A pretentious pseudo-nerd questioned me about Dolby Atmos, so I put him in his place by explaining why it is terrible. My Discord Server: / discord #audio #audiophile #hifi #headphones #earphones #iems
Gee there is not *that much* difference between the Dolby Curve and Toole's measured room curves averaged over 3 positions with KEF 105.2 speakers, fig 5.4.c in Sound Rep 3rd Ed. If anything, the Dolby Curve isn't steep enough.
I think atmos for headphones(with the right settings)is fine. It simulates crosstalk of speakers pretty decently, preserves the frequency reaponse and doesnt go overboard with the 3d effect
@@Sharur1 I think you misunderstood what im saying a bit. I mean that regular stereo recordings, not ones made for atmos, will sound better through atmos for headphones because of the crosstalk. As for actual Atmos mixes, I do also think that alot of them are either hit or miss depending on how well they were actually made
@@niccster1061 i don't know about acourate but to introduce to mass audience how beautiful a sound can be produced dirac offers opteo technology for smartphones like Dolby Atmos but different it gives users studio quality pleasing sound to users with so much clarity and pure and deep boosted bass. maybe because it is based on x curve, i mean the target response for a cinema room not a personal room, do to the much subwoofers they use nd much directed speakers with no other choice to left than killing the treble for an average flat, idk
Last time I was listening to my garbage, there was a bug inside it making some odd noises, but they sounded pretty good. Very realistic. All in all, garbage doesn't sound inaccurate. Not sure how garbage would sound when it's complete though.
@@Sharur1I dug my self too deep down that rabbit hole. True hd + object data or the mastering format can have alot of objects and no base layer/ignore the base layer (but I think true hd at least is still requiredto have it). However eac3+joc (streaming atmos) will generally have a 7.1.4 base layer and a set number of object channels due to bandwidth limitations. (I believe it fits in an arc stream not even earc) True hd unfortunately is undocumented publicly so there isn't much you can do but there is a mostly completed eac3+joc decoder. (That can even output with custom hrtfs) and boy do I like the effect for movies I personality made a few generic samples and the dune spice scene was a great example of the improvements. Unfortunately for these audio formats the underlying software is just as important for clarification, with electronic music complacating that. If the atmos target curve is treated like the riaa curve for printing records it's dumb but passable I just don't know how it's applied I need to read that document at some point. (The studio is mixing with the curve applied not in mind) Anyway I haven't listened to atmos music. This is strictly from a music/games perspective. (Games is another massive rabbit hole as games can just pass raw object data to a render and have 1000's of objects)
I went to a workshop for DTSX back in 2017 when the 3-D audio format wars were in full effect Atmos and auro 3-D were being demonstrated and at the end everyone preferred DTSX but we all know how that turned out. Atmos is a rabbit hole…. and much cheaper than DTSX to implement.
I don’t think I can say too much about it, but what I can say is two of the products were extremely innovative, and mind blowing, and one of the products was cheaper to implement both hardware and software wise and had wider appeal as it did not require an active Internet connection with a Blu-ray or a separate data stream for online streaming services.
I get ur point but imagine a helicopter in a movie flying above your head, or explosions and conversations happening behind you. The experience with stereo apart from music is so disappointing
ASR and atnos liemax sound is getting a roasting , i don't give many shhhhh xxxx about, dub stages , cinemas or home cinema rubbish atmos anymore , real life , mixers need to get out of those dark dub stages and experience real sound outdoors as they are utterly rubbish at sound mixing at present

Which Atmos are you referring to? The calibration for 7.1.4 or DSP Atmos for headphones and soundbars?
Atmos is not 7.1.4. That just happens to be a common speaker setup used to mix/listen to atmos. Dolby Cinemas have around 200 speakers.

What about Sony MDR-7506?
didnt get to the end of the video yet but what do you propose as an alternative
stereo for music and 5.1 or 7.1 for movies. Stereo is also fine for movies though, really.
@@Sharur1 no need for any of that.
WINDOWS SONIC BEATS ALL
Good data and all, but I gotta admit my brows were so low I spontaneously learned mandarin everytime the strawman guy was on.
Dolby Atmos might not be it but surround sound in general is the future.
Stereo can’t reproduce the sound field nearly as well as 5 speakers or more
no doubt multi channel audio has benefits
but tonality is the number one determiner of perceived sound quality
This is a meme potencial

i'm not saying stereo is better than surround sound for movies
