- Life these days is pretty sweet for James Taylor, the musician-songwriter famed for such hits as "Fire and Rain," "Carolina In My Mind" and "Sweet Baby James." Jane Pauley visited Taylor at his home in the Berkshires of Massachusetts to talk about his audio memoir on his early days in North Carolina, and a new album exploring the songs Taylor loved growing up, titled "American Standard." (This story was originally broadcast on February 2, 2020.)

I was born on 1990 and spent my whole life on Hip-hop and R&B. The day i heard Carolina on my mind and fire and rain is the day my music evolved.
@Marco Deieio Remember JT is Justin Timberlake to those under a certain age.
dumb boyiam Thats literally what i thought at first.
Beautiful music alright, the best.
I guess that was the day it changed your perspective/definition on what good music is. ❤️🙂 I love JT, too. My father said he was very famous when he was young.
I'm so glad you your music evolved! He's great! There is so much wonderful music from James Taylor's time, believe me. I hope you will continue to evolve musically because you will also evolve spiritually as well.
Several years ago, while on vacation, I was sitting at a table outside a cafe waiting for my son to get his food when I looked across the way and there sitting at another table was a gentleman who looked very familiar. Is that? IS it? At that moment our eyes locked and he recognized that I recognized and there was slight glimmer of panic in his eyes. Yep. It was James Taylor. So I just nodded and mouthed, "Thank you." A look of relief came over his face and he smiled slightly and nodded back. The best celebrity encounter I have ever experienced.
@CindyCookswithTupperware Your encounter reminds me of a very similar one I had with him. In the late 80’s I was living in NYC, and for a brief time I worked as a receptionist for The Hit Factory recording studio. One day I happened to look up and over to the side where a man was standing, apparently waiting for someone to come out of one of the offices. Same as you, “our eyes locked”, I suddenly realized who he was (I hadn’t really seen him since he didn’t have the long hair.) He noticed the light bulb go off in my head, I noticed he noticed…I’m shy, he’s quiet and reserved…my instincts and my personality led me to just nod and say simply “hi.” He smiled, nodded and said hi back…and that was that. A sweet memory indeed. Years later I saw him several times in concert…and that was when I truly became a fan of his music. Though I had grown up with it…I’d always been more of a fan of other musicians and groups…but that crystal clear and fluid voice, those songs…later in life I really go it. He is a national treasure. Amazing he still sounds like he does…glad he’s still doing his thing.

That's awesome! James Taylor's music has been such an important part of my life that it would have been very hard for me not to have walked over to shake his hand.

