I have to say, you are the only people who do such indepth reviews. I depend on you for showing the pontential awesome, wizardry and splendor in musical gear. Much thanks.. I am going to get this.
Greetings from across the pond. You guys do the best reviews/previews/sample vids on YT. Thanks for all the uploads. Highly informative and no junk. Cheers!
At 14:55 you can tell the difference in the bottom end. When he kicks the kemper in, it sounds like it "tightens" up the bass response. That's a great unit and an excellent demo!
As an AxeFXII guy I thought that this was probably one of the best videos I've ever seen on youtube. Always good stuff from the Andertons guys. I really want to like this thing and think that its fantastic, but I just can't bring myself to either having to rely on others for my tone or having to track down the actual gear, dial it in and then profile it. That's just me though. I don't think that you can argue with the results of this thing though. Its amazing.
I think a point worth making is, even though these guys are steering away from the idea of a Kemper as a live tool, many gigs don't allow you to crank your fav 100 watt amp head to the sweet spot. With the Kemper you can profile your amps loud sweet spot and recall that perfect tone exactly night after night no matter what the volume. IMHO this is gold.
Recorded in a studio with one of these yesterday, awesome bit of kit, profiled my rig and done, now if we ever go back to the studio no need to take my amp, it's all saved on the Producers Kemper. Would be tempted to buy one, but as a musician that only plays in one band i'm not sure I would use it enough!
Great demo. This confirms what I have been saing for years since I started to use modeled cabs. There is more definition in modeled cabs, thats just nature man.
Quite right. The profile is not created by the guitarist playing. It's created from broadband noise signal being put through the amp. However, arguably in the "refining" process after the initial profile is created, the specific guitar does come into play.
I don't have one. But I have two friends who do. And they say that the Kemper is capturing a PARTICULAR amp with a PARTICULAR mic in a PARTICULAR recording environment. BUT...they both say that it captures that particular sound exactly. So if you come up with a sound through a mic in a specific room that you LOVE then the Kemper will capture that sound perfectly. So the real beauty of the Kemper is being able to capture say...Nordstrom in a box.
The Kemper is actually creating and stacking up new algorithms on the fly, containing every variables (IR, room etc...) so it's not exactly the same technology but it's pretty much works the same way. Amp models are almost like compact versions of one of the "snapshot" the manufacturer wanted to use, except they are much more simplified.
Once you dial a kemper in & tweak the settings they are pretty spot on...It is the best profiler/emulater that is available on the market, even if it does look like a prop from the evil lair in an Austin Powers movie...I still love it..As usual great demo & review guys, awsome
The idea of being able to not only create your own tones, but downloading Clapton's or Bonamassa's live rig or SRV's Dumble make this a monumental idea. It's amp modeling 2.0, where you can get an unlimited number of specific personal tones. The online community of shared profiles and the participation of famous players with exotic amp blends could take it over the edge. If you could download the files to a DAW without owning a Kemper unit then, wow! Look out amp companies, this is interesting
Yeah this behemoth took me a solid week to make, broke FCPX, then it broke CS5.5... then I managed to get it all working again with some tweaks. 1.5 GIG worth of Profiling Power \m/
I've got my Kpa two days ago and i can truley agree to the opinions of rob, lee and stick. There is a difference, but it's just a tiny bit of it. I uploaded today profiles of my triple x, i was shoked of how welll the combination was captured... I expected a lot of this amp, but not that much. Thanks for this vid, it's definitly the best on youtube
I've been playing guitar 35 of my 47 years and can honestly say I'm impressed. I'd have to hear a couple of Fenders and Voxs, but pretty sure the metal amps make the grade. My curiosity is really in the process, as many of us out here are wondering what in the heck Kemper did to make this work so well. I have contacted Kemper about 'signal comping' possibilities of electronic organ tone generators- the Wurlitzer,Conn, Thomas, and even some other Hammond models besides the B3. No response. ugh
amazing job out there, great review! they should also do a new category for the noble price and Christoph Kemper should get it! what a product! will check the profiles from this vid in the middle of the next week, latest, and i´m sooo excited :)
Listened to the soundcloud clips and you can hear a small difference but probably in a mix you wouldnt notice and it is super handy as a tool. I mean if you have ten amps and multiple mics on hand all the time everywhere then probably not use it but if you can get 5 great tones you love to record with in a studio and then be able to record them at home it is pretty awesome.
