There's quite a lot of graphics to process with these multi-screen systems, not to mention background computational tasks and power management, all of which accounts for processor performance. If they really wanted to eliminate screen lag they can boost the processor speeds or multiply the core count - but that requires more battery power, so there is a tradeoff.

As a recent MX owner I'll say I'm glad to see another option in the EV world. I sat and test drove an I-pace and here's what I think:
    - I think it looks better than my MX - but that is subjective and not objective.
    - The I-pace really has no business comparing itself to an X. It's closer to the new Hyundia Kona as far as sizing. My 3 kids feel a little cramped in the X coming off a premium minivan - the I-Pace is even more cramped (especially in headroom).
    - The seats do feel more luxurious than the X seats unless you have the P100D seats with cooling.
    - The interior fit and finish is about the same (2016 Xs had new design issues - other than a tight window actuator my X has been squeak free no interior quality issues). The plastic in the jaguar looks cheaper and feels more fragile than in the X (as X has very few buttons to begin with)
    - Front visibility is a little bit better in the Jaguar when strictly looking at city driving. Back visibility is worse than the X because of the roof rake. The Tesla has no equal for everyone else sitting in the vehicle - my kids point things out on road trips that you can only see through the roofline or that massive windshield.
    - Jaguar is a little bit snappier off the line. 0-60 numbers show it about .4 seconds faster than my 75x. It's the same as a 100X though.
    - Jaguar feels a little bit more nimbler. I'm still afraid to scratch my new X so I baby it taking it into parking lots, the Jaguar is just smaller and easier to maneuver.
    - The controls on the I-pace are too laggy. Several times when testing it would wait 3 to 4 seconds when switching displays. The ergonomics of the X, in my opinion, are just unbeatable though. I did have one display crash on my X which required a reset - so music was down for 2 minutes. It's basically a giant touchscreen computer. Not sure how stable/buggy the I-pace is.
    - The storage/cargo space of the X is pretty much 1.5x that of the I-Pace. I'm not even sure why Jaguar even bothered with the frunk. I-pace can have a usable roof rack which the X will never have. The I-Pace toying capability is about that of a Camry. X has much better towing options and capability.
    - My X is the lowly/cheaper 75KWH variant. At 90% charge I have 211 miles of range which oddly was what Doug showed on the I-Pace. But the I-pace has a 90KWH battery pack. So the I-pace has much worse miles/KWH - it uses well over 400watthours/mile. That's disappointing considering it weighs less and holds 2 less seats and has a smaller cross sectional area. That's where the Jaguar styling (which I think looks better) hurts their efficiency. Obviously the I-Pace has more rolling resistance and a high drag coef as well as less optimal battery management - but they haven't been in business for 10 years like Tesla.
    - The most important thing for me was safety rating. I'm coming off a minivan. I don't really give a rats ass what other people think of the vehicle I'm driving short of me driving a school bus. The engineering that went into designing the Tesla clearly shows if you watch the crash videos. Basically almost no intrusion into where the battery packs are. I still don't trust the self driving system because it is unable to compensate when other humans deviate from normal behavior (like people who decide to do a U-turn on a freeway or switch across 4 lanes in 1 second - the usual driving seen here in Southern California car chase capitol of the world).
It is a nice vehicle and I agree with Doug - if you're considering the other "pace" variants this one is the best. If you must have an electric and love Jaguar then go for it. if you want nearly the same capability as the I-pace at about 1/2 the cost (after tax credits) I would go for a Hyundai Kona instead. If you have the money, nothing beats the X 75, and if you need even more range the 100 is available for about 17K more. If you take road trips or have unpredictable trips then the Tesla charging network is superior to all others. Otherwise, daily charging at home is sufficient for any EV for daily use.
I disagree with Doug's score though. I don't see the "value" in the I-pace. The Hyundai Kona has more value if you're strictly talking lowest price. The X has more value the second you realize you can't care luggage for you family of 5 to the airport with the I-pace, let alone 6 or 7 people.

Very, very thorough review and I hope people read your comment as well as watch Doug’s video before making any rash decisions and selling their X for an I-Pace or anything of such manner. The I-Pace has much potential but I still don’t think it’s on a Tesla level just yet, but I do believe it’s pushing the market and many, many more options that are driving close to home with Tesla are becoming readily available. Tesla continues to adapt and become better, they’ll just have to keep it up if they want to stay on top; that being said, I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon. Tesla is here to stay and I truly believe they’ll become as common as your typical Camry within a decade.

I also own a Tesla 75D but a Model S. I agree with everything mentioned in the OP comment.
I could be nice and say how good the Jag is (it's far better than all the ICE cars on the market) but if you are considering one over a Tesla, that's cool if you love Jags but Tesla is the better car hands down. I won't go into too much detail but the Jag is about on par with a Tesla from 5 years ago.
Hyundai Kona EV and the new Kia EV are seriously better in many ways than this Jaguar. The Koreans are doing amazing work and will probably dominate the EV market as they seem to be far ahead in efficiency and battery technology. Dont get me wrong I love the Ipace but Teslas are VERY special cars.

      @wilmotown 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Tony Tierno I have a feeling the complaints will stay based in the dashboard and not with the drivetrain. Tesla has terrible reliability ratings because they’ve gone way ambitious on engineering bits and pieces. Jaguar’s design is perhaps a little more plain. The climate control stuff will probably be the first complaint. I don’t think it’ll be significantly less reliable than your average Jag.

Tony Tierno Tesla’s product design isn’t all that fresh anymore. The luster is wearing off a little from what they had a few years ago, so their reliability issues are glossed over less than they used to be. Electric cars for the masses will definitely have their growing pains, even when made by the Germans, but the Audi offerings should be pretty appealing, not to mention those of Porsche and BMW as they try to infuse some driving fun along with electric efficiency.

