    In this video, I'll show you how to use OpenTX on your Taranis to put a throttle limit on the side-slider potentiometer. This lets you scale the throttle of your quadcopter up and down in real time as you need it. I'll also show you how to lock that function to a switch so that you don't accidentally limit your throttle when you don't want to.

    Thanks for the video!
    I think I found better settings. Allowing the power to go all the way to 0 seemed risky - if you accidentally dial all the way down mid-flight, you will crash.
    So I came up with these values:
    *= Weight 25, Offset 75
    += Weight 25, Offset -25
    This makes minimum on the dial cap you out at 50% power, with the detent being 75%

    Thanks Josh, when I flew helis. I did a throttle hold at 100% or 75%. This allowed me to do flips, tick tocks and barrel rolls while not having to worry about throttle control. But at that time I did everything on a Spectrum controller. Now I am moving over to the jumper t12 plus with opentx. And your explanation helps out. Never having felt with opentx before.

    First of all: thank you for your work! Your channel is always very helpful and gives a lot of interesting ideas, on how to set up a quad and everything around the topic.
    Concerning your throttle-modification:
    There is actually a simple Formula for all offsets and weights, if you want a custom throttle threshold at the lower end of the slider.
    For example the throttle will go from 20% to full,
    or from 40% to full
    (as long as the throttle stick is at max)
    (100% - ) / 2 = Weight1
    1 - Weight1 = Offset1
    Weight2 = Weight1
    Offset2 = - Weight2
    Weight1 and Offset1 are for the multiplying mixer (which must always be first) and Weight2 and Offset2 are for the adding mixer (which is always second)
    Following are some examples:
    Max throttle range: 0% - 100%
    CHx: IThr Weight(100%)
    *= S1 Weight(50%) and Offset(50%)
    += S1 Weight(50%) and Offset(-50%)
    Max throttle range: 20% - 100%
    CHx: IThr Weight(100%)
    *= S1 Weight(40%) and Offset(60%)
    += S1 Weight(40%) and Offset(-40%)
    Max throttle range: 40% - 100%
    CHx: IThr Weight(100%)
    *= S1 Weight(30%) and Offset(70%)
    += S1 Weight(30%) and Offset(-30%)
    Max throttle range: 60% - 100%
    CHx: IThr Weight(100%)
    *= S1 Weight(20%) and Offset(80%)
    += S1 Weight(20%) and Offset(-20%)

      @@CoppertopFPV - I don't recall Nick covering this on the Mobula but I don't doubt you, he probably did. Also, JB has done a video promoting Project Mockingbird previously so where's the issue? I don't consider what CurryKitten or JB doing as "parroting" and *see no problem in them showing slightly different or even similar solutions and opinions, there isn't any ownership to an idea on how to fix a problem,* he was merely acknowledging a fellow content creator's solution as being correct and that he made an error. Besides, we can easily agree that not everyone subscribes to both of these guys so what the problem? We all win here. Everybody and his mother covered the various releases of the Mobula7 so are they all "parroting" the first guy to do a review? I think not. Besides, knowledge is worthless without being shared. We all share the same love for the hobby, right? Relax, take a chill and go fly. Peace.

    I don't care if your method is "stupidly complicated". It's worth making the effort to understand.
    Kudos for showing us how you thought through the problem, rather than just presenting a solution. Seeing this steers folk toward a method which can be applied to a whole range of similar solutions, rather than just fixing this one issue.
    And it was uplifting to see the joy of solving it. A stark contrast to yesterday's outro, which had all the hallmarks of man spending too much time alone :-)

    Hi Joshua/All,
    I am in the situation of trying to calm down the Emax Tinyhawk II Freestyle to be able to fly in the backyard, so I Googled how to set a throttle limit, and I found Oscar's page, which references your videos, and you reference other videos.
    I decided to follow your Global Variable scenario that sets 0 to 100% tuning on the throttle, but I added another step that I think will help with the tuning of this useful feature. (because 0 to 100% max throttle tuning is probably overkill!!)
    I took your two slider-based input channels, and added a CURVE to them. I set CV1 to to be a 2-point curve to "bound" the OUTPUT of the slider (that goes INTO your two gain and offset channels). For example, if the CV1 is tuned to -50% to 50%, then the same 0-100% math from above will be tuning the max throttle from 25% to 75%.
    That's still a big range, but it is EASY to go bump around the endpoints of the 2-point curve.
    I tuned to the range to 30-50% throttle (a bit lower than "1S"), and found during the first few seconds of flying that 30% was too low, but moving to the middle detent on the slider set it to 40%, and that was controllable. I'll fly for a while at the middle detent, then bump it to the top when I feel better at being able to keep it inside the yard! And, it is easy to bump the CV1 up at bit as I get more comfortable. (20% up on both endpoints moves the range up by 10%, etc...)
    NOTE: The "hovering point" will be notably higher with this throttle limit, and notably larger throttle stick motions will be required than with the standard linear throttle out of the transmitter.
    I hope that this helps some people!
    And, I want to express my sincere gratitude for all of the work that you/Joshua does on all of these videos.
    Sean

