  • Taylor Muhl was born with different stomach colors and was told for years it was just a birthmark. After continual health issues, Taylor finally got answers; she had chimerism, which means she absorbed her twin in the womb and has two immune systems and two sets of DNA. In a Medical Mysteries and Miracles report, Taylor describes her journey on Megyn Kelly TODAY.

When Taylor said she used to have an obsession with twins as a child, I felt so close to her. My mother was supposed to have triplets, but after several complications during pregnancy on baby miscarried, one was stillborn and the third was me. I have had a literal obsession for as long as I remember with having a twin and honestly the worst part isn’t that I ended up losing both, but it’s this weird feeling of being incomplete that I get all the time.

Not only are you lucky but they live simultaneously through you. I can relate to how you’re feeling but I learned to accept that sometimes things happen for a reason but to never forget that we all have a purpose in this life. I hope one day you will find that and be at peace ♥

My twin died at 16 weeks and the doctor never realized it until I was delivered ahead of his deceased fetus. I always sense someone at my back and the feeling never goes away that I should have my brother here. Nobody in my family ever mentioned it to me until I miscarried twins of my own 14 years ago. I like to imagine that he needed them with him instead, and God blessed me with two singletons after that.

I almost fell out of my chair when I head this woman's story. I have a similar discoloration in the back of one leg, it's a straight line (one side dark, one light) that I thought was a birth mark, all my life I was plague by illness (sinus, respiratory, ect) , been in and out of the hospital, seen countless GP's and that feeling that I should have been a twin was always there. Twins run on my birth mother's side of the family. I haven't seen a doctor yet regarding this, I don't have health insurance. I go to a local health center for basic stuff like allergy meds, however these people are not educationally equip for something like this, so I'll have to wait until I have health insurance to get properly tested. In the interim I'm learning about DNA and cells and how to activate the body's healing system. There a few things I've done combines with visualization which actually worked. Basically I've been visualizing the immune system that's making me ill is no longer dominant and all those cells are shriving up and dying out. It seems to be working - the brain believes anything it's told.

Wow, it's been two years and no one has felt the need to say anything in response to your comments. I know what you mean but just to state the obvious, none of us are perfect. We all have issues though they may be minor or undetectable. Even if we are in the best of health, have all our fingers & toes, perfect is not the right word. First, because it would mean that those with obvious issues are somehow less than perfect, which they're not. Second, and along the same lines, for there to be perfection, there would have to be some standard that we'd all have to meet to qualify. For instance, what's the 'perfect' height, weight, facial feature, skin tone, hair color, eye color... Since there are so many variations & all are acceptable, even two tone skin on a torso... perfection cannot be a thing.

I heard of this ages ago but in those cases body parts were actually found embedded in the surviving twin. There are also Siamese or conjoined twins & there are the sisters who each had a head & other parts but basically shared one body. I don't doubt stuff happens but if her body attacks itself, I'm surprised she isn't more sick. Maybe everyone with autoimmune issues have a version of this.

Identical or fraternal? I’m willing to entertain the notion that there may be some type of special, as yet not fully understood bond between identical twins, with "fraternals" though, the relationship DNA-wise, is no closer than it would be had the twin been born years before or after the other. Of course fraternal twins grow up together and thus may develop a closer emotional bond than most siblings, but as to some mystical bond, _maaaybe_ just maybe, it might exist with an identical twin, with a fraternal twin though, no, the idea is nonsense.

But for future reference, you shouldn't go around stating that fraternal twins having a special or spiritual bond is "nonsense" because there are plenty of identical twins that hate and can't stand each other and plenty of fraternal twins that are deeply connected to each other.

I just learned about Chimera today. It blows my mind that a Mother actually absorbs the cells from her babies into her organs. I also read about this situation where a guy who suffered from serious drug addiction issues throughout his life, was left handed and right footed, he found out he had this condition, he apparently also suffered from autoimmune issues because his hair was falling out in patches. My kids are twins, it makes me wonder if they in the womb, could have absorbed some of each other’s cells? Maybe this can explain the closeness between twins in life. This really is absolutely fascinating. I’m so happy that this young lady was able to get to the answers and improve her health!

She denied each time. I found out in my 60's through DNA testing that in fact, he was not my biological dad! Another man was and it all makes sense now, including the medical mystery that I had been dealing with all my life. He carried the gene for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and I was just diagnosed by a geneticist! Bittersweet, but good to finally KNOW my instinct was correct!

Doesn’t seem like you need a DNA test to show that the baby was not the child’s mother

There was an episode of House M.D. about this very thing. When twins get too close, they can fuse together and even absorb one of them like her. Two sets of DNA, sometimes two sets of cells in the brain causing very life-like hallucinations.

Truly amazing story. She's deals with it incredibly and she's very beautiful. My question is, knowing how her immune system is sort of battling with itself, is her life expectancy affected by this at all?

I grew up an only child but I was a twin as well. My twin passed away in the early stages of pregnancy so we don’t know if it was a boy or girl. I wish my twin would have lived and been healthy that way we could have grown up together but I know one day I will see her or him again.

Fraternal twins have 2 different placentas, they cannot fuse after the placentas form because they don't touch. It has to happen before the placenta forms. Chimerism happens with identical twins as well, where they are both in the same placenta so it can happen later. I think she's the identical type because the left side of her stomach is identical except for the redness.

Interesting story. I suggest you use the term "abdomen" instead of "stomach" . The stomach is an organ in the abdomen which is used in digestion.

Venus isn't actually a chimera though.
They finally tested her and found out that she wasn't.
She's just a tortoiseshell that happens to be a split face (which is VERY common in tortoiseshell cats).

There is a photo of a cat being circulated on line, which is made up of patches + stripes of various distinct colors. The tagline is like "when you're the last cat made for the day and the factory has run out of matching parts."

My Grand mom gave birth to 3 sets of twins. 1 set lived but other 2 lost their sibling at birth. However my cousin who was born from my single aunt twin, had a physical due to pains in abdomin.
Doc. Discovered my cousin had a twin that was fused to her overy it had bone hair and size of a softball. ... odd stuff
