Today I attempt to review the humble origins of Need for Speed and why it's still worth your attention 27 years later!

I adored this game so much back in the 90ies. And I had to watch every replay, which you completely forgot to mention in your video. That was a killer feature!

I remember trialing this on the 3D0 at GameStop/or a something of that business back in the 90s. It was ok but wasn’t too enticing. I was not surprised the system died. It’s more of a collector item now, which is understandable.

Seeing this back in 1994/1995 was mind blowing. Going from Super Monaco GP on the Genesis/Mega Drive to this was quite the jump!

This vid and that DF retro on NFS has me convinced to give the older games a shot (I grew up with Underground 2 onwards)

I started with U2 myself actually. But as far as ranking it with the rest of the series goes: It really depends on your racing preferences.
I really like it because of just how simple and enjoyable it is just to chill out to. No big careers or stories to keep track of, no customization to speak of, just a small handful of cars and a few picturesque locales to drive through at your own pace. It's a pemise that I don't feel has really aged all that much even all these years later.

12 years old had the 3DO and this was the game I most played! The 911 porsche was my favorite to drive and still my dream car.

Yeah :D till 1999 the 3DO version of NFS was the best.. then the PSX version of NFS High Stakes. (NFS Porsche Unleashed on PC, Hot Pursuit 2 on PS2 were good but not as good).., then it was Underground 2 and Most Wanted. Some think that Pro Street is the best NFS game or even the best racing game of all time but nahhhh

Good review. To me the 3DO version of this game was the best racing sim until gran turismo 3 came out. RIP the X Man digitally immortalized. What emulator were you using for this?

But what about the PS1/Sega Saturn and the PC versions? Aren't they miles better?
It depends. I know some people prefer the 3DO ver. because of the slower, more realistic pace and more pronounced handling between cars. Whereas the later ports sped everything up and made the cars easier to handle in order to appeal more to the casual console playerbase.
In my opinion neither is better. Just different.
