I remember being impressed by the damage model at the time. Real-time deformation just wasn't something that racing games had back then, and you could really bend the cars into some fantastic shapes by smashing them up.

Thanks for the reviewing this game. You inspired me to try it. I like the game and I did end up beating it. It feels like a more open ended destruction derby version of Twisted Metal. I used to play those games a lot when I was a kid.
In Carmageddon I love how you can complete the races in a variety of ways. I would usually wreck everybody, but sometimes I couldn't because the other vehicle was too big and armored. In that case I would just finish the race. This only happened a couple of times though. I only beat a map by killing the pedestrians once just because I wanted to try it. I had the 'pedestrian respawn' and 'show pedestrians on map power-ups' that time which encouraged me to go for it; I can't imagine trying to hunt down every last pedestrian without either of them... that would take forever!
I didn't like how hard most of the power-ups were to find. And that weapon countdown timer can be brutal. Many times when I found the power-ups there was no one around and the timer would run out before I got to use it. :( That was always very disappointing. The power-ups should have been clearly visible on the track or the weapons should have been activatable. Or both could have been done for some real craziness. :D Then the game would have felt more like Wipeout or even Mario Kart, which I think would have been a good thing. It kinda sucks that the racing in this game isn't very rewarding: you don't get more game time for checkpoints and finishing the race gives you the least amount of completion bonus points. The racing and wrecking probably could have benefited from each other if they were more congruent. Making the race endless seems like it would work well and be a lot of fun as long as time was rewarded for checkpoints. I wonder if there are any good mods out like this. And I wonder if the game's sequels made any of these changes. Guess I'll go find out now. :)

This game is made of pure awesome and I think it's... err... awesome to see a review that agrees with that. For some reasons I always got the feeling Carmageddon doesn't get the love and recognition it should in the gaming media. It's pure 90s action bliss and few games, even modern ones, get close to that pure fun factor this game has in bundles.

Ahh the time when gaming didn't have to be morally coherent. :D Carmageddon 1 & 2 are some of the most memorable games of my personal gaming history.. And btw, here in Finland, we did get the uncensored version. I played the "zombified" version of Carmageddon 2 (or was it TDR2000?) somewhere, and it just felt wrong. I think they also had a version with robots instead of actual people.. These were mostly in the UK or Germany or someplace.. But yeah, I get chills just by watching this video. Awesome times. Thanks LGR. :)

I only played the the androids-version (sorry for the pun), or, how said it, robots. Personally I liked it betterthan the original. So I could set my eyes and ears more on the oversized weirdness, the great physics and audio engine, and the really cool soundtrack.
Yes this game brought me Fear Factory xD along with Mortal Kombat (movie)

  • @Damien.D
    @Damien.D 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fact : Carmageddon is the first game combining a real physics engine with deformable models, open environnement, sandbox playing if you like. It's the ancestor of anything like modern GTA and the such. I used to hack the game when I was young to modify specs of cars. A 100 tons earthmover is a thing you dream to lay your littles hands on in your kiddy sandbox, so I made one myself in Carmageddon. Yeah, I actually had a retail copy of the early uncensored EU red blood version when I was 12. I'm perfectly chemically balanced nevertheless.
Also developed by Stainless Steel. Because good games are like good knives, they never rust.

    • @davidsenra2495

Actually, Carmageddon and GTA were contemporaries, they both came out in 1997 (and contributed to the general hysteria back then). But I see what you're saying, and I somewhat agree.

Oh the joy of automobile carnage. I still have the box for the second UK release. The bold graphic's, innovative gameplay and music kept me entertained for a long time. My favorite way of winning the race was snagging the pedestrians until I found that they were positioned in hard to get area's. The pedestrian respawn power up allowed one to get the total pedestrian count (up to 700 or more) and win the race with tons of money (due to a bug that didn't reset the ped count). There were a relatively small number of modders that made custom vehicles and tracks (which greatly added to replay value). Thank you for the trip down nostalgia road.

Hey! You could make a Doom II review! (Hahahahaha just kidding, you're gonna get it)
Carmageddon is an amazing game! The PC version is much more difficult than the Android port because you can't be eliminated and your car can't be stuck sideways (which happens A LOT) on the PC version!
About the cars and the career mode, I always liked to choose Max but to use Ana's car instead. Since Max's is front wheel drive and Ana's is rear wheel drive, you get a lower chance to get eliminated trying to do so with your opponents. After all the races was concluded, the opponents give you a copy of their car keys. So you can pick up the Stella's car (which is capable of electrocute people by default) and your task to kill all the pedestrians become a little bit less suffering!
And what about the 6-wheeled cop car?!
Thanks, LGR, for such a great review! I still play Carmageddon on my Android nowadays. Awesome game!

This game was fun for 20 minutes and that was about it. The maps were huge and it was easy to get a little lost or just waiting for an enemy car to drive by to destroy. There was one level that had a giant lake or somesuch and it took forever to get out of.

I remember when I got it, I was 13 years old... and it was a recommendation from the seller (no joke). It was the zombified version. Hopefully, I got a patch from the CD of a magazine and then, I got the real game. It was AWESOME, really a good time.
Carmageddon 2 in the other hand was... meah. More bonuses, sort of challenges after some tracks, etc. It was better than the first one, but the main problem I got was the physics. Anything who looked like a small pylon, like the sides of a fence (the center of fences was destructible, but not their supports at the sides) could literally CUT you in half if you crashed on it, and so you die. I don't remember if the first one was concerned by that, but in this one, it was so regular that I still have a sort of PTSD from it. I had to play slowly and carefully to avoid dying stupidly. I finished the game, but this annoyance affected the fun I got from the game.
I still didn't try Carmageddon: Reincarnation despite buying it. I hope I will get the same feeling that the first one... or I will just have to reinstall my old CD :)

Yup, FF did part of the soundtrack and I think God Lives Underwater did some songs too. FF also did the soundtrack to Messiah. Interplay was the shit back then.

I was playing Carmageddon 2 years ago and my mom at the time kept complaining about the screaming "Why you playing that awful game?". Then she gave it a shot, and not knowing how to control it very well ended up running over 20 peds accidentally and was having a ball laughing her head off.
There's a Carmageddon kickstarter in the works, hopefully it rocks.

This is the Carmageddon 1 review, not 2!
Edit: just realize I didn't add the two in the first comment.

Nice little trivia; the same people that brought you Carmageddon also brought you most of the home versions of Rodland; you know that ame that was "so cute it'll make you puke" slogan (under the name Storm/ Sales Curve, then later to just Sales Curves), Sales Curves would later be named Sales Curve Interactive and the rest is history.

LGR I wanted to cry when I got this game for free on my iPod. It is the Freebird equivalent of pure car destruction fun.

I looked on your channel and could not find it, just in case I missed it, but you would enjoy Redline (you probably have already played it). It is seriously duke nuke em (more late 90's style) combined with Carmageddon. Some quite silly, almost campy 90's attitude, first person shooter with post-apocalyptic vehicle combat.
