It's nice to hear more about how Hoseryx brought everyone together. And I'm with you, it was a genuinely unique and amazing experience that I hope the BIONICLE community never forgets.
Personally I think that hoseryx's design fits really well for the character, and will always be my head Canon. Not only the disturbingly frail part but also what it would represent as the first toa. She was a prototype so she might have looked a lot different than later designs, perhaps only being a proof of concept for the great beings. It's also quite reminiscent of retro robots with their bendy arms which are often seen as primitive design wise. And my last reason is because of how it fits with the mata/2001 characters. In similar form to them it has no complex articulation, and most importantly was made out of a few, primitive technic pieces. This aspect especially in my opinion brings the design back to Bionicle's roots as the small, simple technic line it used to be, and I can't think of a design philosophy more fitting for the first toa.
If I had control of the contest I would have given Hoseryx a separate place in Bionicle canon as a nod to the impact made, perhaps just a mascot for the forum or something?
Bro, SUPER well made video!😂🙏 The Bionicle Community can be strange at times but ultimately it’s the community that I’ve found myself the closest with over the years. Keep up the great work✌️
As someone who was on the TTV Message boards back in the old golden pre-post-G2 days, I can say the people in charge, the TTV cast, very much so liked control. The moderation was heavy, requests were often denied against community wishes, and other altercations that came to mind. I stopped posting and writing around the time of the canonization contests, though I was never a fan of how much Greg retconned and added after the ending, something I believe I told him in a conversation on the boards, but I can very much see them unhappy with a "joke" entry winning and not something that fit more to their tastes of what Bionicle should be and look like. At the end of the day I still love the canon model and would actually like to try and build it myself. It would have gotten my vote had I cared at the time.
Oh hey I actually know one of the people shown when bringing up the “toxicity“ part. Sweet guy, but boy was he vocally unhappy about the contest. Pretty well done video, though I think you glanced over exactly *why* people might have used Hoseryx as a means of protest, and 4chan's involvement. The truth about Bionicle's fandom is that, honestly, it is one of the most splintered communities I've ever known of, moreso than even the likes of something like Sonic. Bionicle fans are everywhere, but due to the franchise being currently in a state of limbo (or let's just be honest and say "dead"), there is no central group or site for Bionicle fans. They're on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, 4chan's /toy/ board, and wherever else you might think of. In comes TTV: a group of fans who decide that the Bionicle fandom deserves to have a central hub and some notable figureheads. They created their own forum and youtube channel, and they received a following of their own, but they hadn't engulfed the larger fanbase (and still haven't). They were just yet another fractured place for fans to be. Come these canon contests, with the news that it would be hosted exclusively on TTV's boards however, and this is where we start to see a bit of vitriol; the fanbase was still greatly fractured, and several people (most notably 4chan's Bionicle general) were upset with TTV basically trying to "force" themselves into this central position. "These are just some nobodies, why do they get to represent the fanbase as a whole? Why do I have to make an account on their website just to participate in this contest that, realistically, everybody would care about?" And so you had a bunch of people with that same sentiment rallying behind Hoseryx because, along with the other reasons shown in the video (some thought it matched the description+aesthetic better than anyone else's, was funny, etc), they wanted to make themselves known, that TTV doesn't represent the fanbase, which is far larger than just them. Even the cross-board shilling of the contest wasn't just done because "hey guys protest these guys cuz i said so" (though yeah that played a large part), but because some users wanted to make other fans aware of the contest - maybe former fans who hadn't kept up with the series since they were kids but still fond of it, or merely forgot about it and got caught up with other hobbies. They were trying to unite the fanbase properly, which in a certain way, I think is kinda admirable, behind all the shitposts and flamewars.
Honestly, you're right about that. There definitely WERE people coming from 4chan just for the memes, but that doesn't include the people on 4chan that felt slighted, like you explained. This is a really good take, and I wish I'd had the forethought to include something like this in the video itself. I don't think the TTV had any malicious or even greedy intentions with doing the polls the way they did (in fact, my understanding is that it was an attempt to UNIFY the different sides of the fandom), but you're absolutely correct that doing so made it hard for some parts of the community to get engaged. I guess we'll see if things get better with time, but until then, I appreciate your thoughts here! They definitely do a better job explaining the protests than I did!
This is kinda interesting in a way. It's almost like the Bionicle fandom is the Roman Empire and after the fall of the Roman Empire, there were a bunch of fractured, splintered kingdoms scattered throughout medieval Europe, with some of the larger and more prominent ones trying to present themselves as a revived Rome, such as the Holy Roman Empire.
I'm a bit estranged with the community myself so I can kinda see where the /toy/ crowd is coming from. I'm personally hella relieved we got a serious take on Helryx take the canon but given everything you said I can see where at least a chunk of the Hoseryx squad comes from. I don't think TTV was in the wrong for sparking canon back into Bionicle but I understand the sentiment that they can have too much power over the franchise and the fanbase
There’s a dimension that just sits in the corner of the Bionicle universe where Lego brick Tahoe and hoseorRick’s exist with the other weird Bionicle characters and remix and abominations
Honestly, I legitimately like some of the upgraded versions of Hoseryx. The original design is just a bit _too_ memey to really be a serious canon design, but some of the ones with multiple hoses for arms and an actual torso component make a lot of sense based on the description.