About using it live....a couple of weeks ago I went to a concert of the legendary German band Accept. One of their guitar players was using one and sounded fantastic. For live applications I guess even the most guitar gear knowledgeable person would not hear the difference.
Excellent video. Yeah, there was a subtle difference in tones between amp and Kemper, but oddly enough sometimes the difference was an improvement in tone. You did take a dirty tone (VOX) and clean it up on the Kemper, but wish you would have sampled a clean tone and added gain. I feel that profiling is set to undo modeling, because its not subjected to interpretation of a tone. Its simply the recorded tone, and Im anxious to hear the next model they come out with. Thanks for posting.
Modelling is basically simulating the overall thing with algorithms and all and profiling is taking an "audio snapshot" of an actual amp head, cab, mics or whatever as a whole and replicate the same, exact way the amp reacts, for instance, in the video you may have noticed that the Orange had some kind of subsonic pumping which is quite faithfully reproduced by the Kemper, even though it's not "the real thing" it gets pretty freaking close.
I played through a powered kemper the other day, through a mesa 4x12 = the guitar was totally silent - didn't even know it was plugged in = hit a chord and BOOM! spooky. The clean fender twin profile was awesome! Identical, to my ears, to the real thing. I thought the cleans would be harder to reproduce. BUT the heavy sounds = it didn't' feel... alive - and when i did get feedback = it didn't' sound quite right. I think they need to work on that side of things. If i do buy one I'll be trying out a boss feedback pedal. I also plugged into a beat up first gen 5150 combo = instantly alive = tuneful feedback all over the neck. wanted to buy it straight away. BUT it had to be VERY loud, and it weighed as much as my car. I need to try Kemper with someone who knows it (Guildford is miles away, but i think it's going to have to happen) i was left in a room with it totally naive, and everything sounded like 80's metal; perfect for Metallica/Anthrax covers band! (The gate is amazing.) I totally want it to work, as I cloud save a lot of money being able to record at home rather than a studio, save a lot on FX, and i think, probably have a lot more fun as there's new profiles being made all the time (future proof?) = BUT on my first try = it was lacking a bit of... joy. if they're so amazing why isn't' everyone/the guys in this video using them?
A quote taken directly from Fractal Audio's page for the Axe Fx II: "Tone Matching allows the Axe-Fx to replicate the tone of a reference signal, such as a recording or the feed from a mic on a live amp." So in essence, yes.
To those saying that the Kemper is nowhere near the real thing: It will never at first be dead on. You will never be able to to guess which is which if you tweak it right. Trivium which is in my opinion an amazing band, uses the Kemper after their Peavy and they had someone do the fine tuning for them. Let me make one thing perfectly clear. Tonally, when it was all said and done there is no knowing which is which because they use the Kemper live and without them saying that they arew using it you wouldn't even be able to tell that it wasn't the real amp.
Chris Thieblot Once you capture a really good miked amp/cab combination, it can be run straight to desk at your next recording session. Without resorting to what they are doing here & profiling individual amps, the preloaded amps/cabs & effects are more than enough to keep folks busy for many a day. Tweak the preloaded stuff to your liking, save it, preview it at rehearsal then play it either live or in studio.
@16YearsInHell the kemper goes straight to stick's audio interface, then to logic. The tones were probably how the tones were gauged, i believe it is making sine wave-lik sounds to get all the frequencies & to profile them.
I suppose the way Rob explained the very issue. But if that doesn't matter that much to you, Kemper it is. I use my Line6 HD500 pod directly into my mixing desk and into the computer for recording while my big Laney LH50R and 4x12 cab is gathering dust.
Very interesting, thanks for taking the time to do this. Have the manufacturers of the Kemper gone to such trouble for potential customers? If so Point me in the right direction. It is very cool that Andertons (a retailer has). That’s beyond the capabilities of most in the World. Must visit the store next time I’m home.
The profiling it self takes about about a minute, that's it! All the time goes into mic placement, mic choice, setting the Kemper profiling loop up etc. Ideally you would profile the same amp/cab set-up with multiple mic configurations, SM57, Sennheiser 421, AKG 414, Neumann U87, Royer 121 and so on. I don't know if you can then layer the profiles to create your mic choice blend but you sure could if you used the Kemper for re-amping. Stick
As for the Carrera Amp, to my ears, the Kemper profile sounded fuller, more well rounded and overall better. I just wish they weren't using so much gain (Tube Screamer and all), because we all know digital amps sound great with high gain settings, and not so great with vintage-style drive.
