    I'd give it a 4/5 I was shocked, but I enjoyed it...Listened to it twice through. I haven't listened to an In Flames record in years...but I dug this morning's workout to it.

    A "return to form" is something people started spouting out, and they never really claimed it was going to be purely 1 era of inflames instead you get areally impressive mix of ALL inflames and for people who were with them from the start its an amazing album.

    It’s a good album. I respect the vocals as a vocal guy, Anders did get a vocal coach for this album. Dekay kills it and he needs more records behind him. ❤

    I wouldn’t say it’s a return to the old but a fantastic mix of ALL of In Flames. The 2 sounds you pointed out as soft are actually 2 of my favorites. I’ve been a fan since 2000 or “Clay man” I absolutely love this album as a whole but I agree “in the dark” is my #1 for this album 💯

    I love Anders' clean vocals, so I'm digging the album a lot. I think his voice and style is more unique than what we've heard dominate in the melodeath/metalcore genres, probably to exhaustion. I actually don't dislike some of their more recent records, but I do appreciate the return of some of their core sound. Overall, feels like a great blend of the old and new. I do agree about the solos, it leaves you wanting more.

      I also have always loved Anders' cleans, not so much on the last 4 albums, but he definitely has one of the most unique styles. There is always a tinge of desperation to both his screams and cleans.
      Their Down, Wicked, and No Good EP is a good showcasing of just how good/unique his cleans really are!

    I loved the album. Has been on repeat for me all day.
    I think they have found the right balance between their alt metal style with their old school melodeath sound. It wasn't executed well in the last few albums, but this one just feels right and I'm very happy with it!

    Loved In Flames since their first albums and through all their evolutions. This release indeed is a fantastic blend of the distinctive melodic aggression of the older albums with the alternative/groove influences of their newer work. Such a tricky balance but they pull it off naturally on this album. Such a powerful release. So glad to see these guys continuing to dominate

    When it comes to bands like In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, and At the Gates, I just can't get that same feeling from their music as I did in the late '90s and early 2000s. I can't grasp if its me getting older and my taste is different or the music. With that said I do still jam to albums like The Jester race and Colony.

    I agree with D.D but I think it’s a great album overall that really really really should have ended with the song “Become One” that is only a bonus track on the delux addition of Foregone, song rips! Why didn’t they include it in the standard version?!?!?
    As a fan of their earlier records I like the blend of old and new, because if you only want the old stuff then you can just listen to Amon Amarth or Night in Gales or a bunch of other bands. This album demonstrates their continuing uniqueness

    I've only listened to the singles so far, but this review is exactly how I've felt about every in flames song I've heard since reroute. I've also never made it through a whole album since reroute. Jester Script Transfigured came up on random the other day, man it was just so good. On a related note, the Halo Effect did nothing for me either, which I guess clears up the notion that in flames went downhill when Jesper left.

  • @caseyk.479
    @caseyk.479 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have listened to mainly hard rock for the past couple of years, but then my friend showed me slipknot, which gave me an appreciation for harsh vocals, and then I found melodic death metal and it is my new favorite genre, so as someone who is used to clean vocals but also likes harsh vocals I love almost every song in this album, but my favorite is probably still reroute to remain.

    I go 4/5. This review helps me dig even more what I enjoy about the album. Disagree on the clean vocals (better than the kids) but I see them as a contract to play ballads. Congrats on the upright review. The comments about their ´´returning to the roots´´ are sober here. In case you check IF channels be prepared for a timetravel on behalf of the fans.

  • @Tompeteux
    @Tompeteux ปีที่แล้ว +8

    “Back to the roots” only applies here if you think their “roots” lie in their 2006-2008 era,cause the best parts of this album are more reminiscent of Come Clarity/Sense Of Purpose than they are Whoracle/Colony.
    They’re kinda following Metallica‘s footsteps in that they’ve put out so much horrendous shit in the last decade that a mildly heavier album can hide its shortcomings simply by being mediocre instead or outright awful. Guess they are entering their Death Magnetic/Hardwired phase.

As i always say...respect the work of the band...not just sticking to whats just the past. Theres a reason why they are called albums. Its the right of the artist to pursue different corners within the genre. Kudos Gellotte.

