    It would look much better if the black on the fireplace was more flat looking as opposed to the glossier finish. If it was flat black it would tie in with the kitchen cabinets much better.

      Flat paint collects more dust and is a fire hazard. Glossy paint is easy to clean. Also flat paint collect fingerprints too. Idk if you ever had a fireplace but you want a easy clean. So Idk about flat paint on fireplaces or near kitchens

  • @JackieBluXO

    The makeover is lovely and thoughtful. I do have some suggestions. The ceiling fan has a purpose which is to move the air in the home and since the living space is within the kitchen space, it will come in handy. The entryway doesn’t need 5 lights. The sconces are beautiful and the replacement for the booblight will be sufficient for lighting needs. The 2 lamps on the entryway table are too much and take away from the board and batten wall. In this space, less would be more. A longer runner would be nice.

    • @LindaKayHolevas
      @LindaKayHolevas ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I personally never use overhead lighting in my home. It’s too bright. I much prefer to have lamp lighting & I love the lamps on the entry way, although I understand what you are saying. If the lamps were a tad bit smaller, it would be perfection😊

    I personally don’t love when you so entryways with the double lamps on the table, especially across from the double sconces, but it’s very warm and cozy now! Videos like this are so fun

    Agree with the fireplace painted a flat or matt black. Being shiny, takes away from all the other beautiful decor in the home. Your eye goes directly to the fireplace because it is large and sticks out, glows, reflects all the light.😊

    Between the blue cabinets and super bright lighting, the kitchen has such a cold look. I hope you encourage them to swap out the light bulbs for something warmer!

      That's what I was thinking - try a 5x7 in the same rug. And if it's too wide, buy another 3x5 and put them together, end to end. It looks like there's plenty of space.
      Otherwise, I love the entry!

  • @mjsimm
    @mjsimm ปีที่แล้ว +92

    Looks wonderful, for the hall runner I would go to a carpet store and find the remnant section. Find a piece you like and have them bind it. That's what I've done at my house and have been able to fit in odd sized shapes in my old shack. lol I pay $4 and linear foot to have them bound.

    • @Lucinda_Jackson
      @Lucinda_Jackson ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've done that, too. I really love the rug from Target, though. The problem with carpet remnants is they lack interesting color variation and an organic feel that a rug can give.

    Yay, for a more modern makeover. Yes, you need a second rug at the entrance, maybe the same one but going horizontal at the door, and that tv looks so big and lonely. Maybe put a literal frame around the tv.

    I think the cold air vent should be painted the same all colour as the entry so it disappears too. Not a fan of the entry rug as I think it's too small. The woodwork is stunning...great job o the rest of the makeover!

      Was going to suggest that too.

    • @Lucinda_Jackson
      @Lucinda_Jackson ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm surprised that doesn't bother me more. I noticed it, but thought 🤷🏼‍♀️. I think it's not too bad because it's in such a small space surrounded by lot of that color on the door. And its shape is so reminiscent of the spaces in the board and batten wall. But we're really only seeing it from this one angle, looking toward the front door. It might appear more prominent if facing the console piece with the mirror.
      ETA: I was watching on my phone and opened my laptop to take a look - now that cold air return is all I can see! 😂

    I think your friends benefitted from the Castlery furniture, so it was a good deal for them. You said there was more changes to be done and I agree. One the fireplace needs a makeover. It could use a fire screen, a mantel of some sort so you can have some art on all that brick. I would hope they will agree to let you de gloss it some how. Some stacked wood in a holder would be nice. As is, it is just a black hole. I'm sure your friends will continue to make it more their own in time.

  • @shawnrobertson9618

    Nice start! I think you could go much larger on the entryway rug. Something vintage could bring more warmth. Or a checkered rug to bring the 2-tone of the entry console onto the floor? Did you consider painting the front door black (closer to the dark color in the entry console? Once they move in and start to personalize it with art, it will start to come to life (like your place is). Great base.