+Nonsense Poopypants They are all the ugliest piece of kit I have seen in a long while. Whoever designed the aesthetics must of liked pastel watercolours and the interiors of pharmacy health stores.
I've got an Axe FX II, and I'm selling it to buy a Kemper. From everything I've heard, seen, and read, the Kemper just sounds better. I've tried to jam through some tone match patches on the Axe FX, and none that I found really did it for me. The big question now is buy the current Kemper, or wait for the rack mountable powered one this spring!
This is so cool. I must get one of these, profile all the amps i can get my hands on, and download and share all the profiles, so all Kemper owners and me will have every amp in the world in a few years. Marble, Tonehenge, Fuchs, Mesa: i will order, profile and return you all! Let the pirating - uuh, profiling begin :)
That's why I've said from the beginning that the Kemper will create a demand for profiles created by major engineers/producers capturing their SPECIFIC sound from a particular signal chain. That way you could buy profiles made by, say, Fredrik Nordström or Andy Sneap or Dennis Ward or whoever in a pro level environment with high end amps, mics and rooms. Then you would have THEIR sound from a particular recording session. And that's already starting to happen.
Very nice demo. You can barely pick up the subtlety of the difference in the sounds between the dark terror and the Kemper. From my ears the Kemper is just a hair thinner on the DAW recording and there is a slight difference when Rob played that was harder to tell with Cap'n on guitar.
the point of this things is to capture specific recording situations for later use to recall it or to build up a library of sounds for instant access without having the fuss of micing and adjusting the wgole setup...... well there ebdless possibilities for it. its definately a game changer in the guitarworld . keep in mind things will develop over the next coming years and countless high class profiles will be available. hence the amp collection on ur usb stick....
You would buy the Kemper instead of amp+cab+mic and put it directly in PA or audio interface for recording.. If you own a nice setup, you can profile it and leave it at home. You can also record with your JCM800 in your own flat without disturbing the neighbors.. If you don't have a shitload of amps at home, you can download other users profiles from Rig Exchange for free - works great!
I can definetly hear loss of attack, the tightness in all cases. Think one handling the amp mentioned something along " play hard powercords during the profiling". If you really hit the chords hard with maximum pick attack you perhaps can improve the profiles to translate the tightness and full range of attack better. You know the max out power chords always came out tighter and harder with real deal. But with basic "volume" riffing it sounds identical.
I can only guess for the Kemper, but i can tell you how i do it on my Pod. Guitar into the guitar port on the pod (obviously), Line-out or Stereo-out (if you have the cables) into the mixing desk Line-in (or recording in)...from there it's kind of subjective depending on what you have hardware wise...i go from the Line-out on the mixer right into the Line-in of the sound card of the PC, but i also saw people go into the microphone recording port and even USB if the gear has the capability.
Funny I went into a music shop yesterday and saw all the amazing amps...... and all I could think of was Kemper... who needs and who can afford all these amps :)
Hi Guys, Another nice video! One thing though the manual states that some distortion pedals like the Tube Screamer can not be profiled accurately, did you find any issues? P.S. There is a Dumble available to download from the Kemper site. Cheers Andy
Interesting! You should record a dry and bare guitar signal then run through both the kempler and the amp then go to the DAW and compare the wave lengths ect. :)
Ok thanks, you explained how the signal is captured instead of simulated by algos etc. But the way those signals are processed into sound information (before then being transformed from digital to audio of course) is the same technology?
It would be awesome if you guys could do a video (if you havent already), with the kemper and different regular guitar cabs, FRFR cabs, and different power amps.. maybe profile an amp then A\B it through cabs instead of studio monitors..
26:20 the moment you turned down the gain and got that clean, slightly broken up tone. I was completely blown away!
ROB. You spoil us! This is by far the best Kemper demo online, thanks so much! I've been curios about this thing for ages.
sometimes i just put your videos on for backround noise, i enjoy the fact that yall just have so much fun doing what you do . thanks alot guys.
Cheers!
Absolutely fantastic; comprehensive, honest, informative and entertaining. This is as good as it gets.
i greatly appreciate the effort put in to make this video, well done guys!
At 14:55 you can tell the difference in the bottom end. When he kicks the kemper in, it sounds like it "tightens" up the bass response. That's a great unit and an excellent demo!
We promised the ultimate Kemper review and we delivered ;-)
As an AxeFXII guy I thought that this was probably one of the best videos I've ever seen on youtube. Always good stuff from the Andertons guys. 0:46 "using some special German magic wizardy thing... Gandalf came up with" LOL! I cant stop laughing. amazing video
this little lunchbox is the best invention since the tubeamp......
