Talent is one thing, but Bobby Darin had so much more. Humble, caring, no huge ego, great sense of humor, and just a darn nice human being. A fair number of people have talent, but almost no one has all the qualities that Walden Robert Cassotto had.
I was born in the proper time and while I enjoy this music I don't know if I could give up having nearly all human knowledge at my fingertips and being less than a minute from any type of music I want to listen to. My age is irrelevant, as is my taste in music, and I say to those who claim to be "born out of their generation" or who say they "have an old soul" that they are living in a wondrous age and the greatest time to be alive, each and every day we take steps forward into the unknown and discover things we never thought possible. Look out into the world and find what makes you happy and know that in nearly every generation in the past you wouldn't have half the opportunities you have now, be happy for who you are and when you're alive because you're only given one trip, so make it a good one.

I imagine a time, back in - perhaps - the 50s when the world was big. When there was a point in asking "How are you doing?" from a friend that haven't seen for two years, because you didn't know already. Back when people left their countries or their continents to look for luck elsewhere, to chase their dreams. When they went to America, the land where dreams came true. Or to France or to Japan or whereever the hell they could imagine themselves. And here I am laying in bed at 1 am, during a pandemic, imagining myself travelling to a different part of the world to try my luck, writing at the light of a candle every week to my loved one, who is waiting for me - beyond the sea.
He was born Walden Robert Cassotto in East Harlem, NYC. He died at the age of 37. His beautiful voice will live on forever. He is just another great Italian who has blessed America with his wonderful talent.
Love the entire song. Bobbys phrasing, his pitch. Awesome. But that band!!! Drums really keeping the beat. But lets mention THOSE HORNS! LOVE THEM. The piano is no slouch either. Add the strings and its perfect. RIP Bobby. ❤️

That generation had its own problems. Some we still have today.... Stop dwelling on what "you missed" and live in the moment. Believe it or not there will be people in 50 years saying the same thing about the 2010's embrace the time period you were dealt bro.
@@spencer9093 I'm very well familiar with their problems. Those problems in hindsight weren't as bad because they weren't completely atomized, and most were significantly better educated so they had the means to improve on those problems. Very few these days do.

I'm listening to this today for Steve Hillenburg. I dunno if he knew much of this song, but the man sure loved the sea and it reminds me of him. Thanks for the joy you brought to us Steve, we'll see you beyond the sea. And of course we'll see Bobby there too.
I'm a 55 model listening to acid crap rock in the 70s until I went to SC for college where I fell in love with the 50s and 60s music not to mention the beautiful Southern belles!!!
"In prison, dinner was always a big thing. We had a pasta course and then we had a meat or fish. Paulie did the prep work. He was doing a year for contempt."
gutz1981 "He had this wonderful system for doing the garlic. He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that it would liquify in the pan with just a little oil. It was a very good system."
Johnny Dio did the meat. We didn't have a broiler so he did everything in pans. It used to stink up the place something awful, and the hacks used to die, but he still cooked a great steak.
I just pulled the music to this composition. I am a musician trained back in the 60's when we had to read and write music before we called ourselves a musician. This is real music. Bobby Darin was a crooner. Just wrapping his butt off. He left us too soon.
You couldn’t be more right. Just turned 75 and saw the entire evolution of rock ‘n’ roll or perhaps more accurately modern music. To me this is the best song ever! Those of you in my age group that those of you still wet behind the years I wouldappreciate your comments.
I'm actually just a youngin to you guys but I do agree. THIS is true music, but would you guys believe it if I told you this song was originally written and sang by a french artist named Charles Trenet and the original title of the track was, "La Mer" in translation "The Sea"? It surprised me and had me stumped, all versions are worth a listen. I personally prefer, in french, a version performed by not only a singer but an actor named Yves Montand. Very popular man, such a small world.

@@Guijardb this doesn't contradict my words, I meant to say that even original French lyrics fit well with Bobby Darin's arrangement, and such covers have been done on TH-cam more than once.

I was born in 1956 and also bought my children up with many songs from the 30’s to the 50’s and it forms part of their memories of their childhood for which I am so glad. Music is a wonderful carrier of memories ( also tears)
So, decades ago we knew Bobby was going to die young; it was so tender-sweet, knowing we would lose this amazing performer and person. Its still, so many, many years later he is deeply missed. With today's medical skill, he would easily be saved from the heart trouble that took him so young. He's fun to watch, had such a stage presence.
“Don’t put too many onions in the sauce” “I didn’t put too much onions eh Paul, three small onions that’s all I did” “Three onions?” “How many cans of tomatoes you put in their.” “I put two cans, two good cans” “Two cans? You don’t need three onions”
RIP Bobby Darin. You left a huge void in the music world with your premature departure. You were an entertainer par excellence with a captivating voice. You're greatly missed.
Fond memories of growing up in the sixties, when I hear this song, I picture sitting on the beach watching sail boats, air planes flying above, and thinking what a beautiful world we live in. And decades later my thoughts disappeared somewhere beyond the sea.
Absolutely, born in 1950, I was ALWAYS a big fan, and during the late 50s and early 60s, with so many great doo wop and bee boop artists and many great crooners, he stood out. He was my favorite. His stage presence and sense of rhythm were top drawer. Mack the Knife was as good as Beyond the Sea. Next to Bobby, maybe Dion (with the Belmonts for a while). One can get lost in nostalgia.

This is a song I never get tired of. When I first heard it in the 60s on the radio. The drum caught my attention and they still do. A power house of a band also. Bobby Darin was so under rated and left us too soon....
This song is just magical! I love it so much same with Bobby Darin he just has such a wonderful voice. And his Documentary was so interesting I never knew he actually was really sick when he was younger and had trouble breathing so it was hard to sing.

I knew it from age 8, when this became a big hit for Bobby Darin in 1960. My mom bought the 45 RPM record, and played it often while she was doing housework. I remember listening to it from jukeboxes in diners and restaurants. It stayed in the tabletop jukeboxes till they became obsolete.
It really bums me out thinking about how long ago things were. (it also feels really weird. like. 1960 shouldn't be 63 years ago. the 80s also don't feel like 40 years ago and the 90s certainly don't feel like 30 fucking years ago. what the hell?) and i'm sure it'll continue to bum me out as i get older. shit, i'll probably live to see the last WW2, Korea, and Vietnam veterans go.) it also really bums me out knowing i'll never be able to experience any of it. i missed out on the twentieth century. perhaps the single greatest century in human history.

And here I am laying in bed at 1 am, during a pandemic, imagining myself travelling to a different part of the world to try my luck, writing at the light of a candle every week to my loved one, who is waiting for me - beyond the sea.
...I really enjoyed your writing. Do you write more somewhere else? :)
Nice writing!
The land where dreams come true?! Don't make me laugh.
Sure, romanticise the past and lament the present. That's productive.

This is magnificent, it's the best use of technology, Bobby Darin may have died but his voice is kept alive throughout the ages.
This is a classic French song from Charles Trenet ' 'La Mer'. It's beautiful in any language....a real classic!

(it also feels really weird. like. 1960 shouldn't be 63 years ago. the 80s also don't feel like 40 years ago and the 90s certainly don't feel like 30 fucking years ago. what the hell?) and i'm sure it'll continue to bum me out as i get older. shit, i'll probably live to see the last WW2, Korea, and Vietnam veterans go.)
it also really bums me out knowing i'll never be able to experience any of it.
