In Man O War's time tracks were slower and there were no starting Gates. Just a Rope. The race that he lost was when Rope went up Man O War was heading opposite direction. Greatest Horse of All Time
Just visited Man o' War's resting place at Kentucky Horse Park. You go too--a wonderful day. No one really knows how fast Man o' War could run. He was never completely given his head. His only "loss" was really a win: several mistakes by his jockey put him back by only one stride--in one stride more he would have won. Everyone knew it then, and we still know. He was never really beaten.
Please be mindful in every single race MAN O' WAR'S shoes were made of STEEL. Today's horse shoes are made of ALUMINUM. That is a huge difference. The weight of the steel shoes along with carrying the highest weight on the back of any racehorse , could not stop MAN O WAR. He was retired by Mr Riddle because the weight that would be assigned to MAN O WAR, would have been inhumane. The greatest horse of all time. That's all.
He only raced 2 and 3 year olds. The only time he raced an older horse was against a very unsound Sir Barton in a wacky public workout. Secretariat faced the best older horse five times on dirt and turf. Citation raced everyone and gave away unfair amounts of weight. Riddle was afraid to put weight on him and run him against the best. That was the name of the game….the real test of a race horse. Riddle didn’t want any part of it. We shall never know how good he was or was not. However, we do know how great others were by the quality of their competition……Not by their horseshoes. Secretariat could have run with lead horseshoes.
@@laurenurban3942 People always find excuses to bolster what they make themselves believe, but Secretariat was and will always be number one. He was literally built different than any other horse in history. He literally had an oversized heart. He was unbeatable when healthy. Man O War was probably the second best ever, but we have to be real here. Big Red (Secretariat) just was an anomaly.

Not criticizing, but we should all be honest and factual. Secretariat would have won against any horse , anywhere and at any time in history if healthy. If he wanted to win by a nose, he would.. if by thirty lengths, he would have period.

@@TimesUp777 yes and no. The reports for MOW were almost invariably that he ran at leisure and restrained. Not so for Sec. (“Handily” means “hand-ridden”, which actually means urged, not freely.). For MOW as a 3yo not surprising since he hardly had any opponents. Furthermore, Turcotte said e.g. on Sec loss (Wood?) that he just didn’t want to run. None of the 4 jockeys for MOW ever said that. Also Earl Sande HOF said his arms were killing him trying to restrain MOW and didn’t want to ride him again.
Yes, but then we MOW nuts do it too. Imagine now with the 50th celebration for Sec. meanwhile, MOW was shafted for his century anniversary since COVID hysteria nixed everything.

Yes but breeding back then was tricky. Only the rich people , who could afford to import a European stallion to America, had the really good bloodlines and stock. Calumet, claireborne, belair stud, the Whitney’s, Hertzs, Mars, Meadow Stud, Vanderbilt and Phipps families, etc….had access to the best, most productive stallions in the country. That’s why Calumet Farms was able to breed so many champions back then…..they had a great European bred stallion as their foundation sire….Bull Dog. Same thing with Belair Stud back in the day….they had Sir Gallahad III. Every successful racing stable back in the day had access to a well bred European imported stallion.
He was the second greatest. Secretariat is number one. If they raced ten times when both healthy and in their prime, Man O War would lose ten times. Of course Secretariat did suffer when he had an abscessed tooth, but if healthy he could not lose to Man O War even. I think any rational Horse person would have to admit that fact.
My dream race would be, Manno vs Secretariat vs Seattle Slew vs Phar Lap vs Seabiscuit vs Citation vs Eclipse vs Damascus. My dream race featuring fillies & mares would be Ruffian vs Black Caviar vs Zenyatta vs Rachel Alexandra vs Go For Wand vs Lady's Secret.

