In Flames are one of the bands responsible for the "Gothenburg sound" in the mid 90s, borrowing from traditional heavy metal, particularly NWBHM with highly melodic and harmonized guitar riffs and solos but downtuning the guitars and adding the heaviness of death metal. I was fortunate to see In Flames as a young teen in 1999 in LA when they released Clayman, their last good album before they changed their style. Great vibes, crowd interaction and performance. Not a bunch of people standing with their smartphones.
I saw them a few years later open up for Slayer and it was a different band unfortunately. That being said, The Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony albums are musical treasures that to this day remind me of a very fun time of my metalhood as a teen and young adult. My buddy and I still jam on a few of their tunes at my studio. But yeah, give Colony a full listen because there's not a bad/boring song on there. The Jester Race is my go-to on rainy days.

Oh man I would so much wish to hear In Flames for the first time again. My first touch was straight on Colony->Clayman->Whoracle. Still brings huge chills, especially Colony transitions. PHEW!

Thank god they finally put out a comeback album (Foregone) this past year and returned to their classic melodeath sound. 2002-2022 we pretty disappointing years for old school In Flames fans…. Im glad they finally went back to their original sound, even if it took 20 years.

The song Trigger by In Flames off the same album as Clouds Connected called Reroute to Remain is a must listen. A banger and a half.

  • @arhus12

Cloud Connected was literally the song that got me into proper metal, the heaviest I went before that was Metallica. And then In Flames became my favourite band and stayed my fav band until Opeth snitched the spot. I still absolutely adore the early albums, especially Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony, those three are very special to me. After those it slowly starts getting worse. I can kinda enjoy them up until Soundtrack to your Escape and even Come Clarity, but after that it's useless. Great video!

Not that songs I expected to see. But great reaction anyway. I hope you will make another one with In Flames

Some songs to feel really In Flames:
      December Flower
      The Jester Race
      Artifact of the Black Rain
      Zombie inc.
      Dial 595-ESCAPE
From 2000s era any song from Clayman album. You missed it sadly.
      Drenched in Fear
      March to the Shore
      Take this Life
10's period reasly sucks but some songs are not bad. Like Everything's gone.
And please check new song Meet Your Maker. Really nice comeback imo.

In flames is not even in sound and made many experiments with theirs sound but when you hear them, you know that is in flames. Deliver us and Attic is much better on this album.

No offense but I don't think the song choices are a good representation of the band pre-2000 (btw how do you make these song choices, just curious?). They pretty much carried the weight of the Gothenburg scene after At the Gates broke up and Dark Tranquillity were still experimenting, and to many fans their best stuff is their first four or five albums. Once the 2000s hit they said it was too hard to do layered harmonies live, and so the music became more straightforward (and suffered imo). I wouldn't say that they invented Screamo, but A LOT of bands ripped off the 2000s sound whom might fall into the Screamo catagory (whiney clean vocals, the higher pitch core screams, mid-paced 80's groove, and thrash riffs with melodic choruses). But I'm also sure a lot of people disagree with that assessment, and I'm sorry but that's what the old school fans felt like. Not trying to hate, but we'd been waiting 20 years for a "real" In Flames album (and we finally got it with the band The Halo Effect).

When it comes to melodeath there are TWO bands who are clear of the rest, Dark Tranquillity and Insomnium. IF early albums are great but the majority of their discography is mediocre to down right AWFUL. DT and Insomnium however have been very consistent and yet each album feels different from the previous.

    • @Horizzzz
      @Horizzzz ปีที่แล้ว +1

Those were way too consistent, i`d say )
With each record i get the feeling i`ve heard it before so it becomes boring as time goes on.
      But still great tho.. )

I love DT and Insomnium, but I would take prime In Flames and At the Gates over both of them any day.
