    I have worked as an arborist assending trees but I'm new to these belay devices and always try to be open-minded to new ideas but to always test them out safely. Really enjoyed this video and appreciate the Intel! Great video!

    Very slick. My head is starting to hurt as there are new options to ascend/ descend being shown almost everyday. This is one of the best I’ve seen. I’ve been using a figure 8 but I just ordered a Rock Exotica mini 8 and a figure 9. I’ll see which of these works best for me. I also use hollow block when descending. Keep up the great work!

    Thanks for the info. I'm currently using the Mad Rock (also with an autoblock) but I'm researching all options. 👍🏼

    Fixing to buy all the gear I need. Been hunting with lock on stands all year. Fixing to give this saddle stuff a try and I’m either going to one stick, or use another method. But either way, I want to repel down. This stuff is so badass to me 😂

    Great idea using the belay device as a tender for your hitch. If someone chose to do it this way might be a little cheaper to not get a guide atc since you not using it in guide mode. I use my guide atc with two carabiners. One for guide mode and one for rappel. I think you could make a lighter slack tender out of a cord and rappel ring or micro pulley with your hitch and auto block

    I don’t rappel but I use my tether to climb down the sticks after, may give this a try as it can be adjusted up or down

    Have you looked at the Austrialpin Fish. I am using 8mm rope, stopped using my madrock and started using the Fish from Austrialpin. Austrialpin should be a familiar name as they make the buckle systems used on most saddles. The fish is a great product and the company has a great military discount.

    Okay, I'm going to give this a try, but I'm going with 9mm Canyon Elite to stay in spec with the ATC. I tried a Mammut Smart 2.0 first when everyone was out of MR Safeguards. I couldn't get it to stop slipping without having my autoblock pulling against it. That made turning to my left difficult, but worse still, turning to my right would loosen the autoblock and the MS 2.0 would slip. I tried both their carabiner and another one with the same results. It also made adjusting my tether difficult. I think this is the solution I've been looking for. I almost bought a Madrock until I watched your video on why you switched. Glad I had the foresight to do that!
    Love your videos, but you make my feet hurt just watching you climb wearing those crocs!

      @@PrivilegedBowhunter Well, that didn't go well. I used everything you did except for my rope. What I learned was that made a huge difference. The thin prusik cord gripped the rope so well it was almost impossible to break. It made rappelling down a PITA to say the least. Even while ascending, if I had to adjust downward to reach my stick, I had a devil of a time breaking the weighted hitch. I don't think a heavier cord would fit through the loop on my ATC. I finally gave up and ordered a Madrock Safeguard. I added a Cornell hitch above the Safeguard, which I tend with a small carabiner and some paracord for the rappel down. Now I don't have to fiddle with the autoblock as I'm ascending and get zero slippage as I reach down for my one-stick. It feels much safer than the Mammut Smart 2.0, and there is much less fiddle factor than the ATC and autoblock. Like your ATC setup, once I hook up at the base of the tree until I am back on the ground, I never have to switch anything.
      I wish your way would have worked for me, but we all have to do what feels safe and works for our situations. I have to adapt due to age (70), being short for my width, and a having a prosthetic right knee, which means I need a short step from the bottom rung of my aider (left foot) to the second rung with my right. My leg just won't bend enough anymore. Being very right handed, means I need the stick to my left. I tried it the other way with less than satisfactory results. On the other hand, I'm too damn stubborn to give up (confirmed so by my wife of 51 years). 🙄
      I still think you put out some of the best videos available for those of us crazy enough to hang from trees!

    This along with your original ATC vs Madrock vid are very well made and very informative. I have been sport rappelling and rock climbing and have some formal vertical rescue training over the course of several decades and have recently started to get into some recreational tree climbing. I have used ATCs a lot over the years and have found them to be very versatile and handy. Like you, I have experimented a number of ways to use them for ascending as well as rappelling and came to the same conclusion as you that there were just too many steps and too much manipulation and transitions that could lead to a bad mistake. I have used Gri Gri and they work fine. but an ATC is a lot lighter , quieter and no moving parts, no mechanical cams and IMHO simplicity is usually a good thing. The question I have for you is have you experienced your rappel line wearing into your Schwabisch rope? Synthetic rope rubbing on each other can generate a lot of heat and wear to the point of a prolonged high speed descent (ie an out of control fall) they can cut each other. Granted, rappelling under a controlled and reasonable manner 12-15 ft out of a tree stand shouldn't cause any trouble but do you see where I am going with this? In running the rappel line through the same carabiner as the hitch rope, have you noticed any rubbing or wear on either rope or are they not in contact with each other (other that the hitch it'self of course) in actual practice?

    • @pathfinder5804
      @pathfinder5804 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve been playing with many versions of this type of thing and yes I’ve noticed heat for sure but it is short distance and you can control descent easily to mitigate that effect. I use climbing sticks most of the time and haven’t done much one sticking and I still repel out as it’s just quicker and safer I believe. When I was an arborist we used only friction knots to repel and they always seemed to get real hot that’s why in training we emphasized steady repels not zipping down. It’s hard though as it’s just more fun to zip down quick!

      I haven’t experienced any wear in my ropes and I have hundreds of climbs/repels on them. I’m not burning down the rope like Batman at the end of the hunt though.

    Andre let me start off by saying i love the content. My question is this still your go to setup with the DMM Pivot? I want to make the transition to a One Stick climbing setup and I am leaning towards a non-mechanical rappel device. Just curious if you have any additional information since this video was posted. Thank up.

    Once assembled can the setup just be left on the rope so as not to have to re tie it before every hunt?

  • @QuietLifeintheForest

    As a personal tree climber and former rock climber who now saddle hunts, this is pretty good, but the prusik cord going through the eye of the ATC is it going to prevent it from fully engaging in the correct angle.
    It seems like you may have one of the ATC's with a pivoting guide loop, that may mitigate this issue, but for some people who do not have the correct ATC that could pose serious problems

    Once up in the tree what do you do with the 4o’ of road below you? Let it hang or coil up and hang on your hip?

  • @800Revmod
    @800Revmod 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Only issue I see is if you went around branches going up the tree, you will need to pull the ATC and accessory cord (schwabisch) off the rope in order to pull your rope down.