When I was in medical school - way back in the late 'seventies - I worked for a while with a local obstetrician. He was a real Southern gentleman in all meanings of the phrase, genteel and kind. As we chatted one day during a procedure, the subject of music came up. He related that when he was a young resident in North Carolina - Chapel Hill, I think - he'd often been a guest at the home of an older doctor whose son later became a musician. "After dinner, the young man would sometimes sing and play the guitar for us. He was somewhat troubled but VERY talented. I heard that he later did well for himself as a musician." "What was the doctor's name?" I asked. "Doctor Taylor," came the reply. I felt the hair rise on the back of my neck. "What was the boy's name?" "I don't remember." "It wasn't James, was it?" "Yes, that's it! James. James Taylor." I took a breath. "Yes, Dr. B., he did well. Well, indeed." Absolutely true story.
Just a personal note: It is impossible to convey how much James Taylor's music has meant to me in my lifetime. My love for it attracted my first girlfriend - later to become my wife - later the mother of my two sons. I was heartbroken over the breakup of James and Carly, but I understood that he was just too wild to be a husband in those days. I've followed his career for fifty years; his musical influence cannot be overstated.
My mom raised me on James Taylor's music. She had unfortunately never seen him in concert. Was so happy to make that happen for her the other night. A show with Taylor and Jackson Browne that neither of us will ever forget.
Just came back from that one. Was a very pretty show, and I can now say that I got to see James Taylor in person.
My wife and I saw James in 1976 at the Universal Amphitheater and about half way through the concert he said one of the things I love about this business is the friends you make and he had Carol King David Crosby and Graham Nash come out and do a couple of songs with him
Wow, both guys in concert? Holy moly!
@@marys3127 that’s what we said we didn’t know they were going to be there
I saw them too last month.
I've been lucky enough to see him in concert several times. No matter how old he gets..his voice never wavers. He sounds pure and brilliant each show. Its always a pleasure.
Same here. My favorite artist.
My first concert, and my best.
Ditto. I try to go to every concert since the 1970’s.
He just set a date near me. Hoping to catch him live
I wish I could see him one day
James Taylor is a national treasure - god bless him
As an Englishman I can assure you that he is a treasure to the whole world
@G Grey….as a Welshman, I totally agree with you! 👍
@@Arianrhod6She blew the interview by not asking about Carly.
I am 71 years old. I bought my first James Taylor album when I was 21 years old. I just Love the song “Walking Man” that was on my first James Taylor album. I wore that album out. My wife and I got to see him live many years ago when we lived in Manassas, VA. I cut the grass this morning, listening to James Taylor songs on my IPhone. I have been playing the Saxophone since I was 40 years old. In my quiet moments in my home in Alabama, I listen to James Taylor sing in my headphones and I play my saxophone along with him. When I do this, the World is alright with me. Recently I bought a guitar. My goal, is to be able to play “Sweet Music” like James Taylor. -Art Tysen.
I grew up listening to this guy's music. I'm now 64 and proud to call him...a hero of mine.
Thank you for all your love kindness and support
James Taylor one of the few singer/songwriters to sound as pure as he did when he began. Countless hours have been spent singing his songs and ones I have passed on to my young daughter. He lived through it all and we sure are glad. You rock James.
Can’t say the same for David Lee Roth and his voice lol
I had an alcoholic mom due to the loss of her first son to a car accident on the way home from his prom. She eventually overcame this horrible and tragic event and went on to live to 99! He has always had a place in my heart!
Thank you for your kindness love and support
I saw him in concert in 9/ 2009. At his 20 min intermission. His band members walked backstage. He walked to the edge of the stage. And spent every min with his fans. Then back to the microphone. What a music night!
He did the same (signing autographs) last Friday night in Boston---tremendous concert.
He is happily married now. I’m happy for him. He was my crush in the 80s.

AS a stage hand and camera op . I worked one of Mr Taylor show set up camera oping and tare down. A few years ago here in Atlanta.
He Stop the crew for a few Min before we enter the Area to tare down. and say thank you for all you help today, plus did a song for us. He is so humble. Mr Taylor See you next year 2021 and thank you so much for a good day with your tour crew. Not all act do that for the local hands . JB
I work backstage for performers and your right it is very rare that they acknowledge the people working in the back.... ~Alicia Keys was really nice backstage.... Taylor Swift and her family were really nice.... Most of the WWE guys are pretty amazing.....
He is truly a national treasure but mostly he's a remarkable songwriter. His poetry and imagery are brilliant and his songs can carry you away into other worlds. Amazing talent!
I saw James Taylor in concert one time, and it was truly remarkable. I am only a couple years younger than James, and I "grew up" with him. I love his music--it means so much to me. Good interview. Many more years, James.
Larry Ligget, I’m 68 years old now and remember him well. My heroin addiction started at age 15 and coincided with his until I got clean in 1987. I think James got clean around 1989 or 1990.
@@AbdulAllahAbuDaoud It appears he quit drugs in 1983
I saw James Taylor in 1978 ♥️♥️
He seems so nice and gentle. Drugs ruined his life for awhile and he had sadness with his parents splitting, but inspired his songs.
"You've Got a Friend" gave me chills! James Taylor, I was raised listening to you back in the 70's, and I want you to know that you have a very special place in my heart! Thank you!
@James Taylor Scammer!
Carole King wrote it
I remember being 16 years old and sitting in my girlfriends bedroom listening to a James Taylor album on her turn table. We would look at the James Taylor album cover and we would experience an altered state of reality.. didn’t need any drugs to take us there just James’ voice and his beautiful lyrics.. sweet memories!
Perfect Jane Pauley interview!
Always beautifully done, artful, respectful and sensitively honest. A real gem.
Two voices from that day, James Taylor and John Denver marked time for us.
Jane Pauly does such a great job on CBS Sunday Morning. Great interview, thank you!
@Marco Deieio Do you feel better now after saying something snotty and unwarranted? Just because you "can" say something, doesn't mean you "should."
😒
I've seen James live 8 times in the UK, and had the joy of talking to him personally, purely by chance, as he sat at a little cafe before a performance at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. The most gracious, talented, humble of human beings. If only everyone in the world were as kind and thoughtful as James Taylor, then the world would be a better place. A genius of music, and a true gentleman.
How is it possible that at the age of 72, James Taylor still sounds as good as he did at 20 years old????????
Auto tune and good backup singers.