It's a very good middle ground if you ask me, she's just clunky enough to match the description but not enough to look stupid. Add the canon mask and she actually looks like she could be a real set, unlike, say, Arthaka who looks cool yeah but is *incredibly* MOC-ey to me
Can someone tell me good bionicle circles? I really liked Gen 2 but i'm not a huge fan of gen 1, and I want to talk to someone about it. I want to know more about generation 1 while making my case for Generation 2.
Oh sweet, names of people I know! Also it's worth noting the vote brigade was almost all /b/; /biog/ spammed multiple accounts and was surprisingly more low-key despite their hatred for the "establishment" of TTV. The tone in both threads was very different, ironically with /b/ being more chill and "oh cool bionicle, looks funny lol," and /biog/ being very much about "sticking it to the man" and being angsty contrarians. I don't know numbers but I would suspect /b/ did its work early on and then /biog/ started flooding later on.
Yeah I'm 100% on team underscore for this one, I'm not balls deep enough in the community to keep up with all the latest memes so if that made it in it would just be a dumb in joke I wasn't around for. A dumb in joke I find funny in hindsight, granted, but for an actual canon entry nah. Final design is exactly how I imagined it in my head, has a really interesting silhouette and fits very well with Gen 1's early aesthetic if you ask me. Also I can't really consider the examples of "toxic" comments to be really all that bad, just seems like extremely mild internet banter to me. Maybe they're some big infamous names I'm not aware of but they seem to have very valid opinions given what was going on at the time.
Even though the now canon model looks great, I don't like it. It's a good design but as Helryx? I don't think so. Like, I get it, she's supposed to be "disturbingly frail" and was the first Toa so obviously the Great Beings hadn't perfected the design but like, look at this 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' lookin' as goblin. I think it's mostly just the hunchback but still, I don't like how thin she. I get that it's abiding by the canon description but I think a 'warrior grandma' (Yes, that is how I'd describe her) would be more in line.
It's not so much that the Bionicle community can't be trusted, in my opinion, so much as it is that people are stupid and will sometimes flock to something just because they think it's funny. It's honestly not that surprising, either, given how widespread the internet is in peoples' day-to-day lives right now and the popularity of memes being posted everywhere online
as much as i like hoseryx, i really hoped it wouldnt win. its a great meme but not a good design to take seriously as canon, and the winning MOC is way better IMO
I feel that was the whole point of Hoseryx; and while I can't say for sure, I think that the person who created her probably didn't think she'd actually come that close to winning. It was obviously meant as a joke, but I have seen a few times that when people are given the option to do so, they will vote in favor of something that they think is funny as opposed to taking the the contest seriously, and I feel it was blown even more out of proportion with the age of the internet being so prevalent and memes being such a popular form of expression on the internet. It's honestly one of the reasons why I personally believe that while the internet is a valuable resource for people of all kinds, it's also very much a breeding ground for stupidity, with people being allowed to freely speak their mind regardless who they offend in the process
I don't take Bionicle lore and designs seriously. I like noodleryx because it reflects my attitude towards Bionicle in general. Including it would be a mature and self-aware decision to make Bionicle a less serious story.
“How did this happen?” Because the bionicle community is more desperate for drama then keemstar after taking a week off the internet. Not that that’s a bad thing, drama is fun and since there was not much going. And then there’s the concern of what actually counts as a “duplicate account”. How do you get proof it is a “duplicate account”? I really doubt they were doing something like checking the IP addresses of everyone and the names and emails probably weren’t that obvious if they were “duplicate accounts”. So is it just new people? Well then if so, why should this TTV contest held by TTV members effect the default canon? At the very least this is a pretty fun drama cuz at its core, it’s making a funny meme out of a poorly run contest.
I love hoseryx, but the people who voted for her because they didn't like canon contests don't seem to know that revamps, mocs, and movs exist. Just because it exists as the canon version doesn't mean you can't make a different version
I don't really think it's fair for fans to flock to Greg for canon decisions. Throughout the Bionicle franchise there have been many writers and storytellers, so it's better left as a vague canon for fan interpretations
My problem with these things is that they assume Greg Farshtey can dictate canonicity. His writing was always bad and was never the only medium through which Bionicle fans came to understand the story.
Greg has many cool ideas, but often doesn't give them any room to properly flesh them out or even breathe, for that matter. i also dislike the cynical aspects of his writings. i especially HATE how horribly he handled Telluris' death in "Sahmad's Tale", just to make Sahmad look all cold and uncaring. That wasn't "eDgY" or "rEaL" it was just a pretentious character-assassination on one of my favorite Bionicle characters, who could've been one of the most complex and interesting characters of the whole bionicle-Lore.
