really nice, though they are pricey 😬

    Incredible piece, Lisa! Really glad to see you back.
    My last slave had a finicky tail stalk and it was not designed to eject the factory live center but it did conveniently did eject the Jacob's chuck and I think that's because it had a longer Morse 2 taper on it. Now, my 12 16 has been great but the quill gets very stiff when retracting or extending, when mostly retracted. The demo I was sold 1st had a whole bunch of problems because it was treated very roughly. It has the same issues but others and with it, it was the threads of the set screw on the handwheel that stripped out. The same thing as you found, I was cranking it as hard as I could to get it to retract and it was the aluminum that failed and there was obviously noticeable wear on the flat spot of the actuator. Either way, I learned not to force anything because I'm more likely to jam it up or damage something than to free it up. That said, I've had to beat a Jacob's Chuck out of the tail stock of my old lathe with a knockout bar and a mallet so I know what you were going through. :)

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jay! Yes, I agree about forcing it. I put a reasonable amount of pressure on the handwheel but I feel for the set screw slipping and then stop. Don’t want to actually break it, it’s out of warranty now! I’m hesitant to beat on it too hard but not much choice at the moment. I’m using the brass-tipped knockout bar that came with the lathe but some have said it’s too long and isn’t transferring all of the blow from the ball peen hammer 🤷‍♀️. Frustrating as hell but I’ll get it out one way or another 😁

    • @jayscott306

    Apple Jack is a fine specimen. Nice work!
    On the stuck centre, try a shorter knockout bar - that one will be flexing a lot when you hit it. A heat gun might be useful too. Is there another flat on the other side of the screw for another set screw? Try getting a long spanner/wrench to get some leverage.
    After you get it out, inspect the inside of the tailstock taper as well as the live centre taper - if there's any scoring or damage that might be what's causing it to stick.

  • @williesims7224

    Lisa, I have the same problem with a few of my tailstock pieces. The problem is that the shaft on the piece is just a bit too short. The wood is in the right direction but just not sturdy enough. I have a 2" wide homemade parting tool that I lay on top of the piece as you did with the wood and turn the wheel and the pressure will cause the piece to eject. I wish I could draw you a picture. This was very frustrating to me but this is a simple solution.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Willie! I know what you’re saying - I tried to use the flat shaft of a big pry bar as a wedge and I was still moving the set screw back on the shaft flat. I think I’m gonna have to beat it out and then get a different cup center. This one is ok as long as I don’t put too much pressure on it - it must be just a hair too short to engage and while it seems the further in the shaft goes, the more likely it is that it *would* self eject, but I think the taper is so tight it can’t punch it out. Very frustrating indeed but we shall persevere! 😁

    Advice on the tail stock issue. Get a shorter, and if possible, fatter knock out bar because the long factory one absorbs too much of the hammer blow. Use a 4lb sledge to hit the knock out bar. When you do get the cone out, make sure it’s tapered shaft is smooth and polish if necessary to reduce friction. Or just trash it and get another. Hope this helps.

    Driving bearing races out when replacing wheel bearings taught me a couple of lessons about this. First you need steel on steel contact. A straight steel knock out bar without the polymer ball/handle on it, and some heat would be a plus. The steel on steel contact doesnt allow for rebound/dead blow effect.

    Nice piece. I tend to think that most dogs are part rodent. My daughter's Corgi and my best friend's Pit will scour my shop, even after I cleaned it, and find pieces of wood to chew on, leaving the doggy chew toys alone.....
    As for the tail stock quill, I hope you have it out by now. I think there are 2 different lengths of quills on the live centers. Some self eject, and some have to be knocked out. GRRR!!! If you have a mechanic friend, they may have a 'pickle fork' which you can drive between the tailstock and the live center, if it fits. I used some thing similar, and most of the time it works, but once I pushed the cone off of the live center. I have used router wrenches which are thin enough to put between the end of the quill and the live center cone and pry it out that way. Most of the time this works as long as I haven't put it in with a lot of brute strength.... Some will use a torch to heat the quill up a bit, but I have no torch skills, other than for setting off fireworks....Hope it is not rusted into place.

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Their customer service is fantastic. Only issues I’ve had were with the tailstock and they took care of it quickly and easily. This is just the shaft on the live center is a tiny bit shorter and it won’t hit the stop inside the quill that self-ejects it. Only this live center does that so I need to either get a new one or figure out if there’s a way to use some sort of spacer or something. Don’t let that scare you away - all the lathe manufacturers have issues of one kind of another, and I’m very happy with this lathe especially at the price point, which granted was a little less when I bought mine in 2020, but they have all gone up.

    • @OregonOldTimerWOODTURNING
      @OregonOldTimerWOODTURNING 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LisaRamlow My first lathe, an ancient Rockwell, wouldn't eject anything from the quill. I turned a dowel that would snug up inside the quill at about the depth of live centers. The snug fit kept it from falling out. I pressed a half-inch length of that into the quill and had no more trouble ejecting anything.
      Your problem is obviously the live center and not the lathe. I'd just stick a loose scrap of dowel inside the quill every time I used that live center.

    Beautiful Vessel. I would try spraying the live center shaft with either WD40 or penetrating oil through the hole where the knockout bar goes and as best as I could on the shaft were the live center head spins on the front and letting it sit for a few hours or even overnight then give it another try. I have a similar problem with my Laguna spur drive in the head stock. with that I have been able to lock the headstock and grab the spur drive with a pipe wrench and give it like a 1/2 turn and it comes out after that . Did that twice and I just don't use that spur drive anymore. I have another spur drive and no issues getting that one to pop right out. Possibly you could take the handle off the tail stack and the head off the live center and grab both ends with two different pipe wrenches and give it a spin to free up the live center shaft. Also another trick ? might be to take a large adjustable wrench or pipe wrench and place it behind the live center instead of the wood you were trying to use . Or some kind of metal that is flat to try that trick of prying you were trying with the wood. I dont know if any of that helps but it is a few ideas anyways.

    Always a pleasure to see your videos! Welcome back!
    As far as the tail stock goes, "Cant be tight if it's liquid" haha, no but, some heat may allow you enough space to remove it! What live center is that anyway?
    I'm always jealous of your abilities to carve out bowls, I have a horrible time with catching my gouge, guess there's some technique I need to learn. Out of curiosity, why did you use a bowl gouge to rough out and not a roughing gouge?

    • @LisaRamlow
      @LisaRamlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Chris! Very important point - I turned this bowl in cross-grain orientation (grain runs perpendicular to the bed ways) rather than spindle orientation (grain runs parallel with the bed ways). You never want to use a spindle roughing gouge when you are turning something in cross-grain orientation because the tool isn’t strong enough to handle the end grain coming at it. The spindle roughing gouge is a flat piece of metal with the edges rolled up and a flat, rectangular and mounted in the handle. And that tang can snap, especially if you’ve got crazy branches and stuff. So always a bike gouge or carbide tool on cross-grain pieces.
      The live center is the Laguna that came with the lathe. It’s a great center aside from the sticking problem but that’s a big enough problem that I’m gonna have to do something else