    Thanks for sharing, love this slider mod with switch enabled. That said, I was looking at this when considering to do 6S on 2200kV motor and I believe I read that if you do this within the TX rather than within BF using throttle limit “scale” setting, if things go AWOL, the FC can still hit max throttle so it was suggested not to make it work through the TX but rather setup BF to avoid it hitting max throttle ... is this true? Any benefit of one over the other?

  • @rfournerat
    @rfournerat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    When adding this or similar features, do we incur latency by employing this type of approach? If so, is the additional latency significant? Or taking a tangent, could we minimize command processing latency by removing any features similar to this (yes, reducing functionality), in addition to bypassing the input section and having the mixer take input directly from the sticks and switches? Inserting a little into what you said, it seems that OpenTX has a lot of features that quad pilots many not need. Could a streamlined and minimized quad specific configuration reduce command processing latency from the default settings?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Processing latency is almost completely negligible. The main latency comes from the command link between the transmitter and the FC, from the filtering (inherent to filtering), and from the ability of the motors to change speed due to their own mass.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely you can do that! The first mixer line, the multiply line, basically is turning the -100 to + 100 output of a normal channel into a multiplier of 0 to 100%. So you would want to change that to a 50 to 100 instead of 0 to 100. I think in order to do that you would use weight 25 and offset 75% but I haven't tested it. Then you would need to conversely modify the second line.

    • @hoskoau
      @hoskoau 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      thats the way I have mine working, I made two mixes, one with weight 25 and offset 75, the other with weight 25 and offset -25. The first mix goes from 50 to 100 which will be used as throttle weight and the second from -50 to 0 used for throttle offset. I feed these to global variables which are entered into a second throttle mix, set to replace and on a switch.

    You don't need two lines adding to the mixer, you can apply a curve to the first line to control the offset and weight across the -100 -> 100 x range

      Stepping down the battery will tame the quad, yes. The rates will still be close to the same but the motors won't spin up as fast so the rates will be effectively reduced a little. Mostly the throttle will slow down though.

    Here is an overview of what the three mixer lines should be:
    CHx:IThr Weight(100%)
    *= S1 Weight(50%) Offset 50%
    += S1 Weight(50%) Offset -50%
    However, turning my left slider has only influence half the way turning it - on the middle position I have then already 100% throttle, turning the slider further to the upper position has not any further influence. Have I overseen anything? Best regards from Germany, I have booked your great channel!!!

    On my xlite I could not get that first technique to work. When slider was at one extreme the throttle happened normally. When the slider is at the opposite end it goes from 50% to 0% - In\verted throttle. So for now I have a logical switch triggered by the slider. Added a replacement throttle in the mixer that is triggered by the logical switch. That will set the throttle to 75 weight and -25 offest.

      SirPoonga as I could not get in to work directly on S1 on X-Lite, I made follow changes. On inputs I created a new input on S1 with weight of -50 and offset of 50. Then on mixers tab I used this input instead of the direct S1 input with the other settings the same as listed above.
      This makes the slider all the way to left limit throttle to 50% and when all the way to right 100%.

      Matt: Simply add a line to the throttle channel in the mixer and select s1 as the source, then you can turn the knob below 50% for a throttle limit & turn it above 50% for an "idle-up or airmode" effect. It was that easy for me.

