That turned out SOOOOOOOO much better than I anticipated it would. I know it was a lot of work but it was really worth all of that effort. Nice job!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
lolololol Out of the line of fire. I have had pieces fly off and I'm 54 and my reflexes are not what they used to be. I love your work, just beautiful...
Nice turn Lisa. I also want to mention that you have an excellent and safe approach with all of your tools. I really enjoy watching you turn. Great job... V
Hi Lisa, usually I don't really love resin use, but there, I see in you work a discrete and useful using of resin. I love the result that you get in final. 😉👍
Excellent job with the spalted maple. Your choice of resin color was perfect and DID NOT detract, but enhanced the piece. I can't wait to see more of your work. :)
Hi David, thanks for watching 😊 I do love me some contrasting resin and wood projects, but this piece was just so amazing on it’s own I went for something that would almost fade into the colors and grain pattern. I’m really pleased with it!
Great job on that splat bowl, turned out super cool. I will have to tell my wife , or get her to watch the video ,on the using of the dishwasher scrubbies with sandpaper, great idea. Thank for another great video.
The bowl is a real beauty Lisa !! Don't you just love how much fun a big bowl is ? The one thing I find important for a wax topcoat is heating it to 'melt' it well by rubbing at speed or buffing. I use many kinds of material as backing pads (sponges, thin hard plastic, sticks & dowels) in an attempt to keep grooves and waves away. My father said 'Always use a sanding pad on your furniture - your fingers will put dents in the surface'. Stay safe. -Mike😷
Hi Mike! I was a little scairt, but am looking forward to doing bigger pieces. I turned the speed up for the polish paste, which is still mostly just like wax 😂
Your presentation skills are as good as your turning ability. A full explanation without wasting words. Wonderful work with the resin too. I use acks and find it to be a good value. I’d rather turn than spend time making my own.
Hi there, and thank you very much for the kind words - I appreciate the feedback. I’m going to order some Acks paste - I’ve seen it used by a bunch of turners I watch and I know it’s good stuff. Agree about the time thing - when I first started turning last year, I wasn’t doing my YT Channel yet, so I had more time to fart around and experiment with things. Doing this channel requires a lot of time and attention so I am glad to have good options commercially available and I like to support small businesses whenever possible. Thanks for watching 😊
Hi there, thanks for watching. This is a gorgeous piece of maple and I’m glad I was able to come away with a nice finished piece. I wasn’t always so sure I was going to make it! Stepmom is still in the hospital and is making slow Rogers, but in the right direction so we’re just trying to be patient. Thanks for the good thoughts, can never have too much of that!
Hey. Just wanted to say how much I’m enjoying your series. Very well put together and I also appreciate you illustrating the trial and error that goes into these projects. A lot of turners just omit the way things come to be.
@@LisaRamlow I don’t know how into social media you get, but another great platform for turning is TikTok. It’s fun to throw together a quick 1 min video and direct it over to the main videos!
Hi Jean, thanks for watching. I’m going to try and find some clear bowls in a variety of sizes that I can use as the “smoosher” - that would make it easier to see how far up the resin is coming, and if there are any voids, etc.
Hi Stacey, thanks! It was a struggle - I looked longingly at all the bright, shiny mica powders 😂, but decided I really wanted the resin fills to blend into this piece and I think it was the right call.
Lisa, Since you have a pressure pot, you can just buy a " vacuum generator", which runs off of your compressor. It can be connected to the same pipe fitting you use for pressure. I am sure some one on youtube can describe the process than I. Another option is to cut a disk of plywood to fit tightly on top of your pressure pot and drill a hole for your shop vac. Don't worry about complete air tightness, your vac will draw enough volume to compensate for any leakage. A paper ply barrel has the walls made out of many layers of paper and glue and is usually used to ship dry materials. The barrels usually have a locking ring around the top. They come in many sizes from pints to 100 gallons. Bill.

