Blacklist was a criminally underrated game. I still play it sometimes. Obviously, we all missed Michael Ironside, but what they did for the reboot worked. Getting to play Splinter Cell as a co-op story was fantastic too. They should make another one like this one and add an online feature similar to Hitman where people can create their own levels. Do that and lean more towards the Ghost and Panther modes of the game. If you haven't played it, download it and play it through. Totally worth it.
Agreed. Apparently part of the problem was that it had the same name as an older title so people were expecting a completely different game, but it was amazing!
It is insane that Spec Ops: The Line never got more love. It is one of the best 3rd person military shooters ever made. The ending alone is one of the best video game endings I've ever seen and a real big holy shit moment.
The best part of it was how you got to change classes whenever you got bored of your current one. And yet, each class felt distinctly different. This was the issue I had with Mass Effect Andromeda. You could change classes, but they all felt interchangeable.
@@TheOldMan-75 You are missing only some halfway-adorable romance scenes. If those are a big draw for you, try the game out (if you can do so for free.) If they aren't, save yourself the finite seconds you have on this Earth.
A friend suggested the game to me when i expressed disappointment with Skyrim (high expectations due to word of mouth but many admitted to me that it's an average game made better by mods). I was instantly pulled in to it in comparison to Skyrim. Poured in so so so many hours into it, the environment, the quests, story, i loved them all.
For me, it's one of the greatest games of all time. The Level Design Complimenting The Art Design of The space Station Talos I combined with the insane Replayability that the game offers just makes it even more of an underappreciated masterpiece. The Weapons and the Powers were also quite creatively curated and introduced.
I wouldn't say that. Ads were everywhere for that game leading up to its release, and even if the marketing was done better, I think it still would've flopped. The issue with Prey is that you can't really express the great parts about it in a quick surface level trailer. The game is obviously fantastic, but at a glance it's just going to be stuck looking like an incredibly generic shooter with aliens. That aside, the game was aggressively mid at launch if you factor in the bugs and absolutely HORRIFIC loading times, especially on console.
@@ssshjsssj5033 I thing that's one of many issues why the game didn't sell well. Immersive Simulators have always been that one particular genre of video games that the majority of people can't get into for some reason that I do not understand. Also, the trailers did show us and filled us in about the different powers, ways and tools that we would be having at our disposal for playing the game our way depending upon our play style and yes, as you said, people who got into it thinking it would be a satisfying first person shooter just set themselves up for a disappointment because the game is a far cry from being just a generic FPS title. Though I wish, this game would have had a sequel as the ending definitely hints towards it. The start of the game is slightly slow but exquisitely picks up the pace and the optimization was smooth as butter on PC but it was busted on consoles like you said until it was patched and worked upon.
Spec Ops: The Line was just a freaking completely unexpected experience that I still think about to this day after just the two back-to-back play throughs after it first released. Really needed a follow up.
Bro, Spec Ops is GREAT!!! That shit pulled me in and didn’t let go until the end. Some of the decisions you had to make were some of the most messed up shit and it progressively made me question my decisions. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE!!!
Days gone not being on this list, hell not being top 5 is criminal. Days gone was excellent and a sequel would slap. Still hoping it comes to PC and sony reconsiders it.
Beyond Good & Evil is in my top 10 favorite games of all time, an absolutely underrated game. Highly recommend checking out the 20th anniversary edition that just released if you haven’t played it.
Mirror's Edge deserved to be on the list. Short, but solid game with a unique colorful art style back when everything was buried in a sepia filter, and proved that first person view platforming can work.
Game was amazing. The art style, free running, sound track, all stellar. I will admit the combat was poor, but you weren't supposed to be a supersoldier, so it made some sense. Still have the yellow runners bag I got for pre-ordering.
@@thedarkemissary It wasn't a sequel, but no, Mirror's Edge got cult status, it didn't sell well. The reboot happened because Dice was passionate and their pitch for an open world was ticking the right boxes at EA. I personally think Catalyst is only slightly better than the original in some areas, but better than a masterpiece is high praise 😅
If you go into Spec Ops: The Line knowing it's NOT a COD clone you will find a gem of a game. The story is Hollywood A Game quality. Amazing story, better than ok game.
I love Kingdoms of Amalur. It's one of my favorite games of all time. I bought the remaster as soon as it released on Steam. Glad to see other people appreciate it as well.
Yeah man With Tango Gameworks closed we'll never be able to get anything close to Evil Within in the near future so atleast those 2 games deserve to be mentioned.
I think the problem with Immortals of Aveum is it's basically a first person shooter, and I don't know, for me the fantasy of playing a mage with style is being able to see all the gestures, flapping robes and hair, the sparks and all effects around, selling the magnitude of their power. And no imagery I watch about this game shows me that to be honest.
It gets more flashy the further you get in the game and the more you unlock. You get actual spells outside of your "guns." Playing through it rn. Nothing great but still decent turn off your brain fun.
The problem is pretty much the entire game with the exception of the graphic , it's on par with other garbage games like saints row reboot, suicide squad, forspoken, redfall so on, absolutely atrocious story and characters i wanted to forget it existed as fast as possible
@@Bhavesh_verma Not sure if masterpiece is the right word, but it was definitely very well done. The unlockable node system for the behavior tree on the AI was very brilliant. The behind the scenes tricks the devs used to get it to appear to be super smart was very sly.