    There is a step missing from this video when I followed it exactly my slider also affected my throttle low such that it would not go to -100%. To fix this I added on the first line a weight of +50% and offset of +100%, this does 2 things. 1. it only limits the high throttle limit but allows you to go to -100 for low throttle 2. you could use 100 wieght and 50% offset as well to fix the low end problem but it makes the pot too sensitive to adjust and if you bump it a bit too much your throttle inverts so the setting of weight 50 offset 100 desensitizes the pot. Warning if you ajust your pot over the 50% mark your throttle will only increase up to 50% and if then it will start to go negative again, net result is you wont be able to take off at all and if you bump it in flight your going down. This is a cool thing that taranis can do but I think it is safer to just add a line on the throttle mixer, set the weight and offset and expo to what ever you want your limits you like then tie it to a switch. I like to use self leveling mode on my tiny whoops when flying indoors but then switch to acro for outdoor freestyle on my 2s betafpv whoop so I will set the limit to only activate when I am in self level mode

    The tiny whoops have interested me the most since I can fly them around my house on rainy days. Yes, it does actually rain in California too 😳 When I can’t drive to my hangar, strap in my parachute l, and go fly the aerobatic airplane I spent many years building. I program, ness with tuning, and fly tiny whoops around my house. I was thinking it would be awesome to be able to set one of my dial potentiometer switches on my QX7 to set my throttle percentage since these new 1S/2S tiny whoops are a handful for my beginner fingers. I was also wondering if someone tech savvy could possibly create Amber sound files that sound the percentage your dialed to say every 10% percent. Maybe bottom of the dual is 50% then Amber would sound out at each 10% increments. Is this something you could help me out on? Luv2flypilot ✈️

      The way to do this is create a logical switch that is true when thd slider is at a certain value. Then create a Special Function that plays the sound file when the Logical Switch is true. Search my channel for "read out voltage" for more information.

    Hello Joshua, I am trying to do this function on an X9 Lite using the single pot (S1). However, the pot seems to have a very short range where in registers a change in the throttle. On my pot, only about 25% of the switch range is being used. Is there a way to change this? I was able to get the throttle limiting to work, its just that there is a very small range in the pot where there is actually a response.

    Someone has certainly already written this in the comments:

    The confusion comes from: 8:51 where the weight was first 100 and after a jumpcut it changed to 50 😁 (As seen here: 10:11)

    as when it would be set manually in the *input* panel: (As seen in the first video from Joshua)
    and you are able to *use the dial to change the throttle limit.*

    _______________
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________
    *Explanation for the settings*
    Requirement:
    1)Throttle: From -100 to "Whatever max throttle value I want: Between -100 and 100.”
    2) If the throttle stick is moved to the lowest position, it always has to be -100 (otherwise the quad might no arm)
    Please see for a visual demonstration:
    www.geogebra.org/graphing/szmvbtpf
    y=mx+b (linear function aka straight line)
    x → Input Throttle value
    y → New throttle value
    (m → How “steep” the slope is)
    (b → where does the line cross the y-axis)
    Dial: 0% to a 100% --> DialValue: 0 - 1
    General formula: y=DialValue*x + (-(1 - DialValue)* 100)
    Example Dial is at 80% (DialValue = 0.8)
    y=0.8*x + (-(1-0.8)*100)
    y=0.8*x + (-0.2*100)
    y=0.8*x + (-20)
    y=0.8*x - 20
    Input max throttle value = x = 100
    y=0.8*100 - 20
    y=80 - 20
    y= 60
    Now the max throttle value is 60
    Input min throttle value = x = -100
    y= 0.8*(-100) - 20
    y= - 80 - 20
    y= -100
    Now the min throttle is still at -100
    Throttle: -100 to 60, this fulfills the requirements
    Other percentages with their range
    60%: -100 to 20
    50%: -100 to 0
    30%: -100 to -40
    _______________
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________
    How that this relates to the settings
    *y=DialValue*x + (-(1 - DialValue)** *100)*
    Dial has to go from 0% to 100% (a dial goes normally from -100 to 100)
    *DialValue*x*
    *=50 S1 →
    Source: S1
    Weight: 50
    Offset: 50
    (Optional: Switch: SC-)
    Multiplex: Multiply
    Starting point → -100 to 100
    When we add weight: 50 → -50 to 50
    When we add an offset of 50 → 0 to 100
    Our Dial now goes from 0% up to a 100% (DailValue: 0 - 1)
    *+ (-(1 - DialValue)** *100)*
    +=50 S1 →
    Source: S1
    Weight: 50
    Offset: -50
    (Optional: Switch: SC-)
    Multiplex: Add
    Math something something:
    Starting point → -100 to 100
    When we add weight: 50 → -50 to 50
    When we add an offset of - 50 → -100 to 0
    The value goes from -100 to 0
    (For some reason the values here are treated a “whole” numbers and not as “percentage”
    It adds 50 (and not as we would expect from the multiply function 0.5). That is why we have the "* 100" in the general formula)
    How far down the function has to move so that it goes through the Point (-100,-100)
