James Taylor looks like this sweet lovable guy ,but no judgment here ,we all fight our demons ,she on the other hand is a force of nature ,very talented singer songwriter ! Peace dear Carly !
We really don't know what was going on in that marriage, so I don't think we should judge him. There may have been some infidelity going on which led him to start using drugs. I don't know if that was the cause of his drug usage or not, all I know it is a very complicated situation. James Taylor never talks about Carly Simon till this day, so there was something that drove them apart, and it was something strong enough to make him not want to revisit.
She's a lovely person. Loving is good, even when it doesn't work out. Think how sad it would be to have the gift of life, and not experience the happy & sad combination of love. The ability to feel intensely for something or someone other than yourself is one of the gifts of life. On your deathbed you can say with gratitude, "I've lived and I've loved and I've tried to help others." Being loved is a great gift. Giving love is huge.
Carly, love of my life when I was high school. And James too along with Carol king. You three helped me in those times, early to mid 70s with coming to terms with being gay in a small rural town. With you and James…time should heal all wounds and enjoy life. We are not here long. Oh, I still listen to the music and what a feel good thing it does for me. Lovely memories and I thank you.
Fwiw, my sister had a major spine operation in 1980. She shared the hospital room with Carly’s older sister, Joanna, an opera singer. Joanna was lovely, and when Carly & James visited her in the hospital (separately), they were lovely too. I met them all since I was in the same hospital for a much less serious surgery.
I’ve always loved Carly & James’ music. Fantastic talented musicians. “Anticipation” and “Fire and Rain” are my favorites. Soothsayers & artistic people can seem/be complicated. Bless them for enhancing our lives, I couldn’t live without music 💖
@trixiegirlism I agree with you, especially because James Taylor has moved on, remarrying and having twins with his current wife. I was surprised to hear that James does not visit the island where Carly and Ben live (I'm assuming Martha's Vineyard?), but chooses to leave that territory to his ex-wife and son. It is natural (and even heartwarming) to hear Carly say that she still loves James, the father of her children, Sally and Ben, but it seems much deeper than that when I heard her admission in this interview. I understand that she is still very close to Livingston Taylor, James' brother, and that the feeling is mutual. I had forgotten that Carly Simon had written her memoir in 2015, and I plan to listen to it on Audible. She also wrote a second memoir in 2019 about her friendship with Jackie Kennedy Onassis that sounds interesting and something I also plan to check out.
I have loved my husband since the day that we met 45 years ago. It is a love that is returned in even more than equal measure. I cannot imagine the pain that her unrequited love has brought her. I am deep fans of both artists. ❤️😔