Its so tragic that its been over 10 years since a splinter cell game. Use to be one of the best video games out. That whole era of good ass tom clancy games is gone and its so sad. Ghost recon future soldier and all the ones before it were great games too.
@@halfkoreanhalfamazing Agreed, aside from Charlie's stupid missions and 2 points in the game where you are forced to be detected, Blacklist is everything I wanted from a modern entry in the franchise. It's got non-lethal options, all the old gadgets plus the cool new ones from Conviction, tons and tons of animations for takedowns, shootable lights, body carrying/hiding, lots of customisation to play how you want, a really well written political espionage story with a fantastic villain, and of course, perfectionist difficulty 😌
The franchise was actually pretty successful. It got 6 games (4 mainline, 2 spin offs) and an anime. That's pretty good. It just didn't land in the states.
I played Beyond Good & Evil in 2006. This game was way ahead of its time. You could capture photos of creatures and locations, and participate in speed boat races as minigames. It was a great adventurous game!
Amalur didnt cause the studio to fail, it was made by a third party. 38 Studios was working on an mmo set in the amalur universe (but like centuries apart). The mmo was in development first, amalur was an attempt to generate revenue as they kept working. The money spent on the mmo is what caused all the problems.
* a brilliant blend i got into Splinter Cell because of Conviction and i still love that game but i recognize it's an action game first and foremost and a stealth game second. i could never get into the other ones, but Blacklist did a superb job of bridging that gap between the two gameplay styles. Of course we missed Rasczak's voice but the man was going through cancer at the time. i also think that Conviction had a much better story than Blacklist, but Blacklist is by far the better game.
I'd argue that Double Agent (Ps2 version) had tons of Chaos Theory DNA and that Blacklist by virtue of borrowing from DA had that Chaos Theory element too. Blacklist is so much game too, people often overlook just how much bloody content you got from that 1 game, eventhough the DLC was cancelled. Do NOT regret that Collector's Edition pre-order, so good.
I like Pandora Tomorrows story more but overall the Blacklist gameplay was so damn good that it probably is the second best one. All of the games offer something, kind of like how the Hitman series went along.
Splinter cell blacklist is the closest thing we have to a john wick game in terms of combat. The fluid movement, takedowns, executions via the mark and execute function is just sooooo cool and satisfying. Its a shame this didnt take off more. So underrated.
I enjoyed Kingdoms of Amalur, there were however far too many side quests it felt like nobody in the world did anything for themselves and stood around hoping some adventurer would wander by. Spec Ops: The Line was great it was easily one of the best games I played, I liked Alpha Protocol too.
I think it's been mentioned a few times on this channel on "underrated/overlooked gems" type videos, so I guess they're just covering games they haven't talked about before... But I agree, Mad Max was seriously good fun. Even though it doesn't do anything revolutionary, and follows the standard open-world gameplay loop, somehow it was just addictive as hell and very atmospheric.
1. Immortals of Aveum 2. Beyond good and evil 3. Alien: Isolation 4. A 5. Splinter Cell 6. Guardians of The Galaxy 7. Alan Wake 8. Alpha Protocol 9. Kingdom of Amalur 10. Okami Okami should be #1 on this list. It was phenomenal.
Outriders comes to mind. One of my favorite looter shooters of all time. One of the few games I actively grinded in and enjoyed it. Had a couple of game breaking bugs early on that tarnished its reputation, but I think its a massively underrated game. Really hope they make a sequel.
To me, there was too much repetiton. It became boring fairly quickly to me, I didn't have the feeling of making actual progress, because it took FOREVER to level up the last few ascension- and apocalypse tiers. Changes to loot drops also jsut made it worse for me. Played it for quite a long time, but ultimately just started yawning after playing one round.. so I quit. Also, game was unplayable for me on PS4, PS5 didn't really improve that. On PC, it was a lot of fun, until it became too repetitve for me.
My friends quit playing 3 weeks in. They tend to play games for a week and switch to another one (they're never even good) so I don't even play with my friends anymore lol. Mfs never hit 20 hours in anything
Blacklist is the only Splinter’s Cell game I have ever played. It was a rough start because the stealth mechanics were unforgiving. Repeated failures led to me getting better eventually, and when I beat the game for the first time, I felt I was ready to be a special agent in real life…you know, plotting a stealth route, where to hide and when to body roll while just walking around 😂. I thought it was the greatest stealth game and didn’t know why there was no follow up…it remains to be one of the few games I played through multiple times because I really enjoy the experience.
Guardians of the Galaxy is such a fun game. Also, Kingdoms of Amalur is one amazing game. Over 100hrs first playthrough, not a game for impatient gamers. It's a game you live in and simply enjoy. Very good list.
Jade Empire could have also made this list. It was such a good game, real time combat rpg with multiple fighting styles and a morality and romance system on par with fable. I was always so angry that it never got a sequel
I have to assume "Psi-ops: the mindgate conspiracy" didn't sell well because it never got a sequel, and that's a real shame. Psi-ops made much better use of psychic powers and physics than "control" and Psi-ops came out on the original xbox. The physics were amazing, and you could freaking tk surf man! You could hurl yourself at super speed all over the map, and that's on top of the other powers and abilities you got. Pyrokinesis, mind control, astral projection, you got way better guns, you could drive. it was awesome.
Gotta sell the first one to get a sequel. Doubt that has anything to do with it. I really liked it though because of everything you just mentioned. Shame really, most of these games were awesome! Especially Alpha Protocol!!
The Sabateur, Sleeping Dogs and Brutal Legend. Did Battle for Middle Earth II not sell well because that game was great. Definitely deserved a follow up. That was the last rts game I ever played and that was decades ago smh.