    Well I mean no offence Daniel, but I think your rating would be a little bit higher had you listened to the albums from 2006 to 2019.
    Their sound diverged so much from their original sound that they were mostly a different band. Hence your low rating, 3 skulls isn't bad though

    In Flames is my all time favorite band but since Jesper left the band it feels like they can’t make Melodic Death Metal anymore. Now in this era (2011 onwards) this album is the closest to classic In Flames sound, a good record not mind blowing but nice to hear it, of course incomparable to gems like Jester Race or Colony. But hey anything is better than “battles” XD.
    Pd: listen to “Embody the Invisible”! Jesus, what a beast of song

    Interesting review with valid criticisms. But as far as the cleans on this record... I respectfully disagree. They are emotional, well produced, multilayered, memorable, and well sung. And im not really into those types of choruses in my metal tastes. However I have been listening to In Flames since the mid 90s. Seen them through all the highs and lows. Personally, I really appreciate them making the effort to create something of this quality. That's even if it's not my favorite album of theirs. I'm pretty happy for them to continue doing what they do. And maybe you and others don't dig the clean stuff here, but I've unintentionally came back to spinning the album on repeat all damn day, and impressed at how much I'm enjoying all of it.

    It's pretty subjective. Most people got on a hate wagon because of the clean vocals - especially on the Siren's Charms, which is one of the most hated albums, yet one of my favorites. And I am not someone who listens exclusively to light metal genres, quite the oposite in fact (I'm more od a death/black type of a guy). So I think In Flames followed a natural progression of their sound, and managed to capture the essence of this journey from the melodic death metal we all love (with tunes such as State of Slow Decay, and Make Your Maker) to clean and well done ballads (such as Pure Light of Mind) really well. Overall, a great release.

    Havent gotten the reps in yet so i can form a final opinion, but i certainly like this album a lot more than the previous 3. It's certainly not their best work overall, but it's kinda as good as i would hope for a band at this point of their career. The Halo Effect album was, to me, vastly better overall, without any weak or boring songs in it (and closer to the old In Flames/Gothenburg sound, which, to be fair, was Jesper's doing as was the band itself).

    Great review, I pretty much agree with everything you said. Funny that you landed at exactly the same spot as AMG with a similar reasoning ;). I agree that Anders’ cleans are a big weakness for the band. They are not aggressively bad or anything, just bland and uninteresting. I don’t understand why they rely on them so much. And yes, I wanted more Metal riffing too since the small bits that are there are so excellent. Overall, I would give it a 2.5 because while this contains the best songs they wrote in a long, long time, there are not enough of them and the others are simply meh. The pacing of the record is also weird, it completely sags at the end and leaves you with a bad impression. The bonus track on the deluxe edition is quite good though, so that helps.

    As someone who enjoys almost every era of In Flames. They are literally my 2nd favorite band. I found this album to be absolutely perfect for me cause it is pretty much the perfect mix of all eras. Does fall short in some places but overall I absolutely loved the record.

    Hard agree on the clean vocals. Was listening to this album last night, and they just don't sit right, they ride on top of the music.

    4/5 or 4.5/5 would be more accurate, its been ages since a single album has many tracks that are unique and so beautiful placed together molodically

    When comparing this album to the inevitable comparison this year, namely The Halo Effect, I can't help but feel a telling difference. Where ths songs on The Halo Effect, and the entire band in fact, seems to come from a sense of true passion and nostalgia - while the songs on Foregone seems to come from a place of necessity and insecurity. They are both really good musically, don't get me wrong, but Foregone feels more... hollow?

    Yeah those auto tune vocals hurts it. Anders has great clean vocals and mixes well with his gutterals, My Sweet Shadow and Crawl Through Knives are great examples.

    This album is about the best current day In Flames can do. Half killer, half filler. There’s 5 or 6 songs here (basically the singles) that are great, and the rest I could never listen to again and be completely happy. I mean, still the best since Come Clarity, but hardly a classic or a “return to form.” 3/5 is what I’d give it.
    And it is worth saying, which was touched on briefly, but the drumming is very good. Tanner Wayne is a great find, I just dig his fills and groove.

    A "return to form" hasn't happened since their rather sudden decline with "Reroute to Remain" to be honest. I do like some of the heaviness popping up in the DECEIVING first singles, but in the end, they are indeed deceiving since there is still a lot of godawful "Battles" style in those other songs.