No telling how many thousands of us learned the guitar, finger-picking style, so we could play his songs (for girls!). He was absolutely central to my life as a teenager (and beyond).
James still magical on this Sunday morning.

I owned every James Taylor album as it was released. Livingston's as well. I've never seen JT Live, but his music has been part of my life since he was signed by Apple..
Be Blessed James
Never owned his albums but saw him last night in St Louis…nothing short of an amazing concert.
Go see him. He is amazing!!
Still a powerful live performer, able to create magic on stage with just his voice and his timeless songs.
After all these years, his joy for music is unmistakably
james looks in terrific health, in fact
he doesn't look all that much different than he did 40 years ago.
Looks as if he eats healthily and keeps fit.
I bought many of his records when i got heavily into carole king.
2 fantastic phenomenon artists.
Deepest respect to these two greats.

I had James' Sweet Baby James poster hanging in my bedroom and wore out that album. Got to see him perform many times over the years, also got to see him when he was married to Carly Simon and she came out & sang Mockingbird with James. It was a great warm summer night outdoor concert and the crowd went WILD when they first heard her voice from behind the curtain with no introduction.
Thank you Mr. Taylor for sharing your musical gift with the world. Your work is timeless whether listened to in winter, spring, summer, or fall. 🌞
I'm so drawn to his music, it touches my soul. I've played his tunes on my guitar for 40 years and can copy his voice, almost. Met and talked at red rocks Colorado after a great concert, enjoyed a long chat, very insightful, articulate, anylictical guy. He has made it through so many struggles i belive God has watched over him, so we all can enjoy his music- to draw us all together in love and song. Thanks JT. ❤
Sweet Baby James reminds me of my first husband who loved his music so much. My first husband died with complications of Huntington's Disease when he was 50 . I've been sad for Carly. What a tragic life!
Why was her life tragic? She was born filth rich. Got everything she wanted.
What? Why sad? She lost him but otherwise - life of Riley... we should all be so unfortunate- lol

Been to about 4 or 5 concerts to see him and two of them were back to back days. How James sounded on the album was the same on stage. Best Concerts I ever been to,, Thank you James!!

Then add Jackson Browne into the mix,

Two musicians/groups were two of the greatest influences my life: the Beatles, and James Taylor. Period.
His music gives me chills upon chills and tears.
Amazingly put.
I grew up with JT. He got me through some rough times, as I laid on the carpet, stared out the window, and read the lyrics over and over till I knew every song by heart. Now in my 60s, I still listen intently, and I see him live every chance I get. It was a thrill to take my daughter to her 1st JT concert...she's a convert now. How could you not be?
Thanks James...❤

Wow his pain was turned into our joy during those times.
One of my all time favorite musicians
I did the same thing with my parents albums. Just laid on the carpet reading and looking at the pictures and dreaming I'm a singer. James Taylor is a legend and my idol lol. I'm wasted talent. A singer, a basketball player, a football player, a pool shark, and so many other things I was so good at but wasted it away. I'm 51 now and realize this now. Singing was always my passion and I still love it but if I'd of just listened to the millions of people who said I was good, great, incredible, and I shocked them all with how I could sound like any artist. I didn't believe them. Because I talked myself into why waste years on trying to be a famous singer when I'll probably just be let down. I took the safe road, the one I knew I could control. It wasn't the way to go because yes, I control it, but if I don't have the drive to do it everyday then I fall deeper down in society. I'm a painter/carpenter just starting my own business after learning the trades from so many and mostly learning what not to do. I literally have about 30 bucks to my name, I sleep in a room in my ex girlfriends mom's house, no car, no license, and I broke my front tooth so I look like an idiot, and all I own is a trash bag full of clothes. I have basically nothing at 51. Talk about wasted talent. What I do have is 4 loving daughters, my exes family's love, my own parents and 1 sisters love, and the mindset that I'm going to be a millionaire one day soon. I will be, wether it's because my business takes off or I hit the power ball, I will be. I believe in myself and I have faith in God and Jesus. I am wasted talent, but that doesn't mean I still can't be famous in my family, or my town, or my state even. In others eyes, I'm nothing, but in mine I have God and the drive to succeed. That's all I need. Thank u for listening.
❤my same age! I always love his music !!!