Fun fact about sleeping dogs (I fell down a google rabbit hole) sleeping dogs originated as a sequel to true crime NYC but when that IP went dormant after true crime NYC (which also deserves to be be on this list) underperformed it was later revived by a new dev and became sleeping dogs.
I remember getting Alan Wake for $10 on a Steam sale not too long after it came out. I really enjoyed it and never heard anyone talk about it. Same thing happened with Mass Effect 1.
I really want another Spec Ops, but remember an interview where the main game director (I forget the position title, idc lol) said something along the *lines* of “I’d rather drag my balls through a trail of broken glass than attempt another game”, lmfao.
The issue with Kingdom of Amalur was that it released alongside Mass Effect 3(well, a couple weeks b4) and a new unheard of rpg that got next to no marketing could never compete with the highly anticipated release of the finale of the the most popular RPG series of the era. Mass Effect 3 got all the coverage and dominated commercials at the time. Hell, I remember not even knowing about it until months after release.
People do want new and original IP. They just don't want it to come out at the same time as their anticipated sequels, remakes, reboots, or remasters. The problem might be that the amount of people looking for a "new" or novel experience just isn't a large enough demographic to support it.
Actually, the issue is that when new ip's come out, they have zero creativity that games from years ago had. This is due to multiplatform development. Yes, it's nice to have the game on all systems, but creating a game for 3 systems is the same as making the games 3 separate times all at the same time. So, to make this possible, you have to give up on what made older games good in order to deliver that experience. All the remastered games were originally games that came out on one system. That means teams could master how to create games for that one system and focus more time on creativity in the games. Like naughty dogs, for example, pretty much every game they released has been a top game as they only had to make the games for Playstation only.
Worst thing a publisher can do with a brand new IP is release it in the run up to Christmas, when it's going to have to compete with all the established AAA franchises that drop at the same time... Put it out during the quieter part of the year and it might actually get noticed and played. I've lost count of the times good games got completely ignored because they came out the same week, or even the same day as some big AAA blockbuster. If they'd just delayed the launch by 6 months it might have been a big hit.
First, wow, I’m actually shocked that Alien Isolation “undersold” in any context. Second, Sleeping Dogs definitely could have taken someone’s place on this list. Super underrated and definitely deserved a sequel.
Before watching I'ma say sleeping dogs. That game was amazing. A way better open world crime game than any GTA game in my opinion. Sadly it didn't sell super well.
I can't say for the more recent titles, but in the late noughties/early 10s, I played Spec Ops and Splinter Cell etc... via game rental companies. Sure, the disc was still purchased by companies to rent out. But when some single players didn't have replay value, there was no incentive to buy.
I loved Amalur on the release, I think what really made it "hidden" and hindered it's success was it's release date: Skyrim came out on 11 of november of 2011 and Amalur came out at 7 of february of 2012, the Skyrim dominance at this point was set in stone.
Alpha Protocol needs a Sequel That was the system that needed to be kept and improved not abandoned. There was and is nothing like this stealth genre. totally unique. Hope people play and push this game for xbox and obsidian to have another look.
Games like Alpha Protocol are 100% up my alley and I remember enjoying it but also being very upset the whole time I played it. I wanted the game to be good and show what the genre could do but it was a clunky mess that precluded its goal.
Splinter Cell Blacklist was one of my favorite games back in the day, the fact that you could play it with a friend too was just awsome.... Suprised to hear the buys did not meet expectations.
I'm one of those people who didn't really appreciate Blacklist or Spec Ops until it was too late, but will loudly sing their praises today. Just absolutely spectacular games that do exactly what they set out to do and then some.
At least Beyond Good and Evil is still somewhat getting recognition from Ubisoft despite not selling that well originally, the BG&E remaster is coming out later this month on June 25
Does it? I'm currently playing it for the first time because I've heard so many good things about it, but jmo it's not a very good game. Like, it's alright, but there's nothing great about it. Its clearly made for kids. I don't understand why people love it so much. Is it just nostalgia from playing it when you were a kid? The documenting species with your camera is a cool feature, but the world is lame, the story is lame, the characters are lame, the combat is lame, the level design is lame...
@_walruseater not everything, but sure, opinions on games are. But I'm genuinely asking for anyone to explain why that game is so highly regarded, or explain why they disagree with the opinions I gave. "To each their own" doesn't explain anything. Please try to explain it to me, I'm genuinely curious. I'm currently more than halfway through the game and having a hard time taking it seriously. But determined to finish it. I don't know, maybe you like the "stealth" sections where you sneak up on what are supposed to be badass super soldiers and kick them in the butt so they start helplessly hopping around until you kick them against sending them flying up to the ceiling where they explode 🤷♂️
"Spec Ops. the line" Was delisted from Steam. All because 2k did not want to pay right for a single tiny musical piece on the main menu. One of the most unique games out there can't be bought, because for 2K saving a bit of money is more important than preserving a piece or art.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Titanfall 2 immediately come to mind for me. Amazing games that didn’t sell well at all, but will live on and eventually find their audiences years later.
Okami is one of the best experiencies I have ever had as a gamer. The story, the art style, the gameplay, the characters, everything is incredible and clearly done with much love involved. Even though I would like a sequel, I guess it's better left alone as the masterpiece that it is.

