  • In this one-year LGR anniversary special, we take a look at The Need For Speed. The first game in the still-going series got its start on the forgotten 3DO game console, eventually being ported to DOS PCs.
This is a history and in-depth review and comparison of the 3DO and PC versions of the game.
The Need For Speed on Panasonic 3DO and MS-DOS computers
Also be sure and check out Part II where we'll look at TNFS:SE, the PS1 and Saturn ports as well as import variations.

3:11 Wow, that menu is pretty much the early 90s aesthetic in a nutshell. Such a perfect summary of what graphic design was like back then.
It's a fucking awful layout for a menu you have to navigate with a controller. But. 90s!

  • @mcgibs

It would have been nice if X-Man was more like a documentary host and his menu option would have him talk about various facts about each car.

I was just talking to my nephew about this game today. I thought it came with my very first computer but since it came out in 95 it was actually my second computer, the first real gaming one. Loved that game. I also loved the cheesy guy on the 3DO version. That console had a lot of games with video segments that were pretty much the same, Road Rash. Now to watch part 2 :)

  • @LGR
    @LGR  14 ปีที่แล้ว

@dave4shmups That question and more will be answered in part 2, which compares the PS1, Saturn and Windows versions.
Short answer though - they're darned close, but the 3DO seems a bit better in some ways graphically, while the PS1 is smoother/faster as far as framerate.

This game is a cult classic. I've just got it for my saturn, but I had for the ps1 back in 96. Truly a superb game, it has tracks with character, and a unique feel. The alpine course is unrivalled for conveying the illusion of actually going somewhere. One of the best from that golden era from 91-98, when games just went mental on a sensory level. Only the original wipeout could match it for impact at the time, although sega rally runs them close.
    Quality vid too matey, cheers!

I used to play the demo version of this on the PC. Once you got bored of actually racing, one of the coolest things to do was play with the ridiculous way your car spins in the air if you crash into a wall or opponent at top speed. No damage modeling in this game after all.

I had to comment on this review again. Some of the old school developers talk about the 3DO NFS version vs the Playstation version. If you watch 'lets play Monster Manor Level 7' by BolsEwhac here on youtube they talk about because of the success of Ridge Racer they took the PSX version of NFS and 'dumbed it down' and made it basically a different game. They made it more 'arcadey'. Which is probably why this 3DO version is considered to be the best version by many people.

@ladawg81 I hope to do both eventually. It's another of the few game series that I've played every single game quite extensively, so it's a prime candidate for a retrospective. And Porsche 2000/Unleashed is just awesome, I've been wanting to review it for a while. It's also strange how different (and inferior) the PS1 version is.

This game changed Arcade racers on the Computer for quite a while. I bought this and the SE edition of it. Brings back a lot of memories and I really liked the Alpine, City and Coastal scenarios as they were more enjoyable then the Track's IMO. I really like your reviews. Keep them coming. It's awesome blast from the past.
You should review some Lucas Arts games(Tie Fighter, Fate of Atlantis etc..) Heck even Star Wars Chess with it's 14 floppy disks would be a good one to review!

NFS was a game I really wanted to like, but sadly it was completely unplayable on my computer.
No matter what I did with the system, game settings, or combination of accelerating/braking/angles, the only way to make even slight turns was to slow down to 25 mph and mash the left or right button (or thumbstick).
NFS 2, 3:HP, High Stakes, and HP2 brought many, many hours of enjoyment. Porsche Unleashed brought back the inability to turn, for some reason. I wish the games had more input settings. Controls really make/break the racing game experience!

Dude, what you are talking about is arcade handling vs more simulator like handling. I am exactly the opposite to you, NFS 1 and NFS Porsche are BY FAR my favorite nfs games because of the handling and physics.

It sure did need it though. One of the first games we ever loaded up on our shiny new DX2, off a magazine cover disk ... and we wowed at it, even though it was obviously demanding far too much of the system. Even with the computer being brand new and costing as much as I tend to pay for a (used) car, you could feel a difference in smoothness between VGA and VGA "interlaced" (actually 320x100 rez o_O), let alone VGA / SVGA-lace (640x200) / SVGA. The fact it even OFFERED the lace modes was crazy.

This game was some kind of reference: all the racing games would have to be compared to this one.
But for me, when I tryed Need For Speed, it was a sign that I would never be comfortable with the "next gen". There was a bad feeling in it, I couldn't manage to get used to: it was cold, it was clean, something was missing. Since then, I'm stuck in the past.

@potemkin72 That's because I didn't see enough of a difference to merit mentioning it in what was already a very fact-filled review. There is a slight difference perhaps, but nothing to break the game or distract from the experience enough to complain. At least, that's my take. Is there a specific example where the physics break the game in DOS or PS1 ports?

Agree with other peoples comments on here, had some great fun on the 3DO playing this. Addictive game, great cars, great weaving in and out of traffic whilst racing the opponent and fleeing the cop car. Sadly NFS has gone steadily downhill since and this version is the sole classic. If they just update this version again with today's cars and online races they'd be on a winner. Here's wishing eh fans.....
