Ryzen 5000 CPUs for Video Editing? (And How to Get One)

  • Late last year, AMD released a new line of powerful and exciting CPUs. The confusingly named Ryzen 5000 series (don't ask me why they skipped the 4000s) is a noticeable bump up from what came before in both multi-threaded and single-threaded applications. Alongside boosts in performance offered by Premiere and After Effects (finally) focusing on optimization, and things are starting to look really exciting.

    I absolutely adore your way of presenting this information, both the graphs and the general pace of your videos. I gain a little bit every single time I watch one of your videos. Please keep them coming!
    A question for the wiser than me: I am looking into ways to speed up my After Effects workflow and am getting more and more hooked on investing in a new CPU. I currently have a Ryzen 7 1700X and, judging solely by benchmark tests, it seems like I could gain quite a lot from picking up a Ryzen 5 5600X. But that's just based on overall benchmark comparisons, not a program specific comparison. Do any of you have a rough guess on how these two CPU's would compare in a head-to-head when it comes to After Effects?
    (Just for good measure: I never reach the threshold of my 32 GB of RAM, so that does not seem like the obvious place to upgrade for now. I am also contemplating on getting my hands on a new GPU, but it seems like, for now, that a new CPU would be a better piece to start with.
    Thanks in advance!

    I am currently using a AMD FX-8370 for recording my games and editing. I use obs and use filmora for editing. I play Sims 4 at the moment and everything works fine so far. I recently got the 5 6000x due to reviews saying it's great for games, but I haven't found a video saying it's good for streaming, recording and editing. I plan on recording Sims 4, Among us, Walking Dead. GTA V, Saints Row, etc. I don't do big editing, just trim and add audio. Will it still be good for this type of requirement I'm looking for? I only got the cpu for now, so I haven't tried anything yet.

    Premiere for AMD and Intel can now offload to the GPU........but the only problem with that is you can't get your hands on any GPU in the market without paying double to triple MSRP.....and trying to get your hands on a "new" model is almost impossible. So frustrating. I'm stuck with a 7 year old Nvidia 970 and was so hoping to upgrade to the 3070 :(

    In Ryzen processors that dont have integrated graphics, they wont even boot without a graphics card is it ? SO to know if a processor is DOA, ill need to have a graphics card and if the graphics card is busted i wont even know which is dead, processor or graphics card. Am i understanding this correctly... its a very basic qstn that anyone who has ever built a recent AMD system would know... yet they hardly comment to just hint in 1 line and help.

    Would you say for someone who uses large After Effects projects once a month (or every other month), the 5600x is the better option to look into over the 5800x? My R5-2600 is killing me on the days I need to use those projects. Especially when I find a problem and go back for a revision.

    I went for the Threadripper Pro, and going more into the compute side with A100s. So I got the best of both worlds, After Effects and AI / Deep Learning for 2021.
    As for AMD Epyc this year and their dual sockets, wow, over my asking price but sure hope to see 2022 new AMD5 and DDR5. To me, that will be a smarter choice (at least for now).

    I understand that overclocking and undervolting a CPU is specific to each unit, I also understand the same is true for RAM timings: STILL THOUGH... I would really like to see somebody produce a video that goes something like this: "hey guys, here's how to undervolt and overclock both your CPU and your RAM for the best possible video editing performance while remaining stable one step above stock performance but well below extreme overclocking"
    I have a feeling the reason nobody does that is because it's risky and very different for every unit...
    but I still think...
    The right person could produce this video for the whole video editing community?

    • @sparksight
      @sparksight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just looking at price vs. performance and focusing entirely on Premiere, then yeah. The 5900x is a little better but also more expensive. But once you flip over to After Effects the 5900x wipes the floor with the 3900x. So it kind of depends on what you do most with your system. People have different priorities for sure, and considering the 5900x and 5950x are really hard to buy right now, I'd happily recommend the 3900x to anyone looking to use their PC for editing.

    • @atf56
      @atf56 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sparksight can't agree more! Even a 5600x is slightly better than 3900x for AE, right? If you are focused on ae, then a 5800x would be just fine but sacrificing on multi core performance. Overall 5900x is the best all-rounder right now.