Idunno I'm in the middle when it comes to Greg because he was the driving force between some of the absolute best years in Bionicle's canon imo but a lot of the flavortext was waaaay too medichloriany. I love the edge he brought to the series but I don't care for how he got rid of any semblance of mystique
All's I'm going to say, on this subject is... Whoever made Hoseryx was a mistake. That's it. It's not funny, it's not cute. If anything, it deserves a twelve-gauge to the mask without any hope of seeing the light of day again. Joke-builds shouldn't be made into canon characters. I'm honestly glad that TTV prevented that from happening, and even made a rule against that afterwards with their Artakha contest. And cue the entirety of this "Hoseryx Cult" trying to attack me for being to stuck-up and "not being able to take a joke" or some variant thereof in three...two...one...
Jesus CHRIST that is a cynical take. Dude you really need to chill, it's nowhere NEAR as bad as you're making it out to be. It was definitely disruptive of the contests, sure, and I'm glad they added a new rule preventing that kind of thing for future contests, but to say that this meme or it's creator deserves to be shot is REALLY not okay.
I was not saying the creator deserved to be shot, and I apologize for coming off that way. That creation, if it can even be called that, on the other hand... I get it, joke builds 'n all that, but considering the fact that it was put into a contest that was meant to be taken seriously, it's no wonder the Helryx contest turned out as much of a dumpster fire as it did. This THING sparked...way too much conflict for my liking. And I know that's a bit ironic, considering this whole conversation, but I am in no way against complaining about the situation this "Hoseryx" caused.
But the Bionicle fanbase were also the ones that made Hoseryx almost win? Do you think some random person looked at the contest and went "Look at these fools, I shall make a joke to prove I'm better than them" or something? Everyone on both sides of the story is part of the Bionicle fan base
As I said back when it happened:
"Hoseryx may not have won the contest, but she won our hearts."
That she certainly did.
"I doubt something like this will happen again."
I don't know if the brickbuilt Tahu determines if the closing statement aged like wine or milk.
Milk. Brickbuilt Tahu and Takua is a tribute set, nothing more. To bring back Bionicle properly, LEGO would have to bring back the Constraction system, which they got rid of in 2018.

I love the idea that if god knows everything, he knew he would lead to the creation of Hoseryx.
I think the wining entry doesn’t look like what I would think a first Toa would look like.
I remember being on the /toy/ threads when it happened.
12:20 Blessed is the mind too small for doubt. (You underestimate the power of memes)
I love how people genuinely got upset over this.
Anyone has a list of studio renders inspired by Bendyx?
"I think the bionicle community is done with meme entry"
Until lego made a meme entry themself xD
one time that the sheer force of memes beat 80% of the entire bionicle fandom and made them shit themselfs
Oh man... good times 😂
Nice
Nice
why did it take me over a year to find this video although one part of my videos is in it? xD good video nonetheless ;)
I see my name on the list at 124 lol
"I just think it was funny"
CHAD
memes...the DNA of the soul...
I don't know numbers but I would suspect /b/ did its work early on and then /biog/ started flooding later on.
dude i love videos abt small online communities doing weird stuff, this is great???
not to mention that the editing is incredible too??
Thank you so much! I like these kinds of videos too, that's why I wanted to make this!
great video
some of that fan art though
MY BUILD IS IN THEREEEE HAHA
Heck yeah it is! You did a phenominal job, there was no way I *wasn't* including it!
@@Wixhael spinelryx is forever
I would vote for hoserex
Hoseryx may not have been the legitimate winner but it DEFINITELY wasn't theunderscoreddouble
How so?
God speed hoseryx god speed
toys are serious bizznizz
This is why results should never be public and why TH-cam removed dislikes.
YES HOSEYREX OWN TECECLY
Wait is this why people keep trying to start drama with theunderscoreddouble?
BRO HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT SKINNY THING ALMOST OWN…. Wait I did watch all the vid
As has already been said by more based individuals than I: Any Poll's A Goal.
I can say I voted :)
And then the video ended
And thankfully, I contributed with screenshots from 4chan for the vid.
Heck yeah you did! Thank you so much, that was a huge help!
"One day, TTV had a *brilliant* idea:
LeT's dO a PoLl!"
I think it's a really nice MOC, but I agree it doesn't really scream "Helryx" to me; if anything it looks more like an overgrown Turaga.
This whole fiasco taught me the Bionicle community can't be trusted lmao
/biog/ WON
it was a cheat but they still own
“How did this happen?”
Because the bionicle community is more desperate for drama then keemstar after taking a week off the internet.
Nibble
Pathetic
And I know that's a bit ironic, considering this whole conversation, but I am in no way against complaining about the situation this "Hoseryx" caused.
fun hating losers cry about goofy looking character in toy line for children, sounds like the bionicle fan base to me
But the Bionicle fanbase were also the ones that made Hoseryx almost win?
Do you think some random person looked at the contest and went "Look at these fools, I shall make a joke to prove I'm better than them" or something?
Everyone on both sides of the story is part of the Bionicle fan base