I think a point worth making is, even though these guys are steering away from the idea of a Kemper as a live tool, many gigs don't allow you to crank your fav 100 watt amp head to the sweet spot. Wow ... so much hard work put into this. This was one of the best if not THE best review you guys did in my opinion :)
That cab is schmexayyy. Also, nice Kemper demo dude...I'm def. more inclined to pick one of these up now. Awesome.
the pitch shift sounds freakin amazing, great demo
You always stand out from the same-old-same-old. Brilliant.
You guys rule!!! You could have your own TV show, I'd watch it for sure. :), great video. Thanks for the Profiles you made, they are excellent.
22mins and I'm a believer. Going to go out on a limb (albeit quite comfortably) and say it: This thing is freakin' amazing.
The best Kemper video available, thank you guys.
Nice review, it's great how much detail went into this. Well done ;)
I don't have one. But I have two friends who do. And they say that the Kemper is capturing a PARTICULAR amp with a PARTICULAR mic in a PARTICULAR recording environment. Thanks so much for this review! It addressed so many questions I had and was awesomely done. I appreciate it.
It's quite spooky when you're there playing it ;-)
The Kemper is actually creating and stacking up new algorithms on the fly, containing every variables (IR, room etc...) so it's not exactly the same technology but it's pretty much works the same way. Amp models are almost like compact versions of one of the "snapshot" the manufacturer wanted to use, except they are much more simplified.
Kemper is amazing
I asked for it. You delivered. Awesome guys, really awesome thanks
WOW a one-hour video! i'll have to watch this tomorrow when i'm awake / not right now when i should have gone to bed 7 hours ago x_x

you guys have one of the best jobs on the planet
Finally! I've been waiting for a decent review of the Evil Robot :)
the "TS FULL" in front of the cleaned up dark terror is RIDICULOUS!!!!!
amazing job out there, great review! they should also do a new category for the noble price and Christoph Kemper should get it! what a product! will check the profiles from this vid in the middle of the next week, latest, and i´m sooo excited :)
Never mind profiling amps. I want to see a Kemper profiling a Kemper.
Or a Kemper profling a Kemper profiling a Kemper
Maybe it would become self aware?!

Impressed by the sound quality! Also, this video must have taken a silly amount of time to edit, good on you Rob :-]
About using it live....a couple of weeks ago I went to a concert of the legendary German band Accept. One of their guitar players was using one and sounded fantastic. For live applications I guess even the most guitar gear knowledgeable person would not hear the difference.
I love these guys :)
So, it profiles the Amp, Cabinet AND Mic... so potentially all you need to take to a gig is the profiler and go straight into the PA? Mindblowing!
Thanks dude, we really appreciate that ;-)
Modelling is basically simulating the overall thing with algorithms and all and profiling is taking an "audio snapshot" of an actual amp head, cab, mics or whatever as a whole and replicate the same, exact way the amp reacts, for instance, in the video you may have noticed that the Orange had some kind of subsonic pumping which is quite faithfully reproduced by the Kemper, even though it's not "the real thing" it gets pretty freaking close.
I love the Orange Dark Terror. I will probaly keep mine forever..
(The gate is amazing.)
I totally want it to work, as I cloud save a lot of money being able to record at home rather than a studio, save a lot on FX, and i think, probably have a lot more fun as there's new profiles being made all the time (future proof?) = BUT on my first try = it was lacking a bit of... joy.
if they're so amazing why isn't' everyone/the guys in this video using them?
A quote taken directly from Fractal Audio's page for the Axe Fx II: "Tone Matching allows the Axe-Fx to replicate the tone of a reference signal, such as a recording or the feed from a mic on a live amp."
So in essence, yes.

***** I think these things are for live, like you said. Harder to tell.
Actually man there are several TH-camr's that use it for audio mixing as well as musicians using it in the studio
Chris Thieblot Once you capture a really good miked amp/cab combination, it can be run straight to desk at your next recording session. Without resorting to what they are doing here & profiling individual amps, the preloaded amps/cabs & effects are more than enough to keep folks busy for many a day. @16YearsInHell the kemper goes straight to stick's audio interface, then to logic. The tones were probably how the tones were gauged, i believe it is making sine wave-lik sounds to get all the frequencies & to profile them.
these videos always make my day!