It would be great, if it were possible, to see a match race between these two. Both were big, fast and competitors. However, to my way of thinking, a side-by-side comparison isn't really possible. Track technology, shoes, handicapping, one used a starting gate, one used a rope, changed distances and many other factors come into play when comparing them side-by-side. Personally, I'm a MOW fan. I learned of him when I was a child and it was love at first read. His 21 starts and 20 wins says it all for me. As for his not winning the Triple Crown that's inconsequential. The Triple Crown didn't carry the same weight that it does today and his owner believed that early May was too early to run a champion horse. I watched Secretariat run and win the Triple Crown (on TV) and loved him also. But, he wasn't and will never be a Man O'War.
There is little question about it: The greatest racehorse ever was "Big Red." Take your choice. Both Man O' War and Secretariat were known by that nickname.
Absolutely love Both MOW and Secretariat ! Wish there better footage of MOW. But Secretairiats run when he won by 21 lengths is a race a view often and each time it brings me to tears of Gods Magnificiat creation !
@mjjddh, Man o war was good but he's not in Secretariat's league. Mow couldn't compete with Secretariat he would only come in second or third against Secretariat.
Too bad MOW will never be as great as the greatest horse of all time, Secretariat! Don’t forget, Secretariat never got to run as a 4 and 5 year old, when he would have been in his physical prime. He was just a little baby when he retired as the greatest race horse ever.
Man o War may be the greatest American Thoroughbred to have raced but no other horse in history over the whole has done what PHAR LAP did in 1930 winning 4 G1 races in succession in the same week SAT&TUES-THUR-SAT,esp winning the melb cup 3200mtrs with 68kg then fronting up 2days later and winning the G1 1600mtrs untouched ,this is the greatest horse in my opinion to grace any track in the world he even went to Mexico via the USA and won the G1 there with a injured leg im an Aussie but Phar Lap was NZ bred but raced in Australia then went overseas an beat the best racing thourobred there as well
I read all the comments about how people want to compare Man O War with Secretariat. I look at it this way, I believe in my heart that Man O War came back in Secretariat to finish what he never got to, to win the triple crown. If you look at Secretariat's lineage, you will find that his color, Chestnut is not of his sire's, his dame or even his grandparents or great grandparents. How strange. They were both called big red, they both shared the same attitude and they both had the X Factor (Large Hearts). So many other similarities also. So I strongly believe Secretariat may be a reincarnation of Man O War. Just saying. God works in mysterious ways people.
My understanding is MOW had a difficult temperament, whereas Sec was affable. A large heart might just be something required to be among the greats. A common nickname isn't really anything to write home about. It's almost as if reincarnation is completely made up.
A chestnut from Bay ancestry happens in a way that can be explained by genetics. Secretariat has a chestnut ancestor in his sires broodmare sire. That would be a grandparent. Miss Disco was by Discovery who did in fact have the same line as MOW. Many old time horsemen have said Secretariat most resembled Discovery.
Only the ignorant compate them. Both great horses. In eras so different. Factors than improved over time. Ex, track surfaces, weights carried etc. Man O War was great. An outstanding sire. His "get" became legends.
He's just standing there. Except when he looks like a fly is on his belly. They take out race horses these days and the chains are across their chins or noses or their gums. And the way they mass breed and mass dump horses. The heart isn't there anymore
No bashing Manowar. But secretariat also could not run and show his full potential. They made him stop running when he turned three years old he couldn’t run as a four year old horse when he was more developed, so neither one got to run to their full potential.😊

Plus he carried up to 138lbs which is pretty much unheard of😉and was never allowed to run his full speed
Actually his timings pretty good for now!! & Under restraint on those tracks..on those shoes-steel--and timed from the barrier-from a standing start.
And his shoes were heavier. And the modern racetracks are more refined.
A great horse.. deserves all the accolades he's been given.
When is someone going to make a dramatic movie about MOW? With the popularity of Downton Abbey and other period movies his story would go over well
Shoulders like boulders! Fine strong horse.
The look of eagles. This is what horse people call greatness. Regardless of the horses discipline.
