  • After a couple years of using the Rode NT1, I have moved onto a superior microphone, the Sennheiser MKH8020, with a mostly omnidirectional polar pattern.

    Sounds much better than the old one. It doesn't even sound like a microphone anymore.

    Would be interesting to see you get into microphones. Sharur, what do you think about using microphones meant for instruments or for outdoor stuff, basically anything besides studio vocal applications, for vocals, i.e. singing and voiceover? Can they really sound better than microphones actually made for vocals? Since this mic has a omni polar pattern what do you think of using it for those applications?

      This microphone is superior for singing and voiceover than any cardioid microphone if you are in an uncompromised room.

    its a great sounding mic, yes, but a microphone is often stationary so i wouldn't care for cardiod pattern, and if i were to move there are small wireless shirt mics that work wonders too... its an odd choice especially for the price...

    I’ll have to order four of them to record some music with a 7ft grand piano. These should mix easily, relative to others. Just the excuse I’ve needed to pick up an RME interface too.

    Just get the Shure SM7B like everyone else. It's in every professional studio, and all the major content creators use it. The best recordings have minimal room noise unless capturing the room's sound for creative purposes. Modern recordings typically have a very dry sound because it sounds best that way. Even when you get close to an omnidirectional microphone, you'll still hear the room.

      sm7b isn't natural

    • @Sebastian_Baran
      @Sebastian_Baran 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Sharur1 You're equating sounding natural with hearing the ambience of the recording environment, but that's a false equivalence. What makes a vocal recording sound natural is not the overuse of effects, which you probably don't use anyway, so that should be of no concern to you. All microphones with a flat response will sound natural because they simply capture the audio as it is. Besides, why should sounding natural be a priority? Shouldn't sounding good be the priority? As a content consumer, the best voiceovers don't necessarily sound natural; they just sound good. This means there's no distortion, the tonality is right (the bass, mids, and treble are well balanced, which is the case with both the Shure and Rode), and there's no room ambience. Yes, room ambience in voiceovers sounds bad. You can use your Rode NT1 with high gain and talk softer to avoid engaging the room reflections as much, but this will be less exciting, so you need to consider the tradeoff. This is why many people prefer the Shure SM7B: it's neutral, cardioid, and dynamic, capturing the differences between the highs and lows in your speech (the "dynamics"), which retains the liveliness in the recording while not capturing room ambience. All the professional studios have them, the most popular content creators use them, and Michael Jackson's Thriller album was recorded entirely on a Shure SM7B.

      @@Sebastian_Baran Michael Jackson uses Shure SM7, which is the previous model and is a bit different.
      -It has a very little differences (0.5 dB to 2 dB). SM7B is more linear in the mids. SM7 has smoother treble.
      -You can listen comparisons on YT, but imo, the most differences is on guitar amp recording than vocals.

    For pricier option you can try schoeps and voice technologies .And on cheaper options lectrosonics , mxl 2003A have true to real life outputs. All are better compared to sennheiser :)

      @Sharur1  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      MXL 2003A has a lumpy response and an inaccurate polar pattern. Schoeps Colette with MK2 capsule seems good though. 1 dBA higher self-noise and 8 dB lower max SPL than sennheiser though :)

      @@Sharur1 I am no expert, but from what I've been told by people that work with this sort of thing, I heard them talk how different mics are "better" for different voices.
      I'm guessing they mean that they are sometimes not looking for a 100% real voice and might want to emphasize something for artistic effect?
      I am no professional, I'm just guessing (throwing shit at the wall to see if it sticks lol) why they might have said that.

    Overkill. If those are your parameters you should use a DPA 4006, a commercial version of the B&K measurement mic.
    You would be surprised to see the amount of EQ applied to every mic on a commercial record. And they use mics of every coloration, far from perfect. Michael Jackson used an SM7B on Thriller, for example.
    A shotgun is better if used outside, inside it colors the sound too much. For movies and series they use a hypercardioid on a boom or DPA 4060 hidden in wigs, hairs, clothes or furniture. Don't know about USA, but here in Euroland the MKE40 is the lavalier of choice in TV, it's a cardioid for a more commanding voice and track separation in interviews. Lately they're using more and more DPA 4060 in skin tone on an arch, sounds better, but it's also ugly to see on TV.
    The real advantage of the 8020 is that it's an RF condenser, so immune to humidity. The previous MKE30, 50, 60 etc are the top choice for nature recordists.

    • @Sharur1
      @Sharur1  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Why DPA 4006 over MKH8020? It has a 5 dBA higher self noise than MKH8020

      @@Sharur1 But can you even hear that in normal use? EIN could change even over time and from unit to unit. Sometimes specs data are the best case scenario, sometimes the worst case scenario, sometimes they're the project specs they had in mind but the final product turns out even better. For example the AT3032 were ok (16dB) on paper, but someone measured them and they turned out way better (8dB, who knows if that guy got lucky, the measurement is wrong or they're really that good. I have a pair, they're good and quiet, but can't tell if EIN is 16, 8 or 20, and honestly I don't care). Word spread out, they became favorite for nature recordists on a budget, then AT found out they made a little overspec'd masterpiece, they retired the product and reintroduced it with a different name (AT4022) at double the price.
      Anyway, according to the graphs the 4006 is smoooother up top, even though it stops earlier. Who knows if the graphs are smoothed or embellished in some way. I was semi serious and making fun with the B&K measurement grade yada yada.
      But seriously, I took part in a full orchestra recording and two 4006 were used at the side of the orchestra, spaced A-B, mounted on 5 meter poles, pointed up, so "the good side" was picking up the reflection off the ceiling, the back "not so smooth side" was picking the direct sound of the orchestra. There was also an XY pair above the director podium, and close spot mics for every instrument, all the spot ones were of different kind, from Schoeps cardio, to a MD441, to a vintage Fostex ribbon placed between two brass instruments to pick them up in a figure 8. All the mics were later time aligned in the DAW. All the spot mics were EQed in some manner. No one during the production ever said "damn, those 4006 are too noisy!" or that any other mic was too noisy. All the musicians were more noisy by just breathing and moving.