Don’t ya love the word icon? You can ( and everyone does) use it in any way it suits you. Plug it in to any hole in a sentence or any pause in a diatribe . It just works. I’m onto the phrase “ through line “. I have no idea what it means but that’s the beauty of it . I can even replace icon with it. This message is brought to you by.”Save the English Language “ If YOU don’t, It will be left to the Europeans and you don’t want that do you?
@@StevenC32 According to the Woke Folk, now, we are ALL icons. This was, at one time, a very special word reserved for very special people or things. But, in the process of killing or “dumbing down” the English language, people have adopted it and dragged it through the mud of mediocrity until it has little or no meaning at all. Good job! I hope you’re proud.
After reading Carly’s book Boys in the Trees, I don’t think James ever really loved her. But whenever I hear him interviewed about her now, he refers to her respectfully as “the mother of my children.”
Oooew! Not much of a compliment, very much displaying a real disconnection! Sh**! I sure as hell would want to run far away from a guy like that! Poor Carly!
That's not respectful. That's full of connotation as if he's making a point that it's the only reason she's still in his life, or that it's the only means of identity he applies to her, that she's not a person deserving of mention by name. I watched a different interview she gave in her home in the Hamptons and she gave more detail about her current day relationship with Taylor. Although she was trying to be diplomatic, the picture she painted of him was a man-child who was deeply jealous of her success and still held a personal grudge for her having left him. I think his man-child behavior has been something she has had to manage delicately for many years for the sake of her children. She really impressed me. In this context, you will understand why I consider his constant reference to her only as "the mother of my children" would certainly not be seen as "respectful". ❤
@@helenaville5939 Makes you think of the movie A Star Is Born. A woman finding success while in a relationship threatens the very foundation of that relationship. Makes no sense. Success is also, a passion as well as love. Success makes a relationship succeed.
I've always liked her music but something I experienced involving her really sold me even more on this woman. Back in 94-95 I was working in Cincinnati, Ohio and was standing at the corner of a parking lot and street in an area called Mt. Adams. I'm standing there talking to another guy I worked with and I see a woman walking down the street(in the street) from a distance. Not really paying her much attention. She finally made it down to where we were talking and we both had to do a double-take. It was Carly Simon walking with a camera on a sling around her neck. Obviously just sight seeing the Mt Adams area. I think she may have been in town on tour. We were stunned and even more stunned because it was just her. No entourage, no bodyguards. Nothing, just her walking down the street. My coworker and I didn't have the nerve to say anything and frankly I don't like hounding people for autographs. That's cringey to me. In any case, she must be a very down to Earth lady.
I knew of Carly Simon but it wasn't until 1987 I believe it was, when her "Greatest Hits Live" album came out that I fell in love with her music. When I saw the video and heard the song "All I Want is You" I was hooked!!
I was just thinking about her other day cause i heard her song n thought of our wonder life with our 4 kids, we slways had a boat n would go vacation out east on long Island. I would bring along her tapes n my sister n i ( she n family also had boat) would drink wine n dance on dock . My sister n husband are gone as well as Her son n my son. Very moving interview. Since that was a while ago, I would be very curious to know if they have spoken since. Their "Mockinbird" on stage was so incredible....Love is beautiful ❤
Carly is among the most talented singer songwriters of her generation. I adore the emotional honesty and power of her songs. I've never cared for her ex, as I've always felt that coldness in him. Others may think he's an icon, and that's their right. She's underrated in my opinion. Love you, Carly 💖
Carly Simon......one CLASS ACT..... refined.....intelligent....adoreable....always was always will be. He didn't deserve you. And you deserve better Carly❤
@stacer1962 I agree 💯! When relationships end alot of the time a person talks about their dreaded ex and all the ways their ex failed as a partner - this always makes me give a side-eye because no one person is entirely to blame just as no one person is totally free of responsibility for the breakdown of a relationship (excluding any kind of one sided abuse and/or violence etc of course).
Carly was such a beautiful girl. The Hollywood pressures of success, eternal youth and appearances. You didn't need medical 'enhancement' darlin. God bless you Carly.
I don't think you ever will, because James Taylor isn't the type to revisit the past or talk about his feelings. He never talks to or about Carly Simon. He prefers to leave that chapter of his life in the past.
I love Carly Simon - she’s definitely a voice of my generation! I regret never seeing her in concert , however she never toured very often. I do have a dvd of her perfect performance on Martha’s Vineyard back in mid 80’s. It’s excellent from the filming during the magic hour to her singing.
I don't think a deepening of emotional intimacy is too much to expect of the person you have pledged to love, honor and cherish for the rest of your days. It is pretty much a given in any healthy marriage . Healthy people do not use drugs and alcohol to numb themselves. He made a commitment to her when they married, and had children then abandoned her and their 2 children by using drugs and alcohol. His priority was his addiction. Her priority was her family. Addicts make terrible parents. ( I know from personal experience) He is a talented singer, songwriter and performer, but was a terrible husband and father.
Carly Simon was one of my idols as a kid--No Secrets was the first album I sang to and still do. She's still beautiful and as ageless and timeless as her music! ♥️♥️🎶
Yes well you need to find the right partner for to form a relationship with for genuine love to be established and flourish, not by seeing a photo of someone you've never met, getting jealous because they are holding someone's hand, then deciding your going to marry them and that's all going to be the basis for a successful loving relationship...