    • @camillecipri593
      @camillecipri593 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Especially after she added lamps to the entry table, the sconces actually seemed completely unnecessary. I totally get that they were already wired on that side of the wall, but yeah, I think lighting on the opposite wall makes the most sense.

    • @anitawoollard7087
      @anitawoollard7087 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am thinking maybe there used to be a storage cupboard running along where the entry table is and they had the entry table in between the sconces? That would account for why she found the corridor a bit wide for a rug? The air con outlet would have been hidden by the longer cupboard. Perhaps before selling, they made some alterations to make the entrance wider.

    I suspect that after your friends have lived with the black fireplace, they will regret their choice of color. There's a beautiful Behr paint, Cracked Pepper, which is darker than deep charcoal but not such a harsh black. It also has the same deep, almost navy undertone that the kitchen cabinets have. There are so many pot lights in the kitchen, living room. I don't really think you need a center light fixture at all, especially if you're going to add a table lamp. Maybe consider moving it to the dining room? Also, dimmer switches on pot lights would be great. Finally, the entry looks gorgeous. From a design perspective I think 5 light fixtures in that small space are way too many. A smaller, more contemporary lamp (maybe with a metal dome shade) for the credenza wouldn't compete with the sconces and overhead light. Agree with everyone's suggestion of 5 x 7 rug. Castlery furniture is really nice!

    You did a great job! Everyone has their own style and taste, you did a great job for your friend’s home. The husband and wife has different styles and you Macenna brought them together in a cohesive way! So many homes are so beautiful just in all white or black. To each his own. As a stylist you create for your clients not yourself! Great job!

    Wow! You sure got a lot of “what you should do different “ comments on here! I really think you did a beautiful job. It is so hard to tell what a space looks like unless you are there. And you are doing what the homeowner wants. Not what you want! So GREAT job! I always love what you do!

    Living in South Carolina, ceiling fans are a must. We have them in nearly every room except bathrooms. They allow us to not have to run our air as cool as we would if we had no fans. Lots of energy savings. ❤️😊

    I really liked the makeover and the realistic touch to it, since most peoples homed grow and evolve with them but for the time being they have a cozy livingroom space in their home where they can wind down while tackling all the other spaces in their house.
    Also I'd add either a bench opposite the cabinet or a chair next to it in the entryway for changing shoes :)

    sooo lovely macenna! i think making those bowls into pendant lights is such a good idea BUT placing them above the kitchen table in the dining room would make it feel so intimate and calm and warm 🥰 i think it would warm up the black table and complement the chairs! i’m a sucker for a super intimate and low lit dining room so i would 100% try that out if it were meeee!
    also, my OCD wants to chime in and say the fig tree would look good elevated and placed on the base of the fireplace right behind it! like, same exact spot just on that ledge to elevate the space just a tiny bit! 😉🤭

      Yeah, I agree. I think the lighting temperature in the kitchen appears much cooler than the living room so the black paints (and even wall colors) in each look drastically different rather than complementary. Or at least that how it looks on video, might be different IRL. Still such a lovely makeover though!

    Love the board & batten but I do think black shades on the pair of entry table lamps (like in your house) would add more depth and look more sophisticated (and tie in the kitchen cabinets, fireplace and console trim). Right now the entry is a bit one-note.... 🤔

    It all looks SO GOOD MaCenna! Just a note to help protect the hardwood floors, and the island counter top, if your vases and that gorgeous pot you used for the Fiddle leaf fig aren't sealed inside, use a large glass jar inside the vase, and a saucer inside the decorative pot, as the porous nature of them will leach water through.

    I would have loved to see the fireplace plastered over.. similar to the cottage! Could be a creamy plaster or a smooth gray concrete 😍 I just feel that it could have really been a moment. I definitely think the tv wall would look great with a similar board and batten treatment to tie everything all in.

    Love you MaCenna! I have to echo a lot of the comments about the fireplace, the entry rug, the chain and lack of cohesion. I also have a hard time with the height of the sconces in the entry. The neck makes the light source way too high. Maybe since you have the table lamps in there now you can simply patch up those sconces? Or find sconces that have a lower profile.
