LIsten to some of the classic 90's In Flames such as Moonshield, Dead Eternity, Jotun, Behind Space or Gyroscope.

They've been around since 93. They're self titled demo was released in 93", before mikael switched places with Anders for dark tranquility.

They started mixing up their sound ALOT after whoracle, "Episode 666" and "The Jester race" are tunes worth checking out from their older albums to get a certain feel of their old sound.
"Come Clarity" has some kick ass tunes for being among their newer releases though, "Leeches" "Pacing deaths trail" or "Crawling through knives" are among their best work imo.

Yeah, people act like they started selling out with some of the tracks on Colony and Clayman. But Reroute to remain and Soundtrack to your escape also have some super heavy death metal cuts in there as do newer releases. Imo they’ve stayed plenty true to their roots while simultaneously being able to make a good living playing a type of music that’s not for everybody.

If you want to hear some of the more heavier stuff from In Flames, I recommend Worlds Within the Margins from the album Whoracle and Colony from the 1999 album.
As the years progressed, the sound of In Flames has changed a lot. The heavy stuff is in the early days and the band went gradually more mainstream with each new album.

Yeah, their 90's stuff is definitely better. They were kind of pioneers of melodic death metal along with At The Gates and such. In my opinion Whoracle is the greatest concept album ever made.

In my opinion Colony and Clayman are the best In Flames albums. Not by far, others like Whoracle, The Jester Race and Reroute to Remain are great too. But I think those albums are masterclass melodic death metal.

I personally got into metal through the album Clayman when i borrowed my friends ipod in 2007, but after some time listening to more metal and In Flames i found that i like more of the older albums sound. My favorite album is The Jester Race and favorite song from that album is Dead God in Me. I think you will find out that the sound you were expecting is more in line with that album and other of the older albums. Nice review though

They are phenomenal live as well, saw them twice last year, seeing them again this year when they tour with Megadeath, Lamb of God and Trivium! Colony was the better album but I really enjoyed Sounds of a Playground fading where I know a lot of people did not.

I've heard this band's name for years but never heard their music before. I think I'll pass on them. To each their own, but this is horrible (in my opinion of course).

I am pretty sure an old room mate had a few of their early albums, and I think they are a helluva lot heavier on the early stuff..