@@brt5273 I remember Jamie Lee Curtis saying in many interviews that she saw Chistopher Guest's picture in a promotional ad for "This is Spinal Tap" in Rolling Stone magazine and told a friend, "Oh, I'm going to marry that guy". Nearly 40 years of marriage and two children later...the couple are still happily married. It seems an unorthodox way to meet your future husband, but I really love that story! On April 8, 1996, her husband inherited the title Baron Haden-Guest when his father died. As the wife of a hereditary peer, Curtis is a baroness with the style of The Lady Haden-Guest. Curtis does not use this title, saying, "it has nothing to do with me". I found that so interesting, and it made me think of Harry's wife who keeps a death-grip on her Duchess of Sussex title and who is often mocked for it.
I think James never felt the same about as she did him. Artists’ emotions can be very extreme. He’s very cold about it and she’s still carrying a torch.
Having watched a number of her other interviews, I would say the opposite is true. Just because he was emotionally unavailable in their marriage doesn't mean he did not have strong feelings for her. They were just oppressed feelings. She moved on, he remained a man-child who carried a grudge over the years that she had to carefully manage for the sake of their children. He never moved on despite subsequent relationships.
@FoodLover-zw7pj Hilariously you accuse others of thinking they have it all worked out and then proceed to claim you have it all worked out. The truth is no-one knows. But at least spare us the pontificating.
@@JudithJohnson Yes, no doubt you're correct. Carrying any unresolved burden through life diminishes a person's availability on an emotional level. Tragic really.
Great interview. It does come across to me that Carly is still not over James today its quite sad really seems like she still holds something for him. Bless you Carly 🙏
I think we can continue loving a person who we have had an intimate relationship, after they have passed out of our life. Our heart remembers. Perhaps we see the beauty and love beneath the veneer of anger, and self protection. The parts that need healing.
I grew up listening to both of their music, and it is sad that they could not make their marriage work. I know it is a very complicated situation that led to their divorce. James Taylor is clean now, but he still doesn't want to have anything to do with Carly Simon, so there may be something more going on that isn't being talked about.
No-one on the outside knows what exactly goes on between 2 people in a relationship. I like Carly Simon but JT has always come across to me as a very decent guy too so I don't believe it's quite as simple as "he won' talk to me, he doesn't visit the children" etc etc. He doesn't seem to want to publicly talk about it so I think people should respect that - just cause you're a famous artist doesn't give everyone a right to know every detail of your private life! ✌
@@firsargentum5920 I am under the impression that James Taylor has a decent relationship with his children. Most people commenting on this video tend to believe he really didn't return her love; if that were true, would he avoid her like she claims he does?
@@williammaddox3339 I think you're right - his son Ben has played on stage with him. I don't fully buy Carly Simon's version of events - she said in another interview that he won't give her his phone no. ...🤔
If she doesn't have closer after 40 years, then she probably will never get it. James Taylor doesn't want to have anything to do with her. So there is 2 sides to the story, and we will never hear James Taylor's side of it.
I swear I believed I met James Taylor multiple times at The YMCA in New Orleans in the 80s. I was a young teenager then and the guy I met looked like James Taylor, full of hair and a mustache, exactly. I remember him introducing himself as James, so I always called him Mr. James but never told us his last name. I remember him telling me he’s spending his summer in NO to visit his daughter since he was divorced and he has his daughter every other weekend. All I can remember was he was very nice and his daughter was about 5-7 years of age at the time and he was a great lap swimmer. Years went by I never think about it until every time a topic about JTaylor comes up, I keep looking at those old photos of him and I swear, it is the same guy that I remembered during the summer. In fact I feel confident it was him.
Your problem is already taken care of. Your not with him anymore. You can only take care of yourself Carley. Leave the coldness of James behind. Good luck in your life. Glad you got stronger with yourself ❤
She still loves him. She will always love him. That’s why she’s still talking about it. Nothing is taken care of. He doesn’t even acknowledge her. It will always be painful for her.
She wanted to hang out on Martha's Vineyard with her daddy's friends. He wanted to hang out on Montserrat with Jimmy Buffett. The divorce was a win-win.
I've always loved her songs-a voice like no other. Clouds in my coffee and the spy who loved me. Seems like a wonderful person. Would love to have met her.
Is this really from a month ago?? Even if it were a year, I cannot believe how great Carly Simon looks! If I didn’t know better, I would have guessed she was in her late 50’s. She is just as beautiful as ever.
It is interesting how artists and express their heart and soul through their art and music, and struggle opening to love in their intimate relationships. I understand this.
It's wise to stay away from those who use any type of substance. They are hurting themselves, so if they can hurt themselves, they also can hurt you. Any type of abuse to themselves or to others should not be tolerated.
There is " Always a Solution". Love & Forgiveness. Sometimes it may have to be done silent, at distance. Sometimes in person, if it can be done from heart, open, vulnerable, honest, peaceful. There is Love, there always will be. Forgives clears all karma that needs to be, creating freedom, closure, gratitude. Much Love to all. We love you all. 💜🫶💜✨️🙏🏼😇☮️
That might work for you, but that doesn't necessarily work for everyone. We are imperfect creatures, and everyone deals with things differently. Some people prefer to leave the past behind them and only concern themselves with the present, and not look back.
I am sure drugs and alcohol had a big reason for their breakup. Also many many first marriages never last. Immaturity and impatience play a big role. Then we get married the second time and somehow it works. Love and Learning are powerful forces… 💕💕

