Man o war was no freak he was created through the hand of God to teach us to have heart and to never give up in the face of adversity he was beautiful always and forever the heart of a champion! !!! He will live on forever in everyone's hearts and those who love him !!!! Myself included
Hey Brenda? the word "freak" is one used in several horse industries who is able to go way above and beyond what a "normal", average horse can do. It's not a derogatory word in this sense.
An Angel from heaven that leaves you breathless from his incredible beauty❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😇😇😇😇😇🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️ I would love to have a horse like the great legend Man O War!!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😇😇😇😇😇😇❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When I was just a kid,we lived in the San Fernando Valley. My dad would take to see the horses at Santa Anita race track. Once when went to see the horses at the stable, a trainer asked me who my favorite race horse was. I said Man of War. He took out a pack of cards and handed me the one for Man of War. I had it for a long time but lost it during a move. I sure wish I still had it.
Honestly I think it’s because he never did anything that noteworthy. Now, don’t take that the wrong way. I think MOW and Secretariat are probably 1a and 1b when it comes to the best racehorses ever, but take Seabiscuit for example. He led a very interesting life, so did his owner and jockey and ultimately beat War Admiral in a match race when he was a severe underdog. I don’t know if it actually was a Disney movie but it practically seemed like one. A movie about him actually made sense. Secretariat, although not actually world records (except for the 1.5 mile) broke the records and they still stand as records today, 50 years later, in all 3 Triple Crown races. He did have a couple losses, so he wasn’t perfect, but some people say there were mitigating factors for those losses. Anyway, what he did in the Triple Crown races was truly special. They were able to make his movie interesting too. MOW was obviously almost indescribably great. He’s not a Triple Crown winner, but come on…does anybody really think he wouldn’t have won had he raced in the 1920 Kentucky Derby? But unfortunately he didn’t. So as it stands, he was just a very dominant horse. I just don’t see how they could make a movie about a great horse that went 20-1 over a two year span, then retired and went out to stud.
@@Whoopdido777 He was the second most popular athlete in the Country behind only Babe Ruth. People forget how popular Horse Racing used to be. During MOW's era, Horse Racing was only behind Baseball and Boxing. I'm sure that you know that there was no true Triple Crown race during his time period. The Belmont was a bigger race than the Kentucky Derby and the winner of the Derby didn't even wear roses until decades after Sir Barton. A movie should center around the match race of the Century and the Trainers, American Sam Riddle and Canadian J.K.L. Ross. Don't forget the amazing Exterminator who was invited to race alongside Sir Barton and Man O War but his Trainer believed the distance was too short. Riddle was an interesting man with an interesting story as well. You can also get into MOW's son War Admiral, his accomplishments and his match race against MOW's grandson Seabiscuit. There's definitely a story to tell.
@@jasonwiggins I’m not disputing any of that. He was magnificent and people loved him. I suppose a movie could focus on his dominance and ultimately his match race with Sir Barton. I mean at that point in his career there wasn’t much more he could do but he ended up beating the reigning “Triple Crown” winner in a match match. I guess the only negative as far as a movie goes is that he was never really an underdog and people like underdogs. Even in the Secretariat movie they changed it to make it seem like he saved Claiborne Farm from going under, but it was actually Riva Ridge who saved it. But you also make a good point in that they could bring up War Admiral too, who was an outstanding horse, had a great career and obviously had his own interesting match race with Seabiscuit. Hell it depends on how far you really want to go but MOW and Secretariat were even related via Fair Play and Bold Ruler.
@@Whoopdido777 Yes, every American Thoroughbred traces his or her roots back to Man O War. You would have to make the movie about MOW and Riddle. He was an interesting man. I have a question: Hall of Fame trainer Elliott Birch stated that steroids were introduced to Thoroughbred racing in the 60's and was rampant by the 70's. Was Secretariat on steroids? He and Sham had enlarged hearts which is a byproduct of steroid abuse. He also had infertility issues when he first went to stud and Sports Illustrated wrote an article about it and heavily implied that it was because of his steroid use. Thoughts?
@@jasonwiggins Boy, I don’t know. I think it’s hard to say. I hope he was clean, but I don’t think he was ever tested. He was quite a large horse and quite muscular as well. Most people know about his enlarged heart, which was Sham also had. The only thing I’d say about the heart is that steroid use can cause something called dilated cardiomyopathy, which causes the heart muscle to become weakened and enlarged and as a result the heart cannot pump enough blood to the rest of the body. So, let’s say he was on steroids and the steroids caused his enlarged heart.
Man O' War and Secretariat were heads above any other race horses that ever lived. There will probably never be another horse as great as these two were. Big, Strong, and fast. Would have been amazing to have seen them race each other. I will never compare the two, as in my mind they were kindered spirits and both beautiful animals. Interesting they were both nicknamed "Big Red" I bet if you had been able to see them side by side, they would have been almost identicle.
I never tire of seeing any video of this magnificent creation of G-d's! I'm sorry there aren't more, but who knew that the proper technology was just a few decades away? RIP champ! ❤
Why do they always call them freaks? They are not freaks, they are the epitome of perfection. You are glimpsing total perfection. We should be so honored. You only see them maybe once in a lifetime.
I believe that is true. My maternal grandparents knew MOW's owners. When my mom was young, they took her to see him at his stable at Faraway Farm in Lexington, KY. I have original photos in my mom's childhood trunk of Will Harbut, his groom holding him. She told me, the day she saw him, MOW was not feeling well, was antsy and had to be put back in his stall immediately after the photo was taken. MOW died about a month after Will Harbut did. He was a magnificent, beautiful horse. That chestnut color....One day, a trip to the KY Horse park in Lexington is in order to visit his grave.
I was totally amazed that he lived to be 30yrs old! U know he had the best care from the people who loved him! It's a shame racehorses are not treated the same today they are just used & thrown away! It's sad!
@horselover Besides that, Man O' War didn' t have the manicured track surfaces, starting gates (!), and digital timers that Secretariat did. It makes a big difference.
Mine to, I also read that book. What they put him through no one can ever match him. People do these fake comparisons, without taking in account all the weight that was add on him. I don't like the horse racing or show horse industry because a lot of animals are sbused.abused. most of the greats of today are his great great etc. grand horses.
He was the greatest, bar none, if I'm right his record for the 1 3/8th Larwence Realization on dirt still stands. Buckpasser and Dr.Fager beat it on turf.
Susan Dolan 1-5/8, though I don’t know if it still stands. I do know it has hardly been run that long in the last 50 years. Apparently, also, they stopped counting it for a while because the track racing changed direction the next year at Belmont.
At least there are some old photos and awful film footage….mostly in retirement. There’s no film footage of him running down the length of a stretch …..only short snippets. Why didn’t anyone film him running an entire race or at least the stretch run? I know it was 1920 but they had the camera technology. I always found that odd. He was supposed to be the greatest race horse of the time, but no one thought to film him running over a distance? Always found that strange. I’ll bet someone has film footage like that but it’s sitting, locked away in a storage box. There has to be more then what’s here on TH-cam?
How did they keep him in such great condition for thirty years? Modern stallions look fat and unhealthy within a few years of retirement. And the bone on him--those front legs are sculptural. The breed has been on a steep downhill trend since at least the 70s, overbred, inbred, unable to run more than a few races a year, on Lasix and other drugs, weak bones. THIS is what a racehorse was meant to be.
My top five greatest racehorse's of all time no cap and doesn't matter the sex or DNA. .#1.dr.fager .#2.zenyatta. #3.rachelalexander.#3mano'war. #.4.bigred. .#.5.ruffian
We are so very lucky to have these films of him.
.Man O' War has always been my favorite Thoroughbred since as a child I read Walter Farley's book/novel about him. I love your video tribute!
My wife of 50 years still has her book of Man O War.
I read Man O War too
I also loved Walter Farley’s book about Man O’ War recently bought the Kindle version 😬

