    I think your bottom bed should be herbs and easy to grow vegies. My thoughts would be lavender, basil and rosemary for the scent, lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes for the food, nasturtiums and other edible flowers for the colour.

      Is there enough direct sun? Most herbs and veggies want 6-8 hours of exposure 😊

    Hi! I am an avid gardener, but south east. I highly recommend looking up plants native to your area. That will increase the native pollinators and help the ecosystem. They’ll also be more low maintenance than a plant that isn’t native to your soil/climate. Look for native pollinator plants that are companion plants to one another (I usually pick three per area, and two of each of those species). Then in another area, plant another companion collection to build a diverse garden. 🐝

    MaCenna, to avoid disappointment with gardening, make sure your plants are appropriate for the space you are planting them in. Roses like a lot of sun, gardenia and camellias do better in the shade. The corner that you have your seating looks pretty shaded. Also, be sure to amend your soil before planting new things. Good luck. Looks beautiful, always feel inspired after watching your videos

    • @PilotCristina
      @PilotCristina ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yup amend the soil. I’ve learned that the hard way where I live. I wondered why plants weren’t thriving or dying. It was the clay soil that some plants don’t like. At the places where I had raised beds with beautiful soil the plants always did better.

      Impatients LOVE shade, but add so much color. I think they would be an added focal point in your seating corner. Good luck, Macenna. Thank you for always inspiring me! ❤️❤️❤️

    As a self taught gardener and someone who loves an eclectic mix of plants I would give the advice to not focus on the flowers but on the leaf variations of your plants. Typically then your garden will always look beautiful and if anything flowers that's a bonus. If you study garden magazines you'll see gardens with an array of plants with different leaf colours, not just flower colours.
    Take a look at coral bells. They're easy to grow and keep to there own little "mound". They have incredible variations of leaf colours from bright red, to pinkish, to bright and dark greens, browns and purples to al out black. Sometimes people do just gardens of different coral bells. Plus they get the most whimsical flowers. They would do so well along the bottoms of your gardens with the ivy - depending of course on that slope. Good luck! ❤
    P.S. I've recently fallen in love with "Black Pearl" coral bells and they might add some variation without taking away from your other plants and colours.

    pay attention to how the sun moves through your backyard and get plants that love shade for under your trees and sun loving for closer to the house, I don’t think a rose will thrive in that corner because most need full sun, 6-8 hours at least. But know that you can change and move plants whenever you want, nothing is permanent and don’t feel bad! Looking so cozy!!

      You can dry the lavender by hanging it upside down with twine! It looks so cute! And then - crush up the dry lavender, add it to a mason jar with white vinegar, cover and let it infuse for 2 weeks. Then strain the lavender-infused vinegar (to get rid of the dry lavender bits) into a glass spray bottle of half lavender-infused vinegar and half filtered water. And now you have an all-purpose cleaning spray! Lavender is awesome for cleaning! I grow lavender and have been doing this for the past two years ✨❤

    • @CNhuman28
      @CNhuman28 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately lavender needs full sun (6+ hours of unfiltered sunlight), so I don't think it would be a good fit for this area.

    Don’t forget to seal up the holes from the dish! Your flower beds probably need something like mushroom dirt to add nutrients to the soil. When you choose plants consider how much room the roots need to flourish. It doesn’t look like there is much room for larger plants on the bottom bed. Your patio looks so much better! I really love the lights.

    It's going to look beautiful!! Don't worry about the agapanthus! They flower later in the summer. You could take them out and put them in pots as they actually really like having their roots restricted in pots. They flower well that way. A gardener told me once the only time to repot an agapanthus is when it breaks the old one (!!!) ❤❤

    For the garden. Make a sketch of the house and garden and put in north and south East and west. Then Take photos of everything and go to a plant market and ask someone to help,you. They usually do this for free and hope you will buy the plants they suggest from their place.

    I think going to a local garden center with a picture of your space would be super helpful. The people there will have experience gardening in your area and can help point you in the right direction. Be sure to also check the tag on the plants your purchasing to ensure they will thrive in the conditions your putting them in.

    Your agapanthus look healthy enough. They come from South Africa (where I live) and they are extremely hardy. They should bloom around mid-summer. Something to consider with the colour of the flowers is that they don't all bloom at the same time. This means that you can have one colour scheme for summer and a different one for winter.
    You are clearly going to be an excellent gardener and I so agree with you, gardening makes you feel alive. It is very creative, but the difference is that plants never quite grow the way you think they will and the garden looks different month to month. I don't think anyone can ever be depressed if they have a garden they look after.
    I love the way your backyard now looks. Those lights look magical! You are just so talented.

      @@emmaderuiter5192 This was my thought....so many varieties (100s of them) and some have a tall flowering stalk. Plus they are perennial...hard to kill them. Wasn't aware that they don't go dormant in Cali. MaCenna will do her research though and see what she can come up with!!!

    This turned out great! As someone else mentioned Garden Answer is great inspiration. Laura's aesthetic is similar to yours. She loves textures and year-round interest. Maybe check out a local landscape nursery in your area. I find the employees are usually more than happy to help find the right plants and provide great suggestions. And please be mindful of that hillside. I'd plant for erosion control too.

    It's a gorgeous makeover! If you want something big and blooming in the corner under that tree, maybe take a look at hydrangeas? There are tons of varieties and they are more shadow tolerant than roses. I would also advise not to plant flowers one by one, but make groups of them with shorter plants closer to the patio and higher on the back. So you'll have a more interesting look

      Wonderful suggestions, Lena. Was about to make a similar remark. You are my kind of gardener. I live in the Austrian alps in Tirol. Very envious of the plants and seasons of California. We are having a very cold and brezzy spring. The mountain tops are full of snow and skiers still abound!

    It's about 330 pm in Florida. I have been working in my front gardens since about 730 am. I love my grand oaks, but I despise leaves. And I'm not finished. And I have been putting down gravel rather than mulch for a couple years. It's great doesnt wash away, and really helps with the weeds. My helper and I finished refreshing all the paths last week. All this tiring work is worth it in the end. Hang in there.
    Your garden and patio is looking lovely. The furniture is really nice. Both of your properties are so pretty
    Now watching you set the table I suddenly have a boost of energy to keep at it today. BTW I'm 73.😊

    MaCenna, do not be afraid to cut all the Ivy way back. When you cut it back, then clean underneath. Your other plants need to be taken out, and the soil needs to be refreshed. Fertilize your flowering plant in early spring and again around September. I use Bio-tone. It is hard to over fertilize your plants with Bio-tone. You don't want to kill your plants with too much fertilizer. If you want to wait until next year, just make sure you fertilize your plants as soon as possible.

    Always choose plants that are good in shade or sun. They will grow better. Scraps (not meat) buried around plants will help feed them. Coffee grounds around camellias and azaleas because they need acid soil. Good luck!!

    Roses would be a disaster behind that seating area. I would suggest oak leaf hydrangeas instead. Roses need sun. Hydrangeas would be better. I also agree with the other posters. You need to add compost to your beds to feed your plants.

    Camellias are shade loving plants that can go to part shade when older. They are beautiful, but those geraniums are goners. They need more sun. Move them before they die. Poor things. I think instead, you can get beautiful color from Begonias in that space. The lights are gorgeous, and you are so talented at decorations. I could not do any of that, but I understand plants.