I suppose the way Rob explained the very issue. But if that doesn't matter that much to you, Kemper it is. I use my Line6 HD500 pod directly into my mixing desk and into the computer for recording while my big Laney LH50R and 4x12 cab is gathering dust.

personally i don't care what chapters videos are about, they're all awesome
Thanks for the very very very very good demo.
Sick tone/riffing/playing here !!!
Ha ha sorry i've been so long to upload guys, had a few huge changes back at camp Chappers ;-)
I never sit through hour long videos... except this one.
Stick
Probably the most interesting vid you guys have done. Can you download more profiles for this Kemper unit?
Can't beleive I spotted the imperial destroyer before Chappers lol I am such a geek !
Awsome review btw
As for the Carrera Amp, to my ears, the Kemper profile sounded fuller, more well rounded and overall better. I just wish they weren't using so much gain (Tube Screamer and all), because we all know digital amps sound great with high gain settings, and not so great with vintage-style drive.
Thanks mate I appreciate that ;-)
Wow an Hour of awesome. Thank you chappers!
It's decided. I'm getting a kemper. That being said, I'm not too happy it looks like a toaster from the 50's.
Get the rack version then. I'm gonna get the toaster looking one in black around Christmas
+Nonsense Poopypants They are all the ugliest piece of kit I have seen in a long while. Whoever designed the aesthetics must of liked pastel watercolours and the interiors of pharmacy health stores.
+Nonsense Poopypants did you ever get one? do you like it?
You mean a toaster from 20 years ago.
Just get the 19" version in a rack, problem solved.
Toasters from the 50's actually look great! Chromed, made from stainless steel! Kemper looks like a cheap plastic childs toy.
All Andertons demos and features should be this long :)
really awesome job guys!!!! wicked!
Thank you for the demo guys, you are awesome ;)

That Orange amp is killer!
Yes, people who like the sound should buy an Orange amp and NOT a stupid Kemper.
Great vid cheers guys. Now to the bank with my trusty balaclava.
Very nice demo. You can barely pick up the subtlety of the difference in the sounds between the dark terror and the Kemper. From my ears the Kemper is just a hair thinner on the DAW recording and there is a slight difference when Rob played that was harder to tell with Cap'n on guitar.
I saw Keith Merrow use a kemper, I'm suddenly wanting this more and more
the point of this things is to capture specific recording situations for later use to recall it or to build up a library of sounds for instant access without having the fuss of micing and adjusting the wgole setup...... well there ebdless possibilities for it. its definately a game changer in the guitarworld . keep in mind things will develop over the next coming years and countless high class profiles will be available. hence the amp collection on ur usb stick....

I can only guess for the Kemper, but i can tell you how i do it on my Pod. Guitar into the guitar port on the pod (obviously), Line-out or Stereo-out (if you have the cables) into the mixing desk Line-in (or recording in)...from there it's kind of subjective depending on what you have hardware wise...i go from the Line-out on the mixer right into the Line-in of the sound card of the PC, but i also saw people go into the microphone recording port and even USB if the gear has the capability.
the sound they had to send in to the amp sounded like hendrix feedback and dive bombs
Amp of the future.
Funny I went into a music shop yesterday and saw all the amazing amps...... and all I could think of was Kemper... who needs and who can afford all these amps :)
No disrespect to Myx im actually a huge fan, but i would love to hear Rob's voice on this topic
is the guy in blue... " live in your eyes" hilarious vid :D
"I love a bit of the old pink triangle"
I genuinely, physically, LOL'd.
It could just be my Altek Lansings but the orange has a much deeper bass response that I could tell every time.
If the online community embrace this AND they make it rack mountable I think it will be massive.
Great video. But do you need the Mics to "Profile" your amp or others amps? I know you can use the Mics to get a Better Profile.
Hi Guys,
Another nice video!
One thing though the manual states that some distortion pedals like the Tube Screamer can not be profiled accurately, did you find any issues?
P.S. There is a Dumble available to download from the Kemper site.
Cheers
Andy
Interesting! You should record a dry and bare guitar signal then run through both the kempler and the amp then go to the DAW and compare the wave lengths ect. :)
Ok thanks, you explained how the signal is captured instead of simulated by algos etc. But the way those signals are processed into sound information (before then being transformed from digital to audio of course) is the same technology?
hahaha , a little Bad News involved , you're guys are fun Blokes , love your vids
It would be awesome if you guys could do a video (if you havent already), with the kemper and different regular guitar cabs, FRFR cabs, and different power amps.. maybe profile an amp then A\B it through cabs instead of studio monitors..
