A friend of mine told me that when Howard Rollins was incarcerated for DUI in Georgia he was a trustee and worked cleaning the law enforcement vehicles to have something to do. The officers said their cars had never been so clean and Mr. Rollins was so nice and you wouldn't know that he was an actor.

    • @wesbaumguardner8829

Lol, "He was so nice you couldn't tell that he was an actor." That's what actors do. They pretend to be who you want them to be, when they want to do so! Police want people to be compliant and completely subservient. That was exactly how Mr. Rollins acted. He was an actor, to his core.

@@marthamora6648 Hugh also had a drug problem. He had non Hodgkin's lymphoma when he was a teenager and became addicted to the pain meds. His dad Carroll got him onto the show to kindz help him get cleaned up, which is where he met his wife. She was a wardrobe assistant. He did get clean for a while, but when he found out that Heat wasn't being picked up for another season he relapsed. You can actually see in the final episodes he's always wearing sunglasses, even indoors, to hide his eyes.

Thanks for sharing Lamont. I really liked this guy too. His performance as Colehouse walker in Ragtime and as Captain Davenport on a soldier’s story are very memorable. In the heat of the night was also a great show because it had Carol O’Connor playing a liberal minded police chief, basically Archie Buncker’s exact opposite. Rollins did the part of Virgil Tibbs, which was originated by Sidney Poitier (Rip), justice. However, he had demons just like everyone else, and it’s sad that he died at the young age of 46. Wish he could have lived longer, but he will live on through his work.

Hello Lamont. I had the pleasure of meeting Howard Rollins. My brother in laws father worked for the studio that made In the heat of the night. So he knew Howard. Since you are from Southern Cal I'm sure you knew of Hollywood Park Race track. Me, my brother in law, his father, and Howard went there to the races one day in the late 80's. Never forget it, he was down to earth a real nice guy. Hated to see him get into the drugs and DUI problems. He was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor in Ragtime. Also don't know if you ever saw the Movie a Soldier's Story, if not you should try to check it out on Netflix. He turned in a great performance in it. Its seems ironic that you put this video out right after the death of the great Sidney Poitier the original Virgil Tibbs. As far as graves to visit. How about Nate King Cole and or his daughter Natalie Cole.

We lived in an apartment complex in Conyers Georgia, which is actually where the show was filmed, and one of the doors i knocked on was his. He said he stayed there while filming the show. I remember him opening the door with leather chaps and a black cowboy hat on! Yeah........lol...but he was a gay man so that must have either been his costume or his style! Either way he was such a nice guy and actually gave me his autograph on a piece of the script for the show! Its a cool little thing to happen to me as a young kid. Awesome guy and may he RIP!

In the Heat of the Night was also one of my Mom and Dad's favorite shows growing up as a kid. They would watch it while I was in the living room hanging out with them or playing with toys. The show sure does bring back childhood memories. Oh and here is another grave suggestion Lamont. Can you do a video over the grave of Enrique Camarena? He was the DEA agent in the mid-1980s who was kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered in Mexico while pursuing a cartel. That would be an interesting video. Other than that, good job on this video and keep up the good work Lamont!

Lamont, I watched the whole series of Roots in the 70,s. I was in my late teens then. Great series! Thanks for remembering Howard Rollins. I think cocaine made it,s biggest debut in the early seventies. Then Crack, because it was cheaper and more profit. Disco Era was fueled with it in studio 54.

Howard Rollins was an outstanding actor. May he Rest In Peace. If you ever head back to St. Charles Cemetery in Long Island, check out the graves of actors Ray Sharkey, Vincent Gardenia, and Maggie McNamara. It’s also the final resting place of Cesar Bonventre and a few other organized crime figures. Lots of interesting stories there!

A Soldiers Story was filmed near my home at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Just five minutes from Fort Smith, AR. I remember them filming it when I was a kid, my dad was stationed there, my mom, aunts and uncles were born there.

Howard Rollins was one hell of an actor! In the heat of the night is one of my top favorite shows! Watched every episode. Carrol O’connors son died of suicide, because he couldn’t quit the drugs. Pretty sad.