Spalted wood is beautiful, nature's way of painting on wood... Spalted/punky wood does bite back sometimes as we all eventually find out. Caution always rules the day! Thanks!
Thanks Robert! I’m getting a bigger pressure pot and that should help some. It’s crazy how resin just seems to evaporate sometimes! Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks Scott - I picked up a pack of like 4 from the Dollar Tree or something and I don’t actually remember why, but I like the way they work with the finishing bits so I found a good use for them 😂 Thanks for watching!
A beautiful bowl! I especially like how well the dark chocolate color of the resin worked with the colors & tones in the wood. This was an excellent project!
This is gorgeous..I love the graining, lines and the fact you complemented the colour of the resin with your bowl rather than put bright colours with it..I love bright don’t get me wrong..But this did not need it .The wood itself is so beautiful and you let that talk ..Great job, One of the nicest bowls I have seen in a while 😀
I just got a lathe, so soon it is time for me to do more than just dream about wood turning. At the same time we just had to take down a big cherry tree in the garden, so a lot of pieces have been saved for turning. I know the wood has to dry, but can't wait to start turning out of wood from my garden.
Hi Marie, congrats on the lathe - you will love it! I love cherry tho I’ve heard the fruit trees do tend to crack a lot. If you can, rough turn the cherry into bowl blanks and seal the end grain - they will dry faster as you’ve removed much of the material. You can also turn some wet to final thickness and shape, and then let them warp naturally, which is a really cool and organic look. RoboHippy aka Reed Gray turns most of his bowls this way and has a ton of great videos on his techniques and turning in general - just don’t use a spindle roughing gouge on anything but a spindle - it is dangerous and there are lots of other tools to use for finishing cuts that are built to handle the forces of end grain/side grain rotation. Good luck and stay safe!
Hi Lisa, I was a bit surprised when you said this 25cm bowl was your biggest to date. It certainly looks bigger but so do some your other pieces. The finish is great indeed! I'm still busy improving my work in this respect. Thnx for sharing!
Hi Leo! Jason sent me this blank when I still had the Delta Midi, which would do 12.5” but I wonder if the 1HP would have struggled a bit. I have not been able to get my hands on many larger blanks so far but now that I’ve rebuilt my trailer and have a gas chainsaw (still only 16” but good enough) I’m planning to do more active wood sourcing. Like everything with turning, there’s always lots of things to try and finishes are no exception. I’m pretty happy with the Howard’s Feed & Wax for a more matte finish, I like the OB Shine Juice if I want it really shiny, and the Tried & True for food utility bowls. Thanks for watching, and stay safe on the lathe! 😊
In the short time I've been a subscriber, Lisa, you've achieved impressive results with some beautifully figured stock. As mentioned before, your narration is greatly appreciated, and from what I've observed to date, you do not seem to be addicted to blue resin (which in far too many instances, on other woodturning channels, has produced dissonant results), choosing complimentary resin colors instead, as demonstrated by this project. That's a huge plus from my point of view,
Hi Noah! I do have to admit it is a struggle to use something other than blue resin as it’s my favorite color and I have a blue mica powder that I’m totally in love with, but I also like the idea of complimentary over contrasting colors as well. And I like totally natural pieces with no resin too, so it really depends on the piece and what I want the overall look to be. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos 😁
Lisa, To rid yourself of most of the voids in resin casting: 1-Find your self a lidded container that can withstand the vacuum created by your shop vac. I use a heavy fiber barrel. 2-Make a hole to accept your shop vac hose. 3-Put your resin filled/covered piece in the container. 4-Turn on the vac for 20 - 60 seconds. This will suck out most of the trapped bubbles and when the vac is released the liquid resin will be pulled back into a fill the voids. 5-Put your piece in the pressure chamber, if you use one, and let it cure. I learned this years ago while teaching Industrial Arts. Keep up the good work,
Hi Bill, thanks for stopping by! That is a very interesting process and I will definitely have to give it a try. I just picked up a 10 gallon pressure pot with a 14” diameter so will be able to use that for the vast majority of my bowls and that will help with some of the smaller bubble type holes. I’m not exactly sure what you mean by a fiber barrel - what else would something like that be used in so I could get a look at it?
Gorgeous! Gotta love spalted wood.
Totally agree Terry!

To rid yourself of most of the voids in resin casting:
1-Find your self a lidded container that can withstand the vacuum created by your shop vac. I use a heavy fiber barrel.

3-Put your resin filled/covered piece in the container.
