    I built a Shovelhead chopper in the 1980s. Counting all the wires: rectifier to battery, battery to ground, battery to coil with main shut off toggle switch mounted on top motor mount. Toggle switch also goes to tail light and headlight housing. Switch on top of housing for hi/lo beams. Main switch to rear brake light switch. Rear brake light switch to rear light housing. That was all. What is that, 8 wires? No front brake. Jockey shift lever under my left hip. So I had nothing on the handlebars except the throttle cable. It was actually my daily commuter 30 miles each way.

    It's amazing to me just how complicated motorcycles are today. Yes they are so much better and more reliable (and crazy expensive). I would work on my motorcycle all week to ride on the weekend in the 60s,,,,, I'm currently on a 5000+ mile trip on my 2019 CVO, an amazing motorcycle,,, push a button and see the tire pressure etc,,,,but just thinking how complex this bike is,,,blows my mind.
    Great video Doc!

    the rubbing issue in the connector makes pure sense to me now, i have a 2000 fxdx an just had a boiled battery, im about to replace the voltage regulator and ground wires with new but i didnt even think about the plugs, my bike has an after market cam kit in it and shakes a lot more than standard so could be an issue i have. thanks for the tips and advice 👍

    Doc, good advice so far. My left side control module stopped working, everything on that side does not work. I opened it up and I have power and good ground. I've checked the connector under the gas tank and it is clean and tight. My question is how do I determine if the problem is the left side control module PN 72949-12A or the Body Control Module?

    The throttle issue has a Tech Tip TT418A. With revision A, replacing the pins with current production pins exactly as you state. I had this problem and my local stealer could properly diagnose. I had to do the research and come back and tell them what to do to fix my bike. I had them change the pins and the connector. No problems since. It would go into limp mode every once in a while. I'd stop and either clean the connector pins or just re-seat it and be on my way. I carried alcohol and q-tips with me, not anymore once I found the Tech Tip and the revision.

    DOC - great vid. I have a 2008 x bones (FLSTSB) and experienced a total loss of power (literally everything suddenly went dead with absolutely ZERO power) while riding. Just prior to the total loss of power, the bike was hesitating similar to how a car will sputter when it's about to run out of gas. When that happened, I slowed to 55MPH and it ran for a few miles just fine so I cranked it up to 70 and it was doing fine for a few more miles. Then I slowed to 55 again and when I tried to accelerate back up, it hesitated, and eventually completely lost power. There was plenty of gas in the tank because I had fueled about 20 miles back. The experience was as if someone had pulled one end of the battery cable off the battery. Do you have any suggestions for where I should start looking?

    Hi Doc, I have a 2011 Heritage Classic with approx. 8,500 Km. This bike has not been driven in the last 8 years. When I stored the bike, I removed the battery. The fuel in the tank has not been replaced since storage. I did top up the fuel, installed the battery and tried to fire the engine. No luck! I removed the plugs and dripped fuel in to the cylinders, replaced the plugs and the engine fired until the small amount of fuel was depleted. Once I remove the old fuel and before I go further what do you recommend I do in preparation to start the unit?

    Have an 09 Dyna Fxd. Will this cause the engine not to start at all. Observed code in speedo. Please let me know. Bike was not used since 2019. Now 2021, trying to sell. Had to replace tank (other one was shot with rust [live in South FL]), new spark plugs, new gas (premium), new fuel pump. Try to start and it turns over but will not fire. Checked codes and it shows p0374 and 61122. Read some forums which states it could be the switch or cps. Please help me get bike running. Oh by the way, removed air filter and the throttle body is nasty. Cleaning tomorrow with throttle body cleaner. Look forward to hearing from you.

    Hey Doc. Start with basics - Power and Ground. Battery voltage at battery. What’s voltage at consumer? Via shop manual, what’s consumer voltage supposed to be?
    To your point of fettering or what I was taught, is commonly referred to as micro corrosion, cleaning terminals is a must. Just be careful of what you stick in the female terminals. Part of your diagnostics should include a drag test. Simply ensuring the tension is adequate when mated electrically.
    Ok, I purposely didn’t call out gender to the harness / consumer side of terminals. . The Female is usually vehicle harness side. Consumers are typically male. Insert inappropriate jokes here.
    And yes, in the automotive world, the Air Flow Meter has gold tinned terminals. Gold reduces corrosion opportunity.
    Keep up the great videos"............

    Doc, my buddy’s 06’ Lowrider idles fine, takes full throttle, but bogs and backfires at part throttle. He just reassembled it after having powder coating done. Can you give us some direction? He replaced the pump thinking that was it. Thanks.

    • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson
      @LowCountryHarleyDavidson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Powder coated what? The difficulty with powder coating is it acts like an insulator. Harley-Davidson depends on grounds through the frame. All electrical parts must have a good connection to the frame. Motor has a connection to frame. All electrical parts on motor must have a connection to frame and to negative ground. I did do a video on how important ECM good grounds vs dirty grounds.
      If you just powder coated the throttle body, the IAC pintle might be hanging up. Please make sure you have the right wiring going to the correct injector. Thanks ~ Doc

    Not like on my wife 2018 roadglide as soon as you turn the ignition to the on position you hear the fuel pump going and the infotainment turn on WITHOUT having the gin present.
    thank you

    • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson
      @LowCountryHarleyDavidson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I gotta ask, are you sure you have Your fob and not the wifes?
      being a 2015 how old is your battery? Did it die and you are charging is to help it along. Strength of the battery has a lot to do with the signal. If the motorcycle battery went dead. you might have to trailer to a dealer to reprogram. It is also possible the antenna under the seat has come unplugged. When the bike ask for the pin and you enter the code, does the bike turn on? Lets talk more. Email me..Doc

    Good video as usual but not sure it applies to my issue. 2009 dubs street bob. Was not starting cuz it was blowing the battery fuse. Had it into dealership. They said it was the left turn signal wire. Replaced it, replaced fuses, she fire up and off I went... only to be stuck at my next stopping point. The only way I can get the bike to start now is remove all but the absolutely essential fuses the re insert all the accessory and light fuses I removed to start the bike. Bike runs great while I and all lights and accessories work as they should. Stop bike and turn it off. Hit starter button, completely silent. All lights will come on, all accessories work and fuel pump cycles. No fuses blown... what do I do??

    • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson
      @LowCountryHarleyDavidson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First I am sorry the Techs at the dealership took the easy first fix that was part of the bigger problem. You have the choice of returning to the Techs and ask for then to follow the Flow Chart further where something else is the cause.
      You could spend the time and diag. . First how old is the battery? a weak or almost used up battery can have you chasing your tail. Battery less than 2 years old? Good, Now check all Ground connections at frame and motor. don't just look at them, remove,clean and reattach. Test bike. issue still there? What was the last thing YOU did before this happened? Start there.
      Then test in garage, remove the accessory fuse. Re test your bike. if issue is gone check all accessories. If still there remove another item. keep removing items from the electrical side of the bike until the bike does not have the issue. then concentrate on that area.....Doc

    • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson
      @LowCountryHarleyDavidson  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible you pinched a wire putting the grips on. Since there is no light in speedometer, I am guessing the Body Control Module won’t allow the motor to run until it can communicate with Speedo and ECM. Recheck what you have done. Make sure your security fob has a good battery and near the seat. Then take it to your dealer….Doc

      Dielectric grease would certainly extend the service life of the original pins, but the fettering will continue until you eventually end up with the problem anyway. (See Terry Peterson's comment.)

    Doc, I sure hope you can help. Here is my issue. RoadKing, 2003,FLHRI......When I turn the ignition switch to the on position everything works perfect. As soon as I start the bike, the fuse blows for the Speedo, Odometer, Turn signals and Horn. It only happens at start up, any other time it works just fine. If there was a short to ground in that circuit it would pop the fuse as soon as I turned the ignition switch to the on position but it doesn't. The bike can sit there all day long with the ignition switch in the on position and basically drive the battery dead....AND EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECT. As soon as I hit the start the engine "pop goes the fuse" bike starts and runs perfect. I have everyone as Space Coast Harley stumped with this one...The only think I can think of is when the bike is not running its not vibrating but when the engine is started the vibration is causing a wire somewhere to ground out and pop the fuse. Is there anything else that you may know that could be causing this problem. I can't be the first person to have this problem....Please help....Ray

    My ‘94 Wideglide has reoccurring bad battery connections that seem to become loose despite years of RE tightening…. Maybe the stupid battery post bolts could be manufactured to fit SAE wrench sizes instead of the sloppy fit half metric sizes. HD should give more concise directions about battery replacement and maybe make the battery cavity a trifle larger. I use an old inner tube to protect from moisture and vibration. Most people forget that one slip on the positive connector arcing across from touching the frame could cause HUGE problems…Overall crappy battery connections….. thanks

    More like VIBRATION FEATHERING not a corrosion problem , how about: erosion Fearthering,,, Harleys Vibrate the pin connectors can Feather condition and make lack of contact throwing a P2135... now on this note i see more of Harley Davidson going the Cheap route to save $$$$$ get the junk connectors and leave there loyal customer with future problems which is just a bad Decision and makes Harley Davidson look like unreliable bikes to buy, we pay so much money for these Harley and they install loose tolerance wiring connectors at a low price for these connectors and i comes back on them and it gives the repair techs work for something to do and i bet is not a warranty part after time and who suffers paying for it DOC ??? Harley Davidson knows it will take time for this connector to were down problem to happen, and have a fault code P2135 they know this by installing a low price low quality connector. but the company did save a ton of money to go the Cheap parts route and screw over the poor owners of Harley Davidson on bad connectors and blame it on Big Bad Machine just Vibrating its way into glory and say it is the nature of the BEAST to vibrate .... when actually DOC it not a vibrate or as you say corrosion problem for it is just rubbing loose problem and the real answer is just install a GOOD PLUG CONNECTOR... to start with DOC... Please,if you’re going to take the time to make an instructional video, at least make sure that you understand the physical phenomena and call it by its correct name. Not doing so casts doubt on everything you’re saying.

      Also, despite Harley’s draconian remedy which really is just their way of selling you an extra something that’s not needed, simply spraying the contacts, both male & female with WD-40 is a cost effective and non invasive remedy which minimizes/eliminates fretting corrosion in most cases.