The King to all racehorses. ❤ Beautiful and perfect specimen
Yes he was the greatest, He stood alone at the top. The legend of legends.

Man O' War was unbelievable..♥
Man O' War, Secretariat & Ruffian are the best horses who ever hit a track.
Julia you forgot Phar Lap. :)
And don't forget zenyatta!
Ruffian still breaks my heart
U also forgot Seabiscuit! My favorite little guy!
He was the greatest ever.
He takes my breath away.
A gift from God!
Yes yes he was a gift from God great gift
My favorite racehorse. Can't understand why they have never made a dramic movie about him, father of champions

There really ain't a more graceful and magnificent animal on this earth than the horse

This one, Secretariat, and Ruffian. Pretty much nothing else to touch them.
I ain't no cowboy but this was the greatest horse ever. 🇺🇸
He was fiery, but that Rock Sand blood cooled that crazy Hastings blood just enough to make him a champion.
Incredible Beauty Magnificent and Majestic a true gift. Capturing to the eye and the heart
Simply the best, and I am in awe.........🐎♥️🇨🇦
Great video. Love the footage, never seen some of them before!
Big Red died of a broken heart. He loved his groom who passed just before him.
it was a heart attack at age 30.
So sad.

Beautiful presentation, beautiful TB, and beautiful friendship 🐎❤❤❤😘
I'd love to see a movie about Man o' War's life.
MOW had the huge neck like Secretariat had.
Could be a chestnut trait. Both imo are the pinnacles of the sport
Man Of War , Pharlap and Secretariat are " The BIG 3 ." Horse's that can carry weight is hugely important.
@horselover Besides that, Man O' War didn' t have the manicured track surfaces, starting gates (!), and digital timers that Secretariat did. It makes a big difference.
BEAUTIFUL HORSE!!!!!
100 lengths. WHAT? That race must have looked like MOW ,was out galloping by himself.sound familiar.1973.God loves his big reds.
This is really spooky. I like it.