I truly loved this interview with Carly Simon- so insightful and honest. I have been listening to Carly and JT since childhood. I saw her in Beverly Hills about 6 yrs ago. Thank you Mr. Rather.
Carly is a wonderful talent and she is much loved by the people here on Martha's Vineyard..she is generous with her time lending her talents to various fund raisers here on the Vineyard..we love her being a fellow islander
I love Dan Rather. He’s a great interviewer and lets the person talk without interrupting.
Agreed! Very professional!!!
The best!
As likeable as Oprah is, she’s terrible for interrupting and monopolizing an interview 😳😡

James Taylor looks like this sweet lovable guy ,but no judgment here ,we all fight our demons ,she on the other hand is a force of nature ,very talented singer songwriter ! Peace dear Carly !
James was a heroin addict, so…
We really don't know what was going on in that marriage, so I don't think we should judge him.
She expresses herself so deeply!
I love Carly Simon so much!! She's such a beautiful soul. 💖
I’m 69 and her voice is just as incredible as the person she always seemed to be! 💗💗💗
Sounds gravelly but she's 81
I have always loved Carly Simon. She's an amazing lady, and she's as beautiful inside as she is on the outside.
Love Carly! I grew up with her beautiful music. She had the most exotic looks! Absolutely beautiful!
“Exotic”😂🤣😂🤣…I guess that’s one way to describe deceptively INVERTED zoo characters…
That bushy hair😂
Have always been a couple of my all time favorites. Sad that she still hasn't moved on emotionally from that relationship after all these years.
@@lisalivingston6473 Thank you for reminding me about her books. I'll be adding them to my reading list.

Her speaking voice is amazing!
James is so vain, he probably thinks this interview is about him.
See I heard she sang that song about warren beaty
@@johnmurphy2113 You are correct (I think). I was just making an attempt at humor.
That song was never about him, and that's a terribly shitty thing to say. It doesn't describe him at all.

Carly is an icon. There are very few in her league.