Prey from 2017 is one of the most underrated video games of all time. Don't think it met sales expectations
Yup and we're never getting a sequel 😭😭
Agreed. Apparently part of the problem was that it had the same name as an older title so people were expecting a completely different game, but it was amazing!
I loved Prey but it was too long for its own good. I eventually got bored because it wouldn't end lol

Chris Pratt was cheesy enough to be Star-Lord. The voice actor in the game is 100% mature cheddar 😅
Thanks for reminding me i bought it on steam and never played it yet.
It is insane that Spec Ops: The Line never got more love. It is one of the best 3rd person military shooters ever made. The ending alone is one of the best video game endings I've ever seen and a real big holy shit moment.
Kingdoms of Amalur was really a fun gem. Played it years after its release and still had a blast for like 100 hours.
The best part of it was how you got to change classes whenever you got bored of your current one. And yet, each class felt distinctly different. This was the issue I had with Mass Effect Andromeda. You could change classes, but they all felt interchangeable.

@@LadyBern Yeah, Bethesda doesn't make games. They make big maps and mod tools.
#1 is Prey 2017. Easily the most underrated game of all time. Marketing team did an awful job, one of the greatest games of all time sold just a few.
saw this comment before I even watched the video and I completely agree.
Or maybe you’re just extremely biased.. the game was okay
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus. I will stand by this game as being underrated and underappreciated (based on sales).

