- I’m so excited to share the outdoor project that we have been working on! It was a lot of days in the heat to accomplish this makeover but it was SO worth it! Some small additions and a new layout made such a difference and elevated the whole space! You'll find me here all summer and by the fire in Fall!

Looks good! You may want to install an electrically controlled pool cover. Just flick a switch, and it opens and closes. It protects the pool from debris, and you use less pool chemicals because of less UV exposure. The cover gets cleaned a few times a year with a cover cleaner.
You brought the area up to another level. Wonderful space to enjoy.

I so enjoy seeing your excitement covering the bricks with astroturf. It must have been the same joy that those who covered their wood floors with wall-to-wall carpeting felt back in the day.
Wonderful as usual. Please put some sand (play sand will be fine) in the bottom of your fire pit. It helps dissipate the heat from the burning logs, and your pit will last longer. And I know it usually doesn't rain often in SoCal (this year being an exception), but you'll want to get a cover for it too to ensure it lasts. Great job!

There’s a hole in the bottom of the fire pit, to stop rain water sitting in the bottom.

@@nyphira I was replying with regards to the sand. The hole in the bottom will mean the sand will drain out 😝😝

I would never glue that down. It will stay where you put it without all that. And if you decide you want to take it out, it wouldn't be a nightmare to get up. But its your home so you get to do your own thing. Glue is a nightmare.

You are going to need a blower that vacuums so you can keep care of that turf. My suggestion is for your to make Kesley her own potty area that you can keep clean in that corner around the door you come out of. Dogs will go back to the same area once it has their sent. You can use the same turf, put it in a wood frame or over the drain area. I would not encourage her using the turf by the pool. Also Kensley should really be using the front yard away from the coyotes and never alone, should be on lease.

I absolutely love what you’ve done. It is absolutely beautiful! I hope you’re happy with the turf. My youngest son, who lives in San Diego, just had his entire backyard turfed because he thought it was going to be lower maintenance, but it’s turned out to be very high maintenance, as it’s difficult keeping it clean. Spraying it with the hose just doesn’t do it. I really hope you don’t have the same issue. 😊

I never thought I’d see you use fake grass ever. As someone who’s tried doing something similar, albeit in a smaller place and not around a pool, turf does not last well (and I even bought the expensive kind), it just stops looking good very fast.
Plus it emits a lot of micro plastic, and how are they going to leaf blow without the “sand” disappearing.
Everything else looks great 😊
My daughter had has the long blade turf in and area for 5 years, and it still looks great, not worn, and since it’s on the south side, it takes a beating.
My parents turf looks great and they’ve had it for years. Guess it truly depends on the brand and not the price.
I'm still a bit baffled at letting Kinsley pee on it...that will discolour it fast (besides the hygiene issue)

It was a lot of brick...this is the first time I've ever liked the use of faux grass. It looks amazing!

You can put stones or thin pavers in the cutouts to level them off with the turf. I think it would look nicer.

just my opinion, but I personally think the cut-outs (especially for the steps) cheapen it a bit, it makes it looks that much more like turf because you notice how thin it is and just highlights that the turf is just placed on top of the brick

Id recommend adding some kind of border to the edges of the turf so it looks finished and inset and not like it's floating on the brick
I didn't think I would like the grass at first because I love brick, but it really gives it that WOW factor. It's gorgeous & that pop of green is perfect. It looks so much warmer & inviting. Good job! 😁❤

I absolutely love what you did in your backyard! I love the addition of the artificial turf as it breaks up the brick. It really adds to the coziness of the pool area. So fabulous!
I worry about you glueing the turf to your beautiful brick. My neighbor did the same with turf and a cement patio. When it came time to remove the turf they had to grind the glue off the cement.
I’m usually not a fan of turf but I think this looks fantastic! It really adds softness and breaks up the brick. And it’s not like it’s replacing what was once planted or could be planted so not removing green space and biodiversity with plastic. Great addition in this case! Especially in California where you shouldn’t be watering a lawn anyways. I knew I should never doubt you, you always create fantastic perfection!!!

Looks good. You may have to trim back some of your bushes near the solar lights in order for them to catch the rays during the day but what a good idea they are.

The faux grass really looks fake & is a miss. I know sometimes you need temporary fixes but this is one I'd rather just live without until future solutions can be done.

Looks amazing, but I have fake grass and my dog hates it! And it gets HOT!!!!! Don't be fooled. It will be hot just like the brick! I cannot even walk on mine and my dog doesn't go near it during hot summer months.

Just thought you’d want to know that numerous studies have shown that chemicals identified in artificial turf, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are known carcinogens, neurotoxicants, mutagens, and endocrine disruptors.
While it looks great, it’s not great on your health. You may want to consider removing the turf, especially when you have a little one crawling around on it.
Great outside makeover. I would have never thought of cutting out the turf from under the loungers. Good job!!

Oh boy, you're going to regret glueing that turf to your brick patio .. 😫 It's going to degrade and in about two years the turf is going to look bad, with leaves and Kinsley using as her bathroom it will be a constant cleaning episode. It looks very nice now, but the maintenance is going to be a monster! I usually love all your creative ideas, but this is going to go south quickly. Sorry, just being real...

@@ang_131 You mean, have I experienced artificial turf deteriorating in the hot sun day after day, the harsh elements of the outdoors; wind, rain, dirt and debris buildup, edges beginning to fray and come apart, ending up in the pool, clogging the filters, getting thread-bare patches, having to scrape industrial strength glue off the bricks when it's all finally being pulled up because it's decayed and not pretty anymore??? Nope.
My neighbor has artificial turf now for several years and no degradation
I did fake grass and have to say I agree ! Mine only looked good maybe 5 years

It's beautiful! The grass visually cools the whole area. One suggestion: On the side of the pool opposite the chaise lounges there is a bush that looks a bit scruffy. I think that would be a perfect spot for a beautiful hydrangea like an Annabelle or Incrediball. (If it gets full sun, you'll probably want a panicle hydrangea, like a Little Lime or Bobo.)

MaCenna, I’ve always adored your creations and perfectionism levels. Been a dedicated fan since your first year. Kinsley is the most adorable dog 😍 and I always wanted to have your mom as a friend if she accepts me 🥰 Your self thought interior skills have traveled to a rare dimension and you have a great story to be proud of. You usually find ways to elevate spaces and make them look whole. I don’t know what happened here, I just think the turf and cutouts idea are not up to your standards, sorry for my honesty, I couldn’t say it in a better way, my bluntness and inability to use political ways in delivering a message sometimes get me in trouble 🤣 just wanted to mention that you could’ve gotten away with outdoor rugs or some sort of low wood decking etc.. However, it’s your house and you can experiment all you want. Also, would that glue come off easily from those beautiful bricks? I love those solar lights, all your furniture, your plants and the epic edit on 16:44 👌
People in these comments are being unfairly harsh about the turf. I am not a fan of fake grass either but MaCenna explains her reasons well and it makes sense for this space. Time will tell if it works out but that is part of renovating - trialling and LEARNING. Chill out, people! (Although in fairness I hope that glue doesn't ruin the brick if they do change their mind on the turf!)