@@Msfifisquarepantz - chill.
James Taylor is an icon too.
The song is Hard Times! The lyric: holding it together ain't always easy.....angry man, hungry woman....
Wow.
Poor Carly!
@@susanhopkinswarneke2335 isn’t that special.
@@helenaville5939 correct
@@helenaville5939 Makes you think of the movie A Star Is Born.
A woman finding success while in a relationship threatens the
very foundation of that relationship. Makes no sense. Success
is also, a passion as well as love. Success makes a relationship
succeed.
I'm glad she had the guts to say she still loved him.
What
Wonderful memories, im tearing up but the best time ever.
Carly Simon deserved better!💙💜
She can still sing amazingly. What a talent. Thank for your sharing this.

Carly simon....one class act
Carly was such a beautiful girl. The Hollywood pressures of success, eternal youth and appearances. You didn't need medical 'enhancement' darlin.
God bless you Carly.
Love the hear his side of the story
I don't think you ever will, because James Taylor isn't the type to revisit the past or talk about his feelings. He never talks to or about Carly Simon. He prefers to leave that chapter of his life in the past.
Sometimes men just won’t let you love them……..it really pisses me off, but I have to let that go because I’m learning to love myself first.
You have my sympathy Ms Simon, as do all women who suffer because of their partner's selfishness.
i suppose you are free of sin
All women are free of sin. Ask one
Addiction is a disease. Not selfish.
No one ever really knows what goes on within a marriage than the ones married to each other. Everything is not black or white.
Carly comes across as a very genuine person.
She comes across as a spoiled rich kid.
I saw James in concert recently. He was laid back and really funny. I like Carly, but I can see how her different priorities wore him out.
She was always so much more, beautiful, stunning, her voice so wonderful, she was always the fantastic one.
Two extremely talented people 👏.

Carly Simon was one of my idols as a kid--No Secrets was the first album I sang to and still do. She's still beautiful and as ageless and timeless as her music! ♥️♥️🎶

shocking and sad i can totally understand wanting to be loved and wanted my motto is to love yourself you are enough pray to god dont give up
Yes well you need to find the right partner for to form a relationship with for genuine love to be established and flourish, not by seeing a photo of someone you've never met, getting jealous because they are holding someone's hand, then deciding your going to marry them and that's all going to be the basis for a successful loving relationship...

After that many years I am over them all and now happily married and living in the present. So should she as well!
I grew up listening to both of their music, and it is sad that they could not make their marriage work. I know it is a very complicated situation that led to their divorce. James Taylor is clean now, but he still doesn't want to have anything to do with Carly Simon, so there may be something more going on that isn't being talked about.
I pray that Carly gets closure with this enigmatic, complicated man, in my heart, I believe sh more than deserves it. We all need more peace. ❤
Carly needs to get closure with herself regarding that man.

This interview answers questions I've had for decades.
Incredibly honest and wise woman!
Dan rather looks timeless and fantastic!
No, he doesn't 😂
What a powerful and insightful conversation! Sounds like "Her Town, Too" was a bit more autobiographical than JT might have let on.
This lady is a very elegant person. Always loved her music.
My first book of guitar music was Carly’s Anticipation album. I love the D chords on Anticipation. I’ve been playing those chords since 1972!
Dee, why your spree?
"You're" not with him anymore."
Not sure why this is necessary. Just leave the past in the past. Nothing revealed here that enlightens or informs.
She wanted to hang out on Martha's Vineyard with her daddy's friends. He wanted to hang out on Montserrat with Jimmy Buffett. The divorce was a win-win.
A wonderful love story, ruined by addictions. Yet, their love lingers on ✨✨✨ through their music, their children and their artistic commitment ✨✨✨
Hers not his....
If a man as young as Taylor was married 3 times, why in the heck even think about marriage?
I was in love with James too, when I was 10 years old. I loved the 2 of them together. Saw them at the No Nukes concert.
I've always loved her songs-a voice like no other. Clouds in my coffee and the spy who loved me. Seems like a wonderful person. Would love to have met her.