Found this old video and thought I would share my experience with the 2019 IPace. In a word, it’s been fantastic. Doug accurately portrays the pros and cons of the vehicle. I shopped a Tesla model three and Y prior to buying the IPace, but couldn’t get my head around the minimalism for the sake of minimalism that is the interior of the model three and Y. The IPace interior looks like a real car. I have three screens integrated tastefully into the dash plus a heads up display, and all four of these sources of information are configurable. I have information where I need it, switches where it makes sense to have them, and where I need them, and I don’t have to go into a tacked on iPad to do literally everything on the vehicle. I have a real blindspot warning indicator in the rearview mirror, as opposed to a camera image in the lower part of the screen on the iPad in a Tesla. Try checking your left blindspot by looking down and to the right sometime. It just doesn’t work. The layout, materials, and luxury of the interior is an order of magnitude better than the Tesla with its iPad center screen that looks like an afterthought. I have leather, radar, and ultrasonic sensors which Tesla recently - and ridiculously - eschewed. I’m coming out of a 2003 Audi RS6. If you know this car, you know it’s fast and handles well. Compared to the Audi, the iPace is actually a bit quicker off the line, not quite as punchy at high speeds, and handles arguably as well. The only place where the Tesla beats the iPace is the auto pilot system. But frankly, I bought this thing so I could drive it, not be chauffeured. I’ll trade the less capable auto pilot system in The iPace for everything else it does better than the Tesla any day of the week. TH-cam should let me post a picture I took of my iPace parked next to a Model Y. The styling isn’t even close. The IPace looks fluid and organic, designed by Ian Callum, who also designed the latest Aston, Martin sports cars and the Jaguar F type. Jaguar knows how to make cars look good. Tesla knows how to make cars look like dinosaur suppositories. Sure, taste is in the eye of the beholder, but anyone who thinks that the model Y has nice proportions is, well, there’s just something wrong with them.

I charge mainly at home (fast charging is harder on batteries than slow charging) but do fast charge on trips, but I try to avoid fast charging when the battery is above 80% as that is hardest on the battery. If out of town for a week or so I leave it at about 70% and it doesn’t seem to drain much, a couple of percent a week maybe. I have 25,000 miles on it and it still shows the advertised 230 range. I purchased a 2019 I Pace this week which had come in off lease. Amazing car that I can attest holds up well after 20,000 miles. I'm impressed that the battery does not appear to have declined at all as it's still showing 230 miles range with a full charge. I never thought of owning a Jag before as I was a little scared about British build quality. This car is built by Magna Steyr in Austria who also build the MB G wagon's, the BMW 5 series and a lot of other luxury cars. As these cars come onto the used market the represent a great value.

Five years is well within the buffer imposed on the battery capacity.
You never get to drive the full range on an EV's battery-- they deliberately hold some of the battery capacity in reserve, which is gradually taken up as the battery supply degrades over time. As old cells go bad, the previously untouched cells are activated to take their place. That's why no one sees any degradation in range until 10+ years, when that buffer is finally used up.

Then in the background a process will start to operate the mechanical part with the variable based on the user input for example setting the A/C to 21 degrees. but span What? None of that made any sense. Tesla makes its battery packs in Nevada, but assembles their cars in Fremont, California. While the warranty on a Tesla battery lasts 8 years, Model S drivers who own 2012 and 2013 models with 100k plus miles are reporting only 5-10% degradation, meaning that battery pack could conceivably last 300k plus miles. The packs can then be recycled to make Powerwalls.

Here's my taken the new offerings from the various manufacturers. There's no question that the quality of the interiors are quite possibly superior to that of the Teslas (I drive a Model 3 dual motor and also own a 2018 Mercedes E300).
However there are two MAJOR components that simply do not compete yet with Tesla. One, the supercharger network. When you buy a Tesla, you also buy into their already established network of superchargers.
This is invaluable because you're only competing with other Teslas for charging as opposed to competing with say a leaf or a volt or basically any other EV. Also the Tesla network is incorporated into your maps on the GPS in the car. It will even show you real time supercharger availability so that you don't go there for nothing and have to wait. And this is where point number two comes in.....The technology.
In my Model 3, I have a huge screen which is almost exactly like a huge iPad and works in the same manner as well. Tesla offers over-the-air updates which no other car I have seen to date does. In other words, once you buy this I-Pace, you're pretty much stuck with the features it came with. Teslas evolve over time with new features just like the iPhone has.
In the two months I have had my Model 3, I have more features now than what I started with! And the easy of use of the screen is simply pure joy. I can request GPS directions to home or work with one swipe of my finger and the speed at which it does the calculation is incredible. Also, no other system that I have tried to date beats the Tesla Autopilot system.
Look at how they still offer a key fob to enter the car. The Tesla key is my phone! So that's one less thing I have to carry in my pocket. And if that doesn't work, Tesla gives you a literal "credit card" that opens your doors and "starts" the car. Why can't these "luxury" car manufacturers do that??
Yes, the Jaguar and even the Audi may be more impressive in terms of luxury appointments, but the tech is still old school. It's old school thinking. Tesla is definitely more forward thinking. Just my .02c.

That screen is a giant safety problem and tesla have been told many times, and yes the super charger network is nice, but how often do you really use it?

I can't agree with you more. If I can I'll giVe you ten thumb ups. The supercharging network, the autopilot, over the air update, the phone key, and how minimal and efficient the interior is, it's all so modern and futurist that no competitors at this point can even compete with. Once you have a Tesla, you never think about other cars.