@@thedarkemissary It wasn't a sequel, but no, Mirror's Edge got cult status, it didn't sell well. Some of my personal Game of the Years are on this list:
2012 Spec Ops: The Line
2021 Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
I think the problem with Immortals of Aveum is it's basically a first person shooter, and I don't know, for me the fantasy of playing a mage with style is being able to see all the gestures, flapping robes and hair, the sparks and all effects around, selling the magnitude of their power. And no imagery I watch about this game shows me that to be honest.
It gets more flashy the further you get in the game and the more you unlock. You get actual spells outside of your "guns." Playing through it rn. Nothing great but still decent turn off your brain fun.
@@ModestPavement Cool, I guess I'll give it a try some day.

Right. Project Copernicus. Amalur was like the only bright spot in that massive taxpayer money sink.
Mad Max and Sunset Overdrive were the first 2 on my mind loved them both so much wish they did well enough for sequels
Blacklist was a weird blend of Conviction and Double Agent that made an incredible Splinter Cell game that is the best one next to Chaos Theory.
* a brilliant blend
i got into Splinter Cell because of Conviction and i still love that game but i recognize it's an action game first and foremost and a stealth game second.
i could never get into the other ones, but Blacklist did a superb job of bridging that gap between the two gameplay styles.

Being online only and the inability to pause the game didnt help matters.

Especially when reviews come out and say the new IP is not as good as .
that aveum game looks rad but it reeks of sbi so its a hard pass
@@Jbig1430huh what do you know
Exclusivity does have its perks.
Alpha Protocol was such a step in the right direction for a brand new IP
One that immediatly comes to mind for me is the Digital Devil Saga duology. Fantastic little JRPG's back on the PS2, but sadly sold quite poorly.

I can't say for the more recent titles, but in the late noughties/early 10s, I played Spec Ops and Splinter Cell etc... via game rental companies. Sure, the disc was still purchased by companies to rent out. But when some single players didn't have replay value, there was no incentive to buy.
I never even knew Alan Wake was underperforming. I loved it as soon as I started it and it’s still one of my top 5 games of all time.
Saw the title and already knew Spec Ops was incoming.
Game is a tragedy being that good while failing so hard.
I loved Amalur on the release, I think what really made it "hidden" and hindered it's success was it's release date: Skyrim came out on 11 of november of 2011 and Amalur came out at 7 of february of 2012, the Skyrim dominance at this point was set in stone.
Alpha Protocol needs a Sequel
That was the system that needed to be kept and improved not abandoned. There was and is nothing like this stealth genre. totally unique.

Games like Alpha Protocol are 100% up my alley and I remember enjoying it but also being very upset the whole time I played it. I wanted the game to be good and show what the genre could do but it was a clunky mess that precluded its goal.

At least Beyond Good and Evil is still somewhat getting recognition from Ubisoft despite not selling that well originally, the BG&E remaster is coming out later this month on June 25
Camera angles were it's problem.
Everything is subjective
Immortal Of Aveum shows why big budget new IP is dead... simply way too risky...
New ip part was good, i was excited to play but story was too bad. New ips require great ideas and implementation
Big budget means higher expectations.
"Spec Ops. the line" Was delisted from Steam. All because 2k did not want to pay right for a single tiny musical piece on the main menu.
One of the most unique games out there can't be bought, because for 2K saving a bit of money is more important than preserving a piece or art.
Splinter cell blacklist multiplayer was THE SHIT.
Also ghost recon future soldier was lit
These are probably a couple of the last good games ubisoft ever made
The most underrated games to me are The Secret of Evermore and The Suffering.
Never heard of either. Hm.
Suffering was brutally awesome
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Titanfall 2 immediately come to mind for me. Amazing games that didn’t sell well at all, but will live on and eventually find their audiences years later.
Am I the only one thinking conviction was the best splinter cell?
Great gameplay and story, but it alienated fans by forcing action over stealth.
Blacklist improved very much on the gameplay front.
I feel like bullet storm belongs to this list.
Okami is one of the best experiencies I have ever had as a gamer. The story, the art style, the gameplay, the characters, everything is incredible and clearly done with much love involved. Even though I would like a sequel, I guess it's better left alone as the masterpiece that it is.
Oddworld soulstorm was great, sadly not many people know about this series its a shame that the game hasnt been bought a lot, it has quality graphics. Im kinda worried on what might happen to oddworld inhabitants
I forgot about Oddworld: Soulstorm until you had mentioned it. That is a game that has been on my list to buy, but always forgot about it....Thanks for the reminder!!
