I love this show and watch the reruns to this day. Love Carol in anything he did. Was saddened for him when his son committed suicide. Remember it well. Anything he ever played in , you just never knew what he would say or the very readable expression that would come up on his face.

Conversely human beings brought from Africa were captured and forcefully brought to America. They were only given freedom after the emancipation proclamation. Their work was hard and many injustices were inflicted upon them. Not all plantation owners were mean. Some valued their slaves and treated them with care and supported them. Some emancipated slaves stayed to work on the plantations as share coppers after they had the choice to leave. Others moved on to find work on their own and farmed or worked in the trades. I am ashamed of some periods of American history in terms of how African Americans , Native Americans , Chinese Japanese and Latinos were treated. It takes a long time to change things. But eventually diversity and inclusion would become the new culture. We have to continue to be sensitive to the needs of people who don't look like us or speak like us. Also equally sensitive to the needs of the elderly and disabled among us. I hope we can learn the value of becoming our best selves and able to see things through broader perspectives. We have to continue to find ways to find our way forward together .
Carrol O'Connors character on this show was the complete opposite of Archie Bunker,although Chief Gillespie was racist at first and didn't accept Virgil right away,but he changed over time.
How come the black men in this video are referred to African Americans in some way or another. You never once referred to the white men in this video as European Americans.
What ever became of the actress whose character's boyfriend murdered an old lady, kidnapped her grandson and Althea. Her name was Mariska something or other.
