Lax laws and low taxes have turned Indonesia into the world's third largest market for tobacco products. Targeted by the industry 's relentless marketing, Indonesians start young and die young.
"If I 'd known I 'd get this disease I would have quit a long time ago." Ujang has terminal lung cancer. At 45, he is the victim of a habit which is killing millions in his country. Most Indonesians don' t believe that smoking is bad for their health and the industry shamelessly cashes in on their ignorance. "Indonesia is a rogue state when it comes to tobacco control", explains David Stanford of Indonesia 's Consumers Federation. Low taxes keep cigarettes cheap while aggressive marketing portrays smoking as cool. At a rock festival advertisements are everywhere and free cigarettes handed out to teenagers. Health campaigners denounce the usual suspects: "Philip Morris is continuing to target youth in Indonesia." And as always, the industry is unrepentant.

Why Indonesian Government permits this Ghastly Western noise POP help advertise the cigarette smoking habit when their own, Indigenous music, Keronchong is far better listening. yet it is considered 'COOL" By the ignorant young to listen to WEstern POP Garbage. I started smoking since my teenage, got addicted to cigarettes. Spent my whole life fighting Cigarettes addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Congrats! I'm really happy for you that your wife decided to help you. I always admire those who beat their addiction. Knowing it's possible to fix your life knowing there's people out there that have done what I thought was impossible gives me hope I will make it through as well. Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

Smoking is shit and should be completely banned. I smoked myself and i quit 7 month ago and i am glad that i don't think about cigarettes anymore, i hope it stays like that and i stay strong. Because i was a smoker myself i can say that smoking is not lifestyle, alot of smokers say it relaxes them and it is a free choise and that they enjoy it but the thruth is you are llying to your self i realised it after i quit, you loose nothing if you stop you only win, you win your free will back again and you win your health. I regret it that i even started smoking, i don't want to listen to my parents back then. I am glad that my parents quit too, three years again and my grandparents quit too. Smoking has no good side, it only destroys your health and even if you are one of the lucky persons that gets old even as a smoker you loose allot of money for a senseless addiction.

@@cczsus6513 no, cigarettes are no real relief, the relief only comes from you getting rid of the withdrawals. If you don't smoke you do not feel more bad then before, you feel better because you don't have the shitty feeling anymore wich you have if you don't smoke to make your withdrawals go away, you feel better in general. You always feel like the way you feld if you smoked a cigarette even better. Other Drugs are no option either. It is a fake relief that you get from cigarettes so it do nothing. Other drugs really have a effect so you would really feel a relief as long as you are not addictive. You only should use drugs (alcohol includet) for fun not to forgett a shit day at work or something like that, it only makes it worse in the longterm.

I'm Indonesian, and yes, tobacco is still a huge thing in Indonesian culture. It's difficult to make it go away, because corporations like Djarum are indeed huge and very influential. Djarum doesn't only sell tobacco now, they also own banks and e-commerce sites. Tobacco in Indonesia is like junk food in the US. It's unhealthy, addictive, sold by huge corporations, but everyone's consuming it. It's like, you can't make Americans stop drinking Coke even though people know that it's unhealthy and the Coca Cola company is trying to get their customers even more hooked. These corporations even manage to put junk food in your children's school lunches to get them addicted at a young age. That's comparable to how they're trying to sell tobacco to kids in Indonesia.
By the way, my dad managed to quit smoking after being addicted for 30+ years, because he doesn't want to die from cancer like his own dad. Actually my grandfather used to own a tobacco shop, and he used to chew tobacco himself. My dad started smoking when he was in his late teens, like a lot of other Indonesian men. But I'm glad he stopped before it's too late. He hasn't smoked for almost 10 years now.

Lost my brother to lung cancer on Dec 20, 2016. He was cremated and I have his ashes. I recall seeing him in the hospital a few days before his death. How he suffered. Yet there are those who keep smoking. The tobacco industry is powerful. Pair that with millions of shallow thinking people and it will always have bodies upon which to prey. One caveat. No one held a gun to my brother's head and made him smoke. We used to discuss it frequently when he was younger. He always promised he was going to stop. So it goes.

Menthols, black and mild, American spirits, reds, BLK grape flavored, cigarellos, cigars, acid cigars, it all added spice to a stressful and ironically dull lifestyle. Recently it hasn't done anything for me so I stopped for a couple of weeks. I tried an acid toast cigar to celebrate my last night shift and I ended up getting bronchitis. Lesson here is don't start in the first place, cause it sucks to start and it hurts to stop and it's suffering to heal.

With all that we've known about the dangers of smoking for 50 or 60 years now, it's incredible to hear the statements from people in Indonesia. Yes, a lot of it IS flat-out denial, but others are skeptical about the risks of cancers and respiratory illness. If they smoke, or they are constantly getting it secondhand, they surely must see a connection between cigarettes and disease. I stopped being influenced by American ads for most vices (junk food, booze) long before adulthood. It really is children and teens being the most influenced by tobacco ads, or if not by ads then by the celebrities who openly use tobacco products (and who are paid to endorse them in Indonesia).

The sports advertising in today's Indonesia is identical to the sports advertisement in the 1980s and 1990s West. I remember seeing the name "Marlboro" on every Formula 1 billboard, helmet, and uniform back in the day. Anti-smoking initiatives take more time to travel across the world and are hindered by an industry worth billions. I don't understand why the presenters are so shocked. Also, although not nearly as bad as in Indonesia, European adults puff a little too much to this day still, despite their access to information, strict policies, and a ban on cigarette advertisement.
