Great review Aqua, this is one of those games i played so much back in the day i'm surprised i didn't melt the cartridge, its easily the best game in the series and a masterpiece at that, i wish they had just half of the creativity in modern games as they did back then. this was during the times when developers truly put their heart and soul into the games they were making, i miss those days.
Knuckles story actually takes place after Sonic’s because the death egg and eggman are no where to be found and sonic and knuckles are on good terms in the ending of knuckles story

Awesome review Aqua. Would love to see you do a review or walkthrough of Rollergames or Double Dragon 2 on NES. Either way, looking forward to the next one.
Excellent stuff as usual. =D I'm not really a big fan of Sonic 3 or S&K but I do feel they have their good points. And yeah, S&K feels very anemic without Sonic 3 beefing it up.
I always wondered why knuckles fought a robotic version of Robotnik, while sonic fought the human Robotnik, also how did you get to the doomsday zone with super sonic? i always thought u had to have the 7 regular chaos emeralds and the 7 giant super chaos emeralds to be hypersonic to get to the doomsday zone.
So THAT'S why I thought Sonic 3 felt incomplete. Man, I've been sleeping on this game. Also, I'm realizing how much Sonic Mania cribbed from this game lol
Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were split into two instead of just releasing as a single game in Christmas '94 is because Sega had a contract with McDonald's for a happy meal promotion in the spring of '94, so they split it up to meet said deadline and also have a game for the holiday season to sell. Yes, Knuckles was always intended to be playable in "vol.1" since the beginning of development as evidenced by Sonic 3 "vol. 1" having level routes exclusive to Knuckles even without "vol. 2" locked on (I also vaguely recall the director outright admitting he was always mean to be playable). In a sense he IS playable in "vol. 1" in the multiplayer mode, sans gliding and climbing ability. (Also, the top speed for all characters is the same; only Knuckles' jump height is lower). As for no save files in "vol. 2", I imagine that would've required more batteries to be possible, adding to the cost of "vol. 2", while also being redundant when locked-on to "vol. 1". The whole package was expensive as it is without that extra cost. However, curiously, when both games are locked-on, there is one extra save file added somehow.
@@kawrght I'm sure both "volumes" not fitting on a singe cart is more an effect than a cause; "making up" for the fact that people were expected to pay in excess of 140$ (in 1994 money) for a single game.
@@powpuck5031 actually. Firstly, since you don't seem to know, its videogames, not volumes. Volumes refers to magazines and paper based stuff. Secondly price is only ever handled at the very last month at minimum, and the industry hasn't changed much in price for 40? Or so years. Thirdly they where working on just one cartridge and struggling. Having two cartridges let them do this properly and throw some non canon extra stuff in.
@@kawrght I used "volumes" because Aqualung was. Secondly, inflation is a thing. 140 dollars into 1994 is the equivalent of nearly 250 dollars today. And what does setting the price at the last month have to do with anything? They'd have to charge the customer twice, a, because cartridges cost a lot of money to produce adding to the overhead, and, b, because Sonic was a hot property they could. thirdly, you're conflating cause and effect. Splitting them into to ALLOWED them to do extra shit, so they did.
What would you have rated if Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the Complete Game? Also, you forgot to mentioned when you play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you can get Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails as they are essentially a steroid version of Super Sonic and Super Knuckles. This means getting the Chaos Emeralds from the first 6 stages ( Angel Island Zone - Launch Base Zone) and then getting Super Emeralds in the second half of the game. So, you need to beat 14 Special Stages in order to get these forms
Hope, you can do a review on the Sonic Mania and the infamous Sonic 4 Episode One and Two in the future. But, I know you're going to do a rank on the music again. Wished, the next one is Contra. Also, happy sunday to you.
Oh man, I have such a hard time beating Sandopolis Act 2 without dying. My main issue is that it's SO FREAKING LONG! I mean, I usually Time Out on this stage. I really feel this stage should've been shorter.
Its not long, just confusing and hard to navigate since the stage loops on itself a lot and you can't notice it doing it, tends to be the two crossing sandfall pipe things.
Hooooold on a minute there Aqualung. While I enjoyed the review, there were quite a number of things you didn't mention or showed. *This is related to Sonic 3 and Knuckles.* @UC4awFR-c-zwmp-Ngfx9IPMQ Kinda stole my thunder with the Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails forms which acquired, you unlock the TRUE ending. You don't jump twice, you actually use the insta-shield to transform. While mentioning Knuckles being playable in the Sonic 3 stages, you forgot to say that his version of the stages has some different paths in them. While you did mention two special stages at the ringposts, you only showed one of them. The other puts you in a room where you have to get up high from static looking balls while collecting power ups/ 1ups before the beam catches up to you from the bottom. Going all the way up to the top will exit you from that stage. Finally, no talk about THE MUSIC??? I was waiting for you to mention that compared to the ones from the Sonic 3 tunes, and I find the S&K part of the soundtrack the better of the two. Saving that for a future Rank the Music video??
Yeah I've found myself holding back on going too in depth with the soundtracks in the reviews if I feel like they'll end up in a soundtrack ranking video. I do try to make a brief mention of it though, I'm surprised I forgot to even acknowledge it.
Splitting up the two games was dumb. Sega should’ve kept Sonic 3 as one and built up the hype machine for the 1994 Holiday season. Mario 3 was a great game, but the hype surrounding it was in itself a phenomenon very rarely seen in history.
They'd been trying to get knuckles in the game since sonic 2, tails was made because they couldn't get knuckles to fit or work, as well as time, thats why tails can't do anything in sonic 2 and why sonic 2 is built more for gliding since it was easy to just copy paste sonics data and knuckles was planned to be the way he is from the start. Even sonic 3 itself couldn't quite fit knuckles, splitting the games up though gave them an advantage.
funny. This is a walkthrough for a very old game that is not very cripted so I was about sayng it was unecessary when I noticed through it that I never finished sonic and knuckles, all I did was to finish sonic 3! Now I am mad and need to play it after hearing about the SUPER METAL SONIC that I am ashemed as a sonic fan for not knewing it existed! I have to stop watching the video now because Is truly a spoiler for me. I am shocked
Now lock on the two videos for the ultimate walkthrough

I was kinda hoping for a segment about hyper sonic and the details of the bonus stages but great video.
This game was my 1994 Christmas dream. So many hours devoted to this game, especially when locked on with Sonic 3. This game was a gem for sure!
Man be enjoying all your content please keep them coming brah👍🏾
Do you think you could do a review of Sonic CD as well?
my mom loved sonic spinball

Great review. Sonic & Knuckles itself is a much better game than Sonic 3 imho. Any plans of doing Sonic CD, with its time traveling mechanics?
If you're trying to get all of the Chaos Emeralds, or Super Emeralds, then remember: Lava Reef Zone 2, it's your last chance to do so! Good luck!

Yeah, it's definitely the hardest stage in the game.
Knuckles is fun to play
There's also Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on Genesis.
You're right. I was thinking of the main entries, but it was still a Sonic game on the console.
Dude please do a Super Mario World Walk-through.
The bad ending is if knuckles doesn't defeat metal sonic before the time limit is up.
